Heartland Institute Jumps the Shark

Just when you thought the right couldn’t sink any lower, they prove you wrong!
Environment • Views: 29,986

The Right discovers an all new level of nutso creepiness: a new billboard campaign paid for by the Heartland Institute compares climate scientists to terrorists and mass murderers.

No, I’m not making this up.

They think this is an effective way to address the issue of global warming with the American public. I deeply hope that they are wrong.

In Heartland’s own words:

“Why did Heartland choose to feature these people on its billboards? Because what these murderers and madmen have said differs very little from what spokespersons for the United Nations, journalists for the “mainstream” media, and liberal politicians say about global warming. The point is that believing in global warming is not “mainstream,” smart, or sophisticated. In fact, it is just the opposite of those things. Still believing in man-made global warming – after all the scientific discoveries and revelations that point against this theory – is more than a little nutty. In fact, some really crazy people use it to justify immoral and frightening behavior.”

Oh, and future billboards are slated to include Charles Manson, Osama bin Laden, and Fidel Castro.

So take that, Earth's ecosystem! How dare you react to carbon emissions in a way that scientists both predicted and have confirmed?! Please henceforth behave as the Koch brothers tell you to.

On the subject of dealing with two ideas of what the facts are --the disturbing lack of understanding of empirical science is evident:

Why Conservatives Believe in Anti-Gay Pseudo-Science

The anti-gay-rights movement's claims about homosexuality are based on the worst kind of junk "science."

On May 8, North Carolinians will vote on a constitutional amendment that defines a marriage between a man and a woman as the “only domestic legal union” the state will recognize -- thereby barring LGBT marriage equality. The amendment would also ban civil unions, and end domestic partner benefits, like prescription drug and health care coverage, for the partners and children of public employees. At its deepest level, this issue is about fairness for everyone under the law. But less mentioned is that it is also about science, and what’s factually true.

RETAIL REPORT: Michigan crop freeze forces Cherry Republic to order millions of cherries from Poland

Don’t be surprised to see the Polish flag hanging in Michigan’s four Cherry Republic stores this year.

The Michigan-based retailer — which has stores in Glen Arbor, Traverse City, Charlevoix and Ann Arbor — is one of many businesses in the state dealing with the effects of unusually warm weather in March followed by multiple spring freezes

With the majority of Michigan’s expansive cherry crop destroyed by this weather, Cherry Republic President Bob Sutherland said he was forced to think outside the box in order to continue selling his variety of cherry products.
His solution: Ordering millions of cherries from the Lublin region in Poland.
“We needed to be proactive,” Sutherland explained. “So I ordered 150,000 pounds (of cherries) from Poland so far and got the last of what they had in storage.”

In a typical year, Michigan supplies 70 to 80 percent of the country’s cherry supply with the roughly 2 million cherry trees that are spread across northern Michigan. Cherries are harvested, pitted and flash frozen, and then they can be dried or used in other products, such as pies and jams.

Sutherland said the price of a 1-pound bag of dried cherries will jump from $12.95 to $18.95.

Newspaper Rescinds Endorsement After GOP Candidate Goes Birther: ‘He Has Done Nothing But Embarrass Us’

The Observer, which originally praised Pendergraph as “conservative” was not pleased, publishing a scathing retraction of its support today for the North Carolina candidate:

After winning the Observer’s endorsement in his bid for Congress, he has done nothing but embarrass us and himself.

By buddying up to one of America’s more hateful egomaniacs and then joining with fringe “birthers” to question President Obama’s citizenship, Pendergraph has contradicted much of what he told the Observer’s editorial board in his endorsement interview last month. As a result, we have lost faith in him, and urge voters to consider Edwin Peacock or Ric Killian in the 9th Congressional District race.

Ted Nugent gets upset at reporter who questions his status as a "moderate"

Nugent bristled at the suggestion that he isn't the kind of moderate Romney will likely need support from to win the general election.

"Call me," Nugent continued in a raised, irritated voice, "when you meet someone who does that more than I do. Because that's really moderate. In fact, you know what that is? That's extreme. ... I'm an extremely loving, passionate man, and people who investigate me honestly, without the baggage of political correctness, ascertain the conclusion that I'm a damned nice guy. ... Glor told CBS hosts Charlie Rose and Erica Hill that Nugent later offered a “full apology” for his outburst.

Because some citizens are more equal than others.

What's the supposed reasoning behind that? "Gee, if voters don't think this small minority group should have protections, that clearly indicates that there really is no need to protect that group"? Conversely, if a majority thinks a group should have protections, is that somehow supposed to indicate a broad need to protect them? I guess we should get used to discrimination against straight white Christians becoming the only thing covered by civil rights laws.

Extremists React to Neo-Nazi’s Apparent Mass Murder, Suicide

Nativist extremists and white supremacists wasted little time responding with half-cocked conspiracy theories to the news that J.T. Ready, a neo-Nazi border vigilante, had died in an apparent murder-suicide outside Phoenix. For some, the blame lay with Mexican drug cartels. For others, it was the Zionist Occupied Government, or ZOG, once again silencing a critic.

“Until the bullets are extracted and analyzed, the authorities will not know if one person or multiple persons shot the victims! But I know you La Raza Commie Weenies will spin it just as JT did it. I’ll be on this like white on rice. I will make sure the truth comes out,” Layne Lawless, a prominent Arizona nativist, wrote on Facebook.

Others on Stormfront, a largely anonymous white supremacist web forum, took the conspiracy a step further. “They took him out. It’s that simple,” someone named Valkator wrote. As of Thursday, the site had 15 pages of comments related to Ready’s death the night before. (Conspicuously absent from the forum were the posts Ready himself left in recent months. Those appear to have been scrubbed.)

A similar thread appeared on Vanguard News Network, a racist website run by neo-Nazi Alex Linder, with some worrying about Ready’s legacy as a “loose cannon [sic] in the anti-immigration movement.”

“We don’t need another black eye in White Nationalism after we have five convicted pipe bombers in Federal prison,” one post read.

In general, the reaction to Ready’s death seemed to play on a few expected narratives: that Ready was killed by drug smugglers; that Jews running the federal government had come calling; even that Ready was acting in self-defense when he was killed. Whatever the flavor of conspiracy, it’s not surprising that Ready’s death should garner such a response. He was a darling of the movement – a well-spoken and husky presence on the border, almost always armed as if he were going to war.

Going back on topic: is there a reliable resource or resources I can hit that lays out the evidence for global warming/climate change? I don't want to get into one of these arguments and not have evidence and refs to back myself up.

Keep in mind all the facts in the world won't change the mind of a deranged member of the conservative hate-cult. Rebut the denier arguments, but with an eye to capturing low-info "lurkers" who happen to be reading the conversation - they're the minds you can change, not the hard-core deniers.

From Skeptical Science, The Debunking Handbook gives you great tips on how to combat climate myths without unintentionally reinforcing them. It also tells you how to frame your argument to make it more effective with certain conservatives who would otherwise ignore you.

Mitt claims he wanted Grenell to stay after shutting him down on the job

Romney was also asked about Grenell, who is openly gay, thanking him in his resignation letter for believing in him.

"We wanted him to stay with the team," Romney said. "We select people not based on their ethnicity or their gender, but upon their capability. He was a capable individual and we're sorry to have him go."

EXPOSED: Romney Campaign Silenced Gay Spokesman To Avoid Confronting Hate Groups, Misled Reporters

As Andrew Sullivan reported last night and the New York Times later confirmed, Grenell helped organize a Romney campaign conference call to pre-empt Vice President Joe Biden’s foreign policy speech last week. Sullivan reported that after Grenell’s voice was not heard on the April 26 call, which he’d helped set up, people started to ask questions:

Some even called and questioned him afterwards as to why he was absent. He wasn’t absent. He was simply muzzled. For a job where you are supposed to maintain good relations with reporters, being silenced on a key conference call on your area of expertise is pretty damaging. Especially when you helped set it up.

Sources close to Grenell say that he was specifically told by those high up in the Romney campaign to stay silent on the call, even while he was on it. And this was not the only time he had been instructed to shut up.

The Times added information to Sullivan’s story, also noting that the call was the “biggest moment yet for Mitt Romney’s foreign policy team”:

It turned out [Grenell] was at home in Los Angeles, listening in, but stone silent and seething. A few minutes earlier, a senior Romney aide had delivered an unexpected directive, according to several people involved in the call.

“Ric,” said Alex Wong, a policy aide, “the campaign has requested that you not speak on this call.” Mr. Wong added, “It’s best to lay low for now.”

re: #73 Simply Sarah

What's the supposed reasoning behind that? "Gee, if voters don't think this small minority group should have protections, that clearly indicates that there really is no need to protect that group"? Conversely, if a majority thinks a group should have protections, is that somehow supposed to indicate a broad need to protect them? I guess we should get used to discrimination against straight white Christians becoming the only thing covered by civil rights laws.

I've mentioned my interpretation of Christie's mindset before. He wants to run for POTUS, but as a Republican, he can't be seen as being pro gay rights. So his best option is to throw out to the public.

If the public says okay, then he gets to say "Sorry, GOP, the voters have spoken. I did what I could."

If the public says no, then he comes off as a conservative hero, beating back the blasphemous gay horde.

I'd be willing to bet good money this is what Romney is basing his proposal on.

Unless it's followed by emergency surgery and an apology...

I'm having a hard time believing him. He's been acting this way in interviews for 40 years and now all of sudden he's apologizing because an illness was making him cranky?

Which leads to the next question: if he didn't have the stone, he would have calmly reacted to a very hard questions from a reporter? Bit of a stretch.

re: #69 mattand

This is kind of the shit that Christie is pushing here in NJ: let voters decide whether a minority (and an unpopular one with many of them) gets to have the same rights as everyone else.

Because some citizens are more equal than others.

Thanks for the responses and resources. I realize it's a tilting-at-windmills scenario depending on who (whom?) you're talking to. At worst, I want to know I was able to back up my assertions with evidence.

Lou Engle Calls for Religious Right to Channel Confederate Generals to 'Restrain' the 'Homosexual Agenda'

During his speech at the Christian Broadcasting Network’s “Week of Prayer” yesterday, Lou Engle asked for support of his upcoming The Call: Virginia prayer rally, saying that Virginia should fight back against Washington D.C., just as Confederate generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson did during the Civil War. General Lee “had an anointing or something,” Engle said, “he was able to restrain Washington, he took his stand and held back those force.” Engle also pointed to Stonewall Jackson for “rallying the Virginians” against the Union as a model to fight the “homosexual agenda” and the demonic “principalities and powers” behind homosexuality. Engle said, “Raise up a stonewall to restrain the agenda that is coming out of D.C.”

Note to Lou: They lost in the end.

As for Heartland Institute, another small detail, they are a charitable organization that has 501(c)(3) status, so US taxpayers subsidize their operations by providing tax relief to those who contribute to their anti-science cause.

These people are as arrogant as they are ignorant. When I wrote to them a few months back questioning their tax exempt status, I got a smartass reply from Diane Bast, the wife of Heartland's chief. She made a cheap shot insult at my cognitive skills because the word "teacher" appears in my email address. That she was so openly insulting of teachers speaks volumes about their initiative to promote anti-science climate denial in public schools.

Pathteacher: Heartland Institute. More lobbyists with tax exempt status
