Longtime Republican Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma criticized President Barack Obama over the president's surprise trip to Afghanistan Tuesday, describing the visit as "campaign related" and an "attempt to shore up his national security credentials."
"We've seen recently that President Obama has visited college campuses in an attempt to win back the support of that age group since he has lost it over the last three years," Inhofe said in a statement. "Similarly, this trip to Afghanistan is an attempt to shore up his national security credentials, because he has spent the past three years gutting our military."

There’s outrage in Norfolk, Va., today after a white couple was attacked by a group of dozens of black teenagers, and the local newspaper did not report on the incident for two weeks, despite the victims being employees of the paper.
Oh, yes, outrage. We love us some outrage.
Now, it is a very troubling story, of a community very much in trouble. Here is the article in the local VA paper, the paper which waited two weeks to write about, a wait that apparently outrages the WND readership:

Forster and Rostami wondered if the officer who answered their call treated all crime victims the same way. When Rostami, who admits she was hysterical, tried to describe what had happened, she says the officer told her to shut up and get in the car. Both said the officer did not record any names of witnesses who stopped to help. Rostami said the officer told them the attackers were "probably juveniles anyway. What are we going to do? Find their parents and tell them?"
The officer pointed to public housing in the area and said large groups of teenagers look for trouble on the weekends. "It's what they do," he told Forster.
Could that be true? Could violent mobs of teens be so commonplace in Norfolk that police and victims have no recourse?
Police spokesman Chris Amos said officers often respond to reports of crowds fighting; sirens are usually enough to disperse the group. On that night, he said, a report of gunfire in a nearby neighborhood prompted the officer to decide getting Forster and Rostami off the street quickly made more sense than remaining at the intersection. The officer gave them his card and told them to call later to file a report. [...]
Frankly, Norfolk is a community in need of some serious work. The newspaper column continues and explains its position:
Here's why their story is in the paper today. We cannot allow such callousness to continue unremarked, from the irrational, senseless teenagers who attacked two people just trying to go home, from the police officer whose conduct may have been typical but certainly seems cold, from the tweeting nitwits who think beating a man in Norfolk will change the death of Trayvon Martin.
Apparently that is not good enough for WND.

The Norfolk paper column discusses the problem of racial violence and how horrified one of the victims were when they checked online about the incident the next day. It should be noted that this story was reported in various outlets after it happened - there was no cover up.
The next day, Forster searched Twitter for mention of the attack.
One post chilled him.
"I feel for the white man who got beat up at the light," wrote one person.
"I don't," wrote another, indicating laughter. "(do it for trayvon martin)"
Anyway, back to WND. Oh, look at those comments at WND:

The live version of the speech he gave directly to the troops was also good, there were a couple of moments that were tough, but the message was right on. It was a speech about the troops and how it was their accomplishment. He ended by going through the SRO hangar to shake hands.

I wish they had left the hand shaking session in, the troops were swarming him, and very happy to meet him. This was big, and it was needed - there's been some setbacks and disillusionment from the bad eggs who got in the news lately. It was important for the soldiers to hear the CIC say he's proud of them.

Peaceful protest update: Female officer hit in the head with skateboard
May Day protest: LAPD officer hit in head with skateboard
The incident occurred near 4th and Hill streets when some protesters appeared to swarm a smaller number of LAPD officers, who in turn called for backup.
A police official said a female officer was struck in the head with a skateboard and taken to a hospital. The impact of the blow dented her helmet, the official said, but her injury appears not to be life-threatening.
Overall, however, officials said most of the thousands of protesters were nonviolent.

I am convinced the reason we stayed in Afghanistan after we left Iraq is that Afghanistan is a treasure trove of untapped mines, estimates are in the trillion dollar range of known reserves of a number of valuable metals, including rare earth metals and lithium, 2 key enablers for a modern electrical infrastructure and reduced reliance on fossil fuels.
True the Chinese and Indian firms have been the ones snatching up the mining rights from the Afghanistan government, but the fact is, just by increasing the supplies of these materials on the global market it will drive costs lower and benefit all manufacturers and consumers.
So we will probably be around until the new large mines are established and the Chinese and Indians bring in their own security forces to protect their mines and supply routes.
ANd just as important, we couldn't just let these mines fall into the hands of the Taliban. If they were to be the ones tapping the untold cash flow, it would make it almost impossible to stop them from gaining strength and influence throughout Afghanistan and beyond.
Its all about the mines. That's my take.

I got that it was a large crowd that was there, probably 30, with a smaller number who actually attacked the man and woman. WND is hardly reputable.

Our one group's get together had bonfire and cooking fire as separate venue. As the usual host had old trees that were being taken down due to age and dry rot there was always a supply of fuel for the former (including burning out stumps) and he got a good number of volunteers to help split logs for the bonfire in any case.
Helped that there were 3-4 male firebugs usually in attendance who were quite willing to tend it and haul more wood without being asked.

Feline Overlord update from this morning. (When he broke normal "get up!" routine by instead climbing under the covers and just going to sleep himself.)
At lunch I went and checked on him. He was sitting in the middle of the living room - definitely not normal. His right eye was closed and tearing heavily. And he hadn't eaten any food since last night.
So I called the cat hospital* and managed to hit an open appointment for a half four later. Not his normal doctor at the cat hospital, but one that has seen some of the other cats at one time or another.
Diagnosis is that he had a blood pressure spike that has also put excessive pressure in his eye. As a result there was some retinal bleeding and a partial glaucoma condition. (Which cats are generally not subject to, as compared to humans.) So he was in considerable pain and thus not happy.
Vet put some salve on the eye that numbed it a bit - mainly in order to examine it.
He's home, sleeping and eating. We've adjusted the dosage on his blood pressure medication (temporarily doubling it), plus he's getting eye drops (steroid, and also an antibiotic) 2-3 times a day for the rest of the week.
And there is a follow-up visit scheduled for Friday to see if things have improved. The vet thinks we caught it early enough that there might not be any permanent damage to his eyesight.
* - One advantage of living in a large city is specialized pet care. That the nearby Univ. of Penn has a very good veterinary department doesn't hurt either. The cat sitter I get for trips via the one service is actually a grad student there and a very good fit for watching an older cat.

That is actually to his credit, since many of the anti-Mitts are superstitious bigots, but it will not help him in the race. Beyond that, his decision to pander to the crazy train element will cost him far more in the general than it was ever worth in the primaries.

Some of them might prefer to remain in the opposition, especially people like Bryan Fischer. If you're the majority party, you have to get things done, and the makeup of the Congress is such that someone like Fischer would not be able to have it all his own way. The problem to me is the Republican Party leadership has enabled idiots like these guys by constantly pandering to them. Now that's not Mitt's fault because this started long before he first was elected but I think he hasn't helped matters by pandering to people like that. And by the way speaking as a swing state party, the party does it self no favors by have surrogates that refer to voters in this Democratic leaning area of the state as not being real Virginians.

You can't wage an entirely mobile defense in life, sooner or later you have to make a stand or you'll just get bullied eternally. The problem for Romney is that he's got little leverage to keep Fischer from flouncing if Fischer feels defied. If Fischer flounces, Romney is the one who loses the election. The only way to turn the tables would be for Mitt to get any ally who could win over some of Fischer's followers.

Romney seems to just want to be president.
Not one thing has changed, Romney hasn't presented a single idea that he actually stands for beyond his own personal ambition to lower taxes on himself and his hatred for President Obama. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet. Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates my capabilities. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. Bastards!
There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.
Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow, but at the top of the stairs.
I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released, and seems to be more than willing to return. Not all SoCons are Freepers. Romney needs conservatives, but he can win without some of the fringe. And even if he doesn't, a Mass Flounce by the fringe would cut the fringe's influence considerably, which would help every who isn't part of that fringe going forward.
I think you're starting to realize that the GOP does in fact really need those votes, that it's is in thrall to the social conservatives, and that if they lose them they'll be considerably weakened in the future.
Here's what you haven't addressed and are afraid to address, as the social conservatives have become more and more atavistic and drag the party further to the right, maintaining their support comes at the cost of alienating moderates and independent voters. The GOP has pandered its way into an unsustainable either or situation, one that cannot be fixed by simply replacing a few fringe figureheads.

Looking over their facebook and twitter history they seem to have previously been entirely involved in GOP politics, and this appears to be their first ad ever, so I'm guessing the money and the pro ad agency behind it really just needed their name.

You're right--they are worse than children. Most kids old enough to understand human sexuality don't have a problem with homosexuality. It's the older folks (Fischer and his followers, for example) who still can't get over the fact that the pee-pee goes in the "wrong hole" if you're gay.
And on that issue, fully one-third of gay couples don't even practice anal intercourse, while about one-third of straight couples do. So the whole ick factor that motivates much of the virulent homophobia is a misinformed figment of the religious extremists' imagination, be they Christian, Muslim, whatever.

Yikes. And yeah it is. I would hate to be an openly atheist person in this country given the hostility people have towards them. People should be free to believe or not to believe. I think that's part of the great thing about religious freedom. Not only do you have the freedom to worship peacefully but you have the freedom not to worship at all if you so wish. I'm not a religious person particularly and I enjoy not having to by law be a member of a certain church.

In my daily quest for the True Our America I come across numerous (very numerous, verging on innumerable) blogs with a steady stream of creationists' delusions. Occasionally I'm attempted to comment, but usually decide against it as for the most part it is a waste of time.
This was brought home to me recently when I left a meaningful post at one of the Reformed literalists sites, only to have my comment deleted.
They just don't want to hear the truth.
Still, the burden remains with me, that I have a (even if tiny) responsibility to correct the delusional from their own pitfalls and dead ends down which they seem insistent upon pursuing.
Perhaps it's a cross I must bear, yet it can be quite frustrating. I've dealt with creationists for 30 years and know their routines (they don't change much over time) and know that it is very rare indeed for one to get the epiphany that they don't really know that about which they preach so much.
On those rare occasions though I do come across some soul who is undergoing a frame change, sort of a mental rebuilding process (we all do this as we age, hopefully.)
All of this is a long way to get to the point that there have been a few changes over the years and the religious culture in this nation is undergoing another separation. Now, it's not as big as the Great Schism or even the Reformation, but there is something palpable happening in that the fundamentalists, while getting all the noisier and more dogmatic, are starting to be out numbered by a new form of American Christianity.
Now, the fundamentalists are lamenting this left and right, and attribute it to narcissism or selfishness on behalf of the younger generation. Maybe the younger ones are narcissistic... or maybe they are just burnt out from information overload, courtesy of Twitter and the internet.
To where this will lead I do not know. While the fundamentalist teenagers still do stunts like the walkout the other week of Dan Savage, a great number of 20-something and 30-something church-goers aren't falling in line.

So, a story’s making the rounds — again — on Tumblr that Bill Nye was booed for contradicting the Bible in Waco, Texas, by pointing out that the moon doesn’t generate its own light.
That did, in fact, happen…in April, 2006. And the next night, Nye got on MSNBC’s Countdown to discuss the incident. He insisted that he wasn’t heckled, but lost in all the hubbub was this even more important point he’d hoped to make (emphasis added):
UNGER: …Let’s start first, though, with what happened to you during that lecture. Now as a scientist you come across this sort of heckling from time to time?…
NYE: I have to tell you guys, I didn’t think I was heckled. People left. I don’t remember being heckled. I got a standing O at the end…

NYE: Let’s—I don’t want to get to far afield here and talk too much about me, but I was talking about how a very famous reverend, Jerry Falwell insisted that he thinks that global climate change, global heating is a myth, and he was going to buy a Chevy Suburban the next time he had an opportunity, and I pointed out that that’s bad.
And that the literal interpretation of the Bible, to me, is not satisfactory, it’s just not enough information…Some people left because they were concerned. Knock yourselves out. But people—we have taxpayers and voters that don’t believe in global heating, think it’s a myth. That’s not in anybody’s best interest. I’m going to tell you, as a scientist and so on, engineer and taxpayer and voter that global heating, global warming is a very serious problem. And you can’t ignore it. However, I guess I should have been clearer, in that what I perceive is happening is among those who want to label themselves "evangelical" but don't want to follow all the lines laid down by the fundamentalists of yesterday (which here in the US means the fundamentalism movement which started at the end of the 19th century and developed during the 20th in reaction to modernism.)
Part of this is change is that many churches, especially big congregations, these days want to be "non-denominational". The pitfall is of course the leader(s) of said congregations can be quite unaccountable; the upside for many church-goers is that such congregations are more flexible.
I see this as just the latest chapter is a long story of what has happened to Christianity since the Enlightenment, as group after group peels away from the establishment religious organization and sets up independent shop. Then, with the onset of the industrial revolution and the increased flow of peoples to new locations, the changes in lifestyles, and finally the ease of access to vast mounds of information - all of this means that the older concepts of religious structures don't work.
It's not that Americans are less religious than before (and this has been shown by surveys), but rather that religious institutions are no longer serving the needs.
I don't expect that all of today's Fundamentalists are going to turn into Universalists, but I do see the structured church losing influence as long as modernity channels modern societies and civilizations. None of this is particularly controversial for religion watchers, but I guess I'm saying it's just becoming more obvious.
Sure, if our civilization collapses then the old ways could return, with religious institutions taking over large portions of society. That might happen eventually, but not in 2012.

The Australian TV network ABC has an investigative reporting show called "Four Corners", and this week they are running an episode called Mitt Romney and the Mormons.
It's a strikingly blunt look at religion in America and how Mitt's Mormonism is disturbing the religious right, an the role of the religious right in GOP politics.
It's the kind of show that one doesn't find on US major networks, at least when discussing these kind of topics.
Not anything in there that is revelatory to me, but I am surprised at how different the Australian network comes off on this topic compared to US networks.
Recommend trying to find it somewhere to watch.

That ABC (Australia) documentary has some good footage in it.
Roughly at the halfway point, around 26:00, the host goes to interview one of the "12" who run the Mormon church, and gets a few insights.
What I though was most insightful though was the Freudian slip: the Mormon leader referred to President Obama as "Osama" - then corrected himself, but the producer left in the video (got to love those Australians.)
I'd put in on Youtube but I suspect that ABC would have it pulled, at least while the show is still fresh and being aired online in Australia. If you have a good proxy you might be able to view it online (at the above link.)
