RNC Chairman Reince Priebus Makes the GOP’s Reactionary Agenda Very Clear

And refuses to denounce Rand Paul’s bigoted “joke”
Politics • Views: 34,327

Reince Priebus says the official position of the Republican Party is that gays and lesbians should not be allowed to marry, they do not see it as a civil rights issue, and what’s more, they want a constitutional amendment to enshrine their bigotry as the law of the land, forever and ever, amen.

And he doesn’t believe the polls that show Americans increasingly supporting gay marriage.

The chairman of the Republican National Committee makes it very clear: the GOP is the party of reactionary, reality-denying anti-gay bigotry.

Then, just to really bring it home, Priebus refuses to denounce Rand Paul’s “joke” that he “didn’t think Obama’s views on marriage could get any gayer.”

I want these bigots to show me where we have amended the Constitution to deny equality to people. That's all I ask.

It is not a CIvil Rights issue to them, it is a clear-cut issue of morality.

To them, the very existence of gay marriage on American soil is a threat to our special relationship with God, and hence, our exceptional standing as One Nation Under God.

In a strange twist Tony Perkins of the FRC denounced that joke:

And again. If you have to amend the Constitution to ban gay marriage that means it currently allows for gay marriage. It's an insult to this country and the Constitution to even suggest an amendment that would limit the rights of a group of people.

Ranceman also knows that if he dared take Randyman to task about his gay quips, the issue would quicly be twisted into "Rance Priebus loves gays, supports Obama!"

But this is the climate these fellow have created. They now have to wallow in it.

Something that needs to be repeated - the anti-gay sentiment of Christian groups has only been predominant since the rise of Protestantism. In fact, between the 10th and 16th centuries, churches were regularly performing same-sex marriages - including "mainstream" Catholic parishes.

The time when same-sex marriage was a Christian rite

At St. John Lateran in Rome (traditionally the Pope’s parish church) in 1578, as many as thirteen same-gender couples were joined during a high Mass and with the cooperation of the Vatican clergy, “taking communion together, using the same nuptial Scripture, after which they slept and ate together” according to a contemporary report. Another woman to woman union is recorded in Dalmatia in the 18th century.

To be sure, it was a pretty crazy idea to have a monetary union without a fiscal union. Neither the Eurozone nor the EU have a lender-of-last-resort, ffs.

re: #32 Targetpractice

Seriously don't think the EU is long for this world. The adoption of the Euro basically shackled countries that otherwise might have been able to handle the economic downturn well to the German austerity regime.

Personally, I hope that the Eurozone stays in business.

In the modern world only very large national entities, like the U.S., China and India can retain power over their economies. Their markets are too large to ignore. Businesses have to play by the nation's rules if they want to do business there.

Anything smaller and it's the global economic system that has the upper hand. It can tell nations to piss up a rope, stop doing business there and watch the nation's economy get into deep, deep trouble.

What the people that created the Eurozone forgot is that some member nations have weaker economies than others, and that these nations need to be supported in hard times. Just like the 'have not' provinces here in Canada or most of the Southern states in America. This is necessary because problems in weaker economies tend to spread.

Once the people behind the Eurozone remember this, and forget this idiotic 'austerity' shit, Europe should do okay.

57 Stormageddon, Dark Lord of All  Sun, May 13, 2012 11:31:28am

It's simple really, the Republicans are in the wrong generation of a cultural shift. While there might be some areas in the South East that anti gay bigotry survives in the under 35 crowd, the vast majority of younger men and women simply don't see the issue or problem.

I know this is just one person, but I have a friend who is a super conservative hyper christian Republican (now in her mid 20s), and even at her most strident time, she didn't care if someone was gay/straight/bi/Transgendered. And while she doesn't approve of Gay Marriage, it's also not something she thinks is something that affects her, so it's not her business.

It's an interesting clash of culture going on, where someone has been raised a certain way, and while some of that cultural conditioning remains from her upbringing, she also has been so exposed to other cultures that she really doesn't view the GBLT as dangerous or an issue.

I don't mind if someone doesn't approve of anyone elses life style and her and I have some pretty interesting debates on various issues, But like most of the younger generation, they have their views, but they don't feel a pressing need to force other people to live them.

And that's one of the (many) reasons the Republican party is going to find itself increasingly marginalized over time.

83 Mich-again  Sun, May 13, 2012 12:05:17pm

Priebus and the GOP/Tea Party have abandoned any semblance of trying to appeal to the center and have decided instead to go all-in with a message of ignorance, racism and homophobia to attract as many voters from the far right as possible. Their strategy is to motivate through hate. And yes, it will make the far right more excited to have a candidate hell bent on punishing their political opponents than one who wants to plot a course for the good of all. Most of the politically active Christians identify more with the God of wrath in the Old Testament ordering death and destruction on the evildoers than they identify with the New Testament message of inclusion, forgiveness and being humble. Jesus was a long-haired liberal socialist.

I am highly skeptical this strategy to abandon the middle and focus on the fringe will work out for them. Presidential elections are won or lost in the middle.

So for the months leading up to the election we can look for more and more hate and divisiveness from the GOP. Once you abandon the middle, you have to pull harder and harder from the far edges to make up for what you lost.

re: #42 RadicalModerate

Something that needs to be repeated - the anti-gay sentiment of Christian groups has only been predominant since the rise of Protestantism. In fact, between the 10th and 16th centuries, churches were regularly performing same-sex marriages - including "mainstream" Catholic parishes.

The time when same-sex marriage was a Christian rite

We had this discussion several times: iot is based on rather sloppy research, and also based on notions of (homo)sexuality that have changed over time.

Which is actually sort of the point: views on (homo)sexuality, mental illness, (super)natural phenomena, slavery, minority and women's rights, etc.have changed over the ages.
If religions wish to keep them as they were in the day of the Prophets, let them do so within their religion, but the rules that govern free, secular society are expected to, well, evolve

Whatever omnipotent God there might be, it is unlikely he needs the help of the Republican National Committee.

Arrogant little shit.

So true. What kind of God is it that needs humans to watch his back.

I can't help but believe that the God the right believes in is more upset with the GOP than happy with them about the way they are distorting his word to support their agenda.

The GOP will insist that God's word is their agenda...

re: #95 Mich-again

It's part of the fundamentally pagan mindset that permeates much of the GOP. How can you "kill" God? Yet homosexuals are a danger to Him.

What kind of God is it that needs humans to watch his back.

The kind of God that's propped up by a weak, pathetic excuse for religious faith.

You'd think that the entity which supposedly created the entire universe would be made of sterner stuff than that, but no. Apparently, things like LGBT equality are a threat to its existence.

re: #65 Be Zorch, Daddio

I can't figure out how to say this guy's name, so I'll just call him "Rancid" from now on.

I go for "Rinsed Prius". As 000G and others have said, if you take out all of the vowels from his first and last name, you have his occupation precisely: RNC PR BS.

Man, his folks were clairvoyant...

If there is truly a God it wont matter how much or how many times they insist they wont be able to convince the entity that wrote the words.

Christine Todd Whitman: Most Republican Women Support Abortion Rights

The wingnuts don't give a shit about what Whitman says, other than confirming that she's a RINO in their eyes for not completely gutting the EPA when she was running it under W's Administration.

re: #109 ArthurSlugworth

Addendum: Also, I still fault Whitman for the EPA's response at Ground Zero after 9/11. How many emergency personnel, demolition workers, and SAR volunteers that didn't use proper protective gear have gotten/will get sick or die of respiratory illnesses like mesothelioma or lung cancer because she jumped the gun and said Manhattan's air was safe so soon after the attack?

In the interest of staying informed, I know I should watch this. I also know that it's highly likely that David Gregory didn't challenge Preibus on anything (such as altering the Constitution to endorse homophobia.)

So in the the interest of not putting my fist through my expensive iMac, I'll avoid this video for the time being.

113 Patricia Kayden  Mon, May 14, 2012 6:32:06am

It's good that Reince Priebus and the Repubs are making it very clear about their feelings on marriage equality/gay rights. Makes it easier for voters depending on their stance on that issue.

Repubs are on the losing side of history. Not sure why they're being so hard core about homosexuality. Even if Romney wins in November, the country is moving towards accepting same sex marriage/gay rights.

114 califleftyb  Mon, May 14, 2012 12:37:06pm

If you play Reince Priebus backwards it sounds like "suburban ire".
I've got a picture of him crossing the street barefoot!
