More GOP words of wisdom:
Scott Fitzgerald is a longtime Republican State Senator from Juneau, Wisconsin. Known as "Big Fitz," he's one of the politicians who's been most active in moving Governor Scott Walker's awful agenda through the legislature, and as a result he's facing a recall election. His opponent is 41-year-old Lori Compas, a freelance photographer and writer who hails from from Fort Atkinson. Understandably, Fitzgerald is not happy to be faced with losing his seat, but instead of fighting to prove he's worthy of continuing to represent the people of his district, he's spending his time being a whiny, sexist pig by insulting his Compas's motives for running.

Fitz, yes, but damaged. He'll have a real opponent next time with party money. The senate will change hands, though, with the open seat going Democratic. Fitz wlll go back to being minority leader until the folks back home see him for what he is.
More video of Scooter offering to turn Wisconsin into a Right To Exploit State to a billionaire and he'll need to go to another state to find work. Of course that's because he's lost so many jobs here with his anti-Wisconsin policies. The trustworthy polls (ie not from the parties) show it a dead heat,) Not even all the blood money from Citizens United has been able to lie enough to change that reality.

Walker's problem is that WI is lagging behind the bell curve in job growth since he took office. If they used the same logic and arguments they are employing to unseat Obama, the GOP wouldn't even back Walker.

Outside money soils Wisconsin politics
This historic recall election has seen unprecedented fundraising efforts; the amount of out-of-state contributions is staggering. Ahead of the May 8 primary, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel found that out-of-state contributions accounted for 57% of Walker's campaign funds and about 48% of former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk's funds. Out-of-state money accounted for 13% of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett's campaign funds. And this is only the beginning. With the recall election just a few weeks away and the Democratic challenger in place, the fundraising efforts and out-of-state cash flow will only intensify for both political parties in this race. (You ain't seen nothin' yet!)
Interlopers - those who do not live in Wisconsin and thus have no vote in Wisconsin - are using their big fat wallets to tell Wisconsin voters how to vote. And when they are not telling you how to vote, they are using their thick wallets to tear apart and trash a political opponent. They enjoy using their money to dirty up the race because they know you are listening and they want you to be poisoned against a candidate.

Ha! This is the best thing that George Lucas has done in years:
So what is George Lucas going to do with his property now that he's tired of his rich neighbors putting up a not-in-my-backyard stink? He wants to transform the property into low-income housing, naturally, ending their official statement with this zinger, "If everyone feels that housing is less impactful on the land, then we are hoping that people who need it the most will benefit."
He's working with the Marin Community Foundation to instead construct affordable housing for either low-income families or seniors living on small, fixed incomes. In order to smooth along the development, he's already given them all of the pricey technical studies and land surveys Lucasfilm spent years conducting. And we think that's just great. Because if there's one thing rich people will hate more than having movie magic made in their backyard, it's poor people moving in.

Evangelicals Unhappy With GOP’s Gay Marriage Strategy
Evangelicals and social conservatives are urging Republicans to make the fight against same-sex marriage an election-year priority and go after President Obama over his new-found support for the cause. So far, the GOP establishment is resisting.
Rick Santorum pushed Mitt Romney to use the issue to his advantage. “I think what you see is his is a very potent weapon if you will for Gov. Romney if he is willing to step up and take advantage of a president who is very much out of touch with the values of America,” the former presidential candidate said.
But the Republican establishment is singing a different tune, showing little interest in focusing on the issue, and instead fielding questions about it by pivoting to the economy. The result is a strategic divide over how to handle the issue of same sex marriage on the right, pitting politicians against the evangelical community as they negotiate their response to the president’s gay marriage position.

The best way to fix the economy is to reduce waste in the commodities government uses and to help businesses to be more profitable. Just lopping off heads and eliminating departments shifts costs around to others, and might even increase overall costs when you look at everything. For example, if the Government decides to not invest in a road project that will alleviate traffic jams, then it ends up hurting consumers and businesses because the stop and go traffic wastes their time and money.
And when the government reduces waste in commodities it uses it decreases the market costs for those supplies and that helps private enterprise be more profitable.

Paul Krugman's latest is worth a read:
...What did JPMorgan actually do? As far as we can tell, it used the market for derivatives — complex financial instruments — to make a huge bet on the safety of corporate debt, something like the bets that the insurer A.I.G. made on housing debt a few years ago. The key point is not that the bet went bad; it is that institutions playing a key role in the financial system have no business making such bets, least of all when those institutions are backed by taxpayer guarantees.
For the moment Mr. Dimon seems chastened, even admitting that maybe the proponents of stronger regulation have a point. It probably won’t last; I expect Wall Street to be back to its usual arrogance within weeks if not days.

So, I have been thinking about posting this video produced by a co-worker in India. I think she has made a very thought provoking video, but I am not sure how it will be received in the US. I have subscribed to get email for responses, so if you can give a response vs up or down ding, it would be appreciated.
I am not very well educated on the subject matter, and the feminist movement in India, however I do feel that the subject matter is important.

I am not very well educated on the subject matter, and the feminist movement in India,...
Neither am I, though I appreciate the work that has gone into this video.
Speaking of the video, it first struck me about materialism, then existentialism, or perhaps smoking. Finally the gay theme was thrown in.
The problem with communicating the feminist concerns is that they only show up in the text at the end. It would have been much more powerful to have infant girls in the video itself.
Throughout Asia there is a concern that female infants are discarded, as pursuit of position or material wealth favors having male children. It's a problem percolating about which most Americans have no thought.

Is the theme "No women, hence homosexuality"? To my mind, that seems to be the point. A future where there are no women and men take what is available to them (which is other men) is repugnant to gay men.
Selectively aborting girl children is anathema in America and most of the west. Linking that to an increase in the "evil" of homosexuality would also be frowned upon.
Unless I viewed this wrong, that approached will not fly in this country.

That was one of the issues I had, but looking online, it appears that India has a culture/legal system that both implicitly and explicitly enforces homosexuals remaining closeted. Homosexuality was not decriminalized until 2009. There still may be a culture that people choose to be gay or straight. As I said, I don't know enough regarding Indian culture on the ground to decide that the video was not worth sharing

Very good. I am opposed to abortion in this country if it is merely another form of birth control, but using to limit the number of babies of one particular sex is abominable. Many eastern countries seem to be comfortable with the practice but in America me are all agreed.

This is another example of how views of (homo)sexuality have changed over time.
It was just seen as unhealthy to let men's sexual drives go unsatisfied, and if no women were present due to circumstances (especially during wartime) then other men (or boys) were seen as acceptable substitutes.
Sexual realtions between men were not necessarily frowned on unless they did so in preference to women or if in doing so they neglected their duty to sire more warrior sons to defend the tribe/city-state/kingdom.

I had the same problem as a kid, not as extreme, but I was a bit different, not interested in "guy" things like sports or muscle cars, I was more into art and music, which we all know are totally "gay".
And although I was certainly interested in girls, I was just too socially inept to actually have a real girlfriend.

Funny, when I was a minority white kid in a mostly black and Latino school in Gary, I got picked on a bit, but there were also kids who stood up for me, they thought it was cool to be smart.
Then we moved to a working-class mostly white neighborhood and I got picked on mercilessly for being a bookwork and a nerd.

Good morning from drizzly Philadelphia.
Pulled pork scheduled for lunch today. Following afternoon activities uncertain.
Only Mother's Day activity was a quick "hello, thinking of you" call to my sister-in-law. She's recovering from lung surgery to remove a tumor and associated lymph node, so she can't talk well, or for long.
Biopsy indicated that this tumor was something that had spread from her colon cancer a few years back. Which is not so good. So radiation treatment is under way, and there will be a round of chemotherapy as well.
Seems to be the trend nowadays at this age. Know four people currently undergoing treatment of one sort or another for cancer or a cancer-like (e.g. requiring chemo) condition.
Otherwise it looks like it may be a slow day at work. Which will be good for catching up on a few things.

It's sort of odd where getting beaten on the field due to superior physical skills is looked up to or at least accepted, but getting out thought is seen as some sort of cheating. I'm sure there has been some study of that.
I also know of studies that indicate a number of cultures have severe pressures to conform, and that includes not standing out in terms of intellectual ability or achievement. While I guess standing out in terms of physical achievement might still be viewed as "natural".

Seriously though, the problem is putting in for (early) retirement, taking your full pension THEN taking a position with the same entity for a full salary
It's not like you retired from your company, taking your pension then going and working part (or even full) time somewhere else to 'stay busy"

True. But true in New Jersey to the point of being a stereotype.
I need to email my one friend living there and see what his viewpoint on this is. He definitely wasn't a Corzine fan, but I don't think he is horribly fond of Christie either.
And he has railed in a blog about the need for New Jersey to start consolidating there governmental levels simply to reduce the overlap of services between municipal, township, and county level. Same issue exists in Pennsylvania, but I think to a lesser degree. (Though, for instance, the City of Philadelphia and County of Philadelphia are congruent and I think do not duplicate many services. As if that helps - the standard gripe here is that the only thing the city does effectively is parking enforcement.)

Interesting question. Though I guess that depends on whether defining "retirement" and getting a pension has legalese attached to it making you ineligible for unemployment. (And I vaguely recall that unemployment benefit costs do trace back to the last employer to some degree.)
You don't start getting your pension upon simply becoming unemployed. So it's a bit more complicated than getting or not getting "what you earned".

D.C. had both. Bumper-to-bumper 65+ mph traffic on the Beltway, plus the belief that turn signals "gave information to the enemy". I also saw deliberate acceleration to prevent lane shifts there.
About the only behavior I did not see much of was the "accelerate in right lane and do shift to left lane via miniscule gap" stunt. That seems to be a New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania special.

I think part of it is that with higher concentrations of drivers the number of extremely aggressive ones hits some sort of critical mass. As well as the tentative ones that create bottlenecks and chokepoints. The combination then feeds off each other and you see a mess.
Plus the odd phenomena of watching two lanes of traffic go start-stop-start on a 5-6 mile stretch of road that has no exits/entrances. It's all cars jockeying back and forth and "sorting out" causing slow-downs.

The dynamic here in the Twin Cities is slightly different. There are multiple exits/entrances per mile through the downtown areas, some of which are heavily used and some of which aren't, which leads to an interesting "push-pull" phenomenon where you go almost instantly from 15 to 50 and then wind up on the brakes 1/2 mile later.

And I had evil thoughts on Saturday night. Was driving I-76 East into Philadelphia (the infamous "SureKill Expressway") and hit a stretch where it slowed down to 55-60 mph with both lanes solidly filled.
Suddenly two motorcycles blitzed up the middle (on the dotted line) doing somewhere over 75 mph (probably more like 80-85). No police around, and obviously little/no chance of a pursuit even then.
My evil thought was whether a car would "hip check" one of the jackasses. re: #158 thedopefishlives
There is that phenomena here in Philly and also in Pittsburgh. Part of "learning the ropes" is knowing the spots where one lane is much better to be in than the other due to merges or exiting. And that it varies by day of week and time of day - like the exit where the Philly Zoo is gets heavily backed up on weekend afternoons.

On I-394 heading out of Minneapolis, they have a limited access carpool lane. It's only separated by a double white line, so of course, overly aggressive jackasses like to cross over the line to pass people. The Minnesota State Patrol takes a particular kind of pride in nailing those bastards to the wall. I've even seen it happen on multiple occasions.

I don't mind them. Saw plenty when I was over in Germany.
The threat of them is where drivers do not know the right-of-way rule for them*.
* - And New Jersey (of course) has some screwed up pseudo-rotaries that don't follow the standard rule; e.g. two of the four in directions don't have the stop/yield signs since they're a "major" road compared to the other road entering the rotary.

Complicating the equation is the Lowry Tunnel running under the west side of Minneapolis. Technically, you're not supposed to change lanes in the tunnel zone, but of course, people do it anyway. And since many people are actively afraid of driving through the tunnel, traffic gets all sorts of messed up during peak times. To say nothing of what happens when an accident occurs therein.

Pittsburgh has *2* major highway tunnels in/near the city, plus 3-4 more that affect commuting, and one of those being very long. Speed in tunnel jokes are long standing.
Back in the early 80s the City (County?) decided to enforce a "no-wake" speed limit on motor boats in the river right around Point State Park where the three rivers meet.
A cartoonist had a three-panel cartoon published soon afterwards:
Panel 1: Buoy with sign "No Wake Zone" - boats zooming by it
Panel 2: Buoy with sign "C'mon Guys!" - boats zooming by it
Panel 3: Buoy with sign "Maintain speed in tunnel" - boats "putt-putt" by it

That's pretty standard in lots of places in NJ. 4-lane road with signs periodically that say "All Turns from Right Lane" with the little cloverleafs to facilitate doing the left. You need to watch for traffic merging from those when you come up to the major road on a cross street.

The best part about the Lowry is that it makes a rather severe 90-degree turn inside the tunnel. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell in an exclusive interview with Breitbart weighed in on the new media landscape and how it has affected conservatism. “… [I]f you’re looking for proof of the power and impact of new media today, look no farther than the outpouring of grief over Andrew Breitbart’s tragic passing,” McConnell said. “It was a fitting tribute to a real innovator who proved to a lot of young conservatives that they too had the power to break through the left-wing media filter. I put Rush and Matt Drudge in that category of early pioneers, but Andrew was obviously one of a kind too. He’s deeply missed, but he left an incredible legacy.”

GOP lawmakers: Romney should shame Obama with Israel trip
By Cameron Joseph - 05/14/12 05:00 AM ET
Mitt Romney should visit Israel soon, Republican lawmakers say, claiming that such a trip would highlight the fact that President Obama has not been there during his first term.
Congressional Republicans told The Hill that there would be many benefits for Romney should he go to Israel, explaining that it would both advance U.S.-Israeli relations and help him politically.
“It would be a good visit for him,” said National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman Pete Sessions (Texas).

Ouch.
Most of the Pittsburgh ones are fairly straight. Though a few of the shorter local ones have bends in them. But they're not on an interstate.
Cleveland has a 90 degree left turn on I-90 (25 mph speed limit). I presume that one must be extremely fun in winter weather. But it's not in a tunnel.
I used to live near a fun intersection. 5-way intersection - four of the five had stop signs. Every so often a non-local would come up to it on the road without a stop sign, see the cars waiting at stop signs, and assume they had a stop as well - and stop. And then wonder why cars started honking at them from all directions.

African-American Church Leaders Condemn Obama For Gay Marriage Support
BALTIMORE (WJZ)– Just days after President Barack Obama announced his support for same-sex marriage, pastors and priests around Maryland took to their own pulpits with their reaction– and in some cases– condemnation of the president.
Derek Valcourt explains the president’s comments have folks on both sides of the issue fired up.
Both sides hope the president’s position helps sway votes in their favor when the issue hits Maryland’s ballot this November.
“I think same-sex couples should be able to get married,” President Obama said.
When President Obama announced that his position on same-sex marriage had evolved, it outraged some African-American pastors like Pastor and Del. Emmett Burns.
“He has said to his base, African-Americans, ‘I am going against your beliefs and your thoughts’,” Burns said.
He’s so opposed to same-sex marriage, he told church members he will no longer support the president and now predicts Obama will lose the election because of it.
He and many other leaders are pouring their energies into gathering the signatures needed to put Maryland’s same-sex marriage law on the November ballot.

I'm far more concerned with the fact that the NJ budget revenue projections are coming in far lower than the Governor expected, and lower than even the nonpartisan Office of Legislative Services, which means that proposed property tax relief wont happen, or that they'll have to cut other services to offer up some form of tax relief.
It's a big problem, and one that stemmed from unreasonable expectations of revenue growth. Far too optimistic, and that leaves a budget hole that has to be filled.
We're talking about $300+ million (though it could be closer to $500 million).
And all this pales in comparison to the whole mess in Greece, or the JPM mess (where $2 billion in losses - in trades that supposedly were designed to reduce risk to the banks - has got new scrutiny on the banks and renewed calls for the Volcker rule).

Stevie Bates, daughter of Satellite Academy basketball coach Darryl Jones, goes missing
Darryl Jones doesn’t have plans to celebrate Mother’s Day. At a time when households are honoring the maternal bonds of the family unit, Jones, the boys basketball coach of city-power Satellite Academy in the Bronx, which has won three of the past five city championships in the PSAL’s Alternative League, has a more pressing matter to deal with.
Jones’ daughter is missing, and hasn’t been seen by her family or heard from since April 27. Stevie Bates, a 19-year-old former cheerleader at the Bronx High School of Science, with an infectious smile and shoulder-length blond dreadlocks, was traveling cross-country with a group of friends she met through the Occupy Wall Street movement when she disappeared. Bates was last observed boarding a bus in Pittsburgh destined for New York, where she was supposed to arrive on April 28.
Vivian Bates, who is married to Darryl, last spoke with her daughter on the phone on April 27. According to Vivian, Stevie was at a Greyhound bus station in Pittsburgh during a layover. The time was 7:52 p.m. Stevie hasn’t been heard from since.
“That was her last layover,” Vivian told the Daily News. “I asked her if she wanted me to pick her up at the bus station (back in Manhattan) and she said ‘no.’ She was going to Brooklyn to meet up with some friends. But she never got there. She was coming home later that day.”
That was the last time Vivian Bates and Jones heard from their daughter, who is a 5-6, African-American female, weighs 120 pounds and is distinguished by her dreadlocks and a nose and belly piercing.
Sunday is Mother’s Day and Darryl says the family doesn’t have any plans to commemorate the occasion, except to keep looking for clues to find their daughter.

If you have a slope to provide a head, start a couple hose siphons.
Probably not. The basement is sunk about 6 inches below the nearest grade I can find outside but that's a good idea. I might look abound and see if I can get a hose long enough to reach lower ground. Maybe I can snake a hose into a storm drain out on the street.

re: #222 Killgore Trout
You might want to look at renting a pump system to drain the water out and then use the wet/dry to clean up the damp spots.
Tough situation to be sure, but you might want to look at a water cutoff to prevent it from happening in the future - it only lets water run to the washing machine when the machine is turned on.

I have a large wet vac (maybe 15 gallons). It'll take me most of the afternoon. Any better ideas?
You can get one of these pretty cheap - much better than a wet-vac.
[Link: www.wayfair.com...]
I use one of those plus a wet-vac. I don't know if your wet-vac has a pump attached (most they're selling these days don't) - but if it doesn't, you can buy, relatively cheap, a pump to attach to it.
And make sure you work proactively to eliminate mold especially if you have any drywall partitions. It's amazing how quickly mold develops and proliferates in a wet basement.

re: #227 jaunte
Sump-pumps, per se, is not really what you want (they're designed to work in a pit) - what you want is one that can sit on the surface of the floor and suck from the bottom; some require only about 1/2 inch of water or so to keep pumping.
Using one of those and a wet-vac to suck up the leftovers works pretty well.

Shop vacs work pretty well too.
The problem with shop vacs that they sell these days is that you have to empty them by hand. The wet-dry vacs used to have pumps attached, but for some reason it's become kind of difficult to find those anymore. Maybe it's because they can make more money by selling a separate pump that you attach - or maybe it's because it was difficult to manufacture a combination vacuum and pump that lasted (the ones I had previously crapped out pretty quickly).
A couple different ones are still manufactured, but most Home Depots and Lowes' I've been to around the Philly area don't have them in stock.

Protesters arrested at Obama Chicago office ahead of NATO summit
CHICAGO, May 14 (Reuters) - Eight protesters were arrested at President Barack Obama's campaign reelection headquarters in downtown Chicago on Monday, giving local police a first taste of what is expected to be a week of protests centered on the NATO Summit this weekend.
About 100 protesters gathered at the Obama offices in a lakefront tower building as morning commuters were streaming into work. Eight were arrested on for trespassing at about 9 a.m. local time, Chicago police spokeswoman Laura Kubiak said.
According to local media reports, dozens of protesters entered the building and ran up escalators. The group, which was organized by the Catholic Worker movement, sang folk songs celebrating peace.
A representative for the Obama campaign had no immediate comment on the incident.
Obama hosts a meeting of leaders from the NATO military alliance beginning this weekend which is expected to include a discussion of the worsening situation in war-torn Afghanistan.

This 121-Megapixel Photo of Earth Will Make Your Jaw Drop
Need something to put things into perspective on a Monday morning? Our suggestion: The largest single-shot photo of Earth ever taken.
Eclipsing NASA's updated "Blue Marble" shot, which is a composite of many satellite images, this image is a single-shot taken from 22,369 miles away by Russian weather satellite Elektro-L No.1.
The colors on the 121-megapixel photo are quite different from the ones on NASA's photos of Earth. To capture the image, the satellite combines visible and infrared wavelengths of light. Infrared light is used to see plants, which is why the parts of the Earth that would normally be green are seen as rusty brown.

One section asks this leading question: "Did dinosaurs and people live at the same time, and why do so many recently discovered ancient art works accurately picture dinosaurs?" The answer is a resounding "yes." "The only reasonable explanation for the stegosaurus carved in stone on the wall of the Cambodian temple is that the artist had either seen a stegosaur or had seen other art works of a stegosaur," Quist writes. Egypt brokers deal to end Palestinian hunger strike against Israel over detentions and to move to end administrative detentions that can go on indefinitely:
While Israel had signaled it was prepared to offer concessions on prison conditions, it has showed no willingness to end so-called administrative detention, where prisoners can be held indefinitely without charge or trial.
Azzam al-Ahmed, a senior official of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas's mainstream Fatah movement, said prisoner leaders had been brought to a jail in the Israeli town of Ashkelon for discussions with Israeli officials on implementing the deal.
"We hope the agreement concludes today, barring any obstacles," Ahmed told Voice of Palestine radio.
Ahmed said that under the draft accord, Israel would release so-called "administrative detainees", prisoners held without trial, once their detention period was over. Israel usually holds such prisoners for six-month terms that a military court can extend.
A Palestinian official in Cairo said Israel also had agreed to renew family visits for prisoners from the Gaza Strip that had been suspended after Israeli soldier Gilad Schalit was captured by Hamas and taken to Gaza in 2006. He was released last October in exchange for more than 1,000 Palestinian prisoners.

Why Are So Many Young Adults Cavalier About Birth Control?
I probably don’t need to work too hard to convince you that this country has serious problems accepting scientific facts, but a short list of evidence: Anti-vaccination nuttery, homeopathy, global warming denialism, creationism. All these have high levels of popularity, or at least some amount of influence over ordinary people. This kind of suspicion of science affects how people understand the effectiveness of contraceptio. To make it worse, people’s understanding of how these things works relies so much on word of mouth. The problem is that a lot of people who misuse or don’t use contraception and then get pregnant claim to family and friends that they were using contraception, which reinforces the false belief that it’s less effective than it is and that you can’t stop fate when it comes to getting pregnant.
The second reason that there’s an overemphasis on this “fate” narrative is that Americans still just aren’t completely comfortable yet with sex for pleasure, especially when it’s women having it. Hard to believe in a culture drenched with porn, but yet there we are. The notion that a woman can go for years, decades, even her entire life having all the sex she wants without necessarily having to pay for it with an unintended pregnancy doesn’t make sense in the sin-and-punishment narrative that lingers in American attitudes about sex./blockquote>

Whoever Leaked the Underwear Bomber Story Ought to Be Nervous
The heat is on a U.S. official responsible for leaking details of al Qaeda's disrupted bomb plot to the Associated Press.
On the Sunday talk shows, high-ranking officials in both chambers of Congress across both parties called for investigations and the prosecution of the man or woman who leaked details about the infiltration of al Qaeda's Yemen branch. Unlike previous situations, where government crackdowns on leakers has been criticized, this appears to be a fairly clear-cut case of improper leaking.
Leaks have been a problem for many years. I think this one went too far and whoever it was will probably be made an example of.

Small Study Reports Benefit of Marijuana on MS Spasticity
May 14, 2012
A small clinical trial by California investigators found some benefit of smoked marijuana against spasticity (muscle tightness and spasms) and pain in people with MS. Participants also experienced significantly reduced thinking ability after smoking marijuana, highlighting the need for research on cannabis products or other treatments that can more selectively reduce painful symptoms without producing adverse effects on cognitive function. Additional research examining the effects of marijuana on spasticity in MS is being supported by the National MS Society and others. Fischer: 'I am not Anti-Mormon, I am Anti-Mormonism'
Now I want to say this again, I am not anti-Mormon. I am anti-Mormonism because I think it's error, but I am pro-Mormon. I am for Mormons, I want to see them come to a full understanding of the truth. I bear them no ill will, I bear them no malice, I love them, I want them to come into the full light of the truth.

It's an unfinished basement with cement floors. Clean up shouldn't take too long and property damage will be minimal. I doubt they'd cover my stupidity anyways.
I went through that a few years back when I was renting a house. Make sure you use lots of bleach to prevent mold from growing. That would be a far worse problem than flooding.

re: #305 Cathartic Expression
I really like the show "Dirty Jobs", but the one time I wanted to punch the host was during the cleanup of a house in New Orleans post-flood. He did something that sent a cloud of dust-- and mold spores-- into the air, and everyone started at once saying "no no no". That's the stupidest thing I've ever seen him do on that show.

Garlow: Opposing Gay Marriage May Cost Us Our Lives
Garlow weighed in, declaring that religious liberty and "the radical homosexual agenda" were on course for a head-on collision in America because "they cannot both exist in the same nation at the same time." As such, Garlow warned that advances in marriage equality will eventually force the Christian church underground because the gay agenda is all about "coercion, and crushing, and taking away our liberties and freedoms." But nonetheless, Garlow said, Christians must be willing to stand up and speak out in opposition even though "we are coming into an era where it could cost us everything, including our lives":
I love how these people have such a strong faith in their religion that people not living by their same beliefs is considered life threatening.

Being Republican is a choice. So is being a dickhead.
So, Lankford would be okay with someone being fired over being straight? Nah.

Gates Foundation Will No Longer Make Grants to ALEC Nonprofit
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation today became the latest backer to withdraw financial support for the American Legislative Exchange Council.
A foundation spokesman told Roll Call that it does not plan to make future grants to the conservative nonprofit, which has come under fire from progressive activists for its support of voter identification laws and other contentious measures.
The foundation, run by the co-founder of Microsoft Corp. and his wife, contributed more than $375,000 to ALEC in the past two years and was the target of an online petition launched today by the liberal Progressive Change Campaign Committee that garnered more than 23,000 signatures in a matter of hours.

I translate that as "I like your fanatical religious faith, but wish it was under my direct command rather than someone else's."

Hatred of Israel is getting violent in Germany...
Radicals attack ‘I Like Israel’ event in Germany
BERLIN – Right-wing radicals attacked a booth distributing pro-Israel materials at the “I Like Israel” event in the west German city of Siegen on Saturday, resulting in physical injuries to two women and a man, according to the news outlet n-tv.
The veteran German journalist Ulrich Sahm reported on n-tv’s website that the public prosecutor investigating the assault said a 25-year-old right-wing extremist was arrested.
Roger Bückert, head of the pro-Israel group “neveragain” and an organizer of the booth, told n-tv that he was “not surprised but nonetheless shocked.”
The assault involved four to five masked anti- Israel radicals who are believed to be active in the neo-Nazi political scene. “I Like Israel” is a nationwide annual event that blankets 64 German cities and towns to promote solidarity with the Jewish state and celebrate its Independence Day – with the head of Germany’s Central Council of Jews, Dr. Dieter Graumann, serving as a patron.
According to n-tv, there have been verbal tirades against Israel supporters at the I Like Israel event in the past, but not physical attacks.

Can the state force a person to take drugs in order to execute him? That is the grisly question raised by the case of Steven Staley, a convicted murderer who believes polygraph machines are controlling and torturing him. Even though he’s psychotic, Staley is scheduled to be executed next week, based on a judge’s order requiring him to take medication he has refused. If Texas actually goes ahead with this deeply disturbing plan, it will be the first state, as far as I can tell, to drug someone in order to carry out a death sentence. That is a distinction that no one on the planet should want to have.
At least half the state will hoot & holler and have no problem with that whatsoever.
In the old days the heretic walked to the stake still a heretic, proclaiming his heresy, exulting in it. Even the victim of the Russian purges could carry rebellion locked up in his skull as he walked down the passage waiting for the bullet. But we make the brain perfect before we blow it out.

I love how these people have such a strong faith in their religion that people not living by their same beliefs is considered life threatening.
Once again, this is Dominionism: the belief that America's unique standing in the world arises from the fact that our nation's laws reflect (thier bigoted, fundamentalist view of) God's Divine Laws.
The second that we stray from (their interpretation of) God's laws by allowing things like gay marriage, abortion, perostititution, drug use, gambling, gun control progressive taxation, etc., we are "shaking our fist at God" and inviting his Divine Wrath upon our heads.
That is what gets them so worked up, it is why they can never be content with the notion of "we disapprove of it, and don't want you to do it, but the law says it cannot be prohibited".

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. He founded and ran the charity, but he ended up using the funds meant for those in need for his own benefit. It involves Medicare/Medicaid funding as well as state funds that were directed at Soundview by Espada when he was in office. With the convictions, it may kill the health care network and end health care access to many in those communities. So, it not only affects Espada, but those who the charity was meant to help.
