After Secret Meeting With Romney Campaign, Breitbart Employees Say He Supports Their Smears

Breitbart editor bragging that Romney supports his ‘surrogates’ attacking Obama over Rev. Wright, is playing ‘good cop, bad cop’
Wingnuts • Views: 38,411

Readers on this site are already aware of the leaked document that showed a super-rich right-winger planning a $10 million “scary black President” smear campaign. Of course, once the plan and the billionaire backer were exposed to the sunlight, they quickly pivoted to say that they never really planned on running the ads.

Romney, after initially hemming and hawing and saying he hadn’t “read the papers yet,” eventually got around to “condemning” the attack strategy, saying, “So in regards to that PAC, I repudiate what they’re thinking about.”

But some in the right-wing blogosphere think that Romney actually is offering “wink wink nudge nudge” support for the smear campaigns, and is simply employing the strategy of “good cop, bad cop” alongside his surrogates. For example, here’s what one breitbart.com editor had to say (chronological from bottom to top):

Now, I’m tempted to dismiss this as another example of breitbart.com editors being completely unaware when everyone is laughing at them. But on the other hand, Breitbart representatives did recently participate in a secret meeting with the Romney campaign about campaign messaging. You’d think that if the Romney campaign wanted ridiculous race-baiting campaigns or birther conspiracy theories off the table, they could have made that clear.

Though it violates my general rule-of-thumb, if breitbart.com editors are claiming that Romney is actually supporting their smear campaigns, I say we should believe them.

I tend to agree with you. On the other hand, the blinkered folks over at Breitbart think that anything short of being figuratively taken out back and beaten with a crowbar is some form of support.

Why is anybody questioning whether or not Romney is a dirt bag who is willing to smear his opponents to win? Did these people sleep through the primaries? The other GOP candidates hated Rmoney in 2008 and 2012 because of the way his campaign behaved. We all know what he plans on doing. This will be the ugliest campaign we have seen in a long time. Rmoney has a proven track record of saying or doing whatever it takes to win and he has no shame about flip-flopping or lying.

Jeffrey Kuhner: Gays and Lesbians ‘Are Even Worse Than the Radical Islamists’

Washington Times columnist and Edmund Burke Institute president Jeffrey Kuhner appeared on The Janet Mefferd Show yesterday where he said that members of the LGBT community “are even worse than the radical Islamists” and more terrifying than the dictators he often writes about, calling them “the most fanatical, hate-filled…and intolerant people I’ve ever met.”

Arizona Goes Birther: Secretary Of State Says It’s ‘Possible’ Obama Won’t Be On Ballot

The man in charge of running Arizona’s elections has gone to the birthers. Secretary of State Ken Bennett now says he’s not convinced Barack Obama was really born in the United States and so he is threatening to keep the president off the ballot in November.

Bennett’s comments came in an interview late Thursday with conservative radio talk show host Mike Broomhead on Phoenix station KFYI.

Bennett said he was following the lead of the state’s eccentric Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a fellow Republican who ordered an investigation into the president’s birth certificate last year and concluded the document released by the White House is a forgery. Bennett said he is now trying to get verification from state officials in Hawaii that the certificate is authentic.

In doing so, Bennett caved to a fringe group of activists and writers who believe in a conspiracy theory that just never seems to die no matter how much proof they get. Hawaiian officials have said time and again that Obama was born there in 1961, yet the theory persists.

Bennett, the state’s No. 2 elected official just below Gov. Jan Brewer (R), said his investigation isn’t personal. He said the reason he started looking into it is because he got more than 1,200 emails asking him to do so after Arpaio’s investigation came out.

“I’m not a birther. I believe the president was born in Hawaii — or at least I hope he was,” Bennett said on the show. “But my responsibility as secretary of state is to make sure the ballots in Arizona are correct and that those people whose names are on the ballot have met the qualifications for the office they are seeking.”

Well, the meeting wasn't exactly secret. It was off the record, which I'm sure is common practice and wouldn't be surprised if Obama, Bush, clinton, bush and every other presidential nominee has had similar meetings. As for taking Loesch's word for anything, I'll just assume she's lying as always. I see no need to trust her as a reliable source of information, especially about secret plots.

DOCUMENTARY PROOF: James O’Keefe’s Latest Video Is A Fraud

The conservative filmmaker refused to acknowledge that the two “non-citizens” he smeared in his video, Zbigniew Gorzkowski and William Romero, are actually American citizens, demanding “official documentation that proves otherwise” before he’d correct his story.

Romero’s family provided this official documentation to ThinkProgress last night. Here is a scanned copy of Romero’s certificate of naturalization, issued on February 4, 2011. Redactions are ours:

To refresh, O’Keefe’s “proof” that Romero had committed voter fraud was that he refused jury duty in 2010 for not being a citizen but then registered to vote on December 5, 2011, as though there was no possible way his citizenship status could have changed in the interim year.

Obama seeks filter-free news

Jared Bernstein, Vice President Joe Biden’s economic adviser and a favorite of the labor-liberal wing of the Democratic Party, also held a conference call with friendly reporters.

White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel has done conference calls with black and Hispanic media outlets.

Obama himself plans to meet soon with liberal bloggers, according to an administration official. With little fanfare, he’s already sat for interviews with Black Enterprise magazine, Telemundo and Los Angeles-based Hispanic radio host Eddie “Piolin” Sotelo.

In many ways, Obama’s effort is simply the latest expression of a familiar phenomenon. It is the perennial hope of presidents — especially early in their administrations — that they can escape the filter of an often-skeptical Washington press corps and communicate directly with a target audience.

Outrageous!

House GOP Throws Out Entire Summer Of Debt Ceiling Negotiations In Less Than 10 Minutes

Last August, debt ceiling negotiations between House Republicans and Senate Democrats came to an end when President Obama signed into law the Budget Control Act, a not-so-grand bargain that created a legislative super committee tasked with finding spending cuts to offset the debt ceiling increase. If the super committee failed, automatic cuts from the defense budget and discretionary spending levels would offset the cost.

The deal was an end to three tumultuous months of wrangling over the debt ceiling that brought the government to the brink of default and, thanks to the GOP’s intransigence on new tax revenues, led to the first credit downgrade in the nation’s history. House Republicans have repeatedly threatened to renege on the deal, and this morning, they made it official, adding an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act that officially replaced spending cuts from the defense sequestration with cuts from the House reconciliation package.

In less than 10 minutes, the House officially unwound a budget deal that took an entire summer to craft, the New York Times’ Jonathan Weisman reports:

Fuck the GOP, I wouldn't trust one of those fucks with a contract to mow my lawn. Want to know why I don't feel good about the economy? Its because of the fucking GOP. You can't fucking trust one of those fucking bastards.

if you’re the conservative, Phyllis Schlafly-backed Eagle Forum, it’s a clarion call that America is in grave danger of being overrun by uneducated, un-American brown people:

It is not a good thing. The immigrants do not share American values, so it is a good bet that they will not be voting Republican when they start voting in large numbers.
[...]
Instead, the USA is being transformed by immigrants who do not share those values, and who have high rates of illiteracy, illegitimacy, and gang crime, and they will vote Democrat when the Democrats promise them more food stamps.

Why is Mitt Romney serving warm cookies to the media?

He took reporters' questions after Thursday's campaign rally instead of keeping them at bay. He brought them warm chocolate chip cookies for the flight from Jacksonville to Palm Beach, Fla. After he got off the plane, he walked over to show reporters a picture of his 5-year-old grandson, Parker.

The "fake Ann Romney" story is the new anti-LGF meme. Yes, I did fall for a parody article on Ann Romney:

Looks like Charles has been hard at work over at Twitter. I got an email this morning:

New things are always happening here at Twitter HQ. We're growing at a rapid pace, and our commitment to simplicity, transparency, and reaching every person on the planet continues. We thought you might be interested in knowing about some of our most recent developments:

[blah blah blah]

In addition, we've made a number of updates to our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

From there:

Please review the Twitter Rules (which are part of these Terms) to better understand what is prohibited on the Service.

From there:

Spam: You may not use the Twitter service for the purpose of spamming anyone. What constitutes “spamming” will evolve as we respond to new tricks and tactics by spammers. Some of the factors that we take into account when determining what conduct is considered to be spamming are:

If you have followed a large amount of users in a short amount of time;
If you have followed and unfollowed people in a short time period, particularly by automated means (aggressive follower churn);
If you repeatedly follow and unfollow people, whether to build followers or to garner more attention for your profile;
If you have a small number of followers compared to the amount of people you are following;
If your updates consist mainly of links, and not personal updates;
If you post misleading links;
If a large number of people are blocking you;
The number of spam complaints that have been filed against you;
If you post duplicate content over multiple accounts or multiple duplicate updates on one account;
If you post multiple unrelated updates to a topic using #;
If you post multiple unrelated updates to a trending or popular topic;
If you send large numbers of duplicate @replies or mentions;
If you send large numbers of unsolicited @replies or mentions in an attempt to spam a service or link;
If you add a large number of unrelated users to lists in an attempt to spam a service or link;
If you repeatedly post other users' Tweets as your own;
If you have attempted to "sell" followers, particularly through tactics considered aggressive following or follower churn;

And more. I don't know how this compares to the old rules, but I like this part:

What constitutes “spamming” will evolve as we respond to new tricks and tactics by spammers.

Suspected Neo-Nazi Planned Attack on Consulate to Influence US Presidential Election, FBI Says

In an attempt to stir debate on immigration amnesty issues ahead of the 2012 presidential election, a man with suspected ties to white supremacist groups planned to attack the Mexican consulate in St. Paul, Minnesota, according to a federal affidavit, which also said he would risk his life in the event of a "race war."

Joseph Benjamin Thomas also told an undercover FBI agent he considered himself a "domestic terrorist" instead of an American, the FBI affidavit said.

The document, recently unsealed in federal court, provides new details about the investigation into Thomas' alleged plan. He was indicted in April on drug charges, though authorities had been watching him and another man since 2010 as part of a domestic terrorism probe. The affidavit said he'd amassed weapons and wanted to attack minorities, people with left-leaning political beliefs and government officials.

Oh, brother. Another Dem is bringing up polygamy...

Democrat Invokes Mormon Polygamy In Slamming Romney

In an interview with CNN.com, a North Carolina Democrat predicted trouble for Mitt Romney because of polygamy — a practice the candidate's church hasn't practiced in more than a century.

Rep. Alma Adams, who serves as chairwoman of the Legislative Black Caucus in the North Carolina General Assembly, said Romney will struggle for support among social conservatives in the state who voted to support a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage last week.

"If they look at that awful ballot amendment, and they compare that with his faith, I don't think people will be OK with it," Adams said. "From what I understand about the Mormon faith you can have multiple wives. That's sort of a contradiction. There are questions about who Romney is and what he believes in terms of that particular issue."

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints stopped practicing polygamy in 1890, and the practice is considered sinful in modern Mormonism. Polygamists are excommunicated from the Mormon Church.

In 2007, Romney said in an interview that he couldn't "imagine anything more awful than polygamy."

Anti-Mormon Activist Ask if Christians Would Vote for a Member of the First Church of Satan

Earlier this week we wrote a post about Jerry Johnson and his role in formulating a document calling on Christian leaders who decide to back Mitt Romney to also make clear that Mormonism is a cult. As Johnson explained, he personally will not be voting for either President Obama or Mitt Romney because that is like having to choose between "voting for the Beast or the False Prophet."

Of course, if there is some Christian activist out there urging Christian voters not to support Mitt Romney because of his Mormon faith, it is only a matter of time before they are invited to make their case on Steve Deace's radio program ... just as Johnson was last night.

Johnson made the case that Christians are misinformed about the true nature of Mormonism, thanks to people like David Barton who is "hugging and kissing all over Glenn Beck," and asked whether Christians would be willing to vote for a member of the First Church of Satan if the candidate supported the conservative agenda, warning that the "anybody but Obama" mindset was going to drive the nation and the church "into the arms of perdition" and prevent God from blessing America:

For those following the Facebook IPO, from the open at $42 (it was priced at $38), the stock has gone as high as $45 but is now trading at $38.61. Not much of an opening day pop.

And it's dragging down one of Facebook's biggest cash cows - Zynga. That's down 13% in heavy trading. Groupon is also seeing its stock slide.

I find it astounding how anyone could think that Facebook should have a market capitalization of around $105 billion (give or take depending on when you caught the stock price). That's greater than a company like McDonalds, Visa, Cisco, Unilever, Home Depot, Canon, Honda, or any number of other companies. I think it's irrational exuberance.

Facebook's market cap is about half that of Google, but Facebook generates six times less revenue per user, according to research by Enders Analysis. In other words, I think Facebook's pricing is unsustainable - and that could be why the stock price has done what we've seen.

A Climate Reality Billboard

Recently, the Heartland Institute put up — and just as quickly pulled down after a firestorm of criticism — a truly bizarre billboard in Chicago attempting to equate climate science with radicals and murderers. Since the billboard was suddenly and unexpectedly empty, we thought we would take the opportunity to remind Heartland who is really on the fringe here.

So in advance of the Heartland Institute’s annual conference next week, we’re putting our own ad in its place. We’re also putting up eight other billboards nearby — so that Chicagoans and everyone at the conference will see our response.

I pretty much agree with all that. Considering profits for Facebook were only about $1 billion last year and that it doesn't exactly have tens of billions in physical assets, valuing the company at over $100 billion is excessive. I mean, sure, Facebook is actually making money, which is more than could be said for most of the late 90s tech bubble companies, but it's not making that much money. Buying into Facebook seems to be making a bet that revenue will skyrocket in the coming years and I'm just not sure it's a good one.

Appreciate it. I was half watching this. I figured I'd get the full lowdown on the This Week in Tech podcast on Monday.

Maybe you can make the argument that in the future Facebook may generate more moola per user. I'm still kicking myself over not buying Apple stock in '03 when iTunes debuted; who'd have thought then they'd be selling shares at $500-600 a pop?

I think you're on the money, as it were, about FB now. It will be valuable in the future, but today seems like more hype than anything else.
