RNC attacks President Obama on Employment... from Overseas Call Center
“As tens of thousands across America protest corporate greed on the occasion of Verizon’s shareholders meeting, we get another reminder of how the company is shipping jobs overseas,” said CWA Chief of Staff Ron Collins, who began his career in a Maryland-based Verizon call center. “It’s hard to imagine anything more hypocritical than the RNC making calls about U.S. unemployment from a Verizon foreign call center.”

The point is that instead of taking the subject seriously, or even thinking about it --the response is to make the subject all about them and their sexual fantasies. The women is objectified and then forgotten.

Katha Pollitt:
...You know the slogan “Women’s rights are human rights”? Well, women’s rights are economic rights, too. Sometimes it’s obvious: when Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker signs a bill reducing access to the courts for women claiming wage discrimination, that’s clearly an attack on women’s paychecks. When Mitt Romney can’t say whether or not he would have supported the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act—which, let’s not forget, simply restored women’s right to sue for pay discrimination to where it was before the Supreme Court limited it—and then names four judges who voted against Lilly Ledbetter as models for his future appointments, he is saying businesses should have broad leeway to pay women less for doing the same work as men.
But when it comes to reproductive issues, apparently, the connection needs to be spelled out. So here it is: limiting women’s access to birth control and abortion is not “culture war” theater, and it is not just a “social issue” either. It’s an economic issue.

It fits her though. This is a nation that aided the Nazis in WWII, and, unlike Sweden who passed on intel, and begrudgingly took in refugees, and trained some Norwegians and Danish Policemen for being able to take back over when the Nazis fell. I don't agree with what Sweden did in whole, but I can see why they did it.
A small, underarmed nation Surrounded by two Totalitarian dickweeds. I can see why they acted that way. But at least they did something for the right side. Unlike Switzerland.
And one of the Swedish people who did help spirit away people from Concentration Camps then ended up assassinated by Lehi three years later. By Lehi. And that assassination is why Sweden is so frosty with Israel. Scandinavia hold grudges, evidently.

Well to be fair, the Swiss also helped the Allies in some ways too. It was the destination of many an escaped Allied POW. Switzerland had to avoid antagonizing the Axis powers, as after the collapse of France in 1940 the Swiss were completely surrounded by Axis territory. And the still needed imports, and that meant trading with the Nazis.

Illustration #131 as to why the Pakistani ISI is our enemy:
May 8, 2012: Pakistan's ISI (their CIA/military intelligence organization) is accused of recently arranging the murder of Afghan Taliban who were willing to negotiate a peace deal with the Afghan government. This gruesome act became apparent over the last week as information came from surviving members of the "peace faction" and kin of the murdered men trickled into public view. It didn't take analysts long to conclude that about 25 Taliban (several leaders and their immediate aides) were killed last month by other Taliban, who opposed any negotiations. The killers were aided by the ISI, which created the Taliban two decades ago and have sought to control this Islamic radical group ever since. The ISI has been able to maintain considerable influence over the Afghan Taliban, because the leadership of that group was provided with sanctuary across the border from Kandahar (the home of the original Taliban) and protection from American UAV missile attacks.
In contrast, the ISI has lost control of the Pakistani branch of the Taliban, which is constantly under attack by American UAVs, although it still has a sanctuary (from Pakistani attacks) in North Waziristan.
The ISI influence on the Afghan Taliban is no secret and is yet another reason why most Afghans hate the Taliban. Afghans in general see Pakistan as a meddlesome and hostile neighbor. Pakistan, in turn, sees Afghanistan as a client state, one that should follow the lead of its more powerful neighbor. This attitude is not very popular in Afghanistan, and even many of Afghan Taliban reluctantly accepts aid from the ISI.

Houston imam's 'fringe' comments draw criticism
Over the past several months, frequenters of the Main Center mosque at the Islamic Society of Greater Houston, the nation's largest Islamic community organization, have reported strange, slightly paranoid and often incoherent sermons from their head imam.
In April, for instance, leading Friday prayers in front of hundreds of Muslims, Omar Inshanally warned against a "global population reduction plan" and the dumping of fluoride, Prozac and lithium in the water "to control populations," according to Aziz Gilani, a 31-year-old venture capitalist in attendance.

Because they will. Over 60% of college graduates are now female. In most professional schools (particularly law and business, where most politicians come from) women are now the majority. Furthermore, women under 30 make more than men...for the first time in our history. Thus women will not just vote, but also set the dialogue and agenda more and more with each passing day. The reactionaries may win this battle, but they can't win the war.
All FIVE Republican women Senators voted for renewing the Violence Against Women Act, while 75% of their fellow male Republicans voted against. Thing is the GOP can't remain 90% male in Congress much longer; nor will the Dems even remain at their current 65% male figure.
Sure, there are some fire breathing women out there who have gladly joined the GOP's war on women. But polls have consistently showed for decades that women overall are much more sympathetic to women's issues. So ultimately more women in power = policy changes.

re: #74 palomino
What did Sandra Fluke ever do to earn your disagreement?
She doesn't want your taxpayer money paying for her contraception; she wants her employer/school to do it, like most employers and schools.
And to clarify even further, she want's the premiums she pays to go towards a more efficient and cost effective plan. Whereas right now she's locked into a plan that costs her and the school more precisely because it doesn't cover the kinds of preemptive care that prevents conditions like endometriosis and ovarian tumors. Being required to pay more to get less in order to have someone else's religious convictions foisted upon you seems genuinely un-american. Being put in that position solely due to your gender makes it even more of an egregious abuse of power.
If catholic and other religious universities want to accept and disperse Pell grants and Federally backed student loans then (ignoring the establishment clause of the Constitution for a moment) they still shouldn't be allowed to get away with such blatantly discriminatory behavior.

Your very welcome. I can remember when there was lots of talk of affirmative action for women. No more, because they no longer need it; due to a variety of cultural reasons they are now outperforming men nearly across the board and by a significant margin. If anything it's us men who need affirmative action.

We hear all the time from indoctrinated talking point regurgitators that "America has the world's best healthcare." But, among developed countries, we pay the most and have the shortest life expectancy.
Normally when a product or service costs more and provides less in the way of results, it isn't labeled the "best in the world." Don't you just love propaganda?

So, looking at the what Lugar wrote:
Lugar's parting words: Part defense, part warning
Lugar had his aides distribute a prepared statement that was part detailed defense of his ill-fated and often maligned campaign strategy, and part stark warning to both parties about the divisive state of American politics -- starting with Richard Mourdock, the Republican who beat him.
"His embrace of an unrelenting partisan mindset is irreconcilable with my philosophy of governance and my experience of what brings results for Hoosiers in the Senate. In effect, what he has promised in this campaign is reflexive votes for a rejectionist orthodoxy and rigid opposition to the actions and proposals of the other party," Lugar wrote of Mourdock,
Mourdock appealed to Republican voters by arguing Lugar's tolerance for compromise should be replaced by stand-your-ground confrontation."He has pledged his support to groups whose prime mission is to cleanse the Republican party of those who stray from orthodoxy as they see it," said Lugar of the GOP opponent who beat him.
"This is not conducive to problem solving and governance. And he will find that unless he modifies his approach, he will achieve little as a legislator. Worse, he will help delay solutions that are totally beyond the capacity of partisan majorities to achieve," said Lugar.
[...]
He said if Republicans continue to make it difficult for legislators to find compromise, "we will be relegated to minority status. Parties don't succeed for long if they stop appealing to voters who may disagree with them on some issues."
And he didn't stop there.
His stinging words about today's divisive politics were reminiscent of moderate Republican Senator Olympia Snowe's open disgust for what the process has become when she announced she was retiring.
"I don't remember a time when so many topics have become politically unmentionable in one party or the other. Republicans cannot admit to any nuance in policy on climate change. Republican members are now expected to take pledges against any tax increases. For two consecutive presidential nomination cycles, GOP candidates competed with one another to express the most strident anti-immigration view, even at the risk of alienating a huge voting bloc," said Lugar.
[...]
The problem is, not matter how wise Lugar's words, the masses of registered GOP voters who don't keep up on these things - all those little grey haired ladies watching DWTS - will still go to the polls are vote their party line, not really understanding what is going on within the GOP.
I agree with Lugar that the GOP is on the road to permanent minority status, but I fear it will take longer than some expect, and in the mean time great damage will be done.
And I also note the religious language that Lugar used. He's quite aware the the GOP "base" now is being reduced to Christian fundamentalists and that they are just sheep to the monied interests who know how to manipulate crowds.

Lugar like Bob Bennett in Utah last year is just another Senate Republican who committed the sin of compromise. The GOP if you ask me deserves to have minority status. What have their leadership done other than shrill for corporate interests over the interests of the American people. You have Republican committee chairs in the house who prefer cutting things like Meals on Wheels and school lunches to corporate tax increases. Lugar was a conservative but he wasn't foaming at the mouth partisan. As voices like that are replaced in the Republican caucus by partisans who value that more than statesmanship, the worse things will be in the Senate.

It's part of being "conservative", which in this case means the most common denotation, in that those three were never known for being cutting edge as far as being in front of modern society.
They and so many older Republicans are now learning the truth about the deal they made years ago with the Religious Right (the Falwell lead group) - that religious fundamentalists will not stop until they have purged out what they consider "evil".

This should clue in anyone who says that they're a sane non-TPer Reagan Republican; the fact that what passes for the party base nowadays has rid the party of one of Reagan's staunchest GOP allies says plenty. Sean Carroll - 'The case for naturalism':
“Atheism” is a fine word, and I’m happy to describe myself as an atheist. God is an idea that has consequences, and those consequences don’t accord with the world we experience any better than countless other ideas we’ve given up on. But given a choice I would always describe myself first as a “naturalist” — someone who believes that there is only one realm of reality, the material world, which obeys natural laws, and that we human beings are part of it. “Atheism” is ultimately about rejecting a certain idea, while “naturalism” is about a positive acceptance of a comprehensive worldview. Naturalists have a lot more work to do than simply rejecting God; they bear the responsibility of understanding how to live a meaningful life in a universe without built-in purpose.

Sen. Richard Lugar: Five reasons he lost
[Link: www.indystar.com...]
I think the two biggest are...:
2. His voting record. Lugar voted for the Wall Street and auto bailouts, and the fact that those came at the request of President George W. Bush didn't help him any.
....
4. Lack of coherent campaign message. There was no cohesive theme. Lugar didn't remind voters until the very end of what he had done for them. And much of the campaign in the final weeks seemed more about potshots at Mourdock, which clashed with voters' image of Lugar as a statesman.
I'll admit I'm shocked he lost by 22pts. It was a slaughter. 2 months ago I thought he was still a shoo-in but he ran a horrible campaign, he's 80, and he hasn't actually lived in IN since 1977. He ran up against a decent candidate and acted like he was having a panic attack.

“Those of us who are trained in the sciences look at problems differently,” says Mourdock. “We are more analytical and less ready to accept what appears to be the obvious answer.”But is he prepared to balance the views of his conservative constituents with his own training in science when faced with issues of climate change, reproductive health and evolutionary science?
[...]
Mourdock says that his background in science will allow him to take an analytical approach to politics. He scoffs at the notion that conservatives are waging a war on science.
“I think that’s silly. Galileo was attacked. Darwin was attacked. I don’t know that this is a political attack so much as a societal attack,” says Mourdock. “If it’s political, it’s because so much in our lives, and I’m not just talking science here anymore, seems to require involvement of government.”
Mourdock says that topics like teaching creationism in schools should be debated at the local level, not the national level.
[...]
Mourdock self-identifies as a Christian, but he does not take a Creationist view on the origin of the Universe. He says it is important that political parties not be divided into a party for science and a party against science.
“I tell my Christian friends: when you look at the rock record, the fossil record, of course evolution occurred. It continues to occur,” says Mourdock. “It is important that we understand that others can disagree. I’m more concerned, frankly, when I see science misused by politicians.”
Specifically, Mourdock says the debate is not over on global climate change. He says that in science the debate never ends.
“That is the most anti-scientific stance that you can take,” says Mourdock. “It’s never over. One question leads to another, leads to another, leads to another.”
Mourdock says there will be a consensus of a majority on climate change, but his preference is that it be based on science that is questioned. (Read positions by AGU , GSA and AAAS.)
“Politicians are always going to do a horrible job of assessing science when there is no clear, obvious outcome,” says Mourdock, “because science is being used to drive a political outcome.”
The bottom line is funding, he says.
“One group will want one outcome because it may mean funding in this area,” says Mourdock, “and another group will want another outcome because it means there won’t be funding in that area. It’s not about what the science says. It’s about how the science is being used.”
I'll give him that he's head above TP when it comes to evolution. But he is still full of BS on teaching science and about settled science.

Billy Graham is a prick.
You can quote me on that.
What is he up to again?
[Link: news.bbc.co.uk...]
In the taped conversation, Mr Graham said the Jewish "stranglehold" on the media "has got to be broken or this country's going down the drain".
"You believe that?" Nixon replies.
"Yes, sir."
"Oh boy. So do I. I can't ever say that but I believe it," Nixon says.
"If you get elected a second time, then we might be able to do something," Mr Graham replies.
Later in the conversation, when Nixon raises the subject of Jewish influence in Hollywood, Mr Graham says:
"A lot of Jews are great friends of mine. They swarm around me and are friendly to me, because they know that I am friendly to Israel and so forth, but they don't know how I really feel about what they're doing to this country, and I have no power and no way to handle them."
[Link: www.jewishfederations.org...]
At one point on the tape, Nixon and Rev. Graham share their antipathy of American Jews while complimenting "Israeli Jews."
"The best Jews are actually the Israeli Jews," says Nixon.
"That's right," agrees Rev. Graham, who later concurs with Nixon's assertion that a "powerful bloc" of Jews confronts Nixon in the media.
"And they're the ones putting out the pornographic stuff," Rev. Graham adds.
Marty said the split of Evangelicals being "pro-Israel and domestically anti-Semitic is a very familiar story."
But the pro-Israel support is deceptive, he said, because it is based on the belief that a strong Israel is necessary for Jesus to come again, when they believe all Jews will be either converted or killed.
"Israel needs all the friends it can get, but not for these reasons," Marty said.
[Link: www.usatoday.com...]
The 1973 transcript is a wide-ranging conversation between Graham and Nixon in which Graham heaps praise on the president, telling him "Congratulations on everything," and "I believe the Lord is with you."
Nixon raises the news that Israel had mistakenly shot down a Libyan civilian airliner, killing all on board. Nixon says, "What I really think is, deep down in this country, there is a lot of anti-Semitism, and all this is going to do is stir it up."
Graham agrees that it will push anti-Semitism "right to the top." Then he turns the conversation to a report he read somewhere that Israel supposedly wants to "expel all the Christians." Graham mentions Jewish opposition to a Christian evangelical unified campaign, saying Jews are "going right after the church."
He also mentions an upcoming meeting with the interreligious affairs director of the American Jewish Committee, the late Rabbi Marc Tanenbaum. In 1977, the organization honored Graham, saying, according to Graham biographer William Martin, that "most of the progress of Protestant-Jewish relations over the past quarter century was due to Billy Graham."
In 1973, Graham calls Tanenbaum the "cleverest and most brilliant" of the rabbis.
Nixon mentions an upcoming dinner with Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, and Graham, who said in earlier taped conversations that Israelis were the best kind of Jews, now brings up a biblical reference to the dense and difficult final book of the Bible, Revelation, which says in verse 3:9 that there are those who claim to be Jews who are liars, and that they belong to a "synagogue of Satan."

N.C.'s Amendment 1 Doesn't Just Screw Over Gay People
By Samantha Oltman
North Carolinians vote today on Amendment 1, a measure that would amend the state constitution—for the first time ever—to ban gay marriage. It's worth noting that gay marriage is already illegal in North Carolina. But if the amendment passes, which the latest poll suggests it will (with a 55-39 margin), North Carolina will join the 29 other states, including California, Ohio, and Texas, that have amended their constitutions to prohibit marriage between same-sex couples.
But Amendment 1 could also have troubling implications for straight couples. Thanks to the law's vague wording, critics argue it would likely strip away many of the legal rights associated with domestic partnerships or legal unions...

The underlying link is pretty funny interesting:
Civil unions bill killed along with 30 other bills in late-night game of political chicken
[Link: www.denverpost.com...]
A bill to allow same-sex couples to form civil unions died on the calendar late Tuesday, taking down more than 30 other measures with it in a dramatic game of political chicken in which no one would blink.
When Republican Speaker Frank McNulty acknowledged there was an impasse and abruptly ended his news conference on the House floor, Coloradans watching in the gallery started chanting: "Shame on you! Shame on you!"
Everyone was kicked out of the gallery after someone yelled, "I hope you (expletive) die!"
.....
in the process of making sure civil unions died on the calendar, a slew of other bills became casualties too.Among the bills ensnared in the tug-of-war in the House: $20 million worth of water projects statewide and a bill that sets a standard for driving while stoned.
.....
Rep. David Balmer, R-Centennial, practically screamed as he pounded on the lectern."Not a one of you has the courage to vote against chocolate!" he said.
I wonder how they were going to set the standard for stoned driving?

Louis Meyer, the attorney representing Huff and Seaton, told HuffPost via email that his investigation has turned up more complaints against Reichert.
"We have discovered that Officer Reichert has a pattern and practice of fabricating probable cause to try and justify illegal traffic stops," Meyer wrote. "After making these illegal traffic stops, Officer Reichert conducts illegal searches of the individuals and their vehicles. Once again, he fabricates probable cause by falsely claiming that his K9 'alerted' to the presence of drugs in the vehicle."
Meyer added that "others have come forward and are willing to testify regarding their encounters with this officer and how it affected them."

Appellate court halts enforcement of IL law barring recording of cops
[Link: www.suntimes.com...]
A federal appellate court has ordered Illinois police and prosecutors not to arrest or charge anyone for recording police officers.
The state’s eavesdropping law — which makes it a felony to tape-record a police officer arresting someone — is being challenged in the courts and by state legislators.
City officials had already announced they would not be enforcing the law during the NATO Summit this month, because of the court challenges and because “police will have more important things to focus on than enforcing that law,” said Roderick Drew, a spokesman for the city Law Department.
The appellate court threw back to a lower court a case in which the American Civil Liberties Union sued Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez over enforcement of the law. The appeals court also issued an injunction in the meantime barring enforcement of the ordinance.
“The Illinois eavesdropping statute restricts far more speech than necessary to protect legitimate privacy interests. ... It likely violates the First Amendment’s free-speech and free-press guarantees,” federal Appellate Judge Diane Sykes wrote.
The ACLU filed the suit because it wants to be able to record police making arrests.
Those damn hippies at the ACLU! Record 'em if you got 'em!

It has several premises correct, i.e. in a single state if you don't wish harmful policies to be voted in by the new (Palestinian) citizens, you pretty much have to make them into 2nd class citizens, and the state ceases to be democratic. But that's why I'm for the 2 state solution and don't think the 1-state is workable.

Not over the top enough to be a proper Swiftian piece. And now for something completely different, the Minnesota State Senate approved a modified version of the Vikings stadium bill yesterday, which now goes to committee to get resolved. It is certain that Governor Dayton will sign it, because he has made this a major sticking point of late. The main differences to resolve are that the Senate did not push quite as much of the cost back to the team's owners, but instead opted for a 10% fee on parking and suites and a 6.875% fee on merchandising to cover the reduction in state contribution. Time will tell what form the final bill will take, but it looks like the Vikings are finally able to breathe a sigh of relief.

I think that Sendak was one of the rare artists who could genuinely understand children. Terri Gross replayed her interviews of him on NPR's Fresh Air. Richard Lugar speaking sense?:
If Mr. Mourdock is elected, I want him to be a good Senator. But that will require him to revise his stated goal of bringing more partisanship to Washington. He and I share many positions, but his embrace of an unrelenting partisan mindset is irreconcilable with my philosophy of governance and my experience of what brings results for Hoosiers in the Senate. In effect, what he has promised in this campaign is reflexive votes for a rejectionist orthodoxy and rigid opposition to the actions and proposals of the other party. His answer to the inevitable roadblocks he will encounter in Congress is merely to campaign for more Republicans who embrace the same partisan outlook. He has pledged his support to groups whose prime mission is to cleanse the Republican party of those who stray from orthodoxy as they see it.

Not over the top enough to be a proper Swiftian piece. So that leaves it open to whether this is underdone satire (attempting to open discussion), or horribly misplaced opinion left wide open for criticism due to how he goes about singling out a group as "parasitic" and proposing "minimalizing" them.
At the very beginning he dismisses the current policy of integrating this population (of which I am one BTW) into the military and the workplace, and declares that the only "solution" is to reduce their numbers. He then neglects to explain how he would go about this.

Since this other article you linked to is also by this same Yaron London, I have not seen his suggestions embraced by anyone else. The current conversation is about integrating the Haredi population as it should be. Shame on YNet for giving this bigoted asshole a platform. Can you imagine the uproar if someone suggested a similar policy for Palestinians?

re: #326 Learned Mother of Zion
Not minimize - shrink.
He thinks that the Haraedi are forced into yeshivas. That's not an accurate reflection of the state of affairs. The way Israeli law is written, they are given an exemption by studying in yeshiva - it's an incentive to allow study.
Integrating the haraedi into military service will accomplish far more than some ambiguous policy, which will somehow shrink that community. Spreading the burdens of national defense across more Israeli citizens.

Right. If he was going full-bore Swift I expected something about getting them declared kosher and eating them.
Since it didn't go into obvious satire that leaves it much too open to decide what he is trying to say - unless he is simply complaining in a way that comes across as very crasss and unhelpful; e.g. bitching about a group, deriding them, and not offering anything in terms of a solution.
I also do not have much knowledge of the degree and seriousness of the issue in Israel. Though from the articles published now and then on LGF I get the impression that part of it is fanatics on each side not being tolerant and thus constanting increasing the rhetoric or carrying out annoying stunts.

Senior Hamas Official: Palestinians Don’t Come from Palestine
Hamas Minister of Interior and National Security, Fathi Hammad recently said that Palestinians actually came from Egypt, Yemen and Saudi Arabia. In an interview he gave to Al-Hekma TV, an Egyptian network, he discussed the necessity of Arab-Muslim solidarity and the support the Gazans need from the Egyptians to continue with their Jihad efforts. He declared that: “Al-Aqsa and the land of Palestine represent the spearhead for Islam and for the Muslims. Therefore, when we seek the help of our Arab brothers, we are not seeking their help in order to eat, to live, to drink, to dress, or to live a life of luxury. No. When we seek their help, it is in order to continue to wage Jihad”.
In an attempt to gain Egyptian sympathy, he said that all Palestinians have Arab roots, blood ties in various countries on the Arabian Peninsula and Egypt. Hammad said that half of his family was Egyptian and over thirty large families are named Al-Matzri, from Egypt. Half of all Gazans came from Egypt; the other half came from Saudi Arabia and Yemen. He repeated and clarified: “Who are the Palestinians? We have many families named Al-Matzri, whose roots are Egyptian. Egyptians! They came from Alexandria, Cairo, Dumietta, the North, from Aswan and Upper Egypt. We are Egyptians. We are Arabs. We are Muslims. We are a part of you”.
These statements stand in stark contrast to the common perception that the Palestinian Arabs have lived within the borders of the State of Israel from “time immemorial”.

Talk about a dangerous situation going on in Libya...
WHENEVER the CIA uncovers a new plot overseas, like al-Qa'ida's latest scheme to blow up civilian aircraft using advanced, hard-to-detect explosives, people breathe a sigh of relief.
But this is a multifront war, and almost by definition, the attack that gets you is the one you didn't see coming.
For the past few months, I've been hearing private warnings about another threat to commercial planes - namely, the spread of shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles from Libya after the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi's regime. A State Department official said in February that Gaddafi had acquired 20,000 of these weapons, and that only 5000 of them had been secured through a $US40 million US program to buy up loose missiles.
"How many are still missing?" asked Andrew Shapiro, assistant secretary of state for political-military affairs, in a speech last February. "The frank answer is we don't know and probably never will."
Here's the scary part: Two former CIA counterterrorism officers told me last week that technicians recently refurbished 800 of these man-portable air-defences systems (known as MANPADS) - some for the African jihadist group Boko Haram that is often seen as an ally of al-Qaeda - for possible use against commercial jets flying into Niger, Chad and perhaps Nigeria.
The former CIA officers have been trying for eight months to alert US intelligence, without success.
...
Yikes!

Israeli law grants exemption from military service if you can prove that you're engaging in religious studies. It was amended by the Tal Law (expires 7/2012), but the Israeli Supreme Court ruled that it violated the equal protection provisions under Israel's Basic Law for Human Dignity and Freedom. The law will be allowed to sunset - it can't be reauthorized by the Knesset. The Knesset is considering how to expand service to the community.
The idea of the religious exemption dates back to Ben Gurion's decision to grant the exemption to religious students. But with the demographics shifting (the Orthodox are growing at a faster pace than non Orthodox), it's putting additional pressure on the secular community to achieve the obligations of service. Proponents think that bringing the orthodox into military service will spread the burdens, increase assimilation into Israeli society, and help the orthodox gain valuable skills (presently, the orthodox make up a major portion of welfare costs).

It's a double edge success. On the one hand, we got valuable intel leading to the airstrike that killed one of the perpetrators of the USS Cole bombing and thwarted the latest attempt at an underwear bombing of an aircraft.
On the other, that agent's utility is done. We've lost that agent's inside access to AQ and its upper echelons.
While AQ may have to reevaluate who everyone is that is joining up with various AQ cells and sows seeds of doubt about any potential recruits, we no longer have a guy at a top level passing along key intel.

Ben Gurion's original plan was based on the premise that the Haredi population, which at that time was still very small, would dwindle and eventually become extinct, except for a small handful who would be kept around for the entertainment of the tourists. He totally did not anticipate that the population would explode the way that it has.

I think we might see more of this technique. Use of informants has worked wonders domestically. If a domestic terrorist tries to hook up with Al Qaeda of buy bomb making materials there's a good chance they'll be dealing with an FBI agent. It's a great deterrent. Toronto Islamic school apologizes for ‘anti-Semitic’ curriculum likening Jews to Nazis
A Toronto Islamic school under police investigation over its “anti-Semitic” curriculum has apologized to the Jewish community and promised to review its teaching materials following an outcry.
The East End Madrassah acknowledged in a press release that passages of its educational texts that referred to “crafty” and “treacherous Jews” and contrasted Islam with “the Jews and the Nazis” were a mistake.
But the apology did not end the controversy. Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty told reporters on Tuesday he was pleased the matter was being probed by police and school board officials. “There is no room for hatred or intolerance in this province,” he said.
Meanwhile, Jewish groups said they were not satisfied with the school’s response, and neither was Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak. “It’s not a matter of reviewing materials,” he said. “This is hatred. This is poison. This type of material has no place in our classrooms, no place in the province.”
...The school is one of three affiliated with the Islamic Shia Ithna Asheri Jamaat, an Islamic centre that once demanded the Ontario government apologize for hosting Salman Rushdie, the British author condemned to death by Iran over his book The Satanic Verses.
More recently, the centre’s resident scholar complained in a sermon posted online that the West was “hyping the whole world up” against Iran over its nuclear program, adding, “this is all because of this fellow sitting in the Middle East, Israel.”

Again, getting people to infiltrate groups is not a new technique or strategy. It's old as the hills, and I'm sure we've been doing it all along. It's challenging, given that we have fewer Arab-American resources to draw upon, but it's a completely standard way of doing intelligence work.

The Criminal Code of Canada
Sections 318, 319, and 320 of the Code forbid hate propaganda.[3] "Hate propaganda" means "any writing, sign or visible representation that advocates or promotes genocide or the communication of which by any person would constitute an offence under section 319." Section 318 prescribes imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years for anyone who advocates genocide. The Code defines genocide as the destruction of an "identifiable group." The Code defines an "identifiable group" as "any section of the public distinguished by colour, race, religion, ethnic origin or sexual orientation." Section 319 prescribes penalties from a fine to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years for anyone who incites hatred against any identifiable group. Section 320 allows a judge to confiscate publications which appear to be hate propaganda. Under section 319, an accused is not guilty: (a) if he establishes that the statements communicated were true; (b) if, in good faith, the person expressed or attempted to establish by an argument an opinion on a religious subject or an opinion based on a belief in a religious text; (c) if the statements were relevant to any subject of public interest, the discussion of which was for the public benefit, and if on reasonable grounds he believed them to be true; or (d) if, in good faith, he intended to point out, for the purpose of removal, matters producing or tending to produce feelings of hatred toward an identifiable group in Canada.

Fischer 'Apologizes' to Romney, Gives Him Credit for Grenell's Resignation
apparently Fischer has since realized that demanding concessions from politicians and then mocking those politicians when then make the very concessions that you demanded might be somewhat hypocritical ... and so yesterday Fischer offered an amazingly back-handed "apology" to Romney, saying that even though the entire fiasco demonstrated Romney's weakness and utter lack of core values, he still deserves credit for having done the right thing in letting Grenell go:
I want to issue what amounts to sort of an apology to Gov. Romney. I was pretty hard on him on Friday and my point on Friday was his waffling when conservatives raised a concern about Richard Grenell - he went silent, he put a bag over Richard Grenell's head, let him fall on his sword, only said supportive things to Richard Grenell after he had resigned - it was an indication of the challenges that we have with Gov. Romney, that he does not seem to have a core set of principles, a core set of values by which he guides himself. And the fact that he could be so - I used the word intimidated or coerced or whatever - could be so influenced by a comparatively small number of conservatives ... and so I think it was illustrative of Gov. Romney's weaknesses and things that we've got to be concerned about.
But, at the end of the day, I didn't make enough of the fact that he did the right thing here. Now, regardless of why he did it - most likely, it was for reasons that are politically expedient - but he did the right thing. He allowed this resignation to take place, probably had some hand in bringing it about; I cannot believe that they were entirely passive in that. But here's the point: at the end of the day, Richard Grenell had stepped down, this homosexual activist, this crusader for gay marriage had stepped down and Romney could have taken a different tack. So I want to give Romney credit for doing that. Now, you'd like to know that he did it on the grounds of principle and conviction and all that - I believe that would kind of be a bridge too far - but nevertheless, Gov. Romney did the thing that he should have done.

With the financial sector sure to summon massive amounts of money and resources to battle any criminal or civil prosecutions over its role in the 2008 crisis, a key is how much resources authorities will have at their disposal to battle back.
When New York attorney general Eric Schneiderman appeared before the Congressional Progressive Caucus in late April, he asked the members to help him obtain funding for the Residential Mortgage-Backed Securities working group, which he co-chairs. “If you want to help me badger everybody, that’s good,” he said. “I’m a good badger by myself but I know there are some experts in this room.”...

Orangutans at Miami zoo use iPads to communicate
Jacobs said she began letting the orangutans use iPads last summer, based on the suggestion of someone who had used the devices with dolphins. The software was originally designed for humans with autism and the screen displays pictures of various objects. A trainer then names one of the objects, and the ape presses the corresponding button.
The devices have been a great addition to the enrichment programs Jungle Island already does with the orangutans, Jacobs said. Keepers have long used sign language to communicate with them. Using their hands, the orangutans can respond to simple questions, identify objects and express their wants or needs. The apes can also identify body parts, helping the trainers care for them and even give them shots.
"We're able to really monitor their health on a daily basis," Jacobs said of the need for communication with the orangutans. "We can do daily checks. If somebody's not feeling well, we know it immediately."
While Jacobs and other trainers have developed strong relationships with the orangutans, the iPad and other touchscreen computers offer an opportunity for them to communicate with people not trained in their sign language.
"It would just be such a wonderful bridge to have," Jacobs said. "So that other people could really appreciate them."
Orangutans are extremely intelligent but limited by their physical inability to talk, she said.
"They are sort of trapped in those bodies," Jacobs said. "They have the intelligence that they need to communicate, but they don't have the right equipment, because they don't have voice boxes or vocal cords. So this gives them a way to let us know what they know, what they are capable of, what they would like to have."

VIDEO: Accused bridge bomb plot suspect caught on camera talking violence in 'Occupy' documentary
CLEVELAND - We are getting our first look inside the Occupy Cleveland movement. NewsChannel5 exclusively obtained video of the recording by an independent documentary producer. One of the central characters in the video is Connor Stevens. He identifies himself in the video as an Occupy Cleveland participant.
In the video, Stevens is recorded as saying, "It's been really good, there's been a lot of stress and frustration but all around it's been a really good experience. Within the first day there was so much information that my mind was boggled. My favorite part is meeting people walking down the street, average people, talking to them, hearing about how they're affected by the economy, by the justice system, things like that..."
But now, the justice system has caught up with Stevens. He's at the center of what the FBI called a national security threat. He's one of the five people charged with attempting to blow up local the Route 82 bridge in last week over the Cuyahoga Valley National Park between Brecksville and Sagamore Hills.
..."We were saying two years before that we would have been kicking out windows and stuff like that. Back in like 2008, I was at that state of mind and now I'm understanding that we're in it for the long haul and those kind of tactics just don't cut it. And it's actually harder to be non-violent than it is to do stuff like that," Stevens said.

STUDY: Counseling And Waiting Periods Before Abortion Procedures Does Not Change Women’s Decisions
Researchers gathered data from pre-counseling needs assessment forms and clinical intake forms of roughly 5,000 women at one abortion clinic in 2008. State laws adding waiting periods and mandating information that doctors must tell their patients assume that women need time and counseling to make their decisions, but the study’s data show that these assumptions are wrong:
In nearly nine out of 10 cases, women expressed high confidence in their abortion decision before they received any counseling; these women would likely not benefit from additional mandated counseling or delay. Furthermore, one-size-fits all policies may not address the complex needs of women who experience ambivalence, have negative beliefs about abortion, feel pressured to have an abortion, have spiritual concerns about abortion or have low levels of social support.

I have no cousins.
I watched Deliverance for the first time a couple of weeks ago.
I think there are isolated areas of the world where, there is indeed, genetic reasons for not marrying your cousin.

Nine men jailed in Britain for grooming underage girls for sex using drugs, alcohol
LONDON — A group of nine men of Pakistani and Afghan origin were sentenced to jail Thursday for grooming white British schoolgirls for sex, using drink and drugs.
The men, aged between 22 and 59, were convicted Wednesday of conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with children under the age of 16, and other offences.
Passing sentence at Liverpool Crown Court in northwest England, judge Gerald Clifton gave them prison terms ranging from four to 19 years.
Some of the girls were as young as 13 at the time.
“All of you treated them as though they were worthless and beyond any respect,” Clifton told the defendants.
“One of the factors leading to that was the fact that they were not part of your community or religion.
“Some of you, when arrested, said it was triggered by race.
“That is nonsense. What triggered this prosecution was your lust and greed.”
The abuse took place in the market town of Rochdale outside Manchester in northwest England.

West Virginians don't like the possibility of losing their job because the closing of a lot of coal mines. Obama can kiss this state goodbye in November.

Easier to blame Obama. Anyhow, I think West Virginians are anxious because for many of these mining families, it's something that goes back generations. But I think the transition will be more beneficial than harmful in the long run given that with less reliance on mines, people will live longer and make more money.

Cheap natural gas? This is what they are reading in their newspapers...
Power plant closures to cost US towns jobs, taxes
For more than 90 years, the coal-fired power plant in Glen Lyn, Va., has been churning out electricity and contributing to local prosperity. Of late, it has generated nearly a quarter of the revenue for the $1 million budget of the town.
Yet when the plant ultimately shuts down to comply with new federal air pollution regulations by the end of 2014, says Town Manager Howard Spencer, so too might the community of 200.
"If the town lost all of that revenue," he says, "we would struggle to even continue to be incorporated."
An Associated Press analysis has found that more than 32 mostly coal-fired power plants in a dozen states will be forced to close because of the new, more stringent regulations. Another 36 plants are at risk of closing.

The biggest threat to continued use of coal-fired generation, Herholdt said, was the low prices of natural gas. “This is the kind of perfect-storm – we have these issues, abundant shale gas and unusually mild winter keeping natural gas prices low, natural gas well-head prices predicted to average $3 an MCF in 2012, $4 in 2013,” Herhodlt said. “As a result, electric utilities are looking to natural gas as a potential replacement for emission non-compliant, older coal-fired plants.”

Coal-to-gas switching to continue: Energy Department
Generation of electricity from coal is expected to slide again in 2012 as generation from natural gas continues to rise, according to the Short Term Energy Outlook released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration on April 10.
Generation from coal declines a steep 9.9 percent from 2011 in 2012 in the EIA's forecast, continuing a decline that brings coal-fired generation down nearly 23 percent from its peak in 2007.
