Deposition Reveals: Breitbart Paid O’Keefe $65K for the ACORN Video

Payoff for fraud
Crime • Views: 30,677

[Link: www.10news.com…]

SAN DIEGO — Explosive new information obtained by 10News reveals for the first time the payout for an undercover video that helped bring down the group ACORN.

James O’Keefe and Hannah Giles, who played the role of pimp and prostitute in the video, were both deposed in a civil suit. O’Keefe wore a suit, while Giles donned a dark blouse, in contrast to the images that are familiar to many.

Back in 2009, they were the ones applying the pressure. After posing as pimp and prostitute, the two filmed undercover footage at an office in National City that appeared to show ACORN worker Juan Carlos Vera giving tips on bringing teen prostitutes across the border.

After the footage was posted by conservative activist Andrew Breitbart, Vera was fired. A state probe eventually confirmed Vera was simply playing along with the pimp conversation and had called police.

Eventually, amid a string of other videos, ACORN lost its federal funding and dissolved.
Vera filed suit, claiming O’Keefe had violated state privacy laws, and in a March deposition, there were some revealing statements from O’Keefe.

“He [Breitbart] said he would like to find a way for me to get paid to publish the videos,” testified O’Keefe.

O’Keefe gave details about the payout. He testified that before the San Diego undercover taping, Breitbart first saw undercover ACORN videos from the East Coast and wanted to see more.

“Now we have evidence for the first time, Breitbart agreed in advance to participate in the violation of California law,” said Gene Iredale, Vera’s attorney.

O’Keefe said he was eventually paid $65,000 by Breitbart to blog about the video.

Vera’s attorneys now plan to file suit against the estate of Breitbart, who recently died of heart failure.

As well it should be. Breitbart's estate is going to take a massive hit over this one: Illegal recording is a crime, and California has a "Son of Sam" law that prohibits anyone from profiting from a crime.

Partial repost because it fits here very well as well.

Why all the vicious lies and the new "journalism" created by Breitbart et al?

Why does it work?

Why does it have such traction?

An hypothesis:

Everyone knows that the bully is an insecure, cry baby, coward. The bully loves to dish, but can't take it. He or she suffers from such insecurity that he or she lives in a manufactured persecution complex. Some part of their mind suspects that their bullshit tough façade will crack under the slightest scrutiny and they can't take it. Some part of their mind knows that they are either cynical, corrupt politicians who would be tarred and feathered if the public really woke up and understood how little they serve the public, or, in the case of the Loeschs or Limbaughs et al... none too bright soulless, con artists with a desperate fear that at some point the jig must become up, or their audience who know deep down that they are actually really f'n dumb, that the world scares them and that they can not feel superior for any particular accomplishment.

Consider how commie regimes and fascist regimes respond to any information that does not fit their meme. The dictator knows that the second the general populace wakes up enough to think "we could do better without that loser" he is on a short trip to the back of a wall or the end of a noose if he can't flee his now enraged former subjects.

Now, no-one is talking about putting anyone wingnut against a wall... but the plutocrat and his pet politician knows that in a just world, prison would be waiting. The wingnut talking heads know that endless ridicule and more importantly the need to find an actual job is waiting. The little wingnut rank and file knows that the real world is waiting, where the truth is, being white doesn't make him special, many women are vastly smarter than him, his lack of education makes him essentially useless and some brown or Asian or non-Christian person who actually did get an education will be his boss.

That is scary stuff... So of course they reflexively attack and attack and attack to defend their bubble worlds.

Speaking of the Breitbart estate, did Miss Sherrod drop her case after Breitbart died? I haven't seen that suit in the news lately one way or another...

No, she didn't. Breitbart's estate's lawyers are currently appealing their failed attempt to have Sherrod's lawsuit dismissed on the anti-SLAPP statute to the DC Court of Appeals. Complicating matters, Lanny Davis sought to have his and Breitbart's appeals joined, which Sherrod opposed because the two cases hinge on somewhat different issues of law. In the Sherrod case the judge ruled that the anti-SLAPP rule didn't apply because Sherrod's lawsuit was filed before the law was passed and went into effect.

The Son of Sam laws you're referring to only apply to actual criminal convictions. Sherrod's civil lawsuit attaches to his estate because it was filed before he died. Totally different things.

Also, just so you're aware, the California Son of Sam law was struck down in Keenan v. Superior Court of Los Angeles County, in 2002.

Because, rightly or wrongly, its name was tainted by O'Keefe's videos. Also because ACORN did indeed have serious organizational problems that made it less effective than it could have been. To reform such an organization would do the left more harm than good.

K, I'm going to crash. Just like my car, which I woke up to with it's front end a bit crushed from being backed up on by a large pickup truck. Which subsequently left. Neighbor most likely, not coming forward.

Depends. Lying is a sin. But if a man is asked "Does this dress make my butt look big?", the *correct* answer is "Not at all, my love, and by the way, I love those shoes."

Which is a lie.

The honest answer, which is "No my love, I think it is your butt that makes your butt look big", while the truth, is the *wrong* answer.

Which results in ugly reality.

Well, sure, but that's just finding something to say to skew an encounter. If the new mother says "Isn't my new baby's face gorgeous?", sidestepping the direct question isn't going to feed the bulldog. Sometimes, the tactical lie is the way to go. Fortunately, it is very much a venial, not mortal, sin.

White people are getting ready for these black lying racist n*****s [note - this will be redacted by the LGF software; it was not on WND] and they will find out the old fashioned way. They have come a long way in the american society, and now they turn on the people that have really tried to help them. I slao blame the whote trash honkies, the lying liberal lame media (using these idiots like door mats) and instagating most racial violence. A parasite that fights the zombie-ant fungus has yielded some of its secrets to an international research team led by Penn State's David Hughes. The research reveals, for the first time, how an entire ant colony is able to survive infestations by the zombie-ant fungus, which invades an ant's brain and causes it to march to its death at a mass grave near the ant colony, where the fungus spores erupt out of the ant's head. "In a case where biology is stranger than fiction, the parasite of the zombie-ant fungus is itself a fungus -- a hyperparasitic fungus that specializes in attacking the parasite that turns the ants into zombies," Hughes said.

Obviously, this was intelligently designed./

The 17th century writer Jonathan Swift mocked the idea of self-similarity in natural philosophy with the following lines in his poem "On Poetry: A Rhapsody":[1]

...
"So nat'ralists observe, a flea
Hath smaller fleas that on him prey,
And these have smaller fleas that bite 'em,
And so proceed ad infinitum."
...

The Victorian era mathematician Augustus De Morgan expanded on this with a similar verse:[2]

"Great fleas have little fleas upon their backs to bite 'em,
And little fleas have lesser fleas, and so ad infinitum.
And the great fleas themselves, in turn, have greater fleas to go on,
While these again have greater still, and greater still, and so on."

Silver-based is certain to become exotic and expensive. Now that I have the time and cash for photography, I find there isn't much I want to shoot. Everything I ever cared to record was in NYC and Europe. There is a neglected cathedral in Cremona that needs a specialized camera rig to capture every square inch of it's walls.

On google review, it looks like it's been discovered. There are still dozens of others in N. Italy.

Yeah--as bad as kids, I would think. One of my first jobs as a kid was assistant at a 'catalog house', where the big mail-order books are created. One of our old guys had to shoot a large set to very precise sizing, with six or seven kids in it. (The composition was regulated in Chicago, by art directors who sent us a tracing to be taped to the 8x10 camera groundglass.) The kids weren't having any that day, so he called in the studio carpenter, took the kids' shoes off, had them nailed to the risers, and laced the brats back in.

Can't do that with Samis.

Good morning you people. Don't be surprised if Lugar loses his race next tuesday. He's run a horrible campaign.

[Link: www.indystar.com...]

Meanwhile, some of the senator's biggest-name supporters now whisper that they'll be surprised if he wins. And the Lugar campaign's strategy of throwing everything it can at Mourdock is having questionable results in a race that really is all about the incumbent.

My take: People needed to be reminded why they liked Lugar so much, why they've elected him so many times, and why he is a unique and crucial figure in the nation's capital. That message, though, has been overshadowed by the negativity -- and negativity simply isn't Lugar's strength. As one of my Twitter followers said Tuesday after being bombarded with gloomy ads: "I don't care for either one of them." If that sentiment is widespread, and if Lugar is seen six days before an election as just another mudslinging politician, then it's hard to overemphasize his political peril.

Instead of running on his strengths he decided to go all negative. I had every intention of voting for him but most of his ads are so embarrassingly bad that instead of biting my tongue and voting in the repub primary (I don't normally vote in primaries) I've decided to stay home and see how it plays out.

Richard Mourdock, state treasurer. He'll be the guy the tea party voters will go to but this shouldn't have even been a close race. Hoosiers are pretty middle of the road, Lugar is barely to the right of Evan Bayh (who would still be a senator had he not decided to leave),

U.S. rethinking Chen Guangcheng's wish to stay in China, official says
[Link: latimesblogs.latimes.com...]

BEIJING -- A U.S. official said Washington was reassessing a blind Chinese activist's wish to remain in China after learning that he now feared for his safety.

Chen Guangcheng's "view of what the best thing for him and his family is may be changing," said the official, who spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity Thursday.

The official did not say the U.S. could get Chen and his family out of China, but said Washington was trying to help the 40-year-old dissident.

Not really sure we believed that China would uphold its end of the bargain, but I'm not really seeing what alternative we had. He wants to protect his family, which is rather difficult as we don't have them in our custody, the Chinese do. Any deal made to get him and his family out, especially in light of Hillary's upcoming visit, would likely have been every bit as public and messy.

Well, there might be something going. But it's just not getting any publicity. And there's often political considerations driving that at the local level. DAs trying to make a reputation, and so forth.

Work continues apace with computer issues in Germany, testing interfaces in the US (for payments in Germany), and a general mish-mash of users forgetting passwords and needing reports to print out based on another currency. (The default is Brazilian Reals.)

On the Feline Overlord front things seem to be improving. Cat is sleeping, eating, and behaving normally. The eye issue seems to be improving, and there is a vet visit scheduled for tomorrow. However, he is demanding organic dye to be added to his tuna fish for some reason...

A lady is being interviewed at a Tickle Me Elmo plant for a position. The human resources rep looks over her resume and asks a few questions and then announces to her that she can start tomorrow. He instructs her to see the floor foreman in the morning.

Next morning she comes into work and the foreman tells her her duties and shows her the line. Later that morning the line steward goes to the foreman and complains about the new employee slowing down the line.

The foreman heads to the end of the line and sees the lady sewing on patches of cloth with 2 marbles in each one between the Elmo doll legs. He starts laughing and heads over to the lady. He stops her in mid sewing and with tears in his eyes says, "You must have misheard me this morning, I said to give every Elmo a test tickle when they come to the end of the line!"

Blood pressure issue causing excessive eye pressure and some retinal bleeding. Leading to something like glaucoma in the right eye. A lot of pain and thus probable departure from normal behaviors. (He went to the vet at lunch time that day.)

He is on increased amount of his blood pressure medication, eye drops (anti-biotic) and eye drops (steroid). It appears that his blood pressure is back down and with it the pressure and pain. Question now is whether there is any permanent sight damage - thus the follow-up visit tomorrow to see where things go from there.

(And to those who missed it the "organic dye in food" reference is to a plot point in David Brin's _Sundiver_. Obscure SF reference for the win.)

The Combatting Terrorism Center has released 17 declassified documents captured during the OBL raid last year. Summaries are provided.

From one of the letters (SOCOM-2012-0000008):

1) the permissibility of accepting financial assistance from other militant Palestinian groups (e.g., Fatah and Palestinian Islamic Jihad); 2) the permissibility of investing funds in the stock market in support of jihad; and 3) the permissibility of striking or killing drug traffickers in order to use their money, and even drugs, to lure their enemies who could in turn be used by Jaysh al-Islam as double-agents.

Wut? Permissibility? You're running around butchering innocent people and you're worried about the PERMISSIBILITY of where your effing FINANCING comes from??

There's other items, also noted in the accompanying summary report, that seem to suggest that bin Laden was getting worried about all the blowback. All the jihadis killing fellow Muslims was beginning to have an effect, but not in the way he had hoped. He was concerned about getting the jihadis to go after the US, not fellow Muslims.

So, for him to be worried about whether accepting funding from fellow terror groups or investing in stock markets was kosher is laughable. It's a group whose leader was realizing that he's led everyone astray and he didn't have any easy way to get back on track - not when so many of his underlings had been killed/captured.

Unmasked: Meet The FBI's Bridge Bomb Plot Snitch

MAY 2--The paid informant who helped orchestrate the FBI sting that resulted in the arrest of five anarchists for allegedly plotting to blow up an Ohio bridge is a convicted felon who was arrested on bad check and theft charges in the midst of his cooperation with federal investigators, The Smoking Gun has learned.

Shaquille Azir, 39, was named in a pair of felony indictments filed in January in Cuyahoga County, according to court records. Azir, who TSG has identified as the informant in the federal bombing case, is accused in the indictments of passing bad checks on July 25, 2011 and December 22, 2011.

Azir, pictured in the mug shot at right, “has been working as a source for the FBI since July 20, 2011,” according to the U.S. District Court complaint filed yesterday against the alleged bomb plotters. Wearing a body recorder, Azir captured the five self-styled anarchists plotting to use C-4 explosive to take down a Cleveland-area bridge.

Azir arranged for the purchase of the C-4 from an undercover FBI agent. He also fronted the alleged conspirators money for the buy of the material, which had been rendered inert by federal investigators. If the bombing case goes to trial, defense lawyers will certainly portray the 6’ 5”, 350-pound Azir as the plot’s instigator, a snitch who pocketed the FBI’s money to help entrap the five defendants, who range in age from 20 to 35.

Could this be a problem in court?

They like to believe the conspiracy theories that say the operation went on against Obama's wishes, that he only took credit after it succeeded, and that the military hates him now for taking credit.

At least, that's when they're not declaring that Obama ordered OBL killed "extrajudicially," which should be an impeachable offense, though they shrug off questioning about why he hasn't been impeached by saying the GOP won't do it so long as Democrats control the Senate.

re: #318 Obdicut

More than stupid. Truly demeaning to the men and women in uniform and those involved in the logistics, support, and intel ops that led to the raid that killed OBL and captured the trove of intel.

The order to go ahead on the raid was made by the President; without that decision, the raid would not have occurred at all. Success or failure was not determined by the President but by the SEAL team carrying out the mission (and it was a close call at that with the chopper crash).

It's to the President's credit that he went ahead and approved the mission knowing the risks and potential complications for US-Pakistani relations.

It's to the SEAL team's credit that they succeeded in the mission despite the obstacles and equipment problems (the chopper crash).

But to deny the President credit for the raid? That's just crazy talk.

I don't know but it will certainly fuel the conspiracy theories. I just assumed the informant was a professional FBI agent but it seems he was a career criminal working of a plea bargain. It does make some sense to use people like him, he has street cred, plausible stories of criminal activity, jail time, etc. I'm sure it will come up in court but I don't know how important it will be.

Syrian forces raid Aleppo University; 4 killed

BEIRUT — Syrian security forces stormed dormitories at Aleppo University to break up anti-government protests, killing at least four students and wounding several others in an hourslong rampage that ended Thursday morning and left part of the campus in flames, activists and opposition groups said.

They said the main university in Syria's largest city shut down in the wake of the violence, but it was not clear for how long.

Around 1,500 students had been protesting in student quarters next to the main campus late Wednesday when security forces and pro-regime gunmen swept into their residences, firing tear gas at first, then live ammunition to disperse them.

The raid followed an attack on the protesters by pro-regime students armed with knives, activists said.

...The university was founded in 1958. The school's website has a picture of Assad with the words: "I Believe in Syria."

Republican National Committee used Philippines firm to set up call blasting Obama on unemployment

WASHINGTON--The Republican National Committee on Thursday stepped up its assault on President Barack Obama in advance of his campaign formal kick off Saturday in Ohio and Virginia--hitting him on "high unemployment" in the U.S. as the RNC used a firm located in the Philippines to set up the "messaging" call.

The call featured RNC Chair Reince Priebus, Virginia GOP state party chair Pat Mullins and Ohio state party chair Bob Bennett. The conference call was part of the roll out of the new GOP slogan, "Hype and Blame," a deliberate play on Obama's 2008 "Hope and Change" slogan.

When I called in for the conference call, I asked where the operator I talked to was based and was told Manila...

There's no way to determine if these idiots came up with the idea themselves or if they could possibly get the materials (or have the drive to go through with getting them) if not for the paid informant. Not only did he have a financial incentive to set them up he also had a legal incentive. That alone should equate to reasonable doubt.

Yeah, as I said yesterday, there's two kinds of 'informants'. The kind who are doing it to reduce their sentences or make a charge go away, and get paid, and the FBI agents themselves going undercover. The latter are far preferable, but often can't be used.

The problem with using criminals as informants is that you can't really rely on them to honestly judge how much influence they've had on what went on, how much they were a driving force.

I still have zero sympathy for anyone who wants to bomb a bridge, whether they came up with the idea are just going along with it.

Based upon the story over at HuffPo, the circumstances of this whole issue are all over the place. Just on first glance, it looks like the campaign wanted to put the lid on Grenell in the hopes that the issue would die down, but Grenell thought that such a "passive defense" would not cut it and walked away. It's hard to say if that's really the case or not, as the campaign isn't really making an effort to do more than sweep the entire incident under the rug.

North Korea jams signals, disrupts South flights

Pyongyang: South Korea has reportedly accused North Korea of sending out jamming signals to disrupt its civilian flights.

Martin Streetly, an expert from IHS Jane, a firm offering intelligence, consultancy and advertising solutions to the defence and national security sectors, said Pyongyang certainly has the capability of jamming GPS signals, and is believed to have been doing so since at least 2010.

It is believed that North Korea obtained the jamming devices from Russian companies and that these devices are effective for a stretch of about 150 miles if mounted on a structure such as a television transmission antenna.

We got a baker's dozen in Yemen yesterday :)

Officials: Drone strike kills 13 suspected militants in Yemen

Sanaa, Yemen (CNN) -- A U.S. drone hit an al Qaeda training site in southern Yemen, killing 13 suspected militants, three security officials said.

The airstrike Wednesday is one of a series of attacks on al Qaeda hideouts expected in Abyan province in the next two weeks, the officials said. They will target Jaar, Lowder and Zinjibar districts.

At least two U.S. drone strikes are conducted daily since mid-April in southern regions controlled by al Qaeda fighters, said a Yemeni presidential aide who asked not to be identified due to the sensitivity of the issue.

None of the major Republican candidates had a spine when it comes to the bigots and nuts in the GOP. Some of them, like Bachmann and Santorum, were true believers in all that bigoted fanatical nonsense, and others, like Newt, Mitt, and Luap Nor, just exploited that bigotry for votes.

Unmasked: Meet The FBI's Bridge Bomb Plot Snitch

Could this be a problem in court?

I don't know but it will certainly fuel the conspiracy theories. I just assumed the informant was a professional FBI agent but it seems he was a career criminal working of a plea bargain. It does make some sense to use people like him, he has street cred, plausible stories of criminal activity, jail time, etc. I'm sure it will come up in court but I don't know how important it will be.

Happens all the time.
Typically the AUSA will put the informant on the stand and under direct; he will question the informant about his criminal background. The informant will be coached to answer truthfully about his criminal background so the informant can't be impeached for lying about same.
Once the informant has testified about his criminal history, it can't be used under cross examination by defense to impeach testimony about the criminal counts in the indictment.
During the AUSA's summation to the jury at the end of the trial, the AUSA will tell the jury that you can't use good citizens to uncover crimes exposed in this trial. You have to depend on fellow criminals to get the facts to convict the defendants and insure public safety.
A good trial is like a good play.

From Document SOCOM-2012-0000004:

In general, and no matter what material we send, I suggest that we should distribute it to more than one channel, so that there will be healthy competition between the channels in broadcasting the material, so that no other channel takes the lead. It should be sent for example to ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN and maybe PBS and VOA. As for Fox News, let her die in her anger. That is if there was no agreement with a specific channel to publish a specific material, or conduct an interview, or the like.

They're discussing the merits of going to specific US broadcast/cable networks for sending out the 10th anniversary message. They then focus on which individual journalists to communicate with, and Fisk is among those highlighted. Also mentioned is Brian Ross b/c of his AQ/terrorism coverage.

In Britain, the two journalists Atwan and Fisk, and probably others, in America Brian Russ, Simon Hirsh and Jerry Van Dyke and others, in Canada Eric Margolis and Gwynne Dyer. In Europe, the Norwegian journalist who spent some time with the students in Kroner and released a film that was condemned in the West because he shows that the students are humans that have families and children and that they laugh and eat as the rest of the people.

Addendum: it seems that the focus of the document is media strategy in general, and how to best utilize various media outlets around the world, and the problems/benefits with each, including al Jazeera, jihadi forums, and other media outlets both online and broadcast.

I politely explained that with the internet, we don't have to rely on anyone else's interpretation of facts. We can go to the source document/video and review it for ourselves.

Rachel Maddow's explanation of how the parties seem to be dealing with two sets of facts comes to mind.

Woman accused of severing man’s penis in fatal Dallas stabbing

The argument got heated, a knife was produced, and when it was over a man lay dead in a Dallas hotel room with multiple stab wounds and his penis severed, according to Dallas police.

Now, Cristal Paulette Richardson, 28, is behind bars in the Dallas County Jail, charged with murder in the gruesome weekend slaying of Cedric Lamont Owens, 34.

Dallas police responded to an injured person call at a Motel 6 in the 8500 block of East R.L. Thornton Freeway on Saturday and discovered Richardson in a stairway with blood on her hands and body, Dallas police said.

The hotel manager opened the door to the room and police found Owens lying dead on the floor, just inside the entrance. He suffered multiple stab wounds, police said.

The victim’s throat was cut and there was “traumatic amputation of the penis and scrotum,” The Dallas Morning News reported, citing officials documents.

re: #443 Gus

In 2003 it became publicly known that Bennett was a high-stakes gambler who reportedly had lost millions of dollars in Las Vegas.[8] Some felt it conflicted with his public image as a leading voice for conservative morals. Criticism elevated in the wake of Bennett's publication, The Book of Virtues, in which he argued for self-discipline— an attribute at odds with problem gambling. Bennett and Empower America, the organization he co-founded and headed at the time, opposed the extension of casino gambling in the states.[9]
Bennett never said he had a problem with gambling and has maintained that his habit did not put himself or his family in any financial jeopardy. After Bennett's gambling became public, he said that he did not believe that his habit set a good example, that he had "done too much gambling" over the years, and that his "gambling days are over". "We are financially solvent," his wife Elayne told the USA Today. "All our bills are paid." She added that his gambling days are over. "He's never going again," she said.[10]
Several months later, Bennett qualified his position, saying "So, in this case, the excessive gambling is over." He explained that "Since there will be people doing the micrometer on me, I just want to be clear: I do want to be able to bet the Buffalo Bills in the Super Bowl."[11]

Bennett: "[Y]ou could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down" 2005

Again, not a full rendering of the statement:

Addressing a caller's suggestion that the "lost revenue from the people who have been aborted in the last 30 years" would be enough to preserve Social Security's solvency, radio host and former Reagan administration Secretary of Education Bill Bennett dismissed such "far-reaching, extensive extrapolations" by declaring that if "you wanted to reduce crime ... if that were your sole purpose, you could abort every black baby in this country, and your crime rate would go down." Bennett conceded that aborting all African-American babies "would be an impossible, ridiculous, and morally reprehensible thing to do," then added again, "but the crime rate would go down."

It is, I think, more telling in it's long form. Racism and stupidity.

Arizona Immigration Law Sponsor Russell Pearce Defends Past Friendship With Massacre Gunman

As Russell Pearce’s power in Arizona politics grew over the years, so too did questions about his past friendship with a man who went on to become the most vocal neo Nazi in the state.

So when that neo Nazi reportedly massacred four people in a suburban Phoenix home before turning the gun on himself on Wednesday, reporters naturally turned to the former state Senate president and primary sponsor of Arizona’s tough immigration law to comment on the killings.

After resisting for hours, Pearce relented late in the day and released a lengthy statement detailing how he came to know JT Ready and what eventually led to their falling out. Multiple media outlets in Arizona posted the statement in whole.

EXPOSED: Romney Campaign Silenced Gay Spokesman To Avoid Confronting Hate Groups, Misled Reporters

When a CNN anchor asked campaign spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom about Grenell, the top aide prefaced his remarks by saying: “First let me correct you. He wasn’t two weeks on the job. He was scheduled to start on May 1.” Other Romney-friendly media, vaguely sourcing the campaign, addressed Grenell’s departure the same way, implying that he left the job before he’d started it. When the Washington Post reported that Grenell was “kept under wraps,” Washington Examiner’s Byron York pushed back:

But Romney campaign officials say strongly that they did not keep Grenell under wraps or in any other way discourage him from taking the job. First, they point out that at the time (last week) in which Grenell was supposedly being held back, he was not yet an employee of the Romney campaign. Like a number of other new hires, officials say, Grenell was getting ready to move to Boston to begin work May 1. Romney officials fully anticipated he would begin his public role as spokesman then.

The only problem? Grenell could well have been set to officially become an employee of the Romney campaign on May 1, but he’d already started working for the team.

As Andrew Sullivan reported last night and the New York Times later confirmed, Grenell helped organize a Romney campaign conference call to pre-empt Vice President Joe Biden’s foreign policy speech last week. Sullivan reported that after Grenell’s voice was not heard on the April 26 call, which he’d helped set up, people started to ask questions:

Some even called and questioned him afterwards as to why he was absent. He wasn’t absent. He was simply muzzled. For a job where you are supposed to maintain good relations with reporters, being silenced on a key conference call on your area of expertise is pretty damaging. Especially when you helped set it up.

Yes, it is believed that they've got sufficient nuclear material for perhaps six weapons, but they've got the not inconsiderable problem of delivering the weapon to target.

There's no reason to believe that they've got a workable ICBM, and their short/medium range missiles may be similarly suspect. They could probably detonate a weapon smuggled into South Korea or use it to take out a significant portion of the DMZ, but they lack the ability to sustain a prolonged conflict.

To them, the nukes are a way to blackmail the South and everyone else into giving them food aid.

So much for North Korean juche.

Vocabulary for the afternoon:

The Juche Idea, sometimes spelled Chuch'e (Korean pronunciation: [tɕutɕʰe]) is a political thesis of Kim Il-sung, the founder of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, which says that the Korean masses are the masters of the country's development. From the 1950s to the 1970s, Kim elaborated the Juche Idea into a set of principles that the government uses to justify its policy decisions. Among these are independence from great powers, a strong military posture, and reliance on Korean national resources. The name comes from juche, meaning "main body" or "mainstream," and is sometimes translated in North Korean sources as "independent stand" or "spirit of self-reliance." It has also been interpreted as "always putting Korean things first."[1]:414 According to Kim Il-sung, the Juche Idea is based on the belief that "man is the master of everything and decides everything."

But probably also enough to also deter an invasion intended to overturn the regime, and explicit support of any sort of revolutionary movement as well. Which is probably the greatest goal - ensure a minimum of external interference beyond that which they can cajole and control.

What are the odds that they would sell one to Iran or some terrorist organization? They do need money.

Exactly. Critique of capitalism!= leftism.

Tea Party started out being anti TARP, anti-big banks, Wall Street, etc. Once Dick Armey and Republicans took over the movement that all changed.

‘N Korea has enough uranium for 6 nuclear bombs’

And they have enough missiles to deliver them across the cattle trail beside their nuclear lab.

Again, what would Iran do with it? They've got no working ICBMs of their own, no bombers, and the size of an atomic bomb based solely on uranium would make transporting it rather difficult. They could do as the NorKs are doing, keeping it as an insurance policy against invasion, but as a weapon it's rather lacking.

Video game based on Thoreau’s ‘Walden’ promises to be extremely ironic

...The game’s trailer doesn’t give much sense of what gameplay will actually be like — they say it will “embody the nature of the experiment that Thoreau set for himself,” but what the heck does that mean? I’m envisioning something like “Press B to contemplate leaf” [leaf contemplation bar goes to maximum]. Obviously you can also walk around and touch a bush and catch a fish and probably garden … so basically, it’s like “Plants vs. Zombies” without the zombies. Just “Plants.”

Another cliche: environmentalism is a lefty thing. Actually a right-wing nationalist who loves "mighty oaks" or "gentle birches" (depending on their country of origin) or someone with neo-Pagan worldview (which can be compatible with extreme right views) can be very concerned about the state of the environment.

Ron Paul’s Delegate Antics Could Spell Trouble For GOP Convention

With Newt Gingrich finally out of the race, there’s only one other candidate standing between Mitt Romney and the official nomination. And while Ron Paul doesn’t have a chance to stop Romney, he seems poised to make some trouble for him in at the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

Across the country, fired-up Paul supporters are crashing the delegate-nominating process long after the rest of the party has moved onto the general election. Exploiting a byzantine nominating process that often flies under the radar, supporters are working the system to gain delegate majorities in states Paul lost in the primaries or caucuses (he hasn’t won a single contest outright).

It was very Ron Paul influenced early on. I remember the conservatives I knew laughing at it when it was more that but the second Obama got in, they were on it quicker than you could say tea.

With more than 100 endorsements already in his political pocket, GOP primary frontrunner Mitt Romney has another notable face behind him.

After dining at a Tea Party event on Tuesday, former Arizona state Senate President Russell Pearce proclaimed his support for Romney, citing similar views on immigration as his key reason.

"His immigration policy is identical to mine," Pearce said, according to The Washington Post. "Attrition by enforcement. It's identical to mine -- enforce the laws."

WAPO’s Glenn Kessler Gives Three “Pinocchios” To Claim of Doctored Emails
It has long been part of the Washington game for officials to discredit a news story by playing up errors in a relatively small part of it. Obesity is on the rise-- as is the incidence of Heart Disease, Diabetes, Stroke and various forms of Cancer. A groundbreaking scientific study showed how easily (and inexpensively) the rate of occurrence of these and other serious illness could be greatly reduced-- but this information ...
