Romney Foreign Policy Adviser Richard Grenell Hounded Out by Anti-Gay Conservatives

No room for gay Republicans
Politics • Views: 32,017

Washington Post blogger Jennifer Rubin, who recently noticed that the conservative movement is virulently anti-gay, has a headline on her latest post that says it all: EXCLUSIVE: Richard Grenell Hounded From Romney Campaign by Anti-Gay Conservatives.

When I learned that Grenell was gay, I knew it was just a matter of time until he was forced out. Mitt Romney may have intended the choice of Grenell as a statement that he was Etch-a-Sketching away from the far right, but this resignation makes a much clearer and more honest statement: that the Republican Party is the party of reactionary anti-gay bigotry.

If Romney honestly did intend to pull away from the far right, he found out today that he’s made a deal with the devil.

UPDATE at 5/1/12 1:57:16 pm

American Family Association bigot Bryan Fischer is ecstatic over the resignation; he says the religious right has forced Mitt Romney to back down, and taught him not to do anything like this again.

Let's not fool ourselves, any "moderates" still in the party at this point will work their little hands off waving the pom-pons for Mittens, all the way to the polls. The rest of us see the man not only for the joke that he is, but as a thin veneer over the lunacy of the party itself.

“I look at these people and can't quite believe that they exist. Are they professional actors? I wonder. Or are they simply laymen who want a lot of attention? To put them in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. "Can I interest you in the chicken?" she asks. "Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it? To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.”

True, but he's a gay man that was working for a Mormon candidate for President, and that's just a bridge too far.

It's bad enough that these RWNJs have to "endure" a candidate for President that they believe is a cultist that's barely a half-step above Satanist, but to have an openly gay spokesman? That's not allowed.

Video: Amendment 1 pastor gives parents 'special dispensation' to use violence against LGBT kids!!!

TRANSCRIPT: "So your little son starts to act a little girlish when he is four years old and instead of squashing that like a cockroach and saying, “Man up, son, get that dress off you and get outside and dig a ditch, because that is what boys do,” you get out the camera and you start taking pictures of Johnny acting like a female and then you upload it to YouTube and everybody laughs about it and the next thing you know, this dude, this kid is acting out childhood fantasies that should have been squashed. Can I make it any clearer? Dads, the second you see your son dropping the limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist. Man up. Give him a good punch. Ok? You are not going to act like that. You were made by God to be a male and you are going to be a male. And when your daughter starts acting to Butch you reign her in. And you say, “Oh, no, sweetheart. You can play sports. Play them to the glory of God. But sometimes you are going to act like a girl and walk like a girl and talk like a girl and smell like a girl and that means you are going to be beautiful. You are going to be attractive. You are going to dress yourself up.”
You say, “Can I take charge like that as a parent?”
Yeah, you can. You are authorized. I just gave you a special dispensation this morning to do that."

I guess the lesson here for the Romney campaign is that there are limits to how far you can take being on both sides of an issue. They gave 10-grand to the virulently anti-gay NOM to in signal one direction in 2008, then hired Grenell, seeding the story to the media, partially to signal the opposite recently. Then after getting all the paleocon blow-back, they didn't actually use him publicly, in the capacity he was hired for, perhaps waiting for it to all blow over. Grenell got the message and stepped down.

96 moderatelyradicalliberal  Tue, May 1, 2012 4:20:55pm

re: #88 Sonic the Hedgehog

This is so infuriating.
...I need a break before I compromise my account, this just broke me.

Yeah...I am trying real hard not to write something that will get me banned at this point. This sonavabitch is is advocating violence against children.

I don't know, guys. Seems believable to me that Grenell's extraordinarily d!ckish tweets toward certain women had just as much to do with his resignation as the social right, if not more. I know there are alot of misogynists in the GOP fold, but the thing with Internet comments and Tweets is that they never really disappear. There are enough screenshots of Grenell's tweets to give the President and his team plenty of ammo as the election draws closer.

I don't have any evidence for this, but my gut tells me that Romney WILL manage to appeal to both moderates and the hard right. He's been too good a liar for too many years to give up trying to square that circle. Obviously the Grenell publicity didn't help Romney with moderates, but I have no doubt that Romney has a good team, well-organized, disciplined, and committed to victory, who is looking into how to appeal to moderates.

But even the very best lies that money can buy may not be enough to win Romney enough moderate and hard-right votes, so he'll have to hone the themes that Obama hates America, Obama hates profitable companies, Obama hates individual achievement, Obama hates anyone who advanced without help from the government, etc. etc. If enough moderates and right-wingers think there's something not-quite-right about Obama, they may vote for Romney.

I may be more pessimistic than the facts warrant, but I remain gobsmacked by how competent a liar Mitt Romney is. I think he's a better liar than John Edwards! President Obama has worked very hard, and I would love to see him re-elected easily. But I'm afraid he's facing a very intelligent, cold, and determined opponent, with the best team that money can buy.

I think it's going to be more like the moderates and the hard right will switch into drone-mode, hold their noses and vote for Romney because he's the Republican candidate, and getting Obama out of office is more important than who their candidate is. Party über alles, y'know.

re: #34 Kragar

I promise when elected President, I will heal the wound that has divided this great nation for far too long, and will guarantee that "Buckaroo Banzai Versus The World Crime League" is filmed and in theaters by the mid term elections.

If you can also make sure that all back issues of the comics, the novels, the TV specials and the music of of the Hong Kong Cavaliers are re-released, you'd have my vote.
