Alabama Beating Not a Hate Crime, Had Nothing to Do With Trayvon Martin

Almost missed this one; remember when the entire right wing blogosphere went into a race-baiting frenzy over a story from Alabama, in which a white man was beaten by a group of African Americans who, according to the wingnuts, said it was “justice for Trayvon Martin?”

Well, the story was bogus. According to the police, this was an “ongoing dispute with neighbors,” and had nothing to do with Trayvon Martin at all: Terry Rawls Arrested and Charged With Matthew Owens Beating.

Cops in Mobile, Ala. made their first arrest in the apparent mob beating of Matthew Owens: Terry Rawls surrendered Wednesday on assault charges.

In less than a week, the brutal attack on Owens — which left him in critical condition — went from being described as a hate crime connected to the Trayvon Martin killing in Florida to an ongoing feud between neighbors, WKRG reported.

“This here is an ongoing dispute with neighbors, that’s what this is,” Mobile Police Corporal Chris Levy told the station. …

Cops said on Wednesday that they expect to arrest three more suspects involved in the fight, but added that the so-called “mob” consisted mostly of bystanders, WKRG reported.

“What we know is that Mr. Owens was fussing at some kids about playing basketball in the street,” said Levy. “These kids then went back and told their parents about the exchange they had with Mr. Owens.”

The adults “were having a get together down the street, [and] came down to where Mr. Owens is, and there was a series of racial slurs exchanged, and there was a fight,” said Levy.

He ruled out that it was a hate crime and said that the Trayvon Martin shooting wasn’t a motivating factor, according to media reports.

Obviously, the police are in on The Conspiracy. This is yet more evidence of the deep and pervasive nature of the efforts to give black people a leg up over the oppressed white people.

Its a well known fact that the cops in Alabama are in the pocket of the Obama DoJ.

It's really pathetic how credulous people are of the claims that black people are going around beating up whites in response to the Travyon Martin case. It can happen, sure, but why on earth do they swallow it every time it crops up?

I guess it fits into a pre-conceived narrative, a pretty ugly one.

I see this story is not correcting much of the white-victimhood industry - but I don't expect it to.

What can one say of the increasingly isolated, and putrid, right-wing hate industry in this country? Even today Townhall is running a defense of Geert Wilders : Marked For Death: Living a Life as a Marked Man

To make a generalization of this, it would be useful to look at the racial makeup of police forces here in Alabama and throughout the South. Our town and county, as well as the state police, are visibly very balanced. That is the difference between organized racist assholes now and those of 50 years ago. The KKK organizations cannot rely on police and court collusion. If there is to be any Jim Crow resurgence, that would have to be reversed.

If you want to study a bit, look nationwide at the make-up of quasi-police forces--the auxilliary/reserve/volunteer/second-string deputy groups. And the Oathkeepers.

The article says he was beaten with brass knuckles, a lead pipe and paint cans. I know when I have get togethers down the street, those things are usually hanging around. Both sides of the story seem "legit" to me.....

Um, not so much. Brass knuckles, lead pipe, and paint cans? Intent to kill more likely. Still don't understand the hate crime nonsense - it's a crime or it isn't.

Bedbug sleeper.

re: #7 Kingpest

What both sides? What are you talking about? how do the weapons relate to whether or not this was 'inspired' by the Martin case?

11 Kingpest  Fri, May 4, 2012 1:42:25pm

Well, I guess my thinking on it is this.

According to the story someone stated, "Now that's justice for Trayvon" after administering the beating. And this got the right wing nuts in a huff>

Then this article at the Huffington post plays the story like some people in the neighborhood were just hanging out, and actually implies the dude deserved the beating since the police had been called prior and it was the beaten dude that instigated the fights.

The bottom line, to me, is this is a horrible story involving pretty horrible people, and the Huffington post is just as guilty of politicizing the story as the right wing nut jobs.

That's the "both" sides I see.

Maybe I'm wrong. But I think the story linked is skewed itself.

I don't get that from the story at all. What in the story makes you think they're saying that the dude deserved the beating?

What does "bedbug sleeper" mean?

14 Kingpest  Fri, May 4, 2012 1:55:31pm

I don't see any other intent of that particular paragraph stating they took no action because Owen's started the fights. A neutral article would have stated that the police had been called prior and ended it at that. Since no action was taken, no verdict can be made. So what other purpose does the writer intend with that line?

WHat the fuck? They're quoting a police officer, and you have a problem with that?

Levy said that officers have been called to break up fights between Rawls and Owens before, but never filed charges because Owens instigated them.

That's the police officer saying that. It's a fact that they reported on. Why does that bug you?

16 Kingpest  Fri, May 4, 2012 2:17:37pm

It doesn't bug me in the least. The thing that stood out to me, was an article that stated the parents were having a "get together" down the street, and just happened to have a pipe, brass knuckles, and paint cans to beat a man to near death.

I think the author played down the awfulness of the people administering the beating in reaction to the right wingnuts making hay out of a comment made at the scene.

I think the article is politically motivated, plain and simple.

That's all I'm saying.

Unrelated, but I googled "bedbug Sleeper" and got nothing.

They called it a "brutal attack" that "left him in critical condition." How is that downplaying it?

Well, they sound like assholes. I mean, they nearly beat a man to death. If they were at someone's house, then having those handy doesn't really seem that odd to me.

vI think the author played down the awfulness of the people administering the beating in reaction to the right wingnuts making hay out of a comment made at the scene.

Because they were having a get-together? You appear to be reading a lot into this.

re: #14 Kingpest

Well, this isn't the first article which has stated that Owens instigated the first fight. Where did that information come from? And, if it's true, why wasn't Owens arrested at that time?

Maybe Kingpest thinks they "downplayed" it because they quoted the police saying that Owens wasn't beaten up by 20 people. Judging by some of the comments on the Huffingtonpost article, the anti-black right is reluctant to let go of the "fact" that he was beaten by a mob of 20 black people.
