Breitbart Blogger Dan Riehl: A High School Bully and Proud of It

One of Romney’s chosen bloggers gleefully brags about bullying
Wingnuts • Views: 30,033

The heirs of Andrew at breitbart.com have managed to turn the site into a total laughing stock; if you were ever curious what a rabidly partisan website utterly divorced from logic, reality, and simple decency looks like, here you go: Breitbart.com.

The Breitbrats are coming unglued today about the Washington Post story on Mitt Romney’s anti-gay high school bullying. Current headlines:

  • ROMNEY BULLYING OBAMA BY 7 POINTS IN POLL
  • WASHINGTON POST ROMNEY ‘BULLYING’ PROFILE CONTRADICTED BY… AUTOMOBILE MAGAZINE
  • 50 YEAR-OLD BULLY BARACK OBAMA TARGETS PRIVATE CITIZEN
  • NPR CITES BULLY DAN SAVAGE IN REPORT ON ROMNEY BULLYING
  • FAMILY DENOUNCES WAPO FOR EXPLOITING LAUBER
  • DOES WAPO KNOW OBAMA SHOVED A LITTLE GIRL?
  • WASHINGTON POST ROMNEY HIT PIECE IMPLODES
  • FLASHBACK: OBAMA’S SORDID HIGH SCHOOL PAST
  • CORRECTION REQUEST: WASHINGTON POST USES FALSEHOOD IN ROMNEY HIT PIECE

On and on it goes. And the comments for these posts are full of extreme hatred, of course.

So since they’re working so hard (and failing so hard) to exonerate Mitt Romney of those bullying allegations, how do the Breitbrats themselves feel about bullying? They must think it’s bad, since they’re trying to turn it around and use the accusation against Obama, right?

For the answer to that question, let’s turn to the always effervescent Dan Riehl, one of the Breitbrat crew who was recently invited to a meeting with Mitt Romney.

Here’s a series of tweets posted last night by Riehl on the subject of bullying, something he apparently knows quite a bit about:

That’s right — this is the kind of blogger Mitt Romney wants on his side.

UPDATE at 5/11/12 12:03:10 pm

Riehl responds in his usual way:

I really cannot fathom how a supposedly grown adult could ever seriously make those kinds of comments. It's a mindset that is completely foreign to me. How can you be proud of taunting, teasing, and abusing other people that feel harmed by it? How can picking on the weak be a badge of honour? What kind of twisted and stunted growth can lead to this? I mean really, when many eight year-olds can demonstrate stronger morals and understandings of right and wrong than you it means you have some serious issues. And he tosses in some misogyny as a bonus. o/

Yeah, you can say what you will about Breitbart (And there's a lot to say about him), but he at least knew how to run his stuff. If anyone remaining has even half the business sense Andrew did, they aren't being allowed to demonstrate it.

The First Amendment Doesn’t Apply at Liberty University

Demonstrations, Petitions and Picketing
Student participation in on-campus demonstrations, petitions or picketing is prohibited unless approved by Liberty University administration. The administration may also prohibit or restrict student participation in demonstrations, petitions or picketing at places other than on campus, where such participation would contradict or otherwise compromise the principles and policies of Liberty University.

Distribution of Literature
Distribution of literature is permitted on campus only when prior administrative approval has been secured from the Student Life Office or University Services. Distribution of literature in the residence halls requires written approval from the Residence Life Office.

No R-Rated Movies, Un-Godly Music, or Immodest Posters at Liberty University

Entertainment
Liberty University encourages students to abstain from any form of entertainment that would compromise their testimony to the world and their relationship to God.

Movies
Liberty University has always attempted to maintain a conservative standard in its approach to the arts and entertainment. Current policy for movie viewing allows for attendance at theaters but prohibits viewing of movies rated "R", "NC-17" or "X". The penalty for viewing such movies is a reprimandable offense. It should be remembered that in no way is Liberty University endorsing the movie industry's rating system as appropriate or Christ-honoring. In addition, the Division of Student Affairs will continue teaching guidelines and principles to students related to all forms of entertainment. This would mean that many "PG-13" and some "PG" movies, although not prohibited by policy, may also be inappropriate.

Music
Philosophy, tastes and personal convictions concerning music vary greatly among our students. Liberty University endeavors to teach discernment in evaluating and selecting all music. It is Liberty's desire to maintain a music standard that is conducive to a healthy Christian atmosphere. Students should learn to choose music that honors the Savior and is in harmony with God's word. Music that is offensive (i.e., lewd lyrics, anti-Christian messages, etc.) to Liberty's Christian stand is not permitted.

No Dancing or Kissing at Liberty University

Respect While Dating/Social Behavior
All students are asked to display mature Christian behavior in social interaction. Proper respect must be shown to all individuals at all times. Harassment of any type will not be tolerated. Handholding is the only appropriate form of personal contact. Improper personal contact or other forms of public display are considered in poor taste. After dusk, students should not be alone with an individual of the opposite sex in any unlighted area such as the ball fields, parking lots, parked cars, ravine or other wooded areas, etc. This is considered improper social behavior.

Restricted Areas on Campus
A student may not be alone with an individual of the opposite sex in the academic classrooms or offices. Students may not enter the residence halls of the opposite sex. After dusk, a student may not be alone with an individual of the opposite sex in any unlighted area, such as the ball fields, the ravine, parking lots, parked cars, etc.

It means they're only allowed Christian music/movies/books/etc. All that secular entertainment will only hurt their testimony. Or something.

And some of their students take that super seriously. I looked on their FB page after Romney was announced as a speaker there to see their reactions, and there was mention of a theater production of Peter Pan on the Liberty campus. Someone actually protested Peter Pan because it wasn't Christian and had magic in it.

All this confirms is, newsrooms are full of candy asses who often had their asses kicked in high school

Ohhhh fuck you Dan. Fuck you and the horse you rode in on.

I was TORMENTED by bullies at the age of 13 and I'm not talking just about at school. They targeted me at school, in the neighborhood even in my own home (via crank calling). They harassed not only me but my parents as well.

Here are several of the more unfortunate incidents I was a victim of:

- Hung, by my belt, off a fencepost in the middle of schoolyard during recess in such a way that I could NOT get off. I was a public laughingstock for I don't how many minutes until someone helped me off the post.

- Shoved down a flight stairs while recovering from a broken leg AND ON CRUTCHES!

- Violently "wedgied" in front of school mates in the hallways at the end of the day

I stopped taking the bus to school for fear of what would happen if I did. My parents withdrew me for the final two weeks of Eight grade because they did not feel I was safe there.

I nearly TOOK MY OWN LIFE because of this.

This was not teasing, it was not ribbing and it was NOT normal. It was vicious hurtful abuse and assaults that I did not DESERVE.

The only reason, the ONLY reason they went after me is because of my size. I just happen to be on the small side.

I still bear the emotional scars of what happened to me but you know what?

I'm doing ok now. I've got two degrees, a decent job, a wonderful wife and a loving family. I'm proud of who I am and I am proud I didn't sink to the level of those who were harassing me.

And if that makes me a candy ass or a pussy Dan, then I guess I'm one of the biggest candy asses you'll ever meet. And you know what? That doesn't bother me ONE DAMNED BIT.

People like you will never understand. Don't act like you do.

My son's youth group here in ultra-conservative suburban Oklahoma sends a delegation each year to meet with our legislators in DC to discuss an issue chosen by the group. 2 summers ago it was human trafficking, last summer it was...you guessed it, bullying. We're talking religious conservative kids from deep-GOP Oklahoma. If this story gets the reporting it deserves, it's gonna hurt Romney a lot. Decent human beings are repulsed by bullies, and there's always more victims and bystanders than bullies.

Witchcraft and Abortion on Par with Sexual Assault and Felony Conviction at Liberty University

30 Reprimands + $500.00 Fine + 30 hours Disciplinary Community Service + possible Administrative Withdrawal. NOTE: For each accumulation of six (6) or more reprimands after 30, an additional $150 fine will be assessed.

Abortion
Assault/sexual assault (minimum two (2) semesters out)
Commission/conviction of any felony
Failure of three (3) Christian/Community Services without reconciliation
Illegal drugs-association/possession, use/distribution (minimum two semesters out)
Involvement with witchcraft, séances or other satanic or demonic activity
Life-threatening behavior or language to others or oneself (immediate removal/exclusion from campus and a minimum of two semesters out)
Non-participation/disruption/non-compliance (possible removal/exclusion from campus)
Possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages
Spending the night with a person of the opposite sex
Stealing or possession of stolen property (plus financial restitution; minimum two semesters out)
Two or more individuals of the opposite sex together in motel room
Unauthorized possession/use of weapons

Liberty doesn’t even bother prohibiting same-sex heavy petting because no one at Liberty is gay (it’s the higher ed equivalent of Iran, which also has no gay people). A quick visit to Craigslist Lynchburg suggests otherwise, but that’s a different story.

Well, if it relates to the blog post there's probably a decent case for fair use. But, as a general rule, lack of knowing who holds the copyright on something is no protection from unprotected infringement, nor is the fact that it may be posted all over the place. If you don't feel you have a fair use argument for including such an image, then you shouldn't use it.

So a student couldn't, in theory, spend the night with a sibling or relative of the opposite gender without getting fined. WTF.

Unless Liberty has motels on campus, how is this any of their business? They're regulating a student's behavior off campus. WTF.

That's covered by a Student Code of Conduct. By being a student you are de facto representing the universtiy to some degree. So they do have an interest in your activities, even off campus, since those activities reflect on them. (e.g. Students riot or protest off-campus about something - that does affect the university itself due to association.)

And as a private school Liberty University has a great deal of leeway in setting the rules. The attending student has essentially (and probably literally) signed a contract with the school regarding expected behaviors. And Liberty probably makes sure that these are expected to apply off campus as well.

Don't like it, don't go there.

A lot (most?) universities have such a Student Code of Conduct. Though I doubt that they are anywhere near this restrictive in most cases.

re: #63 Interesting Times

Have an OT question for you, since you've taken Digital Media courses - pictures are supposed to be "automatically" copyrighted upon creation, but if there's no way of figuring out the original copyright holder and the image is posted all over the place (e.g. lolcat pics), can you still get in hot water for using it? (say, to accompany a blog post)

I'd echo what Simply Sarah said and add the caveat that fair use isn't clearly defined, so it can be a slippery slope. You're better off either purchasing inexpensive stock photography (many sites offer "editorial" versions of more expensive photos/artwork) or looking for images that are CC (Creative Commons) licensed (try Flickr), or ones that have been released into the public domain.

If you email me and tell me what kind of images you think you may use, I can give you some URLs. There are also sites like the morgueFile.

Oh, you can also try Wikimedia Commons (when on Wikipedia, if you pay attention to the photos, you'll see some are public domain).

Brookhaven National Lab Solves Hydrogen Fuel Puzzle With Nanotech

A team of researchers at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, has opened the door to a future of clean, cheap hydrogen fuel by ditching a popular platinum catalyst in favor of one based on two low cost alternatives, nickel and molybdenum.

Until now, the manufacture of hydrogen gas has faced a huge and somewhat ironic obstacle: Though hydrogen gas is produced from a chemical reaction in plain water, one of the cheapest and most abundant substances imaginable, the most efficient catalyst for generating that reaction is platinum - which currently weighs in at a hefty $50,000 per kilogram price tag, and rising.

In contrast, nickel costs only $20 per kilogram. Molybdenum, a silvery gray metal, costs $32.

If successfully commercialized, the new catalyst could have a powerful impact on the price of hydrogen, leading the way to a new generation of emission-free hydrogen-fueled vehicles as well as hydrogen fuel cells for many other uses.

From what I can tell, when Charles uses still images, he either adds a byline that links directly to the source itself, or it's done in a way where it's obvious where the photo came from, such as a still image from a Gallup poll or whatever.

re: #105 Interesting Times

Quick example on using stuff you grab from the web: My profile pic contains artwork form two separate illustrations that I've paid licensing fees for, the rest is mine. Anyone using that image without permission would be violating no less than three copyrights, therefore if I discovered someone using it, I could make a claim and also notify the companies from which I licensed the other two images.

I don't have the means to keep a a lawyer on retainer, but the companies in question surely do since dealing in licensed images is their business. There are also services that will help find instances of misuse.

All you can do is exercise as much judgment as possible. I've actually been licensing photos recently from Shutterstock, and for front page posts, I never just take a photo from the wire services and repost it. AP and Reuters have made it pretty clear that they're not happy about blogs doing that, and although they've never contacted me about it I have no desire to be the test case.

Lots of right wing blogs seem to have no hesitation at all about wholesale copyright violation, when it comes to images. Breitbart.com is definitely one - I seriously doubt they're purchasing the rights for all those photos they use.

I think if you can reasonably argue that a post makes a critical point about a photo, then fair use would apply. In other words, just using a photo to illustrate a post, without commenting on it, is probably NOT fair use.

But a classic example is that "enhanced" photo of smoke rising over Lebanon that I broke -- that's very clearly a case of fair use to publish the photo, even though Reuters holds the copyright, because the whole point of re-publishing it is to criticize it.

Most cases won't be this clear or obvious, though.

Ohhh fuck you Dan.

Bullies tormented me and PLL, too. Dan Riel is an utter ass if he thinks proudly calling himself a bully is a good thing, and an utter fool for not realizing how its going to bite him in the ass.
