Gateway Pundit Enraged By President Obama Complimenting Joplin Students For Working Together

Says ‘Working Together’ Is Socialist
Wingnuts • Views: 43,490

“Gateway Pundit” Jim Hoft, St. Louis’s resident birther blogger, was frothing-at-the-mouth angry this morning over what he said was the “socialist message” of President Obama’s commencement speech to the graduating class of Joplin, Missouri, a city ravaged by a devastating tornado last year.  What was the evidence for Hoft’s claim (not that a birther cares about evidence)? Here’s the passage he highlighted:

‘The road has been hard. The day has been long. But we have tomorrow, so we march. We march together,’ he said on the first anniversary of the deadly tornado strike…

‘As you begin the next stage in your journey, you will encounter greed and selfishness; ignorance and cruelty. … You will meet people who try to build themselves up by tearing others down; who believe looking after others is only for suckers,’ he said.

‘My deepest hope for all of you … [is that] you can serve as a reminder that we’re not meant to walk this road alone; that we’re not expected to face down adversity by ourselves,’ he told his audience. ‘We’re stronger together than we are on our own.’

So, in other words, President Obama is saying that people need to work together and care about their fellow citizens.  And, of course, he was saying this in the context of a town that was completely devastated by a tornado and had been doing a good job rebuilding precisely because people in the town were willing to work together and had been getting help from other Americans.

I honestly don’t know how someone could be so ridiculous as to think that helping other people out and not being selfish is “evil.”  As @jbposnanski pointed out on Twitter, Hoft has all the makings of a cartoon villain, openly rooting for greed and selfishness while condemning “working together.” Hoft’s sentiments, of course, are also completely at odds with the Golden Rule and the New Testament, though he’s happy to use his Christian beliefs to bash others.  What a piece of work.

By the way, here’s the local coverage of the President’s visit.

As I read this I'm reading my Spring 2012 issue of ASPCA magazine which is talking about Joplin: One Year Later and about all of the pets that were saved, reunited with owners, boarded, fed and adopted out.

Cooperation and community spirit were a primary thrust of this article and only a complete tank tread would criticize the President for providing inspiration to this shattered community.

Agreed.

This is where the right wing is headed: Disdain and hatred of community, common goals, and cooperation. See, those all begin with C, just like Communism. Instead, they encourage greed, selfishness, and isolation. Which is funny, since I thought conservatives were supposed to be all for building strong, moral communities. Isn't charity supposed to be the reason we can stop having the government provide a safety net? I suppose it's easy to talk like this when you're not struggling to get by.

What a country we live in. We have most Republicans claiming to revere Reagan, but don't support what he did or stood for. We have many Christians claiming to love Jesus, but don't agree with feeding the poor or healing the sick.

8 lawhawk  Tue, May 22, 2012 9:57:18am

Hey Jim, here's a reminder of just how off base you are. You do realize that former President Reagan frequently used the concept of working together as a way of actually inspiring people - the same way that President Obama is doing now. Guess that makes Reagan a socialist:

Perhaps because we know we control our own destiny, we believe deep down inside that working together we can make each new year better than the old.
Radio Address to the Nation on New Year’s Day
January 1, 1983

Or perhaps this:

By working together, pooling our resources and building on our strengths, we can accomplish great things.

9 blueraven  Tue, May 22, 2012 9:58:57am

The President's commencement speech was beautiful and inspiring.
They cant take it.
They need to try to take him down a peg or two, because this speech will garner attention and praise from any objective source.

I am so very proud of all those folks down there in Joplin. It has been a difficult year for them and their Mayor today said "thank goodness for all the support" his community has received. He made a special point to thank everyone from AmeriCorp who volunteered who might be listening when he was interviewed on NPR this morning.

I'm sure Reagan never used a teleprompter. Because, as Alzheimer's starts to advance in a 75-year old man, everyone knows that his ability to memorize long stretches of text improves.

Satanic Earth-Worshiping Militant Environmentalists are Funding Islamic Terrorism

It had been a while since James Dobson did a series of radio programs designed to terrify his audience about the looming threat of an Islamic take over of the world, and so he has returned to the topic this week with the help of guest Michael Youssef who graciously offered his "Insights on Radical Islam."

And just what sorts of insights did Youssef have for Dobson and his audience? Well, when Dobson wanted to know why Americans oppose domestic drilling for oil even though our dependence on foreign oil funds terrorism, Youssef explained that it was because lots of people don't love America coupled with the fact that environmentalism is a militant religion no different than Radical Islam, prompting Dobson to declare that "there's something Satanic about this":

Fischer: Like Jesus, Conservatives Don't Abuse 'Those who Verbally Abuse Us '

As is customary, Bryan Fischer began his radio program yesterday with a discussion of the Bible - in this case the First Epistle of Peter. The teachings found in these passages prompted Fischer to declare that conservatives, despite having "verbal abused heaped on us all the time," never return that abuse in kind ... just like Jesus:

Sheriff Joe Arpaio Admits Using Taxpayer Funds To Pursue Birther Conspiracy Probe: ‘So What?’

Arpaio, who has previously claimed that the investigation was being funded through private donations, dismissed concerns about tax dollars funding the conspiracy quest and said “he hopes the agency will be paid back through private donations”:

“It’s one deputy, so what? We have security issues, too, that I can’t got into,” Arpaio said on Friday. “For six months we were not spending any money. When you’re doing investigations sometimes things change, you put more resources into it.”

“He’s not going to make any arrests,” Arpaio said. “I didn’t say we’re going to keep using him. We’re not going to use him constantly. He’s not assigned to it. For this trip I feel it’s important to have a deputy there. He’s just a liaison to give advice if needed. He’s not doing anything. The posse’s been doing the research. I’m not going to say what other trips they’ve been taking but they haven’t had a deputy with them.”

North Carolina Anti-Gay ‘Electrified Fence’ Pastor Faces National Backlash

Pastor Charles Worley of Providence Road Baptist Church in Maiden, North Carolina told his congregation this Sunday that he wants to set up gay concentration camps for “lesbians and queers” to let them die out, and the backlash has been strong. Thanks to complaints from many individuals, Pastor Worley no longer has a website, because the company that produced and hosted it took it down after receiving numerous complaints. Both Anderson Cooper and Martin Bashir took on Worley on their respective shows yesterday, highlighting not only how wrong his interpretation of scripture was, but how dangerous his rhetoric was.

So blatant,

The right wing in WA.

Business leaders pay for access to WA Premier

Around 30 of Western Australia's leading business figures have been paying $25,000 per year for access to Premier Colin Barnett and his ministers.

Proceeds from the group, dubbed the Leaders' Forum, go into state Liberal Party coffers.

Perth construction boss Gerry Hanssen says the idea surfaced six years ago when the Liberal Party was short of funds.

But he denies the group is paying to influence government policy.

"We are a democratic organisation and there's no better opportunity in the Liberal Party where you've got 20 CEOs sitting around a table and telling an individual minister what the state should be doing," he said.
"It's not a lobby group at all, it is a mentoring group for the Liberal Party."

Mr Hanssen says the forum is an opportunity for business to make its views known.

"When you've got the money, you've got a privilege, and I think it's a good purpose," he said.
