Let's face facts here -- this is the new default in the Republican party. This is not a fringe movement. It's the standard. Just look in Texas. Look at the Arizona birthers trying to get the POTUS taken off the ballot. Look at the Iowa GOP platform.
The real Republican fringe now are the non-birther, non-wingnut, non-batshit types. What we're seeing with Trump's resurgence is Romney's camp looking at the GOP as it is and playing along accordingly because they want to win. Winning means appealing to the birthers.

This just came from NOAA or the Weather Service the Navy has:
25/2345 UTC 32.1N 75.2W ST2.5 94L
The ST2.5 means that the system is classified, as Sub-Tropical, with a Dvorak rating of 2.5, which is approximately a pressure of 1005 mbars, and winds of 40 mph.
Another statement from another portion of the government has it a tick stronger:

Romney cannot repudiate the birthers because he would be repudiating his own strategy in the process. All along he has tried to pander to the nutty GOP base just enough to get them to the polls, but not enough to alienate any sane or partially sane voters who might still vote for him. He has to have that crazy base, but he can't win with them alone. It's quite a balancing act, often forcing him to be in two positions at once. He is not a weasel because he is weak or incompetent. Beryl will be here in the next 12-24 hours.
The Navy has issued a Tropical Cyclone Formation Warning, and the NHC is saying this:
SATELLITE PICTURES AND REPORTS FROM NOAA BUOY 41002 INDICATE THAT THE LOW PRESSURE AREA...CENTERED ABOUT 300 MILES EAST OF CHARLESTON SOUTH CAROLINA...IS BECOMING BETTER DEFINED AND HAS DEVELOPED THUNDERSTORM ACTIVITY NEAR THE CENTER. IF CURRENT TRENDS CONTINUE...ADVISORIES COULD BE INITIATED LATER TONIGHT. THIS SYSTEM HAS A HIGH CHANCE...NEAR 100 PERCENT...OF BECOMING A SUBTROPICAL OR TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS. LITTLE MOTION IS EXPECTED TONIGHT...BUT A WEST-SOUTHWESTWARD OR SOUTHWESTWARD MOTION SHOULD BEGIN TOMORROW AND CONTINUE THROUGH SUNDAY. COASTAL INTERESTS FROM THE CAROLINAS SOUTHWARD THROUGH NORTHEASTERN FLORIDA
SHOULD MONITOR THE PROGRESS OF THIS SYSTEM OVER THE MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND. IN ADDITION...LOCALLY HEAVY RAINFALL AND FLOODING WILL CONTINUE THROUGH AT LEAST TONIGHT OVER PORTIONS OF CENTRAL CUBA AND THE CENTRAL BAHAMAS. FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON THIS SYSTEM...PLEASE SEE HIGH SEAS FORECASTS ISSUED BY THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE...AND PRODUCTS FROM YOUR LOCAL WEATHER OFFICE.
I don't know why NOAA still does the All-Caps thing. It's hard to read.

Early versions of teletypes didn't support lower case. ASCII (which does) came about in the 1960s --just about when integrated circuits were becoming popular. But ICs and transistors can be zapped by EMPs. Some pre-ASCII equipment is more robust in that regard, and in emergency situations, robust can be a win, even if slow and uppercase-only. Hope that helps.

An interesting story from Tampa, Florida that caught my eye today:
After guard dies, accused shoplifter charged with murder
TAMPA (FOX 13) -
It could have been a simple shoplifting charge, but a man accused of stealing goods from a Target may face serious time in prison.
That's because the security guard who chased and tackled him collapsed and died of a heart attack.
Now the accused shoplifter faces a third-degree felony murder charge, and a minimum of 10 years in prison.
It all unfolded at the Target store on West Hillsborough Avenue on May 27, 2011.
Security cameras zeroed in on Mervin Bettis almost immediately. You see him looking around; then he reaches for the shelves.
Hillsborough detectives say he's shoplifting more than $1,100 worth of merchandise. Moments later, the video shows him walking right past the checkout lines and out the door.
He doesn't get far. First, a loss prevention officer grabs him; then, the store's security guard rushes up.
All three fall to the ground in the struggle. This is where it might have ended: a simple shoplifting bust. But just seven minutes later, the security guard you see in the video collapses from a heart attack and dies, turning this into a case of third degree murder.

It depends on the state and the store. In this case, they had seen Bettis take over $1000 worth of merchandise, and so what the guards were allowed to do was expanded. It should not have extended to lethal force, though ('should' used instead of 'would'. Obdicut will tell you why I chose words as I did.)

It depends on the state and the store. In this case, they had seen Bettis take over $1000 worth of merchandise, and so what the guards were allowed to do was expanded. It should not have extended to lethal force, though ('should' used instead of 'would'. Obdicut will tell you why I chose words as I did.)
Maybe. But a murder charge sounds absurd to me. I think those little pizzas that Target sells are more to blame.

An interesting story from Tampa, Florida that caught my eye today:
I'd agree that manslaughter would be an appropriate charge. Doesn't murder require malicious intent? [edit2:] Or reckless endangerment? (Thinking manslaughter.)

re: #105 It's a cookbook!
Last I checked, retail security guards weren't supposed to do that.
I also need to point out that what the guard was supposed to do makes no difference. Bettis committed a crime by shoplifting and the guard died because of it. In Florida, that is Felony Murder in the 3rd Degree.

But but... the guard was trying to tackle him and Bettis was standing his ground!
Seriously though, why does that state even bother having police anymore?

Felony murder is any death that occurs during the commission of a felony. It can go as high as Murder in the 1st, but in this case the charge is Murder in the 3rd because Bettis did not have a weapon or use violence on anyone. But the guard is still dead, and if the state can prove that Bettis' felonious actions caused Russell Horner's death, then that proves Felony Murder. Making matters even worse for Bettis is that Horner was a retired FBI agent, which is prompting the DA to make the minimum sentence 15 years instead of 10.

No, sir! SYG is voided in this case by Bettis's having been in the commission of a felony. Florida law is clear on that point.

Agreed. Murder implies some form of intent. If the perp had bashed him in the head, intent. But a perp cannot be responsible for heart disease. DA overreach.

Having a below-average intelligence doesn't tell you a person likes being spoon-fed information, or isn't willing to think. It only tells you (possibly) something about the level of thinking the person is able to do. Even a below-average, normal-range human is pretty damn bright.

On May 25, 1925, a grand jury indicted John T. Scopes, a Dayton, Tenn., schoolteacher, for his classroom instruction on Darwin‘s theory of evolution, in violation of a state law that banned the teaching of “any theory that denies the story of the Divine Creation of man as taught in the Bible, and to teach instead that man has descended from a lower order of animals.”

A 2011 report found that approximately 28 percent of biology teachers consistently follow the recommendations of the National Research Council to describe the evidence for evolution, 13 percent of biology teachers explicitly advocate creationism and about 60 percent “avoid controversy by endorsing neither evolution nor its unscientific alternatives.” A co-author of the report said, “Students are being cheated out of a rich science education.”

Honor student placed in jail for tardiness and truancy at school
Judge Lanny Moriarty said last month Diane Tran was in his Justice of the Peace court for truancy and he warned her then to stop missing school. But she recently missed classes again so Wednesday he issued a summons and had her arrested in open court when she appeared.
Tran said she works a full-time job, a part-time job and takes advanced placement and dual credit college level courses. She said she is often too exhausted to wake up in time for school. Sometimes she misses the entire day, she said. Sometimes she arrives after attendance has been taken.
The judge ordered Tran to spend 24 hours in jail and pay a $100 fine.
Judge Moriarty admitted that he wants to make an example of Tran.“If you let one (truant student) run loose, what are you gonna’ do with the rest of ‘em? Let them go too?” Judge Moriarty asked.
She's supporting her older brother who is in college AND her younger sister who lives with relatives. Her parents divorced and abandoned the kids, each going their separate ways. She can't even live with family because of her work schedule. She lives with one of her employers.
Oh yeah. That's who you make an example of for missing school. What the hell?

The judge is a real peach; get this quip of his after the backlash started coming down on him like a ton of bricks:
Judge Moriarty is off on Fridays so he has not made a decision as to whether he will throw the case out.
"I hadn’t thought on that issue because it turns me, ‘Well, he’s soft. He’s not gonna do nothing.’ I’m taking off at 11:30 today," said the judge.
He left early yesterday, was off today, and the courts (like all federal, state, and local offices) will be closed Monday for Memorial Day; if I didn't know better, I'd say that he's trying to ride this out through Tuesday without doing responding to the public pressure, hoping that people will forget about it next week and beyond.

That piece is pretty pathetic:
If any city in the world has an eternal lien on it, it's Jerusalem, and it's held by the Jews. "From Zion shall go forth Torah, and the word of God from Jerusalem." So says the Bible, still humanity's single most influential book, which mentions Jerusalem and Zion, a synonym, roughly 500 times. Rosenfeld apparently is not as familiar as a writer on Jerusalem might be with the city's historical and religious roots.
That's pure religious propaganda.

re: #190 I'm back in the USSR (sigh)
At least looking at the recent postings, CAMERA appears to be just a propaganda front for a fundamentalist type of Judaism.
For example, their claim that the Jewish temple predates Islam by 2000 years. That's just a myth. As near as anyone can tell archeologically, the original Yahweh-ist temple dates from the time of Josiah, in whose time probably was invented the story of the founding of "Israel" as we see it in the OT. Now that obviously predates Islam, but for CAMERA to cling to a literalistic interpretation of the Torah pretty clearly shows their own biases.
And, btw, the photographer on that piece was interviewed, in which she recounts this occurrence on her recent trip there:
KR: Was it difficult to gain access to certain religious sites and neighborhoods? Did you have to dress differently when you went out to shoot?
AA: Yes, it was more difficult this time than ever before, at two key places in particular.
At the Dome of the Rock in the Muslim Quarter of the Old City, I needed the permission of the Islamic authorities. I dressed as a Muslim woman, covering my body well and wearing a long lightweight cotton pastel scarf on my head. The Palestinians there said I was dressed in the style of a woman from Khalil and let me work for over an hour. I was very grateful because it is almost impossible to get permission these days, from either the Muslim, or Israeli authorities. This is the great holy hotspot on the planet: it is extremely sacred to all sides.
In Mea Shearim, an ultra Orthodox Jewish neighborhood, photography is harshly discouraged, so I really had to be careful and very politely persistent. I dressed extremely conservatively in a long, high-necked blouse with full-length buttoned down sleeves, a full-length black skirt with black stockings, and very sensible black shoes. But in the street I was hit on the back as I tried to take pictures in the main square, and had plastic bags put over my lens.
CAMERA doesn't like NG, and has written hit pieces against it before.

I don't know why GOProud bothers:
[Link: www.goproud.org...]
Meghan McCain is Wrong About Andrew Breitbart
Joint Statement of GOProud Co-Founders Christopher R. Barron and
Jimmy LaSalvia(Washington, D.C.) – Last night on the Reverend Al Sharpton Show on MSNBC, Meghan McCain referred to the late Andrew Breitbart as an “extremist” and accused him of engaging in “hate” politics, claiming he played on people’s “fears.” In response, Christopher R. Barron and Jimmy LaSalvia, co-founders of GOProud – a national organization of gay and straight Americans seeking to promote freedom by supporting free markets, limited government, and a respect for individual rights – issued the following statement:
“Meghan McCain should be absolutely ashamed of herself. She went on a liberal network with a liberal host and demonized Andrew Breitbart. During his life, Andrew Breitbart did more for gay people, and showed more political courage on behalf of gay people, than Meghan McCain could ever dream of.
“When GOProud was just getting started and under intense fire from anti-gay forces within the conservative movement, Andrew Breitbart reached out to us and took up our fight as his own. Andrew showed real courage, standing up to the intolerance of some in the conservative movement.
“We didn’t always see eye to eye with Andrew, but we could always count on him as a friend, and he never backed away from his support for this organization and for gay conservatives in general.
“Andrew Breitbart wasn’t an ‘extremist’ – he was a committed conservative. Andrew didn’t engage in ‘hate’ politics – indeed he stood up to hate. Andrew didn’t play on people’s fears – quite the contrary, Andrew inspired tens of thousands of conservatives who had been bullied by the left for years to stand up and fight like hell for what they believed in.
“Meghan McCain has made quite the career for herself picking fights with high profile conservatives and then going on liberal outlets to trash them. She picked a fight this time with a man who isn’t even alive to defend himself. As usual, however, this is a fight Meghan McCain has lost.”
Well, I guess I do get it. Meghan McCain is an easy "RINO" target you can attack to try and ingratiate yourself with the base, but doubt it's enough to be allowed back into CPAC. Oh, and I wonder if they really managed to write, "Andrew didn’t play on people’s fears," with a straight face.

re: #233 EdDantes
Antisemitism has many, many roots, not the least if which is political.
The Jews are small in number, thus present no real threat, are easily identifiable (the 'other') and have a history of pacifism.
Politicians have used Jews to divert attention away from their own misdeeds and excesses for millenia.
Insofar as many in the Arab world go, that the Jews fought back was stunning. One fellow wrote how unfair it was the same Jews who marched into the Holocaust were now a huge source of shame to the Arab world. They wanted those Holocaust Jews as adversaries.
In modern Europe today, the undercurrent iof antisemitism has it's roots in the Holocaust as well. The need an Israeli villain to assuage their own guilt.
"Maybe the Jews deserved it, after all, maybe we weren't so culpable", etc.
Only Germany has really faced their own demons.
I suspect Sergey can regale you with stories of antisemitism in Russia- even post communism.

How Israel/Jews are perceived plays a great role in how they respond to their critics.

It's not all that surprising that, in the wake of Rick Perry's much-maligned anti-gay ad the other day, the gay conservative group GOProud ended up at the center of the ensuing media storm, fielding requests from reporters left and right. Except it seems that the group's director and chairman (inadvertently, they claim) created a gay-bashing brouhaha of their own by letting slip the true sexual orientation of Tony Fabrizio, a top strategist on the governor's presidential campaign. In an e-mail to the rest of the board — acquired by the Daily Caller — GOProud leaders Chris Barron and Jimmy LaSavlia defended themselves, basically by claiming that Fabrizio's in-or-out status wasn't exactly a closely held secret.
Both Jimmy and I have known Tony for years and have known that he was gay for years. Multiple media outlets contacted us after the Perry's ad debuted asking our opinion of Fabrizio’s role in the campaign given the anti-gay nature of the ad. Every news outlet that called asked our opinion of a gay man being a part of this campaign’s leadership. (Emphasis added.)
As we were responding to these inquiries it never occurred to us that he wasn’t out. We would never intentionally out anyone, but quite honestly, we didn’t think we were outing anyone. If Tony Fabrizio was closeted it was news to both of us.We aren’t in the business of prying into other people’s personal lives, however if Tony Fabrizio wanted it to be a secret that he was gay he probably should have done a better job of letting other people know it was supposed to be a secret.
At least one board member, conservative muckraker (or yellow journalist, depending on your persuasion) Andrew Breitbart, was incensed enough over the incident to resign. The Daily Caller was also given an e-mail that Breitbart sent around explaining his decision.

Wow, Berlusconi was even creepier than I thought :o
[Link: www.reuters.com...]
One of the young women who attended Silvio Berlusconi's "bunga bunga" parties told a court on Friday that she dressed up as a burlesque version of U.S. President Barack Obama to entertain the former Italian prime minister.
In testimony during a trial against the 75-year-old Berlusconi on charges of paying for sex with an underage prostitute, Marysthell Polanco said she had also dressed as prosecutor Ilda Boccassini.
Boccassini, known as "Ilda the Red" because of her hair color and what Berlusconi says is her communist political sympathies, is one of the prosecutors in the ongoing trial.
"I dressed up as Boccassini with a toga to make him laugh, and also as Obama," Polanco told the court.
Polanco, a striking 28-year-old from the Dominican Republic, said the parties were innocent fun accompanied by burlesque, but not pornographic, entertainment.
In April, Berlusconi said the parties were "elegant dinners" where there was sometimes entertainment that he called a "burlesque game".
Previous witnesses who attended his parties painted a more sordid picture, including nudity, mimicked sex, and one described two women wearing nasty versions of nuns' habits performing a raunchy pole dance.

That reminds me of a story about my daughter.
When she was very little she wanted 'daddy' to but her a dress for a birthdy party (read: social event of the season) my ex took charge of.
I dutifully took her to a children's cloting story and lamely asked for advice (I was- and remain- clueless about certain things). I expected to be there for hours.
As my daughter perused what appeared to be miles of drersses on racks, the saleslady suggested anything with fringes at the bottom of the dress will do.
"Little girls love to twirl", she said,
We were out of there in 20 minutes flat.
The kid was in twirling heaven for weeks. And I was the hero.

There's discussion about the rise of creationism, and the rise of Islamic groups who try to read modern scientific discoveries back into the Koran. As well as the basic problem of more literalistic and fundamentalist religious believers being challenged by modern science.

No problem whatsoever. Islam is a real threat in Europe. People have died opposing it.
There are millions of Muslims in Europe. If "Islam"—as opposed to radical Islam/Muslims—was a threat, then all of Europe wold be burning.

Harun Yahya (Adnan Oktar) is a really evil fellow. I'm not even talking about his attempts to wreck science education in Turkey and around the world. He also published Holocaust denial literature. After he understood it wasn't a good strategy, PR-wise, he published some book instrumentalizing the Holocaust (i.e., evolutionists did it!).

This.
To my knowledge it was never a problem in the past. Many of the Muslim scientists & philosophers were devout believers, but they understood that science & religion have different purposes, each had it's own place. Today, people are trying to blur the lines.

re: #273 EdDantes
I believe this is a matter of semantics.
Radical Islam- and there is plenty of it in Europe- is the problem and that must be distinguished from the mainstream community..
Millions of silent majority Muslims who live in Europe are not the problem, never have been and never will be.
It is the loud mouth radicals and dysfunctional lunatics who have taken center stage. Why? Beause the rest of the Muslim community are too busy working, raising kids, and putting up with teenagers going through the psycho years to get involved with these- as you rightly note, dangerous lunatics who have killed many.
This is a case of a minority who have way over sized influence, stupid teens, dysfunctional young adults and wannabe Islamic super heroes- as in cartoons.
Then there is the issue of these dysfunctional lunatics influencing a peaceable community, but that is a whole other- and real story.

Look at it this way- dysfunctional child abusing priests, Jewish abusers and Muslim abusers are not representative of Christianity, Judaism or Islam.
Each of the above garners way more attention than is deserved.
This is not to minimize radical Islam or terror- these are plagues inflicted on the entire community in the name of whatever cause, religion, etc is the flavor du jour and these evils must be dealt with. They are real and pose a real threat. That applies to all and any religious extremists.
That said, you cannot tar an entire religion or community for the excesses of these dysfunctional and dangerous lunatics.

So I've been mucking around the site that Oktar-Yahya created as a sort of a shield against accusations of antisemitism - [Link: www.islamdenouncesantisemitism.com...]
On the frontpage you see him meeting various rabbis.
But if you dig deeper...
In the article about the Holocaust the gas chambers are notably downplayed, and Norman Finkelstein is featured quite prominently, as well as comments like
[Link: www.islamdenouncesantisemitism.com...]
Finkelstein also clearly expresses that in order to form and keep the Holocaust industry alive, Jewish organisations and, in some cases, some Jewish people commit numerous "frauds". According to the author: "Articulating the key Holocaust dogmas, much of the literature on Hitler's Final Solution is worthless as scholarship. Indeed, the field of Holocaust studies is replete with nonsense, if not sheer fraud." 2
In this article - [Link: www.islamdenouncesantisemitism.com...] - Yahya quotes Holocaust denier Roger Garaudy and concludes with "While Muslims rightfully oppose Israel and atheist Zionism, they must also bear these truths in mind, and remember that it is not the devout Jews who are the problem, but atheist Zionism".
Etc., etc.

Police say roving Mass. cows drank some brews

BOXFORD, Mass.—Police in Boxford say a roving group of cows crashed a small gathering in town and bullied the guests for their beer.
Boxford Police Lieutenant James Riter said he was responding to call for loose cows on Sunday and spotted them in a front yard on Main Street.
Riter says the herd soon high-tailed it for the backyard, and then he heard screaming.
He says when he ran back there, he saw the cows had chased off some young adults and were drinking their beers.
Riter says the cows had knocked the beer cans over on a table, and were lapping up the spillage. He says the bovines even started rooting around the recycled cans for some extra drops.

Colorado has a 'Castle Doctrine' law, which is what's in play here. The shooting took place inside the man's own home, and thus I don't think he should be charged. Out on the street is a different matter, but unless the shooting of an intruder was especially egregious in some way, I don't want it closely questioned.

I slept in the greenhouse last night. I woke up about 4am to see a giant rat crawling around on the roof above me. Freaked me out so bad I couldn't get back to sleep. I'm running out to buy more rat poison as soon as the stores open.

I think that point of view is closer to the GOP base than you may think.
This is for sure, without the support of people in NC who think like that, the GOP doesn't win too many State or National elections.
So call them crazy, but do it in a hushed voice. Mitt on Mute.

Yeah, but if it is his castle and he's so paranoid about intruders coming in to harm him, he might try shutting the door at night. The drunk girl walked through an unlocked screened door. True, its her fault for being drunk and stupid, but its hard to understand how someone can be afraid of intruders to the point they keep a loaded weapon bedside, but then not even shut the door or lock it.

True, but the law deliberately does not concern itself with such matters, and that's true in every state. The law on what constitutes a valid threat varies from state to state but in America if someone breaks or wanders into your home you have no duty to retreat.

I considered traps last year but rejected the idea in favor of poison. There are just too many rats and mice around to make trapping practical. Portland is a pretty clean city but it's still an urban environment. Well meaning nature lovers have lots of compost piles and bird feeders which attract rats and mice.

This happened in New Orleans years ago. A foreign student out partying walked intot he wrong house in the middle of the night.
I haven't read about this particular case, but it sounds like he was waiting for someone to walk thru the door --almost like entrapment.

In other parts of the country, such outdoor amenities actually can attract larger animals like wild turkeys or whitetail deer.

When an attractive college girl wanders into your bedroom in the middle of the night...I'm not sure shooting her is the way to go.
Drunk Intruder Shot By Man Faces Felony Trespassing Charge

Ok, not entrapment. Also, it seems, justified.
"They initially thought it was a raccoon,” said Boulder police spokeswoman Kim Kobel. “When the homeowners realized someone had opened the door and entered their bedroom, they shouted for the intruder to get out.”
Kobel said the male homeowner warned the intruder that he had a gun and would use it.
“The intruder continued walking through the bedroom,” Kobel said. “The husband fired one shot.”
Kobel said the couple turned on a light after hearing something fall to the floor.
“They saw an unknown female intruder on the floor with a gunshot wound to her hip,” Kobel said. “They called 911.”Investigators released the 911 recording late Thursday afternoon.
The recording includes the conversation between the operator and a frantic female homeowner.
(Homeowner) “Yes, she’s in the house now. She’s awake. She’s fine. But she’s shot.”
(Homeowner) “She walked into our bedroom, and we told her we were looking at her. She kept coming in the bedroom, and we shot her.”
The 911 operator asked the female homeowner if the suspect could talk. The homeowner asked the alleged intruder a question.
(Homeowner) “Why did you just walk into our house when we were screaming at you to get out?”"

Yeah and if you leave the house unlocked and stand by with your loaded gun, someday you might get lucky enough to have the chance to kill someone who wanders in and then the NRA will write a paragraph about your heroic deed in their newsletter and send you a T shirt. W00t!

A person can forget to lock the door --it happens.
A person also has the right to use their screen door if the weather permits.

I tried a couple deterrents. Cat littler and pepper sprays are supposed to get rid of rats too but they don't work very well. I was just out in the garden and noticed little tiny bird eggs on the ground with holes nibbled in them. They must have raided the nest in my pear tree. Bummer.

My point is more about the politicians' behavior. The factcheckers can be wrong too, but if their decision favors someone, that someone usually hails it as authoritative, thus implicitly agreeing that the factchecker has credibility (regardless of whether it really has one - it can be atrocious in fact). Good morning Lizards.
Lazing about while laundry runs in western NY state.
Yesterday was visit of Ft Stanwix in Rome, NY, the nearby Oriskany Battlefield Monument (American Revolutionary War) and then the drive west to my brother's residence south of Rochester.
The fort is a reconstruction made in the 70s on the original site - and using the original plans that were still archived in London. Made entirely of wood and earth fill. Not a fun place to garrison I'm sure; bored out of your skull cooped up inside, and a decent chance of being attacked by Indians or Loyalists if you went outside. Like Fort Ontario the day before it's simply a strategic piece of land overlooking a bottleneck in transportation on the frontier and also important to the profitable fur trade with the Indians at that time.

I don't have a problem with people deciding to keep and bear arms. I just find it odd that the homeowner would be so prepared to shoot an intruder that they keep a loaded weapon bedside, but then they don't even shut the front door or lock it. So what if the intruder isn't a drunk bouncing off the walls and making a racket. You'll probably just sleep right through their visit, if you are lucky that is.

Totally dependent on the environment. If I wake up and realize I didn't lock a door, I'd get up and fix it. When we leave to go shopping for a few hours we leave the back door open for the dog. If our town developed a crime rate or had a return to KKK days I'd up the readiness level.

true, but its not a solvable problem. To admit, even tacitly, that the fact-checker caught you telling a lie would be to admit to your party's voters that you lied to them. That would likely suppress your voter turnout in general election or get you defeated outright in a primary. At the same time, given the frequent conflicts between ideology and reality telling the truth may not always be an option either, as doing so may cause a cry and cry of 'RINO!' (or 'DINO!', as the case may be) to go forth.
Often simply remaining silent, damaging though that can sometimes be, is the only honest option.

Where in Wisconsin do you live?
East side of Madison. Was a very nice neighborhood when we bought our house in 1999. Lot's of folks from less nice places in Chicago thought so and moved here to get away. Unfortunately many of their "friends" and family followed the folks trying to make a better life for themselves and so many of the problems followed. Increases in drugs & gangs especially. Been 6 shootings that I am aware of, 2 wounded, no dead, in the past 2 months within a 1.5 mile radius of my home. I say "aware of" as I saw several squad cars doing a neighborhood search pattern again last night but there was nothing in the news this morning.
Couple of people opened fire on a group outside of a big bar downtown last Saturday night. Couple of people wounded, more arrested for not cooperating with police and the two shooters are still at large.
Fun times in the not-so-big big city.

But that's the problem if you're using, say, FactCheck.org to prove your point, and earlier FC factchecked your ass, you're implicitly agreeing that they were right that last time, even if you don't mention it. I.e., FC said you lie, later you quote FC as authoritative, and thus you agree they proved you a liar.

Politically shrewd option could be to take a factchecker's arguments (since they rely on public sources anyway) and use them without mentioning the factchecker by name.

Three of Sheriff Arpaio's former right hand men are suing the Sheriff, MCSO and others for defamation.
Chief Deputy Dave Hendershott, Deputy Chief Jerry Black and Deputy Joel Fox were all accused of misconduct in what has become in the Munnell memo. That memo written by Deputy Chief Frank Munnell who is also named in the lawsuit.
The three man claim negligence, defamation, and abuse of process for being forced out after the memo was given to Arpaio.
They are also suing Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu claiming he used the investigation as a springboard for higher political office. All say they have suffered emotional distress, loss of income and a damaged reputation.

Shutting your door is the #1 way to keep intruders out. And yes I have kids, which is precisely why I don't keep loaded guns laying around the house.
Not that you should have a gun...
If your home is physically secure enough to keep intruders out, you are trapped at least momentarily in the event of a fire. If you leave loaded guns around you are negligent. There are ways to have guns safely in the house. And ways to have a loaded gun or two in a quick release gun box. Teaching kids whats dangerous is essential. Guns, fire, prescriptions, cleaning chemicals, shop tools, etc.
Alarm and good locks are a must. Keeping a cell phone, ID and keys in the bedroom when you sleep is smart too.

Exactly. The proverbial "castle doctrine" has been accepted practice for well over a millenium in the common law. It has also held, for that same period, that you have to retreat, if at all possible, if you are in the public sphere. Changing that has proven to be a very bad idea.

But we're not talking about who was racist back then, but about the dynamics. The simple fact (of which I was admittedly ignorant) is that it is at this time the GOP began to discriminate against blacks in its midst (earlier the only elected black politicians were notably Republican, which points to a much healthier relationship between blacks and whites in the GOP than in the Democratic party of the time). So there was an overlap of several decades when the GOP and the Dems were comparably racist, but it was an overlap with different vectors - while Dems were getting less racist, and slowly shedding their segregationists to the GOP, the GOP was getting more racist (or stayed at the same level), and shedded blacks, while accepting the Dixiecrats.
And the breakpoint was the period I pointed to.

I'd still say 'no', but mostly due to the race riots (whites attacking blacks) that occurred after WWI. The GOP took a stronger stand against such riots than the Dems did and used the issue to push for federal anti-lynching legislation that the Democrats blocked. This, coupled with the demolition of Indiana's branch of the GOP for getting into bed with the KKK, caused the strong majority of the racists to leave the GOP. Republicans subsequently used the issue of anti-lynching legislation as a club against the Democrats in 1924 after KKK-aligned convention delegates blocked an anti-lynching plank from being added to the Democratic Party platform.

Racism isn't inherently party-unique--it's more ideological, part of the conservative syndrome. The Dems and Repubs have done a gyre around it historically. Since TR the shift has been towards the Repubs, accelerating under FD(and E)R and in full turn by RFK/Nixon era.

I never argued otherwise (in a historical perspective). I'm merely interested in when the GOP became a welcome home for racists - I was under impression it happened during the SS period, but it seems the Lily-White movement started the process, sort of the earlier Southern Strategy (which still didn't help the GOP with the white Southerners). Pointing out that everybody was a racist back then is not meaningful - racism can be a relative term (certainly, Lincoln was a racist, by our standards, but it doesn't mean there wasn't a diff between him and Davis; by their times' standard Davis was *the* racist; etc.).

National Review
's Kevin D. williamson takes on the issue of the GOP and race:
The Party of Civil Rights
This magazine has long specialized in debunking pernicious political myths, and Jonah Goldberg has now provided an illuminating catalogue of tyrannical clichés, but worse than the myth and the cliché is the outright lie, the utter fabrication with malice aforethought, and my nominee for the worst of them is the popular but indefensible belief that the two major U.S. political parties somehow “switched places” vis-à-vis protecting the rights of black Americans, a development believed to be roughly concurrent with the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the rise of Richard Nixon. That Republicans have let Democrats get away with this mountebankery is a symptom of their political fecklessness, and in letting them get away with it the GOP has allowed itself to be cut off rhetorically from a pantheon of Republican political heroes, from Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass to Susan B. Anthony, who represent an expression of conservative ideals as true and relevant today as it was in the 19th century. Perhaps even worse, the Democrats have been allowed to rhetorically bury their Bull Connors, their longstanding affiliation with the Ku Klux Klan, and their pitiless opposition to practically every major piece of civil-rights legislation for a century. Republicans may not be able to make significant inroads among black voters in the coming elections, but they would do well to demolish this myth nonetheless.
Even if the Republicans’ rise in the South had happened suddenly in the 1960s (it didn’t) and even if there were no competing explanation (there is), racism — or, more precisely, white southern resentment over the political successes of the civil-rights movement — would be an implausible explanation for the dissolution of the Democratic bloc in the old Confederacy and the emergence of a Republican stronghold there. That is because those southerners who defected from the Democratic party in the 1960s and thereafter did so to join a Republican party that was far more enlightened on racial issues than were the Democrats of the era, and had been for a century. There is no radical break in the Republicans’ civil-rights history: From abolition to Reconstruction to the anti-lynching laws, from the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the Civil Rights Act of 1875 to the Civil Rights Acts of 1957, 1960, and 1964, there exists a line that is by no means perfectly straight or unwavering but that nonetheless connects the politics of Lincoln with those of Dwight D. Eisenhower. And from slavery and secession to remorseless opposition to everything from Reconstruction to the anti-lynching laws, the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments, the Civil Rights Act of 1875, and the Civil Rights Acts of 1957 and 1960, there exists a similarly identifiable line connecting John Calhoun and Lyndon Baines Johnson. Supporting civil-rights reform was not a radical turnaround for congressional Republicans in 1964, but it was a radical turnaround for Johnson and the Democrats.
Willaimson wrote a follow-on piece yesterday, but I am not going to quote that second article yet, as I'm reading it now and have not finished it.

Much agreed. Author also ignores that FDR's so called black cabinet gave many African Americans a voice that hadn't had before and Truman desegregated the military. The thing to me is the Democrats seem to have gotten better about civil rights with time. With some exceptions, I don't see that with the Republicans and the nasty reactions to the president's declaration of support for marriage equality I think show that.

What a great state Tennessee is!!
Cops Can Confiscate Money And Property From Law Abiding Citizens
Prepare to be outraged. If you've ever traveled with a large sum of money, police can legally confiscate it. It's a burgeoning trend known as "policing for profit," and law enforcement agencies are using it to bolster their budgets.
George Reby, a New Jersey-based insurance adjuster was pulled over for speeding while driving through Putnam County, Tenn. several months ago. The officer who pinched him asked him if he had any money, asked to search the car, and took more than $20,000 in cash from Reby.
Reby didn't see his money for four months, but that's because he was proactive. In many cases, law enforcement agencies keep confiscated property indefinitely, even if the person they took it from was not guilty of any crime. Property seizures — known officially as civil asset forfeitures — aren't limited to cash. Cars and other property can be taken, too, with money often going directly into the seizing agency's budget. There are documented cases of law enforcement using funds inappropriately, ala Boss Hogg.
How are they able to do this? Simple: large sums of money mean drug trafficking. Obviously. I mean who would carry $6,000 in a briefcase under the seat unless they were going to use it to buy a bunch of coke?
Larry Bates, the officer who took Reby's money, wrote in his affidavit that he found the money wrapped in small bundles bound with rubber bands, a "common trend for someone who is in the drug trade." He also said that Reby was acting suspiciously, and that a computer background check showed that Reby had been arrested for possession of cocaine 20 years ago (although he was not convicted). These "clues" were what led our Tennessean Sherlock Holmes to the conclusion that Reby must be involved in some kind of drug operation.
But here's the kicker. NewsChannel5 Investigates has Bates on camera admitting that Reby had told him he was using the money to buy a car. He had even showed the officer eBay searches saved on his computer to prove it. When asked why he did not include this information in his affidavit, Bates looked at the ground like a child just caught stealing cookies, and muttered, "I don't know."

Goldberg's calling left wingers fascists totally ignores the fact that fascism's biggest opponents in the 20's and 30's were moderate socialist parties and communist parties. It's not without good reason that the famous poem by Pastor Niemoller names "communists and trade unionists." Is fascism the same as conservatism, no, but liberalism isn't the same as socialism or even communism.

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]
The Lily-White Movement was an anti-civil-rights movement within the Republican Party in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The movement was a response to the political and socioeconomic gains made by African-Americans following the Civil War and the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which eliminated slavery. Black leaders gained increasing influence in the party by organizing blacks as an important voting bloc. Conservative white groups attempted to eliminate this influence and recover white voters who had defected to the Democratic Party.
The term Lily-White Movement is generally attributed to Texas Republican leader Norris Wright Cuney who used the term in an 1888 Republican convention to describe efforts by white conservatives to oust blacks from positions of Texas party leadership and incite riots to divide the party.[1] The term came to be used nationally to describe this ongoing movement as it further developed in the early 20th century.[2] Localized movements began immediately after the war but by the beginning of the 20th century the effort had become national.
According to author and professor Michael K. Fauntroy,
"The lily white movement is one of the darkest and underexamined eras of US Republicanism."[3]
This movement is largely credited with driving blacks out of the Republican party during the early 20th century, setting the stage for their eventual support of the Democrats.[...]
Downfall of black Republicans
By the beginning of the 20th century black political influence was in freefall. During the first three decades of the 20th century blacks were excluded from the U.S. Congress.[10] As the 1920s came the movement had largely succeeded in establishing almost total white supremacy in the party. Numerous events point to this fact such as the barring of black leaders from the Virginia Republican Congressional Convention in 1922.[11]
One of the Black and Tan partisans who continued to hold appointed office was the customs inspector and later comptroller of customs, Walter L. Cohen of New Orleans, who obtained appointments from four Republican presidents and continued in office through the Calvin Coolidge administration.[12]
During the NAACP national convention in 1926, the delegates expressed their disappointment with the party.
“Our political salvation and our social survival lie in our absolute independence of party allegiance in politics and the casting of our vote for our friends and against our enemies whoever they may be and whatever party labels they carry.”[13]
An interesting historical irony is that, though strengthening the Republican Party in the South was a major motivation of the movement, the party faded to near irrelevance in the South during the early 20th century despite the movement's success.
So in one (and only one) respect he's correct - it wasn't some sudden switch, it took decades. The GOP turned its back to blacks in late 19th-early 20th century. Certainly at that time Dem Party's back was turned too, as it was long before that. It took several decades for the Dems to slowly begin turning towards blacks, with the conservatives fleeing to the GOP, which stood its newfound racist ground. The Southern Strategy thus was not so much a change of course as an amplification of the pre-existing course.

I think the real turning point for the Republicans came somewhere in the 30s, when opposition to FDR and the war brought them into alliance with conservative Southern democrats, proto-Bircher isolationists, and religious fundamentalists.
Robert Taft was the leader of the party during this time. I think it was lucky for the US that Eisenhower was able to turn him back (and by extension, the isolationists) at the 1952 convention.

Diamond guys might take cash to buy rough and come back empty handed, the diamonds are sent via Brinks or similar international carrier. Now there we really have an old rich tradition of cash and handshakes rather than contracts and checks. It's changing but slowly. The Orthodox Jewish tend to stick with tradition. Every once in a while we hear about a guy that literally shipped cash and gets in trouble. The Indian diamond traders learned a lot from their predecessors. re: #482 I'm back in the USSR (sigh)
Concerning the dynamics, I found this interesting.
Lily-White Politics
by Benjamin R. Justesen, 2006
See also: Black and Tan Constitution.
"Lily-white politics" was a term popularly used from the 1890s until the 1930s to describe the views of advocates of an all-white Republican Party in the South. Formed in the 1850s as an antislavery organization, the Republican Party had come to power in North Carolina and other southern states after the Civil War with the help of the votes of newly enfranchised former slaves. By the 1890s, however, the party was losing ground to Democrats under the relentless attack of white supremacists. Only North Carolina, which elected a Republican governor and a Fusion legislature dominated by Republicans and Populists in 1896, remained truly competitive, although its presidential vote was consistently Democratic. North Carolinian Jeter C. Pritchard, the region's only Republican U.S. senator, indirectly owed his two elections to black support, since more than half of the state's Republican Party membership was African American. The South's last black legislators served in the North Carolina General Assembly until 1901; the nation's last black congressman of the nineteenth century, George Henry White, served the state's Second District from 1897 to 1901.
As the number of eligible black voters dwindled across the South, lily-white factions in southern states began to battle the traditional "black and tan," or biracial, wing of the Republican Party. After his first election in 1896, Republican president William McKinley unsuccessfully attempted to increase his party's standing in the region by reaching out to white voters during two southern tours. As lily whites became more powerful, national pressure mounted to end the party's dependence on black votes; this was particularly true in North Carolina, which in 1900 was preparing to follow the example of Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina by disfranchising illiterate black voters.

Good points. Taft not surprisingly is someone spoken with approval by Ron Paul. But even Taft- "Mr. Republican" was more flexible than Paul when it came to government projects. I think we need more clarity for these cutting remarks.

North Carolina Baptist Pastor: Put Gays And Lesbians In Electrified Pen To Kill Them Off
I know Mitt Romney won't have a thing to say about this. The strategy is Mitt on Mute when there is a nutjob like this campaigning for him from the pulpit.
Its sickening to me that the US taxpayers subsidize this crap by providing a tax-exempt status for their "place of worship".

Youth
The Providence Road Baptist Church Youth Program includes special Wednesday evening class for youth ages five & up. These classes are design to give individual attention to the spiritual growth of students. In addition, we keep them engaged with activities such as devotions, a youth game room, CYF, Youth Rallies, and special services. The church also has youth Sunday’s where the youth are taught how to teach Sunday school classes, and to be an active part in the service. Our desire for the youth of Providence Road Baptist Church is that they come to the Lord Jesus, be “Born Again” of the spirit of God, and serve him with all their heart.
