Shock: Newt Gingrich Bailing Out

Inevitable
Politics • Views: 25,192

The fact is, it’s always been Mitt Romney’s turn to win the GOP Presidential Sweepstakes, and Newt Gingrich is finally going to stop pretending he has a chance: Newt Gingrich to Suspend Campaign.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is expected to suspend his presidential campaign within the next week, according to two Republican operatives familiar with the decision.

Another Suspender?

They always do it that way. I think a large part of it is legal nonsense that gives them more options with money and stuff by not officially ending things. Something like that. I could look it up, but too lazy.

If this is the last we have to hear of the pompous prick, I'm glad. Newt always sucked.

5 lawhawk  Wed, Apr 25, 2012 10:05:03am

He's expected to make it official on May Day (how fitting, since he - and the GOP - are adrift and in need of rescue or shakabuku).

Nope. He'll have a FOX gig in no time. Though I'm sure all his "Romney is too liberal" statements will go down the memory hole quickly enough.

The question now is whether Santorum feels that his annointment as "next in line" requires him to endorse Romney as well or not.

With an entertaining distinction.

A Smart Politics review of Republican primary election data since 1972 finds that Mitt Romney's performances in Delaware and Pennsylvania mark the first time a GOP frontrunner has failed to reach the 60 percent mark in a contest conducted after his last major challenger dropped out of the race.

Without a careful recheck, it looks like RP is pulling twice as much as usual in the primaries. And that's good--he'll do more damage to the right sector.

Articles here and there today in PA about how the primary yesterday was the test rollout for the new Voter ID laws. But the turnout was so low that very few people got to experience. Thus a lot of concern about how a lot of people in November are not going to have the proper credentials and thus be denied their vote.

Southern Baptist Convention's Political Arm Pushes Opposition to the Violence Against Women Act

While the Southern Baptist Convention’s political arm, the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, is mired in scandal resulting from ERLC head Richard Land’s repeated plagiarism and inflammatory remarks on race, it has found time to criticize the Violence Against Women Act. Doug Carlson, manager for administration and policy communications for the ERLC, voiced the group’s opposition to the highly successful law because of new provisions that ensure that LGBT victims of domestic violence do not encounter discrimination while seeking help.

Carlson quoted a letter Richard Land signed along with Mathew Staver of Liberty Counsel, Jim Garlow of Renewing American Leadership Action, Tom McClusky of Family Research Council Action, C. Preston Noell of Tradition, Family, Property Inc., Phyllis Schlafly of Eagle Forum and Penny Nance and Janice Shaw Crouse of Concerned Women for America.

Notably, the letter was also signed by conservative activist Timothy Johnson, who was convicted of a felony domestic violence charge and was arrested a second time for putting his wife in a wrist lock and choking his son, as reported by Sarah Posner.

Robertson: Scientists 'Can't Speculate about the Origins of Life'

Pat Robertson has long had a tense relationship with the scientific community, even going so far as to tell residents of a Pennsylvania town that in a school board election voted against supporters of teaching Intelligent Design that “if there is a disaster in your area don’t turn to God, you just rejected him from your city…I recommend they call on Charles Darwin, maybe he can help them.” Today on the 700 Club, the televangelist offered a confusing response to a question about the compatibility of science and religion, saying that the “trouble is where scientists speculate about theology and they don’t know what they’re talking about because they weren’t there.” Robertson maintained that scientists “can’t speculate about the origins of life because they weren’t there” but then claimed it is appropriate to believe a “geologist who tells you something existed 300 million years ago.”

Based on that logic, Evangelicals are no longer allowed to say what Jesus meant because they weren't there.

Southern Baptist Convention's Political Arm Pushes Opposition to the Violence Against Women Act

OTOH, organized opposition to it gives Joe Biden something to talk about on the campaign trail, since he worked to draft it and get it passed in the first place.

Nope. He'll have a FOX gig in no time. Though I'm sure all his "Romney is too liberal" statements will go down the memory hole quickly enough.

Only until Mittens get's curb stomped (which the VP process is making look all the more likely) then it'll all be there to help with the "we only lost because he wasn't conservative enough" narrative. That's the main reason he'll get the Fox gig; they'll only really want him to help further poison the well after Obama's re-election.

California Advances Bills To Expand Access To Abortions

While states across the nation are imposing new restrictions on abortion procedures, California advanced legislation yesterday to expand access to a first-trimester abortions. Under a senate measure, “nurse practitioners, nurse midwives and physician assistants would be able to perform what is known as an ‘aspiration’ abortion, which is the most common abortion procedure and takes place in the first trimester of a pregnancy.” A separate bill advanced in an Assembly Committee “passed a separate bill that would expand access to birth control by allowing registered nurses to dispense the medication.”

Tennessee Lawmaker Attributes Teen Suicides To Bad Parenting

A state representative from Tennessee attributed the recent wave of teen suicides to poor parenting during a speech in the Tennessee House last night, as he made his case against a cyber bullying bill.

“We’ve had some horrible things happen in America and in our state, and there’s children that have actually committed suicide, but I will submit to you today that they did not commit suicide because of somebody bullying them, ” State Rep. Jeremy Faison (R) said. “They committed suicide because they were not instilled the proper principles of where their self-esteem came from at home.”

Suicide, teen or not, is the result of a great many complex issues. Assigning any given suicide to any one cause without actually carefully investigating is stupid, generalizing as done here goes beyond stupidity into irresponsible ignorance.

All statistics about suicide can do is give us a starting point for preventative action, it should not be used to incorrectly assign blame.

Egypt should overturn 'insulting Islam' prison sentence for actor Adel Imam

A ruling against leading Egyptian actor Adel Imam, who was sentenced yesterday to three months in prison for “insulting Islam” in his films, sends out the message that Egypt has not moved on from its Mubarak-era heritage of suppressing free speech, Amnesty International said today.

The actor, who was also fined (around £100), was first found guilty in absentia in February for his film roles in a case originally brought last year by a lawyer. In filing his complaint of contempt of religion, the lawyer used Article 98(f) of the Penal Code, which punishes “whoever exploits religion in words or writing or any other methods to promote extremist ideologies, with a view of stirring up sedition, disparaging or contempt of any divine religion or its adherents, or prejudicing national unity and social peace.”

The common language and fact that there wouldn't be much need for localization for products is what makes the UK attractive. The unspoken and horrible truth about bullying isn't that bullies do what they do hidden from authorities. It's that the authorities quite often know about it and don't do anything either because the bully has important parents, or because they feel that the bullied child deserves it in some way.
