What republican war on women?

Why do you need to see only the negative? I see that several Republicans did vote for it, allowing it to pass. The GOP's return to sanity is around the corner!

Unanimous nay votes came from Alabama, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Utah, and Wyoming. Kentucky being Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell. Also voting no was Romney VP favorite, Marco Rubio.

You forgot Georgia for the unanimous nay votes.

The bill to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act of 1994 has passed the Senate, and every single Senator who voted against it was a Republican.

One bright spot, for us Tennesseans, at least: our two GOP senators (Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker), along with Vitter from LA, were the only GOP senators from the Southeast to vote for reauthorization of this bill.

Politics in TN is all sorts of fucked up right now, but at least Alexander and Corker got it right this time.

You know what's the difference between what some of those leading the tactical assault against women have been/are saying, and between what radical imams in the Middle East have been/are saying?

Answer: Google Translate...

17 Lord Baron Viscount Duke Earl Count Planckton  Thu, Apr 26, 2012 3:38:02pm

See, several Republicans crossed the party line, while Democrats voted strictly according to the party line. Shows that Democrats don't value bipartisanship, while the GOP is a party of mavericks.

2/3rds. So it barely made it past a veto proof vote. That would require both the Senate and the House. Thinking in terms of a vote like this getting passed but being vetoed by a wingnut president.

Grassley whined:

“All these things add up to things that are keeping a bill that could pass on a voice vote from being passed,” Grassley said. “Violence against women except for these additions is noncontroversial. I’m afraid what they’re doing here is they want a political issue — you know, ‘war on women’ — and they are going to end up with another one-year extension.”

I wonder if any of these Republicans have themselves committed domestic violence - like, say, this GOP activist:

While the Southern Baptist Convention’s political arm, the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, is mired in scandal resulting from ERLC head Richard Land’s repeated plagiarism and inflammatory remarks on race, it has found time to criticize the Violence Against Women Act. Doug Carlson, manager for administration and policy communications for the ERLC, voiced the group’s opposition to the highly successful law because of new provisions that ensure that LGBT victims of domestic violence do not encounter discrimination while seeking help.

Carlson quoted a letter Richard Land signed along with Mathew Staver of Liberty Counsel, Jim Garlow of Renewing American Leadership Action, Tom McClusky of Family Research Council Action, C. Preston Noell of Tradition, Family, Property Inc., Phyllis Schlafly of Eagle Forum and Penny Nance and Janice Shaw Crouse of Concerned Women for America.

Notably, the letter was also signed by conservative activist Timothy Johnson, who was convicted of a felony domestic violence charge and was arrested a second time for putting his wife in a wrist lock and choking his son, as reported by Sarah Posner.

Letter: Have the courage to challenge evolution

Kathryn Hendrix, Knoxville

It is paradoxical that when it comes to the theory of evolution, some supporters seem actually to be afraid of scientific inquiry. In response to those who raise serious questions about aspects of the theory, they try to make the questioners look stupid. Yet, if one asks for evidence of the theory of evolution in the development of life, examples only of variation within species are given. Although evolutionists talk about the growing number of fossils, they have yet to find fossil evidence of organisms evolving from one species to another.

We are learning that DNA holds a wealth of information from which natural selection adapts an organism to environmental needs. How did all this information get into the DNA? But that question implies intelligence in design, which proponents of evolution cannot allow. Scientific and educational organizations should be the first to study the data and theories that challenge the prevailing evolutionary explanations. The search for truth must take precedence over the defense of a cherished theory. Scientists should be free to explore and to discover where the evidence leads without fear of being denied positions in higher education and research. We need teachers who do not expect students to swallow unexamined a theory that has been force-fed as an exclusive diet, teachers who encourage students to ask questions. We need students who will demand evidence to support what they are being taught.

We all need to have the courage to challenge a popularly accepted theory where it is not supported by the evidence, and the freedom to learn about data that runs counter to that theory.

Courage... that's what we need, courage.

Letter: Have the courage to challenge evolution

Courage... that's what we need, courage.

From 2011:

Evolution lacking tested evidence

Science instruction should be based on science. Yes. And science should be based on evidence, observation, carefully controlled, documented, peer-reviewed experiments. Theories such as evolution should be presented as such. Believing that human beings evolved from simpler life forms is a matter of faith. There is no fossil evidence to support this belief and no one has conducted an experiment in which evolution from a simpler to a more complex life form has been observed.

Science students do need to be taught to think critically and to examine the basis for theories. Our scientific inquiry is being stymied by the insistence that the theory of evolution be accepted as fact even though it is lacking evidence which can be observed and tested.

Letter: Cartoon on evolution misses fact

The cartoon on the April 19 Opinion page featuring a science teacher contrasting evolution and creationism merits comment. The implied message is that those who believe we are the result of a long series of random unsupervised events are intelligent thinking people, while those who believe we are here through the deliberate act of a being outside of space and time are naive primitive thinkers.

However, this message misses the fact that the more we study the universe, the more evidence we find for a creator. One of the more stunning discoveries was announced 20 years ago this month — that measurements from the cosmic background explorer (COBE) confirmed the Big Bang creation event, the beginning of the universe indicated by Albert Einstein’s equations of general relativity. The COBE project leader declared, “It’s like looking at God.” [sigh...]

Turning our focus from the cosmos to the cell, the more we discover about the incredible code of life programmed into our DNA, the more difficult it is to explain how simple molecules could have arranged themselves into the proteins which build our cells or into the DNA molecules which contain the detailed code to assemble proteins.

Evolutionary biologist Francisco Ayala estimated the probability of intelligent species arising from single-celled organisms at -10^1 million (or 999,999 zeros between the decimal point and the “1”). Calculations by others yield even smaller probabilities. The more we learn about the details of life, the closer these probabilities come to zero. This should give us all plenty of food for thought.

The House and Senate sessions in Concord today were extraordinary. The Senate picked up where it left off swatting away the frivolous, the extreme and the downright wacky legislation sent its way by the House.

The House retaliated by attaching the language from the defeated bills as non-germane amendments to Senate bills on which they were already voting and tabling six noncontroversial Senate bills as hostages. Wow.

Those are both GOP-controlled. It's kind of the wingnuts vs. the appalled establishment.

After thinking about this for a few...this is some calculated move by the GOP. For some reason they think voting against women as a whole, while slicing their objections into LGBT or illegal immigrant BS (oh but Native Americans? That's insane) Is a workable route to take. They can still get votes. This is somehow still good for them. THAT is the frightening part.

"If Paul Ryan Knew What Poverty Was, He Wouldn't Be Giving This Speech"

...During the Q&A session that followed, where Ryan fielded questions submitted by students, he insisted that welfare reform had brought down child poverty rates. The claim is false, especially in Ryan's home state. According to the most recent data, the child poverty rate in Wisconsin jumped 42 percent between 2000 and 2010. The suffering would have been more significant but for the large increases in federal food assistance that Ryan wants to scale back.

They choose their battles carefully. That they've chosen this one should be an enormous flag to the rest of the GOP. It probably won't. Certainly fine by me when the wave of women voters gives them a big FU in November.

Days before 58 percent of Mississippi voters rejected the measure, Bryant said at a pro-personhood rally in Tupelo that if voters were to reject the amendment, "Satan wins." He called the campaign "a battle of good and evil of biblical proportion."

For tight space it is probably good for herbs, and the like. Small plants. However tomatoes and cucumbers need tons of water and more, and they grow big. Chances are you would miss one watering day and lose the lot.

There are upside down tomato grow pots, like a 5 gallon bucket with a small hole in the bottom, but even these lose water through the hole and won't give you a good crop.

A tip. Put some holes up the sides of the bucket a few inches, with a PVC pipe down the inside, then water into the pipe until it comes out the holes. Also, cover the top of the bucket with PVC and a hole for the plant to reduce evaporation. You will be surprised how much water you need to add every day once it gets going, and fertilize the hell out of it.
