Jonathan Coulton: Down Today

Gonna throw a party on the day you go
Music • Views: 25,591

Tell me what you think I’ve been doing wrong
I’m too high to hear what you say
Maybe write a letter if it takes too long
I won’t come down today

Found a pretty girl who loves me true
I don’t ask why, and she won’t say
I’m about ten miles over you
I won’t come down today

I just bought a balloon
Me and the girl, takin’ a ride
Float just under the moon
Dumping your things, over the side

If you’re gonna leave, could you let me know?
I won’t try to make you stay
Gonna throw a party on the day you go
I won’t come down today

I just bought a balloon
Me and the girl, takin’ a ride
Float just under the moon
Dumping your things over the side

I might be coming home but I don’t know when
I’m up so high, I might float away
I don’t ever wanna come down again
I won’t come down today
I won’t come down today
I won’t come down… today

Good stuff. Nice lyrics. Might make a good traveling song.

Well, I got to see The Avengers tonight and I will say that if you have the chance, go see it in theaters. If you can find an Imax theater showing it in 3D, even better. Whedon really hit it out of the park with this one.

Nah, it's cool, I won't give anything away. But I will say that the local theater had an awesome deal going on. For $40, you could not only see all the Marvel movies leading up to The Avengers, but also attend the midnight release.

I'll have to wait till Saturday. The best 3D showing tomorrow night at Muvico is effectively sold out. But I got good seats for Saturday and it's half-price wine night on Saturday at Nick's Fish Market, so no major loss.

I just watched Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Rooney Mara was good, but Noomi Rapace pretty much defined that role.

Are they going to follow up Dragon Tattoo with the other two books with Craig and Mara? Because the first book was really the best of the trilogy.

I'll rent it eventually. I just don't like Robert Downey Jr. even in fantasy movies. though, to me, Sherlock is far worse than Ironman. On the gripping hand, I do, really really really, like the modern Captain America.

Yeah, that was one of the 3D trailers they had before the movie. And all I'll say is, as much as I wanted to see that movie before, seeing it in 3D has me totally psyched now.

Because while this hyper-realistic Batman interpretation has made for some good films, I'd like to see them follow Marvel's lead and embrace their roots instead of running away from them.

Scored some good sized loquats today. Funny thing is, though, that I have found it to be almost universally true of all loquat trees that those that bear the largest fruit don't have the better flavors.

Some good trees around here, among the older neighborhoods. The new developments eschew fruit trees in favor of palms; not a good trade-off IMO.

How these guys make these huge movies so well just amazes me. A friend gives me his Cinematographers Guild magazines. I read a discourse about mirror splitting vs trying to match lenses for stereo-photography aka 3d. Then ya got the whole 48 frame 60 frame thing going on. The look of movies is changing like when color came out. It will take audiences a year or two to adjust.

I can see where film makers get addicted to the work. Heck my little thriller short PreView is a challenge. This weekend I shoot the most complicated scene I ever tried. 6 people total. And it's already a lot of moving parts. Rental gear like rails and monitor. (Hopefully) two Canon 7D's. A boom and mic with a board to feed audio to my camera. A person with a reflector, a focus puller and a cameraman. Then 2 in the cast. All for what will likely be 30 seconds or so of a three minute film. But it's a ball to do. Really fun.

Surprises me as well. X3 was weaker & the Wolverine movie is like Aliens 3 & 4 (it never happened) but 2 was actually pretty good for a spandex movie. Though nothing will ever top X1 & wolverine's questions on the costumes

As much as it scares me to say this, that remains the best version of Batman in any moving media. The movies & TV shows are nowhere near as good as that cartoon show. I think the most important thing to remember is that Harley Quinn is now a part of the full official continuity. No other TV/Movie only character is.

Heh, that's what I had in mind when I said audiences will have to adjust. Let's remember that was unfinished footage. The new formats will take some time to dial in. They may need to light differently for 48 or 60 fps. We are not used to crisp moving edges onscreen. I noticed a bit of the same weirdness when I first got my HD TV. Sports looked better but a bit weird for a while.

Seriously, though, I'm not putting these movies down at all, I'm very happy we've gotten these stories, but I want them to switch gears. Nolan's universe is a place where half of Batman's own rogue's gallery wouldn't fit, nevermind other DC heroes. It feels more like a dark Mission Impossible than Batman to me at times.

Oh, and the gravelly voice has got to go. I swear, it's like Nolan heard people complain about it and said "Oh yeah? Fuck you, here's Bane!"

OK, I never heard a ukulele that I liked before.

Ukuleles are great for when you get stranded on a deserted Island..
it beats an accordion by far..And if there were only one Tuba player on the Island..That person within weeks would probable meet his fate in a tragic coconut accident.

Excellent article, outlining the reason Occupy can have no good lasting influence. As long as the BB provocateurs are tolerated, Occupy becomes nothing more than a street gang with a higher level of tag lines.

That even ignores the fact that BB itself, the visible part, is sometimes nothing more than a handy way for the police and rw operatives to infiltrate and discredit the entire progressive effort.

Black Bloc is a costume any hero or villain can wear off-the-rack.

And it comes down to voters actually believing that the GOP has any sort of economic plan. I don't think the bad economy will hurt Obama as much as it's hurt other incumbents in the past, because the GOP has been so blatant, so obvious in their obstructionism and their complete lack of desire to help the country improve while Obama is president.

I do think people are tired of politics-by-hostage-taking in the way the GOP is doing. On the other hand, the GOP still is hostage-taking, so people may vote for them to pay the ransom, as it were. Long-term, a bad choice, but I can understand if people do it.

After three days of fraught, behind-the-scenes and emotional calls by Chen from a guarded hospital room, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said progress had been made in granting the activist's wish to take his family abroad.

I think VA is going to be a tough pickup for Romney, OH not so much. Looking at the 2008 results I would bet any state Obama won by ~5% will be toss-ups this time around. If everything remains the same through November, Romney is going to have a tough time but it's definitely do-able.

Wish I had the optimism of the Intrade bettors (60-40). Right now it looks so close to 50-50 that guessing is meaningless.

My theory is based on the idea that Obama won't do quite as well and Romney won't do as bad (as McCain) as they did in '08. I think those assertions are pretty safe bets. How much of a swing that is is really just a big guess but if it's only a 2% swing it puts a lot of states back in play. Not enough for Romney to win, but enough to make it real close.

Unemployment Rate Falls To 8.1 Percent As People Give Up On Looking For Work
[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com...]

While the U.S. unemployment rate in April was the lowest it's been in more than three years, the unemployed may simply be falling off the government's radar.

Unemployment fell to 8.1 percent in April, the lowest since January 2009, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Friday morning. But the decline was mainly due to 342,000 people leaving the labor force, meaning the BLS had stopped counting them as unemployed. The number of employed people in the nation actually fell by 169,000.

The labor-force participation rate -- the percentage of the work-age population either working or looking for work -- dropped to 63.6 percent, the lowest since December 1981.

Colorado Bear Killed After Falling From Tree

BOULDER, Colo. — Authorities say a bear tranquilized on a Colorado campus last week and widely viewed in photos as it fell from a tree has been killed by a car.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials say the black bear was struck on U.S. 36 around dawn Thursday.

Spokeswoman Jennifer Churchill tells the Boulder Daily Camera that officials positively identified the animal as the bear that caused the stir by an ear tag placed on him after the brush with authorities at the University of Colorado.

Images of the 280-pound bear, its arms and legs akimbo as it fell April 26, were widely viewed in newspapers and online.

The Charlotte Observer has rescinded its endorsement of Republican Jim Pendergraph, a leading candidate seeking to replace retiring Rep. Sue Myrick , R-N.C.

Pendergraph, a former Mecklenburg County sheriff, fell out of favor with the newspaper when he sided with Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio, who has investigated the authenticity of Obama's birth certificate.

"I have reason to be suspicious," Pendergraph told the Charlotte newspaper, a few days after he was endorsed by Arpaio. "But I don't know. I haven't seen the facts. I think there's a lot of smoke and generally when there's smoke there's got to be fire somewhere."

Wanna buy the coolest boat on the block? It's going cheap, but you'll never be able to actually use it because the government's asking you to scrap it.

. "Our only disposition option is dismantling and recycling."

Which means if you submit the highest bid, you won't be taking the 118-foot-long, 499-ton Sea Shadow for a three-hour tour with Gilligan and the Skipper.

"The ex-Sea Shadow shall be disposed of by completely dismantling and scrapping within the U.S.A. Dismantling is defined as reducing the property such as it has no value except for its basic material content," read the conditions on the GSA auction site.

That seems to have dampened the interest of evil madmen bent on world domination. (The Sea Shadow is said to be the inspiration for the villain's vessel in the 1997 James Bond film "Tomorrow Never Dies.")

The GSA website reports only 10 bidders so far, with the top bid at $139,100. Bidding started at $10,000.

CA East Bay Rep. Fortney “Pete” Stark, 80, identified Fremont-based Solyndra — perhaps the nation’s most notorious solar energy firm and a lightening rod in the 2012 election — as a car manufacturer in his editorial board meeting this week with the San Francisco Chronicle.

...Asked about his views on new policies regarding Silicon Valley and high tech, including Solyndra, the Congressman said: “I wish I had enough expense allowance to get one of those new “S’s” that Solyndra’s going to make down there, the electric car..my 10 year old (son) is after me. He no longer wants a Porsche. He wants dad to have an “S” sedan,’ Stark said. “They sound wild. They run $60,000-$90,000.”

From the Billboard FAQ on Heartland's site:

2. Why did Heartland choose to feature these people on its billboards?

Because what these murderers and madmen have said differs very little from what spokespersons for the United Nations, journalists for the “mainstream” media, and liberal politicians say about global warming. They are so similar, in fact, that a Web site has a quiz that asks if you can tell the difference between what Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, wrote in his “Manifesto” and what Al Gore wrote in his book, Earth in the Balance.

The point is that believing in global warming is not “mainstream,” smart, or sophisticated. In fact, it is just the opposite of those things. Still believing in man-made global warming – after all the scientific discoveries and revelations that point against this theory – is more than a little nutty. In fact, some really crazy people use it to justify immoral and frightening behavior.

Of course, not all global warming alarmists are murderers or tyrants. But the Climategate scandal and the more recent Fakegate scandal revealed that the leaders of the global warming movement are willing to break the law and the rules of ethics to shut down scientific debate and implement their left-wing agendas.

Scientific, political, and public support for the theory of man-made global warming is collapsing. Most scientists and 60 percent of the general public (in the U.S.) do not believe man-made global warming is a problem. (Keep reading for proof of these statements.) The people who still believe in man-made global warming are mostly on the radical fringe of society. This is why the most prominent advocates of global warming aren’t scientists. They are murderers, tyrants, and madmen.

Wow.

[Link: www.cbssports.com...]

Junior Seau is gone, but his mother is here and heartbroken. There is video of her torment after her son's suicide, and it is devastating to watch -- but please do. Here it is.

As the short video unfolds, Luisa Seau cries and rambles and repeats herself and screams at her dead son and at her living God. She thanks the strangers who have congregated outside Junior Seau's home, where police say he shot himself in the chest Wednesday. Her hands flail in the air, at her chest, at nobody. She is facing the sort of thing a parent should never face, the death of a child, and she is facing it without the least of answers. This wasn't a murder or a car collision or an accidental fall.

Junior Seau did this on purpose. Her son. Killed himself. On purpose.

With a single pull of a trigger, 43-year-old Junior Seau ended his own personal battle -- and started one for those who loved him.

Did you see Luisa Seau's reaction to the news? Have you seen the video? Here it is. Watch it. Have your kids watch it. Have your kids' friends watch it. Let them see what suicide does to the living.

More gruesome news coming out of Syria...

Inside Syria's crackdown: 'I found my boys burning in the street'

Donatella Rovera, Amnesty International's senior crisis adviser, was in Syria for 10 days during the second half of April. Rovera has worked at Amnesty International for 20 years and has extensive experience of working in conflict zones, including Libya, South Sudan, Ivory Coast and Gaza. Here she reports some of the first-hand accounts of the brutal crackdown by the Syrian regime against its people.

"Soldiers came to our home and took my son. Later, as I was peering out of the window I saw soldiers line up eight young men standing facing the wall with their hands tied at the back and shoot them. Then they put the bodies in the back of a pick-up truck and left. I don't know if the men were all dead or injured. At that point I did not know that one of the men was my son. His body was found with other bodies at a school not too far from our home."

A relative of another man, who was also killed that day told me: "Members of the military security came to the house of our relatives, where we were staying and asked for our ID and did not find any problem; we were not wanted. Then one of the soldiers looked at my relative's cell phone and found a pro-revolution song. They took him outside … A neighbour told me the soldiers had shot him and then taken him to a nearby house; I went there and found him injured. He had been shot in the ear and neck but was still breathing. Some neighbours helped to carry him to the car and three of them took him to a field hospital (normal hospitals have long been out of bounds to people injured by the army/security forces) but on the way there they were stopped by soldiers and were killed. Their bodies were later found at a school, except the body of my relative who had been taken back to the house where he had previously been left for dead. They had finished him off with an additional shot to the head."

The horror stories coming out of there are hard to believe.

Rutgers University is being considered for a merger/reorganization by Gov. Christie, but the school's problems are more basic. Students have to pay $1,000 in mandatory fees to prop up the athletic program - more than any other school and once again highlights whether schools should be focusing on athletics at a time when costs are sapping academics.

College athletics is used to perpetuate a military sub-culture. More or less. But that plays a strong part in the emphasis by of athletics in education by the government. They want strong soldiers and officers.

re: #238 Gus

Rutgers is an odd case. It had a middling athletic program until Greg Schiano came in and turned around the football program. They did well for a few years - they spent tons on the football program, built/expanded the stadium, and then had a single down year where the team sucked, and the revenues dropped. The team rebounded, but now Schiano's coaching in the NFL.

No idea if the team will be good going forward, but the costs are going to be borne by students who can ill-afford the costs at the state school regardless.

Schiano and the rest of the folks who set the school on this trajectory aren't there to be held accountable.

Primer White. One room is pinkish (was a girl's bedroom) and the other is blue (was a boy's bedroom) from when we bought the house...last year. Finally at a point where we're ready to start decorating it to our tastes...wanted to settle in first before starting projects and get used to it. So I'm putting a base coat on the two smaller bedrooms which will make it easier for my wife to pick colors as she'll hate the stark white look.

Those that set the school on that trajectory aren't the football coach/ athletic director(s)

They are the board of regents, the president/ chancellor/ dean(s) of the universitys. They bring IN the (high profile) football coaches to get then to that level, but the decision isn't made at the coaching level

I thought the whole excuse for why schools invested so much time, energy, and money in their athletics programs was that they were supposed to revenue generators (Or, at least, the big ones like football/basketball)? If students are being forced to pay large fees to keep the football program afloat, that flies in the face of that entire line of reasoning.

Is that over the four years, or per year?

That's nearly a quarter of what my school charges for tuition for the entire year.

We've been making plans (the wife has already picked the colors) but I'm going to surprise her and do it while I have time. What she doesn't know is I'm going to tear out part of a load bearing wall and install a bar between the kitchen and dining room. Plus, I have a new dishwasher and stove stashed at the shop just waiting to be put in. I'm going for serious brownie points here.

They're revenue producers until they're not!

Rutgers was never one that was, but they decided to give Division 1 football a try and brought in Schiano (et al) to try to get them there. As LawHawk stated, a down year brought down attendance/ revenue/ TV money. Someplace like Duke, a perennial basketball powerhouse can withstand "A" down year. The networks will still schedule them as a drawer and their attendance won't dwindle

Zoo keeper licks constipated monkey's bum for an HOUR to dislodge peanut

A zoo keeper went above and beyond the call of duty after licking a constipated monkey's bum for an hour.

Zhang Bangsheng stepped up for the gruesome task when the cute Francois' leaf monkey ate a peanut which was too big to pass through its digestive system.

As three-month-old animal was too small for medication, the 50-year-old keeper, who works at Wuhan Zoo in China, set to work.

He first washed the monkey's bum, then he licked it with his tongue for 60 minutes.

After an hour had passed, the monkey finally passed the peanut through its pooper.

Zhang said he "laughed with satisfaction" when the nut finally materialised.

I don't know, maybe it's just me but I think a soft wet cloth would have done the trick.

Hitler was a coke head?

Medical reports show Adolf Hitler used cocaine, suffered extreme flatulence

Adolf Hitler was apparently a coke head, doped up on 28 medications while suffering from “uncontrollable flatulence.”

It’s a whole other side to the Nazi dictator, whose condition was revealed in medical documents now up for grabs online from Alexander Historical Auctions of Stamford, Conn. Bidding for the papers, which include X-ray copies of Hitler’s skull and sketches of the inside of his nose, ends Tuesday and Wednesday.

The U.S. military commissioned the medical reports provided by Hitler’s personal doctors, said Bill Panagopulos, president of Alexander Autographs.

Among the more surprising notes, he said, was that the “Mein Kampf” madman used powdered cocaine extensively to soothe his sinuses and throat, and was also prone to passing gas.

Hitler was treated with pills containing strychnine, a poison, “which probably explains his stomach pains,” Panagopulos told the Daily News.

Hitler also used chamomile plants as a “cleansing enema,” the reports said.

And when it came to revving up his libido, he was injected with “extracts” from young bull testicles, as noted by Dr. Theodore Morrell.

You really never know what's going to happen until you start to tear it out. The wall portion I'm taking out is the door section on the old outer wall (they added a big kitchen and bedroom right before I bought the house) so I know how it should look under the drywall but there's no guarantees. Here's the full statement:

As long as the Nets are allowing Jay-Z to call their marketing shots — what a shock that he chose black and white as the new team colors to stress, as the Nets explained, their new “urban” home — why not have him apply the full Jay-Z treatment? Why the Brooklyn Nets when they can be the New York N——s? The cheerleaders could be the Brooklyn B—-hes or Hoes. Team logo? A 9 mm with hollow-tip shell casings strewn beneath. Wanna be Jay-Z hip? Then go all the way!

If I was this guys editor, not only would I not allow this stuff to be printed, I'd quickly show him the door and tell him to not bother coming back.

I heard about that that. It sucks. I hate and let me emphasize hate the New York Yankees but Mariano Rivera is the best closer ever and he's done it while being all business and no silly melodrama. As a former Little League closer, I respect the guy immensely. He's also the last to wear number 42 as MLB retired Jackie Robinson's number league round in 1997 but allowed for people who had it at the time to keep wearing it. What's crazy is his last game may have been pitched against my Orioles and I saw his last live at the old stadium in 2008.
