The word "silence" seems to be incorrect. From your link:
By his own account, Spocko worked quietly, deliberately, and pretty much in isolation. He established contact with the advertising departments of corporations, linking audio of offensive commentary in his messages. He researched their corporate statement of values, and asked them to consider offensive content in light of those values. When a controversial radio personality voiced a company's ads, Spocko observed that this person was also the voice of the company. Spocko emphasized that withdrawing advertising support for a show didn't limit a host's free speech, it was simply ceasing to support offensive content with advertising dollars. He would summarize, "You can choose to advertise elsewhere. This is really about YOU. Do YOU want to be associated with these comments? Do you want your company and brand to be associated with these comments?"
Emphasis added.

You have a problem with this?
"The advertisers, in a lot of cases, don't know this is going on," said Spocko. "They hear it, and they can choose to say, 'Well, that really doesn't reflect our corporate brand.' "
It worked.
He's simply providing the advertisers with a service, the opportunity to listen to what they've been sponsoring.

23 | wrenchwench Sat, May 5, 2012 7:33:52pm |
It was a long, eventful week, just ended. But the weird customer of the week award goes to a woman who was in on Tuesday morning. She was a large woman, resembling a fertility icon, except for the tattoos and the (male) Marine-type haircut. She told me a lot about herself, along the lines of having been kidnapped by Walt Disney as an infant and raised by strangers, having been beat up the night before and woke up in a ditch, and so on. She bought a bracelet (I don't usually sell jewelry, but we have some stuff on consignment for a friend) and when I put it on her wrist, she said "We're now married in the Wiccan church."
That afternoon, she came back and told me the bracelet had fallen off and she lost it. She said, "Someone must have needed it more than I did." All I could think was "Thank Goddess!"

I think libertarianism is a marketing ploy, a rebranding.
Its adherents claim otherwise but since its central tenet, or so it seems to me, is, "When all forms of illegitimate authority vanish, and all of them are illegitimate, the world will be wonderful forever," shows they are anarchists.
Why the rebranding?
Well, giving it a new name cuts them off from history. Anarchy has a bad rep. So libertarians don't carry the weight of anarchy's past.
The other reason is that it sets the debate in favour of the libertarians before it even starts. Since liberty is the root word to argue against libertarianism is to argue against liberty itself. It's a rhetorical trick, but effective.
One of the best things I read recently was a conservative critique of libertarianism, Marxism of the Right. Although I disagree with some of his statements it's an excellent deconstruction of libertarianism.

Presidents have been using teleprompters for decades now. If not those they also have built in teleprompters for the podium or just simply using a printed copy of a speech.

Republicans love the teleprompter meme because it's perfectly Rovian, paint the opposition with one's own flaws. If the problem is that Republican candidates are all conversationally inept and uninspiring then there must be some other way of explaining why Obama keeps knocking speeches out of the park. They ignore the fact that he's written many of his own speeches and delivered many without a teleprompter because their audience is desperately hungry for a reason to dismiss this glaring gap in execution. Obama makes it look easy because for him it is, regardless of the format. So while Bush looked like a happy yokel, McCain an old fool, Palin an idiotic airhead and Romney an awkward android - Obama just looks cool, comfortable and connected, like someone who not only "gets it" but is enjoying himself at the same time.

What does Mitt Stand for again?
It seemed like it was 'his turn' and he seemed electable. My problem with him has become that he stands for nothing but a desire to be president. In that regard, he's worse than Gingrich, and worse than Obama as well. Both Barack and Newt want to be president because they have things they want to do and they need the presidency to enact them. Romney seems to just want to be president.
It's be nice if you at least actually acknowledged having said these things, and not all that long ago.
His use of footage of Obama wasn't quite as bad as what Grayson did, but it was very bad in my eyes. It'll prevent me from voting for Romney in the primary, since I don't support that sort of dishonesty. Mitt seems to have his eyes too closely focused on the prize, to the exclusion of principles and honesty.
It's fairly difficult at this point to understand what either of you really stand for, except perhaps momentary expedience.

Speaking of crazy theocrats and feet of clay, a well known fundamentalist Reformed organization, Ligonier Ministries, headed by R.C. Sproul, had a conference recently called The Christian Mind, with such invited luminaries as Stephen "The Cell is Too Hard For Me" Meyer, Mullah Al Mohler, and Del "The Delusional" Tackett.
And yes, they recorded the major sessions for all of us to enjoy.
For example, on the second day of questions they take up the age of the universe, at 42 minutes into this video:
[Link: www.ligonier.org...]
In the first day of questions, among other sticky questions, they tackle whether it is a sin for a Christian to vote for a Mormon or a Catholic, starts at 28:48:
[Link: www.ligonier.org...]
If you feel you just have too many brain cells you can watch those videos and take care of the problem. But take heart, the speakers aren't using teleprompters.

My answer was, "So What?"
As this person has a relative or two who is LGBT and is totally supportive of them because they are good people, the concept was totally a conflict in their mind.
IMHO, teenagers experiment with sex regardless of anything we teach or don't teach. The only difference is whether or not they take away a sense of guilt and shame because of what is taught or not taught.
Those emotions are far more damaging than the experimentation itself.

re: #198 ggt
So, I was talking with a "trying very hard to stay current" conservative. A person having a very difficult time with it all. Anyway, we were talking about LGBT topics and the biggest issue is that that person is afraid teenagers will experiment with the "lifestyle.".
Come on, you know better! Experimentation is wrong unless done in the proper place: college!

I've heard that . . .

A lot of kids don't realize that.

Another thing I've noticed about right-leaning men is that they have a hard time taking words at face value.

Everything is considered a challenge or attempt at dominance.

In terms of women's health, douching - contrary to the "oh so fresh feeling" marketing malarkey - is completely unnecessary, destroying the vagina's natural, healthy pH balance and leaving women more vulnerable to infections.

You made some stupid comments earlier during your sudden inspiration for trolling this afternoon. I noticed those and ignored them since I really didn't care. Then you came back -- not willing to count your losses -- and stuck your foot in your mouth with your belly aching and that "Beloved Leader" troll bait. You're continuing this behavior leads me only to believe that your acting similarly to what is colloquially called a douche bag interjected with the occasional troll bait.

If you make a stupid joke or something, know when to cut your losses, don't keep goddamned perseverating trying to hammer home your bullshit, unwelcome stupid opinion. People differ here, if for whatever reason you find yourself unable sell your point of view with a modicum of skill or talent then the answer isn't to keep whining about it over and over again, the answer is to shut the fuck up and then go talk to someone who demonstrably gives a shit.

The problem is with the way you choose to express things. Snide, condescending, passive-aggressive one-liners coupled with a "you're too stupid to understand my rhetorical brilliance" attitude won't be received well under any circumstances.
And it's ironic you would complain about your so-called "innocent" comments being interpreted negatively when you did an exponential version of that very thing to Charles (i.e. assuming his adjustments to the Paging system were a nefarious plot to suppress your submissions - many of which were Featured, and updinged by others here, myself included.)

Ben Stiller film renamed due to Trayvon Martin shooting
A Ben Stiller comedy has been given a new title to avoid it being linked to the controversial shooting of an unarmed teenager in Florida.
Neighborhood Watch had already had promotional material pulled following the death of Trayvon Martin, who was killed by a Neighborhood Watch volunteer.
The film, which also stars Vince Vaughn, will now be called The Watch.

Also, early this morning something weird happened in Peru:
Hundreds of dolphins and more than 1,000 birds, mostly pelicans, die on the coast in the north of Peru.
Peru's Government has taken an extremely rational and good course of action. I am dead serious on saying this:
The government of Peru has warned people to stay off beaches along large stretches of its coastline as it investigates the mysterious deaths of hundreds of dolphins and seabirds.

Can't leave Afghanistan yet. We've got a timetable and we have to follow it or we'll look worse. Also Karzai wants us to stay through the next presidential election there, one he cannot run in. And I think that a reasonable request, to make sure their new president has time to get into office before we leave.

I'm getting rather ticked at Algeria though. They are bullying Morocco, supporting radicals who have now infect the entire Northeastern 30-40% of Africa, and assisted Qaddafi last year.
Just for the Morocco thing alone, I want to swat them. And I won't lump the people into this. The Algerians are under a nasty China/Russia supported dictatorship. They can't do squat.
Unlike the Serbians or Greeks. Who still support ethnic cleansing and genocide, as shown by the results of their elections.

One of my best friends from high school is gay, and married to her partner thanks to the Democratic gov of WA. If she were in a GOPer state, not only would her marriage be impossible, but she would be forbidden from visiting her wife in the hospital*. Ultimately, yes. Taming the state of Wisconsin's finances and getting the economy moving in the right direction are far more important than hospital visit for a small minority.
The small minority isn't nothing, you understand, and if it was something on the level of active persecution I'd have a different view. But that isn't what this is, so the larger issues must be paramount.

Judge upholds Wisconsin domestic partnership law
[Link: host.madison.com...]
In a 53-page decision, Circuit Court Judge Daniel Moeser said the registry, which went into effect Aug. 1, 2009, does not violate the Marriage Amendment to the state's Constitution passed in 2006.
The Wisconsin Family Action plans on appealing but....
Attorneys who defended former Gov. Jim Doyle and other parties in the lawsuit, however, said Moeser made it clear in his ruling that it was not a close call.
So there's that.

Laise-Fairre, DF--really?
The financial regulations that were put in place to prevent another great depression were systematically broken down for the last 30 years -- Dodd-Frank was an attempt to correct that as well as to reign-in the Shadow Banking System.
The idea that there is too much regulation is a LIE told by the Wall Street Types to hold the rest of us hostage. They won't let their money out into the market right now, using the "strong regulation and of tax laws" as an excuse.

DF - two thoughts.
1) Scooter came into office with a small surplus. A surplus. His deficits were created by his give aways to those who had him elected. Then he said we had to gut the state to pay for his friends gifts. The tax payers are being abused by his pay for play corruption that makes what Tommy Thompson used to do look like the most honest politician in history.
2) The TP/GOP is actively persecuting women and LGBT. They are doing things to explicitly make their lives worse. They are explicitly telling big chunks of people that they are scum who should be dead because they aren't PC enough for the TP/GOP.

Then Boehner and Cantor complained that Obama had blindsided them, forcing his way into the retreat (they'd invited him, and bragged for days ahead of time about the smackdown they were sure they'd be sending his way).

Stephen King: Tax Me, for F@%&’s Sake!
And the meme will start:
In February, while discussing New Jersey's newly amended income-tax law, which allows the rich to pay less (proportionally) than the middle class, Christie was asked about Warren Buffett's observation that he paid less federal income taxes than his personal secretary, and that wasn't fair. "He should just write a check and shut up," Christie responded, with his typical verve. "I'm tired of hearing about it. If he wants to give the government more money, he's got the ability to write a check -- go ahead and write it."
Nothing like petty antagonism to respond to a point. This is the same irrational response as:
You're for war? Why don't you volunteer?
You believe in global warming? Why don't you quit driving cars?
This will likely be the response of the GOP and the wingtards: 'If you want to pay more have at it and wright the check.' It's not meant to continue a discussion, it's meant to end one.

Chicago parking meter company wants more money; mayor balks
The private investors who run Chicago’s parking meters are doing better than expected, and now they’re demanding an additional $14 million they say they’re owed under obscure provisions of the wildly unpopular 2008 deal that privatized metered parking and caused rates to soar, records show.
...
Partnerships assembled by New York-based financial giant Morgan Stanley hold a 50.1 percent stake in Chicago Parking Meters. The rest of the company is owned by German financial company Allianz and the investment arms of the emirate of Abu Dhabi.

For $1.15 billion, paid upfront, the City Council approved a plan championed by then-Mayor Richard M. Daley in 2008 that privatized Chicago’s 36,000 meters for 75 years. In a deal that was widely criticized for selling taxpayers short, Chicago Parking Meters was given the right to keep all meter revenues until 2084. Drivers have since seen sharp increases in parking rates under the deal.
After leaving office a year ago, Daley, along with his former corporation counsel and two top press aides, went to work for Katten Muchin Rosenmann LLP, the law firm that handled the parking meter deal for the city

Turns out that the Republican's gay problem isn't the result of the Bryan Fischers of this world. Neither is it completely the result of the theocrats. It's far more mainstream within the Republican establishment. No amount of spin from the slimy Karl Rove or Donald Rumsfeld will change that.

Arizona bans funding of Planned Parenthood
(CNN) -- Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has signed off on a bill that will prevent abortion providers like Planned Parenthood from receiving public funds in most cases, her office said.
"This is a common sense law that tightens existing state regulations and closes loopholes in order to ensure that taxpayer dollars are not used to fund abortions, whether directly or indirectly," the governor said in a statement.
"By signing this measure into law, I stand with the majority of Americans who oppose the use of taxpayer funds for abortion," Brewer said.
Kansas, North Carolina and Texas have enacted similar legislation, while Indiana, New Jersey and Wisconsin have used their budget processes to bar funding for abortion providers, according to her office...

Family feud reveals luxuries at largest Christian TV network
Granddaughter attacks founders, who accuse her of embezzlement
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — For 39 years, the Trinity Broadcasting Network has urged viewers to give generously and reap the Lord’s bounty in return.
The prosperity gospel preached by Paul and Janice Crouch, who built a single station into the world’s largest Christian television network, has worked out well for them.
Mr. and Mrs. Crouch have his-and-her mansions one street apart in a gated community here, provided by the network using viewer donations and tax-free earnings. But Mrs. Crouch, 74, rarely sleeps in the $5.6 million house with tennis court and pool. She mostly lives in a large company house near Orlando, Fla., where she runs a side business, the Holy Land Experience theme park. Mr. Crouch, 78, has an adjacent home there too, but rarely visits. Its occupant is often a security guard who doubles as Mrs. Crouch’s chauffeur.
The twin sets of luxury homes only hint at the high living enjoyed by the Crouches, inspirational television personalities whose multitudes of stations and satellite signals reach millions of worshipers across the globe. Almost since they started in the 1970s, the couple have been criticized for secrecy about their use of donations, which totaled $93 million in 2010...

In DF's 'defence', it's not really about the money. From what I see, Scott Walker's term isn't fiscally responsible either. What matters to him is that Democrats lose and Republicans win, and thus he supports Scott Walker because he wants to bust unions that generally support Democrats.

This is why I totally reject the statistics that claim that the religious give more to charity than the non-religious. Most of that giving is to their churches in tithes and other donations that I do not consider charity at all but scams run by these grifters for their own enrichment. Building a mega church is not charity. Donating to provide programs and services for one's self and/or family is paying for a hobby, not a charity. That is is all tax deductible is just... wrong.

Every visible screw (all of which I removed) does nothing to open the machine. the only two screws to open it are hidden in secret panels. I had never had a fridge with an ice maker until about seven years ago, when we moved to the burbs. The landlord had put the refrigerator in a really awkward spot, blocking off access to a lot of storage space, and I tried to move it myself, but there was a very thin copper tube attaching it to the wall. I called the landlord for help in moving the fridge, and then spent twenty-four hours wondering about the tube, which I vaguely thought might be for ducting out moisture or something.
Then it dawned on me that the magical ice maker was getting the water for the ice cubes from somewhere, and felt like an idiot.
Me, and popular mechanics!
(We moved the fridge anyway. I decided I would rather have the cabinets and drawers and make my own ice.)

I read an article on Turkey some years ago. The author explained that he'd found a cartoon from a 1920s magazine, which shows two girls, one dressed as a flapper, and the other in yashmak and a long coat, meeting on the street. The veiled girl says "Look how you're dressed! Aren't you ashamed to be seen?" The flapper says, "I could say the same to you!"
"That was ninety years ago," the author commented, "and nothing has changed."
(Except, I assume that the modern girl is now wearing tight jeans and a tank top.)

Edmund Burke wasn't a conservative, and I hate that he's been hijacked by the present day 'conservatives'.
To me, that's almost as humorous as the worship of Adam Smith by those who have no clue what he actually wrote.
I do wish that many of those who think they're libertarian or conservative would actually read some of these dead white guys that they worship. Some Locke in there might help too...

oh, it's quite lovely. some breweries (ginormous factories actually, but oh well) here sell small 'barrels' of beer, complete with overpriced home appliances that only fit their brand barrels. Now one or two appliance brands had a good idea and started fitting versions of those appliances (only with swappable connectors for different brands, we can get very picky when it comes to beer here) into the doors of their fridges. little bastards to clean, though. still, they sold a lot of those.

It's actually one of the theories on why Americans are so fat. Always consuming drinks with lots of ice lowers the core body temp causing the body to store fat.
So what's Greece and Slovakia's excuse?
(Just picking on nations at the top of the obesity chart that aren't known for guzzling ice-filled drinks.)

French candidate Hollande's projected win could change eurozone's course
Mr. Hollande seems certain to set in motion a change to the strict German-led austerity measures that have so far allowed Berlin to dictate steep spending cuts in national budgets, even as the European debt crisis spilled over into a political crisis, with five governments falling and streets filling with protesters.
.... Hollande has campaigned on plans to incorporate elements of growth into the austerity mandate, an idea bolstered by support from Mario Draghi, head of the European Central Bank, who has suggested a "growth compact" for Europe. Across Europe, even some adherents to austerity are beginning to question it as a solution to the economic crisis. So when Hollande promises a “new direction for Europe,” as he did in his only debate with Sarkozy on May 2, the promise may be more than rhetorical, analysts say.

Possibly, but then you get into questions like: why is obesity at the U.S. at 30%, Slovakia at 22.4%, and Canada all the way down at 14.3%, even though I'm fairly sure that Canada has access to all the processed, frozen, and microwavable crap they want, and a food culture probably more similar to that of the U.S. than Slovakia?

I have a filter on my faucet and I also use my ice cube trays to freeze other items like chicken broth.
I freeze herbs. Parsley, basil, etc. that don't dry freeze well. Chop 'em up, submerge them, and make herb cubes. Then shift to freezer bags so they don't sublimate.

It's a common feature in the States. Most mid-to-high-range models have ice makers built in. Goes with our obsession with cold drinks.
Beer taps, now THAT I've never seen.
I have made a lot of money over the years by converting mini fridges to beer keg holders with a top mounted tap and overflow catch pan and collection pail (optional waste line connection fittings available for only a "bit" more).
You just cannot have a proper and complete "man cave" without your own personal beer tap. ;)

Greek elections: 3 parties vie for top position
[...]
According to the poll, commissioned by four major television stations and carried out by three polling agencies, New Democracy was projected to win between 17 percent and 20 percent of the vote, PASOK between 14 percent and 17 percent, and the left-wing Radical Left Coalition, or Syriza, between 15.5 percent and 18.5 percent.
The extreme right-wing Golden Dawn was predicted to win between 6 and 8 percent, well above the 3 percent needed to enter parliament.
Official results were expected later Sunday night.

I may have told you this story, but I heard a tale from a lady who also plays in the Society for Creative Anachronism. She and a friend, on the way to an event, stopped at a grocery store, and started shopping for camping essentials, wearing their fifteenth-century clothing.
A little boy, watching them whispers, "Mommy, why are they dressed like that?"
His mother whispers back. "Don't point. They're dressed like that because they're Mormons."
She and her friend got out into the parking lot before they began to shriek with laughter. As it happens, they are both Mormons, but this was not why they were wearing fifteenth-century costumes to the grocery store.
(We have a lot of Mormons in the SCA, for various reasons. The 'period styles that will conceal garments, ones that won't, and what creative thing I'm doing about it' conversation crops up on many a costuming list.)

Sweet aircraft. Much better than the Camel in my opinion. Not as good as the Fokker Dv7 though.
I like them. In one of the WW1 aircraft games I have I prefer them over Camels. In the multi-plane melee games we play sometimes I will use a SE5a, a Sopwith Snipe, or a Fokker D.7. if I get my choice. They all have their advantages and weaknesses.

It's a theory with no basis in fact. An iced drink isn't going to lower your core body temp, otherwise you'd have people dying of hypothermia on sunny days. If anything, iced drinks will burn calories through sheer thermodynamics.
Furthermore, body temperature has a minimal effect on fat storage if there's any effect at all. It is insulin that causes fat storage, no more, no less.

SCA-period corsets are not so bad. They didn't go in for the ridiculously tiny waist of some later periods, and I find that they support your back better than a bra. But the hennin would be a bit much. Especially if you worked in a cube farm in Salt Lake City. I suddenly have a vision of a row of 'princess hats' popping up over the top of the dividers.

As a Canadian, I suspect the difference is in amounts.
When I visit my wife in the States I'm always amazed, and a little appalled, at how much food gets delivered to our table when we eat out. I can never finish it despite my healthy appetite. But the people at the surrounding tables scarf it all down and have dessert as well.
Even stuff meant to be used at home is designed to be used in massive amounts. The first time I made scrambled eggs there I ruined them because the Worcestershire sauce bottle was designed to pour rather than shake.
My hypothesis.

I somehow think Alouette will be less worked up about the greater neo-nazi result herre than in Sweden some years ago.
The Swedish Democrats got 5.7% of the vote, which gave Sweden a collective anurism.
It looks like Golden Dawn got better than that. Also, unlike Sweden, Greece is guilty of Genocide (Greek Troops in Bosnia, particularly Srebrenica). And the Golden Dawn has members from that participated in the slaughter.
Screw Greece so much.

Snipe's a pretty good aircraft. Billy Barker took on the entire Richtofen Geschwader in one and lived. Barely.
When I play any aircraft game I prefer 'boom and zoom' fighters. Dogfighting is a messy business that isn't horribly survivable.

That's one of the major advantages of the S.E.5a in Wings of War. Can pretty much outrun anything in the game. (Roughly four speed gradients, and only the SE5a and the SPAD XIII use the top one.) Being able to pretty much disengage at will is nice. But you're a bit less maneuverable than the others. And the Fokker D.7. does some low speed stuff that nothing else can do. Handle with care.
