"I think it's great that Donald Trump is prepared to make baseless accusations in order to smear a man whose politics I disagree with. That's what we need more of in America today."

The right in a nutshell.

Of course he is. Hannity's a whiny little jerk just like his mentor Rush.

Because tribal hatred is all that counts now if you are a right wing movement partisan. It isn't enough to say your opponent is wrong...you must say he or she is evil, un-American and also hates Jesus. It isn't enough to appeal to your core voters...you must also appeal to the Klan, the McCarthyists and the neo Nazis. It isn't enough to be in the loyal opposition to the Dems when they are in power...you must resist every attempt to even remotely compromise with anything they support no matter how reasonable or necessary it is for the good of the country. The tribe is all that matters, and anyone not in the tribe is an enemy to be crushed.

In the 19th century, Rush Limbaugh would be the region's greatest snake oil salesman, and Sean Hannity would be his most loyal customer.

Not just that. The goal is what you state but also to make the opposition illegitimate. It can't be that Obama and his administration have a different perspective, they have to be Marxists who hate this country and want it destroyed. I blame the rise of Limbaugh and other talk radio hosts who have no real knowledge of politics and policy but have more influence on shaping people's mindsets than those who do.

'Smearing', to my ear, suggests an air of truth that is manipulated to be damaging.

These aren't manipulations, they're lies. This is a word that really needs to be reintroduced to the political-reporting vernacular. Not falsehood, not untruth.

Lie. Lie lie lie lie lie.

What's the deal with the 'Honoring Socialism' bug in the lower right corner of the screen?

Did Obama give the Medal of Honor to one of the 'wrong' people or something?

Dolores Huerta, Cesar Chavez's sister in law was honored. She's a member of the Democratic Socialists of America*

So honoring a socialist is the same as honoring socialism.

I'd like to congratulate Sean Hannity on honoring idiocy and racism. Well done, Sean!

Yeah, the logic probably goes Obama honored Huerta because he shares her socialist views. Of course, they want to ignore the fact Obama also honored Jan Karski, well they're not ignoring that totally, only harping on an innocent mistake that many have made in the past. Not the fact that Obama decided a hero like Karski was worthy of such a honor.

If I was in the White House, and this along with the 4 minute video from Fox & Friends, along with countless other things said and done on the network (particularly what has been said about Michelle) I would basically just kick them out of the press corps.

They wouldn't allow the RNC into pressers to ask questions, so why should they let Fox News?

Given Hannity's friendly relationship with avowed white supremacists such as neo-Nazi Hal Turner, does this come at any surprise at all? Trump just has a fat bankroll and a better PR campaign is all.

20 darthstar  Thu, May 31, 2012 10:51:18am

It's funny that Hannity talks about how "we" don't know Obama and his associations should be questioned. Well how about you Sean paling with Turner. Would love to see him get called on the hypocrisy that he has there. I guess only black preachers are cause for alarm for Sean but being buds with a white supremacist is okay.

I don't think it an education issue. It's more of a cultural problem. Most of the electorate votes based in 30 second TV commercials or based on a predetermined ideology or a single issue. People could be better informed if they wanted to be.

Unless you go indie, or have a powerful contrarian mindset most of the "education" about an election is partisan propaganda anyway.

Fair point. I do think though if people understood for example that there's a difference between a moderate socialist e.g. the British Labour Party under Attlee and Stalinism or Maoism, there wouldn't be the hysteria we see when the word socialist is mentioned.

That's another cultural problem. I really don't think the word socialism (in whatever form) is going to be acceptable in the US politics any time soon no matter how well informed the public becomes.

Again fair point but I think culture and education are related. IF we educate people to realize that not every socialist is the same then maybe we won't see politicians get away with crazy rhetoric about things like Obamacare. I am not suggesting that the American people will embrace socialism with more education. I'm suggesting that by being more educated about subjects like this, they won't buy into hysteria driven by politicians as much. What's weird regarding socialism is it was pretty popular in parts of the country that are now probably among the most staunchly conservative. Take evolution. If more Americans accepted Darwin's theory, we wouldn't as much the hostility to science that we do.

There are a lot of Thomas Nast drawings where he compared communists to nihilists and all sorts of fun things. Perceptions were formed early and never really changed.

Given that Voepel is a far-right TeaPartier who left the Republican party in 2010 - BECAUSE HE THOUGHT IT WAS TOO LIBERAL - I don't think that would have been an option in the first place.

Mayor Voepel Says He's 'Way Right of the Republican Party'

"I'm way right of the Republican party," is what Santee Mayor Randy Voepel tells anyone who asks about his decision to adopt the principles and philosophy of the Tea Party movement.

Paraphrasing a line popularized by Ronald Reagan about Democrats when Reagan left the Democratic Party way back when:

"I didn't leave the Republican Party, they left me," Voepel told me.
