I think we have a winner for "Most Tepid Endorsement of Mitt Romney."
Santorum endorses one-time rival Romney
WASHINGTON (AP) — Rick Santorum is endorsing his one-time bitter rival Mitt Romney in a late-night e-mail to his supporters.
Santorum on Monday urged his supporters to join him in working with the effective Republican nominee to deny President Barack Obama a second term. In his message, Santorum reminded his supporters of areas where he disagreed with Romney during their slog of a primary.
Yet Santorum says that, in his words, "above all else, we both agree that President Obama must be defeated."
During their contest, Santorum bitterly clashed with Romney. At one point, Santorum called Romney the worst Republican in the country to challenge Obama.
The two met on Friday at the office of Santorum's strategist, and Romney sought to assure Santorum of his conservative credentials.

In that case, it'd be more of a tie, as both are absolutely transparent, Newt looking for a fat check to retire his campaign debt, while Torquemada Jr's looking to keep on the good side of party "moderates."

Santorum is delusional:
'The America we know is being fundamentally changed to look more like a European socialist state than the land of opportunity our founding fathers established.
Freedom and personal responsibility are being replaced with big government dependency. The greatest and most productive workers in the world are being hamstrung by excessive regulations making it impossible to compete. Our healthcare system had been socialized, and the worth of each life dictated by some government bureaucrat. Our allies are insulted while our enemies are appeased.* And our religious beliefs and freedom have come under attack."

Yeah I agree with that. Just would think a US Senator would be smart enough to comprehend that it's not that simple. I mean granted it's one with a well deserved reputation as a nutcase. Makes me pine for the good old days when a gop prez candidate didn't have to debase himself in such a way. Like with Nixon, Ford, Reagan and Bush Sr., who for the most part didn't have to get into a "Quien es mas macho" pissing match with the base.
Why anyone thinks the GOP will return to those days soon is beyond me. Win (like in 2010) or lose (2006, 2008) the gop just keeps moving rightward.

The guy's banking on the average voter being too stupid to understand the basics of a "managed bankruptcy," or just forgetting what the financial markets were like at the time. The only way Detroit was going to go through a "managed bankruptcy" was if somebody fronted the money, but with the bottom having fallen out of the market at the time, nobody was going to do so. If the Obama Administration, following on the Bush Administration's wishes, not put forward the money, we'd instead today be looking at a far worse recession, if not a depression.

Tonight's Our America:
Tom Farrow, a former FBI agent, is driving through the hollows, hillocks, and cow ponds of Cocke County, on the Appalachian side of Tennessee. Cell phone service blinks in and out between the hills. It's a beautiful place, an interplay of mountains and farmland, but several years ago it teemed with corruption. Back in 2005, Farrow led an undercover team that busted a large cockfighting operation in the aptly named county.
Several cockfighting pits in Cocke County hosted hundreds of gambling spectators. The owners of what Farrow calls the "white collar pit" told the FBI they paid off law enforcement—after all, Farrow explains, a pit that big can't exist for 60 years without law enforcement knowing about it. A few miles away, at what Farrow calls "the blue collar pit," the owners stacked bleachers to the ceiling of a large metal shed for the fights. Farrow remembers, "The [body odor] would be so thick you could cut it with a knife."

You know what I meant. It's within the context of being a politician. It's also a colloquialism of sorts or a figure of speech. It isn't meant as a blanket condemnation of salespeople nor their rights and liberties therein. So I'm not calling for a Gulag to hold all salespersons. Just using an old phrase which I'm sure makes all salesmen cringe. I don't use it all the time. Which of course I might add is why they started calling themselves "account executives." ;)

Westerwelle is a staunch supporter of the free market and has proposed reforms to curtail the German welfare state and deregulate German labor law. In an interview in February 2003, Westerwelle described trade unions as a "plague on our country" and said union officials were "the pall bearers of the welfare state and of the prosperity in our country". He has called for substantial tax cuts and smaller government, in line with the general direction of his party. In 2001, he was one of the first politicians to push for a biometric passport

He made public statements in 2010 about the "welfare state",[20] claiming that promising the people effortless prosperity may lead to "late Roman decadence", in reference to a verdict in the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany regarding Hartz IV. This caused quite a stir in Germany.
His official trips as foreign minister have included his partner Michael Mronz, an event manager, and Ralf Marohn, a partner in his brother's company,[21] also causing controversy. Westerwelle and the FDP defended this by saying that it is normal for foreign ministers to take industry representatives on their trips, ignoring the fact that these particular representatives had a personal relationship with him.
In late November 2010, leaked U.S. diplomatic cables revealed that American diplomats considered Westerwelle an obstacle to deeper transatlantic relations and were skeptical of Westerwelle's abilities, with one cable comparing Westerwelle unfavorably to former German foreign minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher.[22]

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has spent much of his career praising the socialist ideas of famed atheists such as Karl Marx and Fidel Castro. Now in the thick of a prolonged battle against cancer, however, the leftist leader is drawing inspiration from a spiritual leader: Jesus Christ.
Chávez has been praying for divine intervention during increasingly infrequent appearances on television, holding up a crucifix while vowing to overcome his illness. He says living with cancer has made him "more Christian," talk that has spurred speculation that cancer might cut short his bid for re-election in October.
Chávez's voice cracked with emotion as he bade farewell to aides and supporters in Caracas on April 30 before leaving for what he said would be his final round of cancer treatment in Cuba.
"I'm sure our Christ will do it again, continuing making the miracle," Chávez said as he raised his cross to his lips and kissed it, prompting applause from an audience of aides.

Ms. Bruninga-Matteau, a 43-year-old single mother who teaches two humanities courses at Yavapai College, in Prescott, Ariz., says the stereotype of the people receiving such aid does not reflect reality. Recipients include growing numbers of people like her, the highly educated, whose advanced degrees have not insulated them from financial hardship.
"I find it horrifying that someone who stands in front of college classes and teaches is on welfare," she says.

Ms. Bruninga-Matteau does not blame Yavapai College for her situation but rather the "systematic defunding of higher education." In Arizona last year, Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican, signed a budget that cut the state's allocation to Yavapai's operating budget from $4.3-million to $900,000, which represented a 7.6 percent reduction in the college's operating budget. The cut led to an 18,000-hour reduction in the use of part-time faculty like Ms. Bruninga-Matteau.

I don't either, but primarily because I feel that the more detached we become from the business of prosecuting war, the more likely we are to enter it without considering the costs of doing so. When replacing our losses is as easy as calling up the factory and ordering a dozen new machines, what's to stop us from deciding that war is the answer when diplomacy "fails"?

It's a show horse and a hanger queen. Even without the oxygen system problems that they're having, it was already more expensive than its predecessors in terms of maintenance. Just the skin alone requires constant care, as deterioration can compromise the fighter's stealth.
I'm sure every service has their own stories right now, of soldiers, sailors, and pilots being told to keep their lips shut on the disconnect between what they need and what the brass think they need. It's the revolving door as well. The generals in charge of the programs won't say a word. As soon as they retire they'll get a consulting job with Lockheed Martin worth millions. The F-22 in the meantime will never see combat duty. Just another show boat for the politicians and brass. Same with the F-35. We could have done well enough with the Super Hornet and an advanced Harrier. Well enough and beyond and at half the price.

Shocking Video Of Kelly Thomas Beating Death Released. Watch With Caution.
[Link: www.pixiq.com...]
The city surveillance video that shows a group of Fullerton police officers beating a homeless mentally ill man to death last year was finally released today, laying to rest any argument that Kelly Thomas was a threat to officers.
The shocking video, which was combined with an audio recorder worn by one of the police officers on the night of July 5, 2011, was shown in court today, then later released to the media.
“Now you see my fists?” Fullerton police officer Manny Ramos asked Thomas while slipping on a pair of latex gloves.
“Yeah, what about them?” Thomas responded.
“They are getting ready to fuck you up,” said Ramos, a burly cop who appears to outweigh Thomas by 100 pounds.
"Well, start punching," Thomas responds, never once displaying any physical aggression towards Ramos.

Never read that one. Is that one of his novels revolving around the cathedral being built in England?
Probably the best one book approach I've seen for getting a look at feudalism and the related mindset is Tuchman's _A Distant Mirror_. After that there's lots of scholarly and other works that touch on various facets of the period, which was actually quite dynamic in a number of ways.

One of the most shocking things to emerge from the Preliminary Trial of Manny Ramos and Jay Cicinelli for the killing of Kelly Thomas are the statements made by Fullerton Fire Department personnel that the cops received attention to their miscellaneous scrapes as Thomas, whose face had just been bashed in, and who was suffocating in his own blood, lay ignored nearby.

[Link: www.amazon.com...]
Technology is a big one. But a lot of societal adjustments as well. Feudalism developing, and then in concert with the RC Church essentially starting towards re-centralization of power. Lots of legal work as customary (common) law was codified, written down, and joined with the existing civil (usually Roman based) law. And since land ownership was so important lots of jurisprudence on inheritance and providing for widows and orphans. With primogenture mixing in to prevent lands from being divided to the point of being marginal holdings.
Warfare and armies get more complex as you move through the period as well. "Classic" feudalism with vassal knight service and such giving way to paying scutage and most of the forces essentially being paid mercenaries. Household knight entourages being important as well since their loyalty was quite important and they were quite often officeholders in various positions of authority.
Getting below the nobility you get innovations such as the heavy plow as well. That put a lot more land into possible cultivation - once you cleared all the trees off! Great need for manpower, and then the Black Death comes along and makes the common laborer all the more valuable.

Bring Yankee money. Check out the beaches around Mobile, like Daphne Island and Gulf Shores. They might save you a bit of time because they're on the turnpikes. (The secondary road net is pretty mangled by the bays and inlets.) Gulf in that area had great seafood, but there is a lot of concern since the BP spill.

Interesting area, though I only know it from a couple weeks relief work after Katrina. If you want to see a (depressed) important fishing community, Bayou la Batre is just south. Gulf Shores starts the good eastern Gulf beaches and seafood. Daphne Island has (had?) an important Gulf environmental center. Mobile itself has some history, esp old houses and French-flavored unique style.

Morning Lizardim from the cool and wet wild north country. We've been having an abundance of rain here recently, which is a darn good thing, considering the disconcertingly snow-free winter we had. It looks like, despite the false start to the spring that annihilated the apple crop, southern Minnesota's river valleys will be flourishing this summer. I came down sick this weekend and wasn't around here much, but now that I'm back, I see an absolutely shocking volume of derp spewing forth from the rabid right-wingers. I guess what's good for America really is bad for the GOP, and vice versa. Well, screw them, then - I want the good times to roll.

I'm also endlessly amused by the ferocity of the debate over the Vikings stadium, which is the current big news here. The sports media, of course, are absolutely hysterical about the possibility of us losing our franchise, but get this - the reason why it's even in danger in the first place is because THE VOTERS DON'T WANT IT. If the Vikings and the NFL want to pony up for their own little playground somewhere out there, that's fine, but you can't force the state to pay for it if we don't want to. In fact, the deal was effectively dead a month ago, until the NFL chairman himself personally stepped in and meddled with things. The House did finally approve a highly modified bill late last night, after hacking another $105 million off the taxpayer bill and sticking it on the team. It's now over to the Senate, but unlike the last round, nobody's counting their chickens this time.

It's not that the voters don't want it; they don't want the state or locality to pay for it. They've got a good point. Stadiums don't end up making money for the localities and the prestige simply doesn't cover the costs.
Here in NJ, the NJ taxpayers are still on the hook for the bond payments on the old Giants Stadium after the NJSEA agreed to a new stadium being built jointly by the Giants/Jets. Each of the teams ponied up the funds to build the new stadium with the state putting up the funds for enhanced infrastructure around the stadium (new/improved roads and a rail link). But the state will have to keep paying for a stadium that no longer exists.
Not exactly a great deal for taxpayers.

The NFL needs to get a clue - no taxpayer money for any privately owned teams. The people do not exist to help you make more money, Mr. Wilf.
If the NFL wants cities and states to pay for stadiums they need to own the teams ala Green Bay.

State-financed stadiums are pretty much always a terrible idea in the US, where you're basically putting money into private owners' pockets.
Comparing Europe and the US on this kind of thing, it's not as if Europe is a golden land of community-based happy sports teams, but it's still breathtaking the extent to which fans in the US are happy to get fucked over by the team ownership, time and again. It's basically an abusive relationship.

A while back in western Pennsylvania there was a referendum for a sports stadium financing deal. It got shot down by the voters. The local government then essentially created a "Plan B" and financed it with public money anyways. Eventually resulted in the removal of two stadiums (Three Rivers and Pitt) and the creation of three (PNC Park, Heinz Field, and the Peterson Event Center on the Pitt campus.)
I'm sure Minnesota (and Minneapolis) can find much better ways to spend those millions. But part of the fearmongering that the sports executives want to spread and that the politicians will be blamed and removed if the professional franchises leave for another city. With Los Angeles being the standard threat over the last decade for professional football teams.

And that is the exact rumor that has been floating around the northlands - "If we don't pay for a new stadium, the Vikings will go to LA." Honestly, we don't care. We just built the Twins a new stadium a few years ago and we're already regretting it. The Vikings can renew their lease on the Metrodome if they really feel like staying, we have no obligation to pay for them.

Basically, what it comes down to is, the Vikings felt like they could get greedy, "let" their lease expire, and assumed that taxpayers would enthusiastically pick up the tab to build them a brand-new stadium they felt they deserved. They weren't counting on how epically they would fail last season, nor on the fact that taxpayers in general don't like coddling sports teams they already see as overpaid and overprivileged. Hopefully, that message got received by somebody, although since the deal is going through (in slightly modified form) I sincerely doubt it.

Yes, and since you already knew the difference, you also know that the distinction is irrelevant (see Kragar's avatar pic) since the corporation does not pay dividends and distributes its profit to charity. It's only a "for-profit corporation" because non-profits in Wisconsin cannot issue stock.

That's a possibility. I'm kind of surprised they found another volunteer for an underwear bomb since the last one went so badly. I suspect that even if the device was viable there might be public statements saying that it would have just horribly mutilated the bomber as a way of discouraging future volunteers.

In an interview with the American Family Association’s OneNewsNow, Thomasson dubbed the measure “hateful toward children” that will particularly impact “molested boys or confused boys.” Despite trying to appear as an advocate for children, Thomasson opposed legal protections for children of same-sex couples, calling them “absolute insanity,” and blamed openly gay fifteen year-old Lawerence King for his own murder by a classmate.

OH NOEZ Obama iz DOOMED Romney takes Ohio!!1!
Obama leads Romney 50-43. That 7 point margin is unchanged from late January when he was ahead by a 49-42 spread. Obama also led 50-41 when PPP polled the state in early November so this makes three polls in a row over the span of six months with him leading by 7-9 points. Obama certainly looks like the favorite in Ohio at this point.
...
The GOP's struggles with women and young voters really show themselves in Ohio. Obama's up 55-36 with women and has a 62-30 advantage with those under 30. If you extend the definition of 'young' voters to those under 45 Obama still holds a massive advantage at 56-35. Romney's winning seniors 49-45 but he needs a much bigger lead than that to make up for his weakness with young people.

That's a tough situation. Just the fact that the crazy lady spoke at a campaign event about trying Obama for treason made it a news worthy situation no matter what his response was. McCain handled a similar situation much better but it was still bad publicity. But this is the consequences of mainstreaming crazy talk about trials for previous administrations.
He should have did what McCain did. Sorry shows a lack of leadership to me. This isn't the first time he's gone silent when craziness is amok. And crazy talk about presidents was happening long before the previous administration. Remember those who spread the crazy rumor that Clinton was a murderer?

Well, hey, if the City of Minneapolis wants to commit money to buying the Vikings a new stadium, great. In fact, they're already going to shoulder part of the bill. But it's not the State of Minnesota's responsibility.
It's not particularly popular even in Minneapolis; as I recall, there was much consternation over an attempt to grant an exemption to a legal requirement for a city-wide referendum on funding a stadium.
I'm not following it all that closely, but don't y'all have other things to fund up in the Lesser White North? Maybe, I dunno, some new bridges or something?

Same-Sex Marriage Backed by Half of Americans
Fifty percent of Americans said they support same-sex marriage, just a pinch lower than last year's survey results, when a majority of Americans (53 percent) favored legalization of same-sex marriage. The first time Gallup posed the same-sex-marriage question was in 1996, when 27 percent said they supported it and 68 percent opposed. Since then, in 2007, 46 percent indicated support, while 44 percent said the same in 2010.
Support seems to fall along political and religious lines with nearly two-thirds of Democrats expressing support, compared with 57 percent of Independents and 22 percent of Republicans in this year's survey.
Though the Catholic Church officially opposes same-sex marriage, 51 percent of Catholics in the U.S. say it should be legal, compared with 38 percent of Protestants and 88 percent of those with no religious identity.

Well, as I suspected yesterday, the foiled underwear bomb plot and the UAV raid that killed a major al Qaeda figure (and who was linked to the USS Cole bombing) were connected.
"I was told by the White House that they are connected, that they are part of the same operation," Representative Peter King told CNN a day after news of the intercepted bomb that authorities said was intended to make its way to an airplane bound for the United States or other Western country.
King and U.S. security officials did not say what happened to the suspected suicide bomber or if he was killed in the strike."The person who actually had the bomb is no longer a threat," King said.
John Brennan, President Barack Obama's top counter terrorism adviser and a former CIA official, told ABC's "Good Morning America" program that authorities are "confident that neither the device nor the intended user of this device pose a threat to us."On Monday, the Obama administration said Middle East authorities had seized an improved underwear bomb within the last 10 days that they said shows al Qaeda's determination to build bombs that can pass through airport security systems.
A day earlier, two Yemeni members of al Qaeda were killed by a missile strike on their car, although Washington and Yemen do not acknowledge U.S. drone attacks on militants in the country.
News of the foiled plot was embargoed by the Administration until after the UAV airstrike, which is a smart move since letting on that the plot was busted might have tipped off those involved in the plot that they were being followed closely by US and foreign intel services.

“We can see how the dream of the Islamic caliphate is being realized, God willing, by Dr. Mohamed Mursi,” Safwat Higazi told thousands of Brotherhood supporters at a Cairo soccer stadium as Mursi – the movement’s presidential candidate – and other Brotherhood officials nodded in agreement.
“The capital of the caliphate – the capital of the United States of the Arabs – will be Jerusalem, God willing,” Higazi said. “Our capital shall not be in Cairo, Mecca or Medina,” he said, before leading the crowd in chants of “Millions of martyrs march toward Jerusalem.”

Compassionate conservatism at work:
Yesterday, House Republicans moved legislation forward aimed at preventing any reductions in military spending, even if that means cutting much needed programs for the nation’s poorest. The House Armed Services Committee’s bill provides $554 billion for the Pentagon — $29 billion more than DOD had requested — while the GOP-led Budget Committee packaged six bills that would “slice $261 billion from food stamps, Medicaid, social services and other programs for struggling Americans.”
Last night on Fox News, House Majoriy Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) claimed that the Republicans were just trimming the fat from the budget and getting rid of wasteful spending.
So let me get this straight -- giving the DoD billions more than what they asked for is fiscally responsible, but cutting food stamps and other social programs is getting rid of wasteful spending?
It's nice to know the GOP cares. Assholes. =P

I'm calling BS on this, and borderline CT. (18+ / 0-)
You're skating the fine boundary between mere complainer-ism and truther CT, right down to your last sentence "too little truth."Quoting Greenwald where he infers that the FBI has "concocted terrorist plots for ages"? Does that include 9/11, or only the cases where they were able to substitute fake explosives for real ones at great risk to themselves?
And your next-to-last paragraph is absurd. Complaining because they pounced the bomb when it was in transit? Really? Would you rather they wait until the last minute, when a bomber has it strapped on and armed to detonate?
As for "the timing coincides," of course it does, we're focusing more effort on Yemen right now. When you sweep the street in front of McDonalds, you pick up more McDonalds wrappers, does that surprise you too?
Sorry, but this "anything they do has got to have nefarious motives" crap is made of the same stuff as "whatever birth certificate Obama provides is probably a fake."
"Minus two votes for the Democrat" equals "plus one vote for the Republican." Arithmetic doesn't care about your feelings.

A Harvard trained lawyer who taught Constitutional law at the University of Chicago Law School, at that.

There's a bit of pushback. The tip jar is (72+ / 8-). But it's still a conspiracy theory which is supposed to be banned over there. Sadly, this is pretty common among progressives. They don't handle terrorism very well. It just doesn't seem to compute with them. It's one of the reasons that the Paulians still fit in pretty well on the left.

Lila Rose: The Church Must 'Rise Up' Because 'This is Our Nation'
Hailed as "the Upton Sinclair of this generation" by her Religious Right elders, Lila Rose has been at the forefront of right-wing video guerrilla activism, targeting groups like Planned Parenthood and then releasing selectively edited footage designed to promote her anti-abortion crusade.
Rose, who believes that all abortions ought to be performed in public, has been the guest on James Robison's "Life Today" television program for the last few days, where the two discussed the need for Christians to take the lead in efforts to outlaw abortion with Robison warning that "the Enemy of life, the Enemy of truth" has politicized the issue in order to intimidate Christians into remaining silent, as Rose declared that it was time for the Church to rise up because "this is our nation":

It's quite clear from the Constitution that Congress may enact laws that provide for the general welfare (Art 1, Sec. 8), as well as those laws that are necessary and proper to effectuate the foregoing powers (Art 1, Sec. 8, Cl. 18). It also allows Congress to impose taxes to pay for those things.

Mystery of horse taming 'solved' by gene study
By Helen BriggsHorses tamed earlier than thought. Horses were domesticated 6,000 years ago on the grasslands of Ukraine, southwest Russia and west Kazakhstan, a genetic study shows.
Domestic horses then spread across Europe and Asia, breeding with wild mares along the way, research published in the journal PNAS suggests.
Horese were tamed right after the Earth was created --who'd thunk it?

Toben said he found it "astonishing" that Edwards believed he could still merit such a position of authority considering that tabloids were reporting on his affair, and Toben knew the reports to be true.

Adaptation: Why your brain loves to tune out
Our brains are remarkably good at tuning out all sorts of constants in our everyday lives.
The constant whir of a fan. The sensation of the clothes against your skin. The chair pressing against your legs. Chances are that you were not acutely aware of these until I pointed them out. The reason you had somehow forgotten about their existence? A fundamental brain process that we call adaptation. Our brains are remarkably good at cancelling out all sorts of constants in our everyday lives. The brain is interested in changes that it needs to react or respond to, and so brain cells are charged with looking for any of these differences, no matter how minute. This makes it a waste of time registering things that are not changing, like the sensation of clothes or a chair against your body, so the brain uses adaptation to tune this background out, allowing you to focus on what is new.

Police investigating Islamic school over curriculum comparing Jews to Nazis
Police are investigating a complaint about a Toronto Muslim school whose curriculum tells boys to exercise so they are “ready for jihad,” refers to “treacherous Jews” and contrasts Islam with “the Jews and the Nazis.”
“Yes, I can confirm for you that a complaint has been made and our Hate Crimes Unit is investigating,” Acting Sergeant Rebecca Boyd, a York Region Police spokeswoman, told the National Post on Monday.
...The complaints concerned the school’s Level 8 curriculum, which describe historical conflicts between Muslims and Jews. It refers to “Jewish plots and treacheries” as well as “crafty” and “treacherous” Jews.
Ugh.

I should get the apartment a thorough cleaning, including the walls and carpets. However, I think I'll delay it until they fix the window frame that has a leak that is causing plaster to bubble in a few spots. I suspect this will be a major repair that will require a bunch of furniture to be moved, and so forth.
At that point I might see if I can get the management copy to eat the bill for at least part of the carpet cleaning (the main room at least) and maybe cut a deal to temporarily shift everything out and get a fresh coat of paint as well.

Makes sense.
I have to wash the walls periodically --smoke, dogs, cats, teenager, husband. Vinegar and hot water. You'd be suprised what is on the walls --I am.
Helps with the cigarette/animal/teenager/man smell too!
