Romney Adviser Richard Grenell Deletes More Than 800 Tweets - Update: Wrote for Breitbart’s Big Journalism

Including sexist attacks on candidates’ wives
Politics • Views: 36,635

Richard Grenell, Mitt Romney’s new campaign spokesman, appears to have deleted more than 800 tweets he posted attacking women and the media.

On Friday afternoon, Grenell still featured a link to his personal site (http://www.richardgrenell.com) on his Twitter profile, which then showed that he had tweeted 7,577 times, according to a screenshot taken Friday by The Huffington Post. By Sunday morning, Grenell’s Twitter feed only listed 6,759 tweets and his personal site is no longer available. (Some examples of past writing have been archived on the Internet and can be found here.)

In the Twitter-fueled 2012 election, it’s not surprising that reporters quickly began digging through Grenell’s Twitter feed, even before he got a chance to scrub out a number of impolitic and sexist comments.

ThinkProgress noted Grenell’s tendency to make cutting remarks about the appearances of prominent women in media and politics, including his tweet advising MSNBC host Rachel Maddow “to take a breath and put on a necklace,” and another suggesting she resembled a Justin Bieber.

In another tweet, Grenell wrote that “Hillary is starting to look liek Madeline [sic] Albright.” He discussed First Lady Michelle Obama working out and “sweating on the East Room carpet.” He also asked whether Callista Gingrich’s “hair snaps on,” and on another occasion, commented how Gingrich’s third wife “stands there like she is wife #1.” Politico flagged more examples and noted Grenell’s “old pastime” of “ridiculing the Gingriches.”

When contacted about Romney’s hiring of Grenell and his removal of online writing, a campaign spokesperson referred The Huffington Post to a response Grenell gave to Politico. “My tweets were written to be tongue-in-cheek and humorous but I can now see how they can also be hurtful,” Grenell said. “I didn’t mean them that way and will remove them from twitter. I apologize for any hurt they caused.”

UPDATE at 4/22/12 11:12:26 am

Grenell has solid wingnut credentials, by the way; he’s even written articles for breitbart.com. Here’s a cache of his now-deleted website, showing a link to his Big Journalism articles: Journalists as Advocates - Richard Grenell. (h/t: Gus.)

And notice that the link is broken — as is every other link ever posted to Big Government, Big Journalism, or Big Peace before the mini-Breitbarts redesigned the site and completely trashed all existing links on the entire Internet.

Yeah, they were meant to be jokes. Mean, spiteful jokes. That was the point. They'd be funny to people who hate the people being ridiculed, otherwise they'd just be stupid.

Like telling Maddow to put on a necklace. All that is is "Ha hah, lesbian, looks like a man."

3 SanFranciscoZionist  Sun, Apr 22, 2012 10:49:38am

and on another occasion, commented how Gingrich’s third wife “stands there like she is wife #1.”

Ummm, this isn't hierarchical. Newt doesn't have a senior wife for her to show deference to, just two exes. Callista is not in Tai-Tai's spot. She is his wife. How should she stand to show that she's just his third wife, and not so important?

Somehow, out of all of these, that seems to me to show the deepest contempt for women. Bleah.

If he were only with Gingrich's campaign, I'd suggest that Rachel would be happy to accept one if he'd like to buy it from Tiffany's for her.

But her wife probably doesn't want Rachel taking jewelry from (really) strange men.

It's astounding. These people have honestly convinced themselves that they can say whatever hateful, hurtful, derogatory, offensive crap they want to then later claim it was "just a joke" and get away with it.

I just can't fathom the kind of mind who thinks this way.

How about someone responding: "Well you know, I'm not perfect. I make mistakes. Sometimes I tweet things without fully thinking them through or failing to realize how they might be viewed by others. I apologize for my carelessness and to anyone I offended."

Its almost more disturbing coming from a gay man, who surely has his share of negative stereotypical rhetoric directed at him.

You would think he would have a bit more empathy for women than the typical rwnj.

Rachel Maddow looks like a boy! She needs to sex it up with some jewelry...Oh that is so hilarious!!

Begin with: "I'm sorry your feelings are hurt" isn't an apology if that's all that's in the apology.

It means "I acknowledge you're mad at me, but I can't think of anything I did wrong."

It's okay if it's attached to "I'm sorry that I got drunk and made a pass at your sister. I'm sorry that I emptied our bank account to turn my Corolla into the Batmobile. I'm sorry that I ate your chocolate stash. I'm sorry that I unleashed a pair of rabid Tasmanian devils on your bunco party."

Grenell's humor is particularly mean in spirit, meant to ridicule and humiliate. It's sadistic. This tells me that he is an asshole and his scrubbing of tweets and so-called apology are disingenuous. No joke.

Sure! I don't have/use measurements, but no need to be exact.

Mix together:
Chopped, cooked chicken breast
Chopped celery
chopped green onions

In a bowl combine:
Mayonnaise (light or fat free can be used)
Chopped black olives
Chopped fresh cilantro
Hot sauce, like Tabasco or Louisiana Hot Sauce

Fold dressing into chicken mixture. (Do not try to short cut and just add everything into one big bowl - combine the mayo/olive mixture separately. It makes a BIG difference.)

Halve avocados. Either scoop out the avocado and stuff the skins with the chicken salad, placing avocado slices on top or leave the avocado in the skins and pile/cascade the chicken salad on and over.

This also makes an awesome wrap with lettuce, avocado, and chicken salad.

UPDATE 1-Egypt ends gas deal with Israel, stakeholder says

Egypt's energy companies have terminated a long-term deal to supply Israel with gas after the cross-border pipeline sustained months of sabotage since a revolt last year, a stakeholder in the deal said on Sunday.

Ampal-American Israel Corporation, a partner in the East Mediterreanean Gas Company (EMG), which operates the pipeline, said the Egyptian companies involved had notified EMG they were "terminating the gas and purchase agreement".

The company said in a statement that the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company had notified them of the decision, adding that "EMG considers the termination attempt unlawful and in bad faith, and consequently demanded its withdrawal".

I also note the "eavesdropping" claim on a "quiet Saturday night." He makes it sound as though the people at the other table were straining to hear by using the word "quiet" in that sentence when it was likely that the other people couldn't help but overhear a loud conversation. Somehow I don't think that people go out of their way to involve themselves in other's dinner conversation unless it was particularly egregious and intrusive on their own enjoyment of the evening.

A few more clues here: Egypt terminates gas flow to Israel, stakeholder says

Egypt on Sunday terminated a long-term gas deal with Israel, a stakeholder said, prompting Jerusalem to express its "deep concern" over what it described as a possible violation of the peace treaty between the two countries.
...
Ampal-American Israel Corporation – a partner in the East Mediterranean Gas Company (EMG), which operates the pipeline – said the Egyptian government had notified it that the deal would be discontinued.

Looks like the decision came from the government and could have implications on the peace treaty. Keep your fingers crossed.

Another confirmation: Ben-Eliezer: Egypt gas deal cancellation ominous

He claimed the Egyptian energy companies could not have terminated the deal without the government's backing. "The decision is political. A private company cannot terminate a deal between countries," he said. (Attila Somfalvi)

Hopefully this is a temporary suspension for security reasons of maybe a ploy to renegotiate the deal. If this is a move on the peace treaty it would be a very bad sign.

That is probably why it is going so slow. But that is the only option I have when it is raining. Either that or use some of my stash of Duracells. :)

That would require them to admit they made a mistake, and as fully paid up and thoroughly committed fanatics this is something they can never do. Error would require them to think and the reason they became fanatics is so that they would never have to think again.

They hate the responsibility of thought.

re: #48 Killgore Trout

New bad parents moved in across the street. 9 year old girls play dress up every afternoon and then get into the intersection with a referee's whistle and direct traffic. Watching 9 year olds directing traffic is admittedly pretty funny to watch but it's amazingly unsafe and obnoxiously loud.

I guess I don't understand that Grenell doesn't seem to understand that you can delete your tweets, but they remain in virtual world forevah.

Grenell is a classic misogynist, if you are a woman, you are only valuable based on your looks, not any well formed opinions you might have, or how many degrees or anything else really, just your looks. He has fully accepted the Limbaugh view of women. So he thinks it is funny to tweet his misogyny. He is a fool and so is Mitt Romney and this is just going to be another example of how Mitt just doesn't get women. And I think in the fall it will hurt him.

This guy must really hate himself though. He's a gay republican.
