Mitt Romney fails to realize that no one can escape the event horizon of stupidity:
For Romney, a warm embrace from Bachmann, a chilly one from Gingrich
[...]
"This is what victory looks like," Bachmann declared at an event in Portsmouth, Va., on Thursday as she took the stage with the presumptive Republican nominee and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell nearly four months after she dropped her own bid for the White House.
"When you look at 30-plus months of unemployment above 8%; when you look at doubling of America's energy prices at the pump, when you look at debt accumulation in excess of $5 trillion under his watch, there is no question in my mind that Americans will go to the polls and they'll be saying 'Mr. President, you're fired,'" Bachmann said to applause. "Instead, we will soundly stand for someone who believes in America, who believes in our children, who believes in the hope of opportunities for this next generation."
[...]
Oh yes, prolonged unemployment, significant increases in debt, and America's addiction to gasoline - yes, all those look like "victory" to me.
It's all so clear now.

No, we don't do things better in this country:
US health care spending highest, Japan lowest: Study
A study of 13 industrialized countries released Thursday showed Japan spends the least on health care, while the United States spends the most without providing superior care for the money.
The United States spent nearly $8,000 per person in 2009 on health care services, more than Australia, Britain, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden or Switzerland.
Japan spent the least -- $2,878 per capita in 2008 -- according to the report by The Commonwealth Fund, a private foundation that promotes improved health care in the United States.
US health care spending amounted to more than 17 per cent of gross domestic product in 2009, while Japan's was under nine per cent of GDP.

Key points of the final resolution include:
-The right of young people to decide on all matters related to their sexuality
-Access to sexual and reproductive health services, including safe abortion where legal, that respect confidentiality and do not discriminate
-The right of youth to comprehensive sexuality education
-Protection and promotion of young people’s right to control their sexuality free from violence, discrimination and coercion
Of course, Planned Parenthood was involved, so it must be a bad thing.

You can include issues like abortion and contraception into the mix but there's a limit as to how Obama can and should run this campaign. Yes, it's about social issues but to a limit. It's not about medical marijuana; drones; gay marriage; etc. Some of that may play locally but not for the president. To think otherwise runs counter to polling done for close to 50 years and election results within that same time frame. When you say Wall Street "running amok" you are in fact talking about economic issues.

Right. I mean they need to continue to paint Romney as the corporate candidate. Which is what he is. Do Americans want a president whose only concern is that of the Fortune 500s; Wall Street fat cats; etc. Or do they want a president that cares about the man or woman on the street? That requires a delicate balance of course since the idea is not really to deconstruct said corporations or banks either. It's all a matter of reform that still needs to be done.
There are also global questions too. How everything seems to be falling apart yet one man can buy a single painting for a whopping 100 million dollars. When it seems like Greece has finally come close to resolving there fiscal problems another one props up like Spain which has now entered a deep recession and record unemployment. The UK has also double dipped. And on and on it goes. The consistent them here though remains the economy and financing.

I think I have issues understanding because the economy doesn't stop at the border. Some voters understand that, I'm not sure most do.
Many voters don't compute what is happening in other countries to their own lives. They don't care either. Which is sad and stupid.
Perhaps the best approach is to keep focusing on "how is preventing (insert social issue here) going to help the economy?
And the constant attacks on corporate tax incentives etc.

Today I found an awesome solution for a programming problem that will save me a lot of time in development. Basically, it lets me completely eliminate one time-consuming step when I update a Javascript or CSS file -- which is very often!
This uses an Apache mod_rewrite trick, combined with some PHP, to automatically force browsers to reload cached JS and CSS files when they're changed. It's one of those solutions that once you find, it seems so obvious.

Russia warns on missile defence deal with Nato and US
Russia says it is prepared to use "destructive force pre-emptively" if the US goes ahead with controversial plans for a missile defence system based in Central Europe.
The warning came after the Russian defence minister said talks on missile defence were nearing a dead end.
Moscow fears that missile interceptors would be a threat to Russia's security.
But the US and Nato say they are intended to protect against attacks from Iran or North Korea.
"A decision to use destructive force pre-emptively will be taken if the situation worsens," chief of the Russian defence staff Gen Nikolai Makarov said...

From the article:
There have been at least three House contempt actions against the Executive Branch in the past 30 years.
In 1983, Congress found EPA administrator Anne Gorsuch Burford in contempt for failing to produce subpoenaed documents.
In 1998, the GOP-controlled House Oversight committee found Attorney General Janet Reno in contempt for failing to comply with a subpoena on campaign finance law violations.
In 2008, the Democratic-led House Oversight Committee found former White House counsel Harriet Miers and Chief of Staff John Bolton in contempt for failing to cooperate with an inquiry into whether a purge of federal prosecutors by the Bush administration was politically motivated. Congress went to federal court to seek enforcement of that contempt action, but a compromise was reached with the Executive Branch before any court decision was final.
Do you remember any of these incidents? Me neither. Do you think anybody decided their vote on any of these incident? Me neither. I promise you this will not be the big deal you or the GOP thinks it will be. The right has been howling about Fast and Furious for the last year and not even the moon is listening.

The problem is that browsers automatically save local copies of Javascript and CSS files when you visit a web page - "cached" copies. This is a good thing because it speeds up page loading when the browser can just load a previously saved file from the cache instead of getting it over the Internet.
But it's not such a good thing when you edit one of those files to add an earthshaking new feature - because the browser just keeps loading the old one from the cache until it "expires," which can take up to a month. Or more. So visitors won't see the earthshaking new feature until their browsers are forced to reload those edited files.
That's what this solution addresses, with a really nice method that lets me have all the speed benefits of caching, but still automatically forces a reload whenever I release an earthshaking new feature.
It replaces an older, kludgier, and possibly slower method: appending a version number to the file's URL as a query string.

Issa is off on one of his famous toots, I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that Holder ain't gonna be held in contempt. Many of the claims in Issa's leaked draft have been proven to be bullshit, Holder has testified before Congress 7 times in the matter, and the few documents that have been withheld pertain to the ongoing investigation. It's telling that Issa leaked this without even showing it to members of the House Oversight Committee first and that both Boehner and Cantor refuse to state their support for charges.

A new report from MSNBC, however, provided an inside account of how Wells Fargo’s robo-signing department works. Unqualified employees with salaries ranging from $30,000 to $50,000 are given titles like “vice president of loan documentation” so they can sign foreclosure documents. Actual supervisors institute quotas on employees, forcing them to sign a certain number of foreclosure files each day — sometimes telling them they can’t eat breakfast or take lunch until they’re done. Documents required for homeowners to avoid foreclosure were ignored, left sitting on an unattended fax machine.
The result: the nation’s largest mortgage servicer often improperly foreclosed on homeowners who weren’t past due or owed little interest while pushing the files out the door as fast as possible, as an insider told MSNBC:
Some families apparently were denied loan modifications after only cursory interviews, she said. Other borrowers applying for help sent comprehensive personal financial documents to a fax machine that she discovered had been unattended for weeks. Others landed in foreclosure after owing interest payments of as little as $1.18 a day, according to documents she said she reviewed. [...]
“There was one file where they weren’t even past due and they were in foreclosure status,” the loan processor said. “They’re pushing these files and pushing these files….”

6 Ways Iron Man Is Objectively Better Than Batman
Both Noun-men are easily the best heroes in their universes. They prove that being smart is better than being naturally talented, and also better than being so dumb that you fall into toxic waste vats and don't even know to die from it. Batman beats Superman because when your idea of the perfect hero is "super invincible and he can do anything," you're 7 years old. Which is cool, and we're glad you love comics, but you are 7 years old. Iron Man is better than Captain America because "drug-fueled" and "foreigner-killing" accidentally became everything people hate about America since Cap was invented.
But every time I see two heroes in proximity, I have to decide who'll win, because I've found a way to get paid for remaining a child. Anyways, I've settled on a winner, and the answer is Bat-blasphemous. We'll stick to their recent movies, because that's what most people have seen, and they have two each, so it's fair. Ignoring Batman's entire glorious comics history might seem stupid, but since that's what DC Comics has already done with the recent reboot, we're kind of stuck with it. Besides, if I wanted to be unfair, I'd include Batman & Robin.

The facts are (as I see them) that income discrepancy isn't a matter of "share the wealth" socialism propaganda. It isn't lazy people wanting to get on the dole.
It's a matter of preserving the peace. It is an economic matter. Angry people who have their Constitution right of equal opportunity curtailed by the "elite" thru government and banking, in this country, have the the Constitutional right to revolt.
I can't think of anything more devastating to the economy than an angry mob. The answer isn't gun control, more police, private prisons or tougher laws on immigrants and criminals.
It is entitlements, it is Universal Health Care, it is freedom of choice, it is prosecuting Wall Street and Congressional Criminals.

There are companies that have either run their course as far as their products being marketable or have been mismanaged near to the ground for many factors.
Sometimes a buy-out is the only way. when management won't re-org. --yes people lose their jobs etc. Companies and individuals have a responsibilty to remain marketable and change can be hard for those entrenched in the far gone status quo.

I don't really see it that way. After all, Michael Bloomburg is quite liberal, yet he has consistently supported the NYPD whenever it has needed to forcefully deal with 'Occupy'. Factcheck's article there is fucking horrible, actually.
Saying that the Democrats proposed slashing something when they were doing it in order to make deals with the GOP is silly.
They also mix up the tenses-- they accuse Obama of saying that women benefit from the fund, whereas what he actually said:
Women, in particular, will benefit from this Prevention Fund, which would provide for hundreds of thousands of screenings for breast and cervical cancer.
And this is true, as Factcheck acknowledges.
I have no idea how Factcheck, looking at the unprecedented wave of laws against abortion, the opposition to the fair pay for women act, etc. etc. can be blind to the GOP's agenda on women.

So earlier this year the Dems were going to cut this same fund for preventative care to pay for extended unemployment?! Ahem, that's hard to accept as equitable if true.
Well. To be honest. White male millionaire Anderson Cooper who works for CNN who also employes Dana Loesch is trying to discredit the notion of a "war on woman" based on this single piece of legislation instead of looking at the overall picture. To that end he's not being honest.

How do we then explain the multiple sources of agreement like politifact on that very issue? "Lie of the year" or "whopper" are characterizations of a big damn lie. Convincing seniors the medicare changes slated for people years in the future would happen to them, right away.

So what, Dark? The article ends with a veiled suggestion that the 'war on women' is a fiction, and that's what we're responding to. I know that you don't want to deal with the abortion issue, but it's one that is of grave importance, not just to women, but to our society as a whole.
You need to comprehend just how angry the GOP is making women, and just how much it's damaging our country and society for them to be embracing such an anti-science, anti-20th century point of view.
They are hurting the country.

The Republican plan will end medicare as we know it.
If you stop making Medicare a government system and instead hand out X amount of dollars and tell people to go buy insurance that ends medicare as we know it, it changes it beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Passing the buck down the line to us who aren't currently on the medicare system is just shameless pandering and trying to avoid having anybody realize just what a sucky system it would be.

I don't give a flying toss about the reasons they are doing this, abortion doesn't happen (or not happen) in a vaccume, if women can't control when they become pregnant or not or if that pregnancy "takes" or not, they are bound to be seen as an inferior choice in the working community to men of the same general level of experience.

That (right or not in the end) has nothing to do with the point I made about the lie. Can we address the wisdom of advertising changes set for years later would affect seniors right away, in the heat of a close election?
Then sure lets address how to best keep the medicare promise of care for the elderly that paid in all of their their working lives.
The lie was that the Republican plan destoryed Medicare as we know it.
I don't recall the lie of the year being that it would do it right away.
Show me links that prove otherwise.

Dark, wake-up.
Not all cases of a women not wanting sex are that cut and dried. By the time she got the rape/incest adjudicated the baby would be born.
Everytime a wife has sex with her husband--she really wants too?
Saturday night after he has had a 6-pack or two --yeah, he's going to wear condom --right (wink wink).

The ads also say: “Seniors would be forced to pay $6,400 more.” But that’s not true for today’s seniors — including the gray-haired people pictured in the ads. The $6,400 figure is a fair interpretation of what a Congressional Budget Office report projected — for somebody turning age 65 in the year 2022 or later. Under the Republican plan, anyone age 55 or older would not have been affected at all, save for the repeal of a sweetened prescription-drug benefit contained in the new health care law.

Why should the circumstances that led up to conception attach to whatever status the fetus has? This is literally making the offspring pay for the sins of the father, something the fetus has absolutely no control over and would in no way impinge on its personhood after birth.
This is why status via sentience makes much more sense, since it's already the criteria we use to determine the end of personhood, cf Terri Schiavo.

No. It does not. Their contempt for the life of that child is pretty clearly seen in the complete absence of pro-life groups' involvement--and they're plenty loud when involved, we'd notice them--in any sort of legislation or organizing designed to make sure that child eats, or gets a decent education, or is protected in any way, shape or form from any harm that follows birth.

Found a nice condition Ithaca 37 pump in 16 gauge. Little gunshop down in the hippie section (yes, literally) of town. Mislisted on his web site with the pump action rifles, I scooted down there to see if it was real. Yep. Little scruffy, but mechanically perfect. Just about the ultimate pump gun for birds - light, fast handling & 16 won't beat your shoulder up like 12 does but puts 1 oz of shot out there better and further than 20 does. All in all, a great old fart chambering. Takes reloading to afford these days but that's the only way I can afford my .45 colt either
Best part? $150 out the door. 1957 mfg based on the serial & Modified choke so it's safe with steel shot. I can't wait for Pheasant & Duck season to get here.

Horseshit. All that would earn them would have been a bad reputation. Their purpose was (A) Turn failing companies around, or (B) provide capital to allow growing companies to expand.
What planet do you live on? The banks, politicians, mortgage companies, investment firms with their toxic derivatives, etc. Do you think they gave a damn about their reputations? Maybe a little, but certainly not as much as the bottom line.
Corporations are in business to maximize profits in the short term; it's a naive quaint notion to think they care so much about their reputations that they wouldn't do mean things to get really rich.

'Revolt' to me implies violence. I do not accept the idea of a "peaceful revolt".
Lord, it's called an election.

Well then maybe it's time that you back off talk of violent revolution and veiled threats to other commenters.

Elections are part of the existing democratic process. That's not a 'revolt' by any definition I've heard of.

I threaten no one and I don't talk about 'violent revolution'. Don't make a mountain out of a molehill.
Going upstairs...

Bullshit, it's EXACTLY what you just did. Flip flopping like a Romney-bot, you're getting in full campaign mode, huh?

I am part of the peaceful revolt of lifelong Republicans who want nothing to do with the 2012 version of the Tea Party/GOP. I am ashamed at what the GOP has become. It is the John Birch Society in charge now. Good luck.

The GOP has transformed from a pragmatic problem solving political party into a church, complete with dogma just as strict and irrational.

The modern GOP/Tea Party would puke out Nixon, Reagan, and both of the Bush's for being too liberal. They only tolerate Mitt now because they have no other choice. I can't recall either party hating their nominee any worse than the GOP/Tea Party hates on Mitt.

Absolutely, and notice how Republican politicians don't even talk about either of the President Bushes...partly because in retrospect they don't pass the new farther right conservative purity tests.

Demonstrated in favor of the draft? There's a campaign commercial.

Wrong. If they were concerned about the babies they wouldn't be gutting every assistance program we have. They would be cheering for no co-pay birth control and proper sex education that included TRUE information.
This about domination of women. Babies be damned to them.
Once they pop out, it's an Ayn Rand world.
…
Btw, Ayn Rand was pro-choice.
