Pat Robertson, Science Guy

Not a flat-earther

Pat Robertson has been saying some surprising things; recently he came out in favor of legalizing marijuana, and today Right Wing Watch notes this section of his TV show 700 Club in which we learn, to our astonishment, that although he believes scientists should not “speculate about the origins of life,” Robertson is not a young earth creationist. Or a flat-earther.

Robertson: God created the world; the laws of nature were created by God. True science tries to find out what God put in the world. The trouble is where scientists speculate about theology and they don’t know what they’re talking about because they weren’t there. They can’t speculate about the origins of life because they weren’t there. If they tell you observable phenomenon then we ought to believe them, and I tell you if you find a geologist who tells you something existed 300 million years ago then you better believe them because he knows what he’s talking about. We don’t want our religious theory go with flat earth.

On the other hand, Pat isn’t exactly a big fan of Charles Darwin or the theory of evolution either: Robertson claimed “evolutionists worship atheism,” evolutionary theory a “cultish religion”.

Apparently, Pat likes to spark one up before he goes on camera. It’s the only explanation for him promoting TEH EBIL SIGH-UNCE!!!!

See Pat is getting old and knows that he’s going to die soon so he is getting right with the non-existant divinity.

Be typically contrarian if he became more sane as he gets older.

“Maybe we need a very small nuke thrown off on Foggy Bottom to shake things up like Newt Gingrich wants to do.”

Another Robertson gem.

Well, shoot me out of a cannon…

“It may be a blessing in disguise. … Something happened a long time ago in Haiti, and people might not want to talk about it. Haitians were originally under the heel of the French. You know, Napoleon the third, or whatever. And they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, we will serve you if you will get us free from the French. True story. And so, the devil said, okay it’s a deal. Ever since they have been cursed by one thing after the other.”

Obviously Pat must have been there. How would he know, otherwise?

Last month, Steven Colbert observed that Robertson is suffering from age-related “mentia”:

I’m surprised he’s not a young earther. He has as of late been coming across less insane than say Bryan Fischer.

Tide goes in, tide goes out. You can, apparently, explain that.

“Scientists shouldn’t speculate about the origin of life, ‘cause I said so.”

Evangelicals should no longer speculate on the teachings of Jesus since they weren’t there.

Another Robertson gem.

“The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians.” –Pat Robertson

Well, they believe they have stuff written by people who were there. Even though text criticism demonstrates that the Gospels are not eyewitness accounts from four different evangelists, but that three of the Gospel writers largely copied from the earliest Gospel, Mark, which was itself a great example of Jewish midrash writing (reinterpreting the Jewish scriptures in creative ways for the current generation).

Thats science!

Pat’s become even more unpredictable in old age. I guess that happens.

Maybe…he’s old enough to have been there at the Haitian Revolution.

Well, for Richard Dawkins he’s got an argument. Dawkins wouldn’t disagree that strongly, except for the worship and religion things.

23 SidewaysQuark  Wed, Apr 25, 2012 5:05:19pm

Sorry Pat, I’ll speculate about whatever I damn well please.

24 funky chicken  Wed, Apr 25, 2012 5:08:10pm

And Robertson is old enough to have been forced to learn all that hard stuff like science and math. He’s also apparently smart enough to not want to be included in with the young earth creationist anti-intellectual boobs. Hopefully some of his audience will feel the same.

Or his audience is already mostly old folks who agree with him already.

It’s a trap!!

26 JEA62  Wed, Apr 25, 2012 6:40:29pm

I honestly think Robertson suffers from some kind of psychological condition like schizophrenia or multiple-personality disorder. It’s the only explanation I see for his back and forth positions.

A better explanation, IMO is that he’s a pro at grifting his audience for a living, but not being a complete Kirk Cameron-level idiot, he accidentally lets the truth slip out now and again.

When he first talked about Terri Schiavo, for example (I swear) I heard him say it was “sometimes best to let nature run its course” - until she became the cause de celebre for the Religious Right, and his position mysteriously changed.

Well Pat you should read “Origin of Species” and then perhaps with a little more effort “The Selfish Gene”.
If you still cast aside common sense science in favour of your silly sky daddy
then you need some further mental counselling.
