Here We Go Again: Planned Parenthood Targeted for Wingnut Sting?

The religious right’s unceasing war on women’s rights

There’s been a string of suspicious incidents at Planned Parenthood clinics recently, and officials believe there’s another right wing “sting” video in the works.

According to Planned Parenthood spokesperson Chloe Cooney, clinics in at least 11 states have reported two dozen or more “hoax visits” over the past several weeks, in which a woman walks into a clinic, claims to be pregnant and asks a particular pattern of provocative questions about sex-selective abortions, such as how soon she can find out the gender of the fetus, by what means and whether she can schedule an abortion if she’s having a girl.

While patient privacy laws prohibit Planned Parenthood from offering specific details about the visits and where they occurred, Cooney told The Huffington Post that the incidents are so unusual and so similar to each other that they have raised concerns among the organization’s executives that the visits are being recorded as part of a concerted anti-Planned Parenthood campaign.

“For years opponents of reproductive health and Planned Parenthood have engaged in secret videotaping tactics with fictitious patient scenarios and selective editing in an attempt to promote misinformation about Planned Parenthood and our services,” Cooney said. “As with the prior instances, we anticipate that once again this group, likely in coordination with a broad range of anti-abortion leaders, will soon launch a propaganda campaign with the goal of discrediting Planned Parenthood, and, ultimately, restricting women’s health.”

The most likely group behind the campaign, Planned Parenthood suspects, is anti-abortion activist group Live Action, which has a history of paying actors to walk into Planned Parenthood clinics and act out various controversial scenarios in an attempt to catch the family planning provider’s staffers doing something illegal or immoral on tape. A recent operation involved actors posing as pimps and prostitutes engaged in human trafficking and seeking birth control, STD testing and other family planning services. HuffPost’s Ryan Grim reported in February 2011 that Live Action heavily edited the videos they gathered to alter the meaning of conversations and falsely imply that Planned Parenthood is complicit in sex trafficking, but conservative lawmakers and media outlets cited the group’s videos in numerous subsequent political attacks against the family planning provider.

An "editing trick" is an honest technique to cut out the boring stuff or otherwise make a piece of film look nicer. What they're doing is distorting the truth. In other words, a libelous attack.

If you want to claim these are somehow parallel -- please remind me when Live Action ever apologized for any misleading edits, or when anyone was ever fired for it, or when the people who used those tapes to support a policy agenda stopped using it as evidence. Perhaps these things all happened and it just slipped my mind.

I'm reading a biography of Julian the Apostate. He was a fascinating guy, but the author of the book has some really weird moments.

My favorite is the description of one of the many emperors of the day (in a book written in 2003) as 'a predatory homosexual'. I'm thinking 'If Magnentius had been an herbivorous homosexual, would that have improved things?'

Interestingly, the reaction was interesting. At first, everyone got paranoid, then relaxed when they learned it was an errant space rock.

Honestly, the meteor has me more worried than the initial paranoid thought of some of the people that nuts had done something.

Good morning Lizards.

Philly drying out from Sunday's heavy rain and the dizzling yesterday. Cold (40s), but no snow expected I think.

Equally dreary day here at work. Come in and it's 75% annoyance requests (password resets) and 25% (drop everything and do this now!) requests.

The former is mainly people ignoring procedures or simply being able to remember a password they set two weeks ago. The latter is the infamous "my crisis has become your crisis" stuff that is a leading cause of stress in IT professionals.

As a result I did kick an email out to the project manager asking for a message to be passed back down to the project team leads about this behavior.

They develop a custom report, get it moved from development to production, and tell the users to run it. The users cannot run it since there is no security to allow them to. So suddenly it's "WE NEED THIS RIGHT NOW!" tossed in my lap. For a process that would normally take at least 2-3 days going through the proper channels and procedures.

And, of course, my priority work on a hand-off that has to be coded and tested this week before a contractor rolls off the project gets side-lined as a result.

Planes have always fascinated me, When I was a kid I went to NYC to see the Intrepid, we went on the day it was closed :(

Get a trip in to the museum at Wright-Patterson then (Dayton, OH) if you can then. The Smithsonian is also a good place as well if you're on the East Coast. And, of course, there are small museums here and there or aircraft on display here and there at parks and "gate guards" at this or that AFB or NAS.

I wish that corp would just give me a computer allowance so I could buy my own laptop and then just tell everyone to get a gmail account and their own software. The problem is that the people who vote for the GOP don't actually care - they simply ignore anything that might discredit their voting choice in any way (open racism from right-wing journalists, massive logical inconsistencies in their economic platform etc.)

Password synch software is a tricky thing. Current employer has a system that is buggy, quite easy to screw up, not explained well to the users, and the Helpdesk method of handling it often makes it worse.

Previous employer used a slightly different system that actually worked fairly well. And since it only ran overnight it tended to not mess up as much.

Both systems do save me spending 50% of my time doing nothing but handling password and account locking issues. Which is the goal of synchronization software - save the user from having to remember myriads of different passwords. (An SAP IT person here might have accounts on 10+ SAP clients - which can possibly have different passwords.)

Downside of this is the same as any other single sign-on set up. It's a security risk since one password being compromised gives access to a lot of systems. Therefore the security auditors dislike these systems by default. (Though it partially prevents employees from have cards about with all their passwords written on them.)

And there are recommendations to, if possible and allowed by the loan agreement, to make extra payments against principle if you can afford to. The rough numbers on that were that if you managed the equivalent of an extra payment per year against principle on a 30-year loan you cut the loan duration to something like 18 years.

I pay about 5k (property taxes and PMI included, so 3700 or so is mortgage) a month, and I watch my principle come down just over 1,000 every month (I round up my payments so it's a nice even number). I went through the last year and noticed that every month, the amount going toward principle goes up by FOUR WHOLE CENTS! (that will increase too, but it was fun to see)

There was an article about Romney and his father in a recent New York Review of Books which basically made the case that Mitt has none of the moral center that his father had.

It wouldn't be very surprising if his total commitment to power and wealth as ends in themselves had left him without much emotional substance to fall back on.

Two points about that story, from the world of higher education:

1) They are not, strictly speaking, "eliminating computer science". As far as I can tell, what they have done is cut research funding and made computer science a strictly teaching operation. Not that this is a small change, but the point is that it will still be possible (again as far as I can tell) to take computer science courses as an undergraduate at UF. Moreover, there can be a certain amount of semantic nitpicking over computer science, as UF will retain the (much larger) computer engineering operation. Computer Science as a strictly-defined discipline is focused on the theoretical underpinnings of computers, and has traditionally had a smaller focus in the US than in Europe when it comes to setting educational priorities.

2) The athletic budget thing is a neat juxtaposition but a bit of a red herring itself, since the decision-making processes for the two budgets will be completely separate, and once again to the best of my knowledge UF has a separate athletic operation which might kick some of its surplus back to the university's general fund, but which generally operates as a standalone concern. Of course, the question of whether it's a good thing for our entertainment sport industry to have a weird symbiotic relationship with higher education remains open.

One final point about the University of Florida Computer Science thing. Good management of a state university system should maintain a healthy balance of competition (to prevent stagnation) with redundancy avoidance. I don't know how many Computer Science departments there are in Florida's state system, but I'm willing to bet this change has not reduced the number to zero.

Having said that, cuts in state education support suck. Although, and I say this as someone whose livelihood depends on the state higher education sector, I do think that limited state education funding is better invested in early childhood stuff. I think the research shows that's where you get the biggest bang for your buck.

Adhering to the Ryan Budget plan, which would cut discretionary spending in half. Since Romney has also promised to hold the line on defense spending, this would actually mean reducing the federal budget to just the military.

Privatizing social security and voucherizing medicare, both of which are immensely foolish on the face of them, and especially radical when combined with severe slashes to discretionary spending.

In fact, given Romney's adherence to Paul Ryan's budget plan, how could he possibly keep the promise on extended student loan rates?

You also have to explain why they have pictures of Muntz, and whether or not Barton killed Muntz's previous victims.

Romney has stated no amnesty, of any sort, is acceptable to him, and opposes the Dream act, which would provide a path to citizenship to people who came here illegally as children. He's stated that all illegal immigrants should have to leave the country and 'get in line' if they want to get citizenship or residence, and he has Kobach, one of the most radical and insane immigration whackos around, as his advisor.

Yet some people delude themselves into saying he's a moderate, because on a few issues he's not in the completely batshit insane territory the rest of the GOP is.

South Korea 'On Alert' for Possible North Attack

South Korea appears to be taking seriously the latest attack threat from North Korea.

Police say they have increased patrols around headquarters of nine conservative media outlets in Seoul after North Korea vowed to soon carry out a "special military action" on them by "unprecedented means and methods."

South Korea's government says it is concerned about Pyongyang's threat to reduce to ashes, in several minutes, the support base for the country's president, including several broadcasters and a leading daily newspaper, the Dong-a Ilbo.

Foreign ministry spokesman Cho Byung-je characterizes the latest threat from Pyongyang as “very dangerous and harsh.”

Cho says South Korea's government and military are strengthening their security postures and are on alert to prepare for any situation. He also warns that any military provocation by North Korea will be answered with a punishment by the South.

At the defense ministry, spokesman Kim Min-suk tells reporters he can say little about the possibility of fresh provocations by North Korea.

Kim says South Korean forces are monitoring the North's military but he cannot elaborate.

Now, that's how you make people feel welcome. Egads, I hated Bush I admit but I can't imagine him doing anything close to that.

I'm surprised at how relatively moderate, at least on some issues, G.W. looks in retrospect (certainly not on all issues, such as his "pre-emptive" invasion of Iraq).

Of course, if Romney's elected, it's somewhat unlikely he'll remain as extremist as his pre-election rhetoric suggests - but it would be interesting to go back and do a compare and contrast to Bush's pre-election rhetoric and to see if there's some sort of objective way to assess their respective levels of extremism.

I think all POTUS become more moderate once they are in the Oval Office. They have the meetings with the heads of Departments, Joint Chief and learn the realities of government --they learn they don't have the power they thought they were getting.

As Sergey has pointed out, the biggest problem is that Romney will be appointing judges, including, probably, Supreme Court justices. Right now, the court system is the only thing preventing things like the horrific anti-abortion laws, stupid anti-contraception laws, etc. from actually having effect. Romney has said he'd love to see Roe vs. Wade overturned, and 'states rights' increased markedly; there's no reason to believe he wouldn't appoint confederate judges of a similar mindset.

It's always hard to tell but I think these guys are pretty smart and mostly know what they're getting into long before they get to the White House. I have no idea. I haven't really thought about it or looked into it yet. I might not even bother since I really don't think he has much chance of winning and I seriously doubt I'd vote for him. For me the key issue is healthcare reform. I have doubts that he'd really scrap it but that's what he's campaigning on. It's a stupid position and pretty much guarantees that he's not getting my vote.

Sounds to me like somebody is trying to prove the talking point about the real war on women being waged through sex-selective abortions. You know, like the womb being the most dangerous place for African-Americans.

I think it will come down to where the economy and the unemployment numbers are close to the election. If they are getting better advantage Obama, if they remain bad or get worse Romney has a better chance.

I think Obama will certainly cover Israel's back in several ways. The question is whether or not there will be active military participation, i.e. joining in bombings. If not, wingnuts can play it as "abandoning Israel" etc., even if Israel would never ask for such participation.

I'm honestly not certain what would happen in that case. Part of it depends on the attack itself. Part of it depends on what Iran does immediately after.

Run an ugly. Say Israel includes a strike on the Physics sections of the Imam Hossein University and University of Tehran that (intentionally) kills a lot of people, both professors and students. Osirik "only" saw 11 deaths, ten of them soldiers. Killing a few hundred people would raise even more outrage, and might even draw a UN force into Israel.

I'm not sure Obama would move against that occupation.
