One former classmate and old friend of Romney’s – who refused to be identified by name – said there are “a lot of guys” who went to Cranbrook who have “really negative memories” of Romney’s behavior in the dorms, behavior this classmate describes as “evil” and “like Lord of the Flies.”
The classmate believes Romney is lying when he claims to not remember it.
“It makes these fellows [who have owned up to it] very remorseful. For [Romney] not to remember it? It doesn’t ring true. How could the fellow with the scissors forget it?” the former classmate said.

[dons art historian hat] 20th-century dictators have a solid history of supporting unsubtle, propagandistic art as an antidote to nasty, subversive modernist art. I know it's uncool to make analogies to Hitler so I won't, but can we bring in Stalin and Mao? The typology is pretty universal -- ideologically twisted dictatorship = bad, McNaughtony art and suppression/destruction of other cultural forms. [removes art historian hat and returns to being cross with Mitt Romney]

Franklin Graham: Obama is shaking his fist at God
“On Tuesday my state of North Carolina became the 31st state to approve a constitutional amendment defining marriage as being between a man and a woman. While the move to pass amendments defining marriage is relatively new, the definition of marriage is 8,000 years old and was defined not by man, but by God Himself.
In changing his position from that of Senator/candidate Obama, President Obama has, in my view, shaken his fist at the same God who created and defined marriage. It grieves me that our president would now affirm same-sex marriage, though I believe it grieves God even more.
The institution of marriage should not be defined by presidents or polls, governors or the media. The definition was set long ago and changing legislation or policy will never change God’s definition. This is a sad day for America. May God help us.”
HAHA! Graham doesn't realize the Earth is only 5000 years old!

Mitt Romney clashed with a state commission tasked with helping LGBT youth at risk for bullying and suicide throughout his term as Massachusetts governor over funding and its participation in a pride parade. He eventually abolished the group altogether.

And just to show he's not limited to gaybashing:
Romney’s spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom later confirmed that the photos were a key concern as well as the events inclusion of the transgender community.
“This year, what was brought to our attention was a press release that was not authorized by this office but which went out on state letterhead promoting a parade that was hosted by a crossdresser and celebrating, among other things, transgenderism,” Fehrnstrom said.
I admit that I didn't know all those details. So basically Romney has issues with gays and lesbians, but those issues are utterly dwarfed by his disdain, hatred, and disgust at the trans and queer communities. I would have never guessed I could hate this man more than I already did.

The weird thing about that to me is that some people are just born intersexed. It's undeniable. Even the guy who insists all homosexuality is a choice can't deny that some people are born with both male and female sexual characteristics. Not even getting into the people for whom it's 'just' psychological, there are physically intersexed people, and if your philosophy of gender simply can't deal with that fact, it's obviously a stupid one.

I'm honestly not sure how these people deal with intersex people. Or those that have sex chromosome setups other than XX or XY. Or those that are XX but naturally develop as a boy into a man or those that are XY but naturally develop as a girl into a woman. Or any other natural occurrence that doesn't fit nicely into their boxes.
Actually, I lied before. I know exactly how they deal with those people: They erase their existences so they can pretend those situations don't exist.

Why does he not remember the incident, but remembers that whether someone was gay or not was the 'last thing on his mind in the Sixties?'
And even if you take him at his word regarding the homophobic aspect of this incident, how much better does it make him look? Is he really trying to make himself look better by claiming he was just a regular old bully and not a homophobic bully? Really?

For fundamentalists who interpret the Bible literally as the Unchanging Word of God dictated by the Holy Spirit and merely written down by humans, there is no question on homosexuality.
For those people who are enlightened enough to say that although they feel the Bible was inspired by God, it was written by humans in a specific historical, social and cultural context and has to be seen as such.
And since our views of sexuality (as well as mental illness, miracles, "supernatural" events, witchcraft, etc...) have evolved since the Bible was written., it calls for an enlightened and modern interpretation of the Scriptures.
Or in other Fundamentalist terms: relativism, secularism and blasphemy...

The more I read of this interview, the less sense Romney's defense makes.
"The people involved didn't come out of the closet until years later," he noted. "The idea that this is something that was known by me ... is obviously absurd. I had no idea that this person might have been gay."
“I don’t remember that incident and I’ll tell you I certainly don’t believe that I, I can’t speak for other people of course, thought the fellow was homosexual," he said earlier in the interview.
WTF is that first sentence about? If 'the people involved didn't come out of the closet until years later,' doesn't that indicate some level of knowledge about the kid who Mitt attacked with the scissors?
And again - how does one not remember 'the incident' yet distinctly remember not thinking the victim was gay?

DONOHUE: Oh, it’s very simple. It’s absolutely very simple. I have a doctorate in sociology from NYU, and I know what the literature says. The literature is definitive. There is one gold standard, one gold standard for children. That is: there is no substitute for a marriage between a man and a woman.
...
Donohue might want to revisit sociology before he makes such grandiose claims. Not a single study has compared married opposite-sex couples to married same-sex couples and found a difference in their parenting ability. Any claim otherwise is a distortion of the research, not a “gold standard.”
Donohue needs a refresher course in his doctorate subject.

The more I read of this interview, the less sense Romney's defense makes.
Especially since it wasn't about how long the victim's hair was, but that it was "bleached-blond hair that draped over one eye".

I think he is referring to the "principle" that it takes a man and woman to make children. Needless to say that does not mean raise children, so he should be against all single parenting as well as gay parenting, infertile couples being married (except God makes that an exception), artificial insemination and surrogate mothering; and of course we know about contraception.
People like Donohue make me think bad things about the Catholic religion and he makes it hard for decent Catholics to participate in debates like this.

Sorry folks, we still have to put up with Michele Bachmann:
Bachmann withdraws Swiss Citizenship
Rep. Michele Bachmann, a Minnesota Republican and former presidential candidate, announced Thursday that she was withdrawing her dual Swiss citizenship, which Politico first disclosed earlier this week.
In a statement, Bachmann said she did not want to leave the impression that she was uncommitted to the United States.
Today I sent a letter to the Swiss Consulate requesting withdrawal of my dual Swiss citizenship, which was conferred upon me by operation of Swiss law when I married my husband in 1978. I took this action because I want to make it perfectly clear: I was born in America and I am a proud American citizen. I am, and always have been, 100 percent committed to our United States Constitution and the United States of America. As the daughter of an Air Force veteran, stepdaughter of an Army veteran and sister of a Navy veteran, I am proud of my allegiance to the greatest nation the world has ever known.

Girl Scouts under scrutiny from Catholic bishops
Long a lightning rod for conservative criticism, the Girl Scouts of the USA are now facing their highest-level challenge yet: An official inquiry by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
At issue are concerns about program materials that some Catholics find offensive, as well as assertions that the Scouts associate with other groups espousing stances that conflict with church teaching. The Scouts, who have numerous parish-sponsored troops, deny many of the claims and defend their alliances.
The inquiry coincides with the Scouts' 100th anniversary celebrations and follows a chain of other controversies.
Yeah, because the Catholic's inquiries about problems with children have such a great track record. Don't they have some priest they need relocated?

U.S. drone kills 8 militants in Yemen
U.S. drone strikes killed eight Al-Qaeda militants gathered in a house in southern Yemen, tribal sources said Thursday, amid reports a Saudi mole had infiltrated the network and supplied information to the CIA.
The strikes took place around midnight Wednesday in the town of Jaar, an Al-Qaeda stronghold in Abyan province, a source in the town said.
“We heard three explosions rock the town,” the source said, adding that a “U.S. drone” carried out the strikes on a residence where the jihadists had been meeting in the dead of night.
“Eight militants were killed and their bodies were left in pieces,” the source told AFP as witnesses said parts of the two-storey building were completely destroyed.

I miss Reine here too, but the majority follow the loud ones and even Reine was very sensitive about any critique of her church. It's a hard line to navigate without offending and in person we do so by avoiding these topics altogether. Much of the reason we, or I anyway, are here is that we can have such discussions.
I'm very defensive against people trying to paint Catholics with negative broad brushes, but I'm sorry, I won't pull my punches against the official leadership of the Church. It was those backwards old men that in part drove me from the Church and I will not abide by them dragging it kicking and screaming back into the Dark Ages. If that offends some Catholics, well, tough.

Quick top-of-my-head about Romney: the only way he could not remember assualting a fellow student with scissors is if he blocked it out of his memory. That would imply feeling guilty about the incident, which his comments about the incident don't indicate.

It's going to get harder for the RWNM to push the "Obama is elite and out of touch" meme after this, I think. Although at least one commenter at some site said, 'well, at least I know WHERE Romney went to school!' as if Obama's personal history has somehow been shrouded from media scrutiny. I know more about his early life than I do about my mother's.

I don't think Romney has much of a conscience.
That conclusion is just based on what I've read of his prior actions, so I may be completely out to lunch.

I wouldn't want to speak on her behalf but I found her quite tolerant of Catholic criticism, she had some herself. I recall befriending her on the old LGF in a debate about when PZ Myers desecrated a communion wafer. She's a good egg.
Yes, but I still remember having my ears burned by her when I was critical of Catholic hospitals, often being the only regional hospitals, wanting to impose their doctrines on all those who depended on them. As I recall, I said they were not charities and took government money, and charged the same fees as any other, yet wanted to operate outside the secular laws.

Adam Kokesh has gone 'round the bend. Even the Paulbots don't want him.
In his video program called Adam vs. The Man this week former New Mexico Congressional candidate Adam Kokesh read a letter from an unnamed young man from Mississippi who brings up the idea of assassinating Republican front-runner Mitt Romney to help Ron Paul get the presidential nomination and to stop what he says is an inevitable war with Iran.
Kokesh in the video stresses that he's not endorsing the idea , but says, "I cannot deny that the thought hasn't crossed my mind as well as so many other libertarians and Ron Paul supporters of late."
He then proceeds into a lengthy monologue in which he justifies his conclusion that violence against Romney wouldn't be a good thing.
He ends the video saying, "Whatever you do, please, please, please, don't forward this video to the Secret Service."

Yes, that nasty, lesbianism-inducing mystery organization called The Girl Scouts will finally come under scrutiny by the Holy See:
Earlier this year, legislators in Indiana and Alaska publicly called the Scouts into question, and the organization was berated in a series aired by a Catholic broadcast network. Last year, the Scouts angered some conservatives by accepting into a Colorado troop a 7-year-old transgender child who was born a boy but was being raised as a girl.[...]
The new inquiry will be conducted by the bishops' Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth. It will look into the Scouts' "possible problematic relationships with other organizations" and various "problematic" program materials, according to a letter sent by the committee chairman, Bishop Kevin Rhoades of Fort Wayne, Ind., to his fellow bishops.
[...]
Girl Scout controversies surfaced recently in two state legislatures.
In Indiana, Rep. Bob Morris wrote to his colleagues depicting the Girl Scouts as a radical group that promotes abortions and homosexuality. He later apologized for "reactionary and inflammatory" comments, but stood by his contention that the Scouts have links with Planned Parenthood. In Alaska, Rep. Wes Keller — before deciding whether to support a resolution honoring the Girl Scouts — said he needed to investigate information "floating around the Internet" about the alleged Planned Parenthood link. Keller later said he was convinced the rumors were baseless; the resolution passed unanimously.

Hurling truth against falsehood
Today we have the global media network, main stream media, corporate oligarchies and capitalist free markets economies. All perceive a threat by the advent of Islam. We have no conclusive proof of who committed 9/11, why the towers were ‘pulled’, why airplanes were modified, why steel melted at 800 degrees not 2,300 or the relevance of 'Operation Northwoods’. The pleas of the families for an inquiry are denied and the evidence has in the majority, been completely destroyed. However, any straw poll will almost entirely state it was the Moozlims.

Archaeologists Claim They're One Step Closer to Proving the Bible True
A bundle of new discoveries on a rocky hill in Israel may upend the community of Biblical historians struggling to understand Judah in the time of King David. Professor Yosef Garfinkel from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a team of archaeologists have been excavating the ancient city of Khirbet Qeiyafa, and have recently unearthed a trio of cultic shrines that date back to the time of King David. Along with stone and metal tools, pottery and art objects, the site provides the first evidence of a cult at the time of King David. Based on the archaeologists' analysis, the religious practices of the cult also match the traditions described in the Bible.
[...]
Fundamentalists (both Christian and Jewish) have jumped on Garfinkel's claims as some sort of great vindication of their literalist beliefs in the OT/Torah.
Only problem is, the actual archeological finds don't support the fundamentalists and even probably illustrates how polytheistic the region really was ca. 1000BCE.
One place to start for a more critical analysis:

[...] This son of Satan has called judgment upon the greatest nation in history. Remember: Woe to a nation who call evil good and good evil…. Also, we who remain silent will be called cowards. See Rev. 21:8. I will not stand before God on Judgment Day and be called a coward. I will speak out against the evil that has/is destroying my beloved country. Men fought and died for this? Our forefathers would be horrified if they knew what one man had done to destroy the Constitution in just 3 years and not one person in Congress dared to say a word or stop him. [...]

Inevitably the word "cult" throws lots of readers for a loop.
But, when the article is quoting from one of the historians or archeologists, I take the meaning of words to be those used in academia and not in popular thought.
When speaking of ancient Israel/Canaan, one can speak for example of the Yahweh cult, which was the influx of practitioners who referred to the head of the pantheon not by the really old name of "El" but by the new name.

The typology is pretty universal -- ideologically twisted dictatorship = bad, McNaughtony art and suppression/destruction of other cultural forms. You can always count on right wing bloggers for moral relativism. Oh, this is exactly like blah blah. The fact of the matter is the other guys who took part in Romney's crazy mob felt guilty and the one felt guilty enough to apologize to the guy years later. It wasn't a mere prank. A mere prank is what my hallmates did when they messed around with our cushions and spelt out their names in tortillas. This was bullying and harassment on Romney's part.

6015 years. Based on that 4004 BC date they pulled out of their asses in the middle ages.
It wasn't the Middle Ages, it was the seventeenth century. And it wasn't exactly pulled out of asses, it was a rational attempt, given the history and science of the day, to figure out exactly when all of this stuff in the Bible was happening.
That it is being clung to now, by people who have much better information available to them, but can't fathom faith that coexists with rationality, is not exactly Bishop Ussher's fault.

I had my roughest patch in middle school. Just a tough time to be a quiet kid who kept to himself and didn't adjust well to how friendships change during that time. I was never physically tormented probably because I've never been a small guy but I was picked on sure mostly for how I talked and just being unconventional. I was really shy through high school and probably my first two-three years of community college. When I transferred to GMU, I got better and as tacky as it sounds, turning 21 helped because I do like barhopping and making talk there over a drink. But I think I grew less afraid naturally too. This is one of the funniest things I've read in days. One of the girls from Jersey Shore ripped into Bristol Palin for criticizing President Obama:
JWoww Slams Bristol Palin: "Keep Your Uneducated, Ignorant Mouth Shut"
Jenni "JWoww" Farley has never been shy about voicing her opinions, as Bristol Palin learned firsthand Thursday.
After Palin, 21, wrote a heated blog post about President Barack Obama's recent support of same-sex marriage, Farley, 26, dissed the politician's daughter via Twitter.
"Bristol should keep her uneducated, ignorant mouth shut. If you're living in the past you wouldn't have a kid without marriage. Hypocrite. It's 2012!" Farley wrote. "My best friend will get married one day and not just have civil union with his man. Stop hating people."
I never thought I'd see the day when someone from Jersey Shore was right about something. Haha.

Me, too! The librarian told me I should go for something in the drama dept. because I read so many plays, but I was too shy. In sumtotal, I had more conversations with various librarians than any teacher.
Librarians, I think, are often the angels of a school that keep many of us alive. Well, them and the bartenders at the airport lounge a half-mile from the school that didn't check ID"s as long as you had cash and could hold your liquor
I did some acting but was too self conscious in those days to be any good at it. But I did find that working the lights for plays and programs was a hell of a lot of fun and so did that as often as possible in Jr & Sr High.
It's funny, public speaking never bugged me - I did forensics, gave speeches at left wing/peace-nik rallies all through high school, lectured a congressman about what was going on in Nicaragua, & wrote for the newspaper. But put me in a play? Fell all apart,

I think the first time I had to do a serious public speaking thing in school, my leg was shaking- I was that nervous. I still loathe doing it. I had to do a presentation in Spanish for Spanish last fall and I just couldn't do it. Professora says you can come to my office and do it there. That lady had no idea how grateful I was. And then the next semester, I was able to find a partner to do a presentation with and power-point helped a bit. The worst experience I've ever had public speaking though? Had to have been doing a scene out of Hamlet for a Shakespeare course. I had signed up for the course with the belief we'd just be reading the plays not having to act them out. My group was set to act on the last day of the class. The same week the big paper for the course was due. Well the previous night I had accidentally erased the paper and had to rewrite the essay. So I had to email the professor to get an extension. I got one but with the caveat my grade would be lowered for the paper being late. We had also been practicing for the play. None of us had ever acted before. And I had been working on my paper all night before I got to the class so I had completely forgotten any of the lines from Hamlet. None of my fellow actors were ready too. So, it began and I completely blacked, forgot my line- "Aw Damnit", class bursts in to laughter. Whole thing ended up being hilarious for both class and professor, who showed some comedic troop's silly interpretations of Shakespeare. Ending up getting a B in the course. First semester of an English minor. That was an interesting semester.

Romney Friend Stu White Says Campaign Wants Him to Counter Prank Accusations
Email60Smaller FontTextLarger Text|Print
ABC News’ Emily Friedman, Emily Stanitz and Steven Portnoy report:
One of Mitt Romney’s closest friends and a high school classmate has been asked by the Romney campaign to come out and offer “supporting remarks” in defense of the candidate following a Washington Post article that described pranks at the Cranbrook School in the 1960s that focused on a student who was “presumed” to be gay. Romney has denied that the pranks were targeted.
Romney’s older brother Scott called White, asking him to act as a surrogate for Romney on their high school years.
White, in an interview with ABC News, said that he is “still debating” whether he will help the campaign, remarking, “It’s been a long time since we’ve been pals.” While the Post reports White as having “long been bothered” by the haircutting incident,” he told ABC News he was not present for the prank, in which Romney is said to have forcefully cut a student’s long hair and was not aware of it until this year when he was contacted by the Washington Post.
According to White, he knows of several other classmates that have also been approached by the campaign to counter the article. White declined to name the fellow classmates.
Romney often mentions White on the campaign trail as the friend who threw the party where Romney met his wife Ann, whom he has now been married to for more than 43 years.
One former classmate and old friend of Romney’s – who refused to be identified by name – said there are “a lot of guys” who went to Cranbrook who have “really negative memories” of Romney’s behavior in the dorms, behavior this classmate describes as “like Lord of the Flies.”
The classmate believes Romney is lying when he claims to not remember it.
“It makes these fellows [who have owned up to it] very remorseful. For [Romney] not to remember it? It doesn’t ring true. How could the fellow with the scissors forget it?” the former classmate said.

I had an untrimmed beard and had just gotten my hair cut short that day and a friend told me I looked like someone off of a "10 Most Wanted" poster.
I got told similar- "You look like the reason why Megan's law was passed." I kept what I called a beard log, writing down what people said. I think my favorite was the guy at the campus burger place who said I looked like a lumberjack.

This is why I said earlier:
[Embedded content] People like Dan Riehl love Mitt Romney in his bully persona. It's who they are.
Exactly, it was the mid 60s so Romney was symbolically striking a blow against the counterculture by demanding that everyone look the same.
Furthermore the person he assaulted was a "hippie fag" so that gets Riehl and his crowd really hard, after months of feeling flaccid about Romney.

I can't believe that! Not on a school trip? Go, go soon! The gorillas and gibbons are amazing. Watch out for the seagulls!
I remember when the worst you had to worry about at the Landmark Cafe were the pigeons. But between the Peregrine Falcons and the seagulls, the pigeons are gone from that plaza. And the seagulls that have replaced them are less numerous but far more aggressive and much, much louder.

If we could keep Rowan Williams +++ in office, as much as I disagree with him our own church political issues (even as I love his theological writings) I'd be tempted to agree. But any solution that puts it into one person's hands will fail badly in the ME. Too many groups to agree on who that one is (and my church is one of the many at fault there...)

That's funny, because Williams has always struck me as a weak-willed buffoon. His church is dying in the UK.
It's funny - he tries to be everything to everyone in his personal life but his theological writing is very crisp & clear. Not easy though, so perhaps that's a part of it.
But the COE must be disestablished if it is to survive. A church can only live if:
1) it is made up only of people who want to be there &
2) it is more than just a social club for those who do arrive.
The combination of these are why mainline protestant churches are failing. God aweful as they are, the mega-churches do a better job of pretending they care about more than their congregant's wallets.
I am also coming to the belief that churches. all of them, even my own, need to lose their tax exempt status in our nation. It would help reset the power imbalance that currently exists between the religious & secular in our nation. That imbalance strikes at the heart of the separation of church and state our founders wisely saw as a critical necessity to our national survival.

Yeah, and so is the Catholic Church in Europe.
re: #557 William Barnett-Lewis
Well it has to be a centralized, non involved church.
Which eliminates the Egyptian Coptic, Ethiopian, Orthodox, and Catholic Churches.
Leaves very, very few options, unless you want to go with the route of the Hashemites, and but one of the heads of state of one of the nations with weak separation of Church and State who are Protestant.
Which leaves the UK, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland.

Funny when I had my hair at its longest and my beard at its thickest, a guy at the local Irish pub said "Sir, I don't know how you'll take this but you look like an IRA man." I laughed and finished my Guinness. Thing that made it funny was a friend had recently said I looked like Luke Kelly from the Irish folk band the Dubliners.
I've been told I look like Jerry Garcia (by a drunk guy sitting on his front porch in Lincoln, Neb.), and either Karl Marx or Father Christmas here in China. It's the white hair and beard. If you've seen David Grisman lately, I bear a fair resemblance to him, too. Unfortunately, I can't play guitar worth a damn, my attempts to devise a new social order have failed, and I've touched a mandolin only once. The elves and reindeer are mumbling about Occupy North Pole, so I may be late next season.
