Following Up Kevin Forts, Breivik’s US Sympathizer

Starting a dialog
Terrorism • Views: 40,116

Kevin Forts isn’t a name that most people recognize, but he came to the forefront yesterday when Der Spiegel posted an interview with him on how and why he supports and sympathizes with Norwegian anti-Muslim mass murderer Anders Breivik.

Øyvind Strømmen brought this to our attention yesterday with his posting here.

Well, having done a little more digging, we learn a few more things about Forts, and he’s apparently received email back from Breivik.

Not content with admiring Breivik from Afar, Forts explained to VGTV why he wrote letters to the imprisoned Breivik:

I decided that I wanted to contact [Breivik’s] legal team to see if there was anything I could do, in the form of support. He said that all money would go to the victims’ funds. So I decided what I would want to do is try to help him ideologically by sending him letters, showing him support, that I believe that he is a nationalist and patriot, not the terrorist neo-Nazi that the media portrays him to be.

Forts has received at least one response from Breivik. HyperVocal quotes the letter from Breivik to Forts: “I have received letters from supporters in 20 countries, but you appear to be someone who can write well. Yes, I am absolutely interested in discussing ideological issues with you and am thinking about how we can work together.”

Forts’ support for Breivik appears to come from his shared belief that, as Truthdig puts it, “Muslims are invading Western nations with help from sympathetic multiculturalists and that they will impose Shariah law if given the chance.”

Germany’s Der Spiegel quotes psychological expert Terje Tørrissen, who has examined Breivik, as saying that the terrorist has received more than a hundred letters from supporters. They ‘use the same language, the same terminology as Breivik. And some say they have been inspired by him and will be more extreme.’

These admirers/fellow travelers could well be considered the Knights Templar that Breivik alludes to in his manifesto. It is truly worrisome that Breivik’s considered a hero to these extremists and that some are apparently considering actions even more extreme. As far as can be determined the two have not met.

Forts could well be on the same path, particularly considering that he’s already come on the police radar after being arrested for assault and battery in his home state of Massachusetts. The Telegram has more on Forts and that assault charge. He had been arrested in February after an alleged confrontation with his girlfriend on campus. The case is pending and Forts is out on $500 bail.

Forts currently attends Assumption College, and the college issued a statement about Breivik and Forts’ support:

Mr. Forts is a senior at Assumption College, the school confirmed this morning. He does not live on campus, the school said.

Late this morning, Assumption College issued a statement on Mr. Forts. It reads: “Kevin Forts has expressed his personal opinion on the Breivik case, and as a U.S. citizen, he is afforded that right. As a Catholic liberal arts institution dedicated to the moral, intellectual and spiritual integrity of the human person, Assumption College condemns the violence that occurred in Norway last July and does not support the opinions expressed by Mr. Forts. The College extends its sympathy to the victims of the violence and their families.”

Woah! If I were a student at Assumption College I'd be pretty nervous. Especially if I were, say, the student who's been walking around campus in a hoodie "for Trayvon Martin" (see the college's homepage).

And if I were an administrator there, I'd be consulting with my lawyers.

A),, you have no way of knowing that

I would assume the letters have an address attached to them. Maybe even names.

And I have a high opinion of Norway. They handled the terror attack very well considering circumstances.

I doubt someone can be deported for a letter writing (unless of course there were direct threats involved)

And again, I'd wager the great majority of those letters came from outside of the country (witness the person this thread is about)

Brevik murdered unarmed people, not soldiers. So assaulting a girlfriend is more in line, unfortunately, than out of it.

But Brevik is in prison now. I hope this guy is too cowardly to do anything for fear of that, because I doubt, if he thinks Brevik is great, that he would be constrained by ethics from doing it.

I agree, but that stated, a male assaulting a female in any way, shape or form shows cowardice (that is, if there wasn't also a pattern of assaulting others, regardless of gender/ age/ etc, a la Brevik)

I hope this guy is too cowardly to do anything for fear of that

I hope he's too cowardly to do anything regardless of the why

I think it's more disturbing that he (allegedly) assaulted someone he presumably loves. It was probably 'for her own good', just as Breivik's attack was for the good of Norway and Europe.

Romney’s Ohio Rebuttal: Blame Obama

Speaking at a shuttered National Gypsum plant in Lorain, Ohio, Thursday, Mitt Romney claimed that “had the president’s economic plans worked, [the factory] would be open right now.”

Never mind the fact that the plant actually closed in 2008, under President George W. Bush. Romney’s assertion, though, was an accurate summation of his own campaign narrative: No matter what happened before Jan. 20, 2009, the state of the economy is Obama’s fault.

Tea Party Congressman: Obama Will Commit Treason If Reelected

At a campaign fundraiser last week, Tea Party Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R-PA) warned attendees that President Obama would commit treason if reelected in November.

Fitzpatrick was listing the reasons why voters should not support the President, and for reason number three, he told the audience that President Obama would have no qualms auctioning off state secrets to foreign countries.

O.T. If you have not tried Hormel's new "Cook Off" series Roasted Tomato chilli do yourself a favor and try a can or two. At $2.59 a can at my local Publix it is fairly spendy, but definitely worth it in my opinion. I had a cookout last weekend on the back patio and everyone wanted to know my chilli recipe, I just set one of the empty cans on the table. (Which was of course followed by questions about what I added to it, to which my answer was "Nothing.")

(yeah I know, "But it is Hormel canned chilli!" Just try one can before you tell me how horrible it is, I had sixteen people here on saturday and not one complaint.)

That was the "test market" label they used on several new "Chilli Master" flavors of which roasted tomatoes was one. That is the label I first tried it under and found out how good it was. That Label is now seemingly discontinued, and so are the other two flavors that I previously saw sharing the chili master nomenclature.

The Roasted Tomato version however lives on relabeled as "Cook Off Series Roasted Tomato," apparently it was popular enough during the market trial to survive and reach actual production status.

Vermont says up yours to the conservative slime on the supreme court

In January 2010, the Supreme Court ruled in the case of Citizens United v. Federal Election Committee that it was unconstitutional to limit political campaign spending by corporations, thus helping to usher in the current era of the "super PAC." Today, Vermont's state legislature became the latest to call for an amendment to the Constitution that would overturn the controversial court ruling and declare that "money is not speech and corporations are not persons under the U.S. Constitution."

That is however not to say that he is unique in any way. One could say the same of the Taliban, or Al Qaeda, who he seems to emulate in just about every regard, even as he hates them.

It is disturbing to say the least and one can perhaps be forgiven for wanting to show him the error of his beliefs by instilling genuine fear in him, which the Norwegian legal system certainly doesn't.

On April 17, 2012, thousands from around the world will take part in the second annual Global Day of Action on Military Spending. With actions taking place in more than 35 countries, we will send a message to the 1% who profit off war and destruction, and the governments who do their bidding.

Global military spending reached over $1.6 trillion in 2010, and on April 17th, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute will release the data for 2011. Almost certainly, they’ll announce that military spending went up.

As the people of the world face existential crises from climate change, conflict and underdevelopment, the resources we need to solve humanity’s problems are being overwhelmingly devoted to death and destruction. In 2011 people spoke in one voice for a global priorities shift. This year, we’ll raise our voice even louder.

The Military Industrial Complex is actively lobbying against the the military budget cuts and pushing for War on Iran. The United States has spent 189 out of 235 years at war.

Creepy and sick. It's a pity the Secret Service didn't meet The Nuge with a straightjacket, because he needs mental health help, bad.

Either way, the Secret Service does not offer therapy. They're interested in only one thing.

If they were doing coke too, when the heads of state there had a murderous drug war to discuss, they were doing a huge disservice to humanity.

I haven't heard anything about that since that New Corp like story we heard that same day. Nada. Latest I heard was there were no drug involved as first reported. Which was just some dumb alleged "line of coke."

True that. The cartels have always been eager to supply law-enforcement personnel with drugs when possible. It gives them a means of control and blackmail over those they supply, and drug cartels thrive on gaining such power over law enforcement. Which is also why the Secret Service is landing on these guys with both feet.

I kinda wish that ex-lizard former secret service guy who was among the first to flounce/be banned was still around for some mocking or something.

Well, if he's not sick in the head then he does a very convincing imitation of an insane person.

Stupid ideas, poor impulse control, and ridiculous posturing do not a mental illness make.

He's got no signs of depression, anxiety, or any other affect issue. His ideations aren't sufficiently odd to classify as delusions, and he has sufficient mental capacity to interact and communicate his ideas to others, as well as defend them and/or retract them as social cues demand.

At best, he classes as something in the personality disorder...which means he's not certifiable. His bad behavior is not "crazy"--its bad behavior and lack of self control--akrasia. His shitty political concepts don't reach the level of clinical paranoia; they're just raving by an arrogant, bigoted man who's afraid.

BUT

All of his behavior is equally explainable by a massive ego and a sense of entitlement.

RED LANTERN BICYCLES in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, is a serious cycling shop: The air smells of chain grease; Sunlite tires, Planet Bike fenders and unbuilt Bianchis crowd the repair floor; and there is an antique penny-farthing in the window.

But other sights, sounds and smells dominate this Myrtle Avenue storefront: the single-estate Finca la Folie coffee beans roasting on site, writers pounding on their laptops and off-duty messengers tipping back bottles of beer, thanks to that rarest of bike-shop wall hangings: a State Liquor Authority license.

[...]

On that note, I'm headed home.

One Donor Ponied Up 35 Percent of Crossroads GPS's 2011 Haul

Talk about a mega-donor. Of the $28.4 million in donations banked in 2011 by Republican outside money group Crossroads GPS, a whopping $10 million of it came from just one donor. That's 35 percent. From one person, or one corporation.

Crossroads GPS, which does not disclose its donors, is the brainchild of GOP political mastermind Karl Rove. Founded in 2010, the group is technically a tax-exempt non-profit, known as a 501(c)(4), that can spend money on political advocacy so long as politicking isn't the majority of what it does. To comply with federal tax law, Crossroads must focus most of its work on issues, not candidates; otherwise, the group would have to file as a political action committee and reveal its funders.

So I just bought one of those pay-as-you-go cell phones so I can use it for selling stuff on Craigslist because I don't want any buyers to call my real number.

Got home, opened the package. I had a phone, a charger, a back cover for the phone, and instructions. The only thing missing? The battery for the phone. WTF. What is the point of selling a phone without a battery? Looks like I'll be heading back to the store in the morning to exchange this phone out.

I've had a virgin mobile phone for a few years, been happy with them so far.

I don't mind the idea of a pre-paid phone. I just need one that works. Heh.

This sucks. I needed to list things on Craigslist as quickly as possible so I can bring in some fast cash for bills. Now I have to go back to the store tomorrow when I really don't have the time. I've got class at 10am and I'm going to spend all afternoon tomorrow in the library doing research for my final project. I wanted to go to the library before class too, but that's fucked now that I have to backtrack to the store. Ugh.
