re: #26 I'm a Mavrik!
I've been reading the second response by Carrier and am convinced that Ehrman has not been playing with a full deck in his book and the responses.
IMO Ehrman has fallen into a trap, of trying to be a popular writer covering what is essentially a subject with so many technical issues that without a background in the subject a reader couldn't understand a real discussion of the issue.
This happens in all sorts of fields - it's the most common problem in describing climate change to the masses; same with other contentious technical issues.
Ehrman relies so much on arguments from authority that the book as little meat. Only Hoffman, who has taken Ehrman's side in this, is coming off as more... uppity, if I may use that term.
I don't have anything really to offer - certainly in Ehrman's and Hoffman's eyes I'm not qualified to comment on the subject. Yet I can discern logically poor arguments rather directly (as anyone could if they simply look at what is on offer rather than wanting to see something else.)
Ultimately this field suffers from a lack of new empirical data.
There just hasn't been enough 1st century discoveries to help settle some matters. The DSS help set the stage for some of Judea in the period, but that is understandably only a slice of the society at that time, one that no doubt fits into the picture but can also skew our results.
What is needed is discovery of Roman records from Palestine from the first century, to get a better understanding of the population's beliefs.
The destruction of 68 to 73AD reset that society, and frankly reset ours too. My contention is that we would not "Christianity" as we know it without the Romans destroying the Jewish society at that time.
Unfortunately part of the destruction appears to have erased many records.
And, given that Palestine was a bit of the boondocks as far as the Roman empire was concerned not too many Roman writers were really concerned with it.
And, given how little non-religious writing appears to have been done by the Jews of that period, I suspect the likelihood of us discovering something new from the Jewish perspective of that era is very low.
Remaining archeology to be done is in Syria and Lebanon, where Christianity took root after the fall of Jerusalem. Unfortunately those two countries have in these days been not open to the extensive archeological research that is needed, for obvious political records.
Egyptian sands alway seem to spill forth some old papyri now and then, but I suspect that a great deal gets destroyed or end up in private hands who simply don't want to share to the public. An amazing amount of antiquities lie behind lock doors.
So Ehrman can keep writing his popular fluff, and his publisher will make sure it gets enough airing to sells enough books.

WHY are political and religious figures who campaign against gay rights so often implicated in sexual encounters with same-sex partners?
Enlarge This Image
In recent years, Ted Haggard, an evangelical leader who preached that homosexuality was a sin, resigned after a scandal involving a former male prostitute; Larry Craig, a United States senator who opposed including sexual orientation in hate-crime legislation, was arrested on suspicion of lewd conduct in a men’s bathroom; and Glenn Murphy Jr., a leader of the Young Republican National Convention and an opponent of same-sex marriage, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge after being accused of sexually assaulting another man.One theory is that homosexual urges, when repressed out of shame or fear, can be expressed as homophobia. Freud famously called this process a “reaction formation” — the angry battle against the outward symbol of feelings that are inwardly being stifled. Even Mr. Haggard seemed to endorse this idea when, apologizing after his scandal for his anti-gay rhetoric, he said, “I think I was partially so vehement because of my own war.”
It’s a compelling theory — and now there is scientific reason to believe it.

And I have to agree with her. I had no idea that Republicans didn't believe that women made less than men for each dollar earned. Some May Day protesters have already started vandalizing SF.
Vandalizing protesters go on rampage in SF's Mission District
SAN FRANCISCO — Police in riot gear were on alert outside the Mission District station Monday night after a rowdy group of protesters splattered the station entrance with paint and smashed windows with crowbars.
A group of approximately 50 protesters, many of them dressed in black, targeted the station with the attack at around 9:15 p.m., Sgt. Daryl Fong said. Vandals wielding crowbars smashed windows and threw paint at the station, located in the 600 block of Valencia Street, according to police.
After initially focusing on the station, the group moved down Valencia Street smashing car windshields and windows to nearby businesses. A BMW SUV was reportedly be lit on fire with a flare, causing extensive damage to the vehicle.
No information regarding possible detentions or arrests was immediately available.

Looks like the Philadelphia thing today is a rally in West Philly, not Center City for noon today. And that doesn't look like OWS, but more likely an umbrella of protests collecting in a single spot. Worker and social justice oriented with all the "power to the people" trappings from the one web-site I saw.
I might saunter past City Hall at lunch in any case to see if there is anything going on though.

Four of the mailed envelopes contained an identical note, which included the language "Happy May Day," the spokesman said.
The incident comes on the eve of a planned day of protests organized by the Occupy Wall Street movement and labor groups across the country. According to a website called maydaynyc.org, demonstrations are planned in New York City against "the corporations who rule our city."
Ed Needham, a member of Occupy Wall Street's New York media team, said he had found no connection between the incident and his movement. "It doesn't sound like something that we would do," he said.

Austin doesn't look like it's going to have anything close to the massive stuff going on in CA. The only explicit Occupy-endorsed anything is a rally against foreclosures this morning. The rest seems to be tied up in International Worker's Day itself, since there's some sort of picnic this afternoon, then a march from the UT campus to the state capitol, then some events downtown.
If their FB events pages are anything to go by, turnout won't be anything huge. There will be some folks there, of course, but my guess is that most people will be focused on work and/or school instead.

Students to Leave Class to Conduct Occupy-Style Event
Students from Sequoia High School and Woodside High School are planning to leave school during their lunch hour today for a student strike against the 1 percent.
They will convene at Red Morton Park for a picnic and afternoon of speaking out, information sharing and free education. Occupy Redwood City will be on hand to assist them with literature and statistics.
“It’s really important that they start being politically active,” said James Lee of Occupy Redwood City. “[These students] are 18 or going to be 18, so they’re the next generation of voters.”
For extra credit they will be taught how to bust up windows and shit in bank hallways.

Five 'anarchists' arrested for attempting to blow up Ohio bridge
CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Five individuals described by authorities as anarchists were arrested Monday for allegedly attempting to blow up a bridge in the Cleveland area, FOX News Channel reported.
According to sources, the FBI and the federal Joint Terrorism Task Force are involved in the investigation.
It is unknown if the bridge incident was connected to Occupy Wall Street's plans for nationwide protests Tuesday.
A press conference is scheduled at 10:00am.

More info:
(CBS News) Five "self-proclaimed anarchists" have been arrested after a months-long sting operation, charged with plotting to blow up a bridge in the Cleveland area, the FBI announced today.
CBS News senior correspondent John Miller reports the group had been involved in a series of escalating plots that ended with their arrest last night by FBI agents.
The sting operation supplied the anarchists with what they thought were "explosives" and bomb-making materials.
At no time during the case was the public in danger, the FBI said.
According to law enforcement sources, the five were not connected to international terrorism.
"The initial plot involved the use of smoke grenades to distract law enforcement in order for the co-conspirators to topple financial institution signs atop high rise buildings in downtown Cleveland," according to the complaint.
The FBI says the accused over the course of several months discussed various targets in and around the Cleveland, Ohio metropolitan area over the course of several months, with the Route 82 Brecksville-Northfield High Level Bridge being selected as the target. The bridge crosses over Cuyahoga Valley National Park from Brecksville to Sagamore Hills.
The defendants then conspired to obtain C-4 explosives, contained in two improvised explosive devices (IEDs), to be remotely detonated.
"The individuals charged in this plot were intent on using violence to express their ideological views," said FBI Special Agent Stephen D. Anthony.

Interesting. Whereas we will have a beer or a cocktail in front of our son. A glass of wine with dinner and perhaps a sherry after. But getting plastered is looked down on. There have been some people in our families that have had trouble but I don't see going neo-prohibitionist as the way to prevent that from happening again. Anarchists charged in a terror plot. In Cleveland.
They first thought about knocking down bank signs, but then started looking into more extreme acts - blowing up a bridge and proceeded to the point of obtaining what they thought were explosives.
The more I see about the anarchists and terror plots, the more I think we're seeing a repeat of events from the turn of the century. The 19th into the 20th century that is. It's the same themes at work, and the usual suspects as well.

Joe Hill, born Joel Emmanuel Hägglund in Gävle, Sweden, and also known as Joseph Hillström (October 7, 1879 – November 19, 1915) was a Swedish-American labor activist, songwriter, and member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW, also known as the "Wobblies"). A native Swedish speaker, he learned English during the early 1900s, while working various jobs from New York to San Francisco. Hill, as an immigrant worker frequently facing unemployment and underemployment, became a popular song writer and cartoonist for the radical union. His most famous songs include "The Preacher and the Slave", "The Tramp", "There is Power in a Union", "The Rebel Girl", and "Casey Jones—the Union Scab", which generally express the harsh but combative life of itinerant workers, and the perceived necessity of organizing to improve conditions for working people...

It amuses me that people flip their shit over "greedy union workers" but are conspicuously quiet on corporate greed and policies that coddle the very wealthy. From the Occupy LA site. An interesting approach. Hint to myself-Stay the hell away from the red zone. Unless I can get up for a view and use my long lens anyway.
Central Hub March Tactical Parameters
Submitted by Lyssa Strata on Sun, 04/29/2012 - 1:19pm
Red:
This attracts anti-capitalists, anti-fascists and other more militant comrades of a revolutionary bent. We encourage affinity groups to work together in a show of disciplined and organized resistance. This is the zone that is predisposed to standing their ground against the police.
Yellow:
This zone typically caters to people who are in between red and green, who are conscience of police repression and direct or mass actions but recognize some element of risk and would like to be cautious of escalation.
Green:
This attracts individuals who prefer a quieter, safer environment. Some of these groups may include the undocumented, differently-abled, children, families or anyone not wanting to come into direct confrontation with the police.
These zones do not serve to limit any individual’s actions but exist to facilitate a positive experience. In case the march is escalated by police repression, Pershing Square is considered a green zone for those who may feel uncomfortable.
IN CASE OF POLICE INTERACTION:
Do not panic.
Do not talk to the police.
Do not intervene in the actions of others.
If you feel unsafe, move away.
Provocateurs and Police Agents will spread false information and attempt to escalate the situation. Remain calm, do not panic. Do not spread information that has not been verified.
Remember, in the face of the adversary, WE SHOW FULL SOLIDARITY.

Quite fairly, in my book.
You fail, you can get criticized.
You succeed, you can get praised.
Why is there a problem with that?
