College regionals - Kent State & KY are in their 20th inning.
TWENTIETH INNING.

And I believe they have another game to play today.

Not sure how the pitchers are gonna do it.

Baseball is a good game for kids - there are organized teams of course, but growing up in our neighborhood - all we needed was a bat and a ball and enough people to cover the bases, and we had a game. No expensive anything else needed.

Find something you LIKE to do, then learn to do it if you don't already know how to do it.

I am so enjoying doing the stained glass, I can't tell you. For 20 years I had in the back of my head that this was something I could learn to do and do fairly well. But it's very time-consuming, so I retired, daughter went off to college, et voila! I finally had the time. My sis-in-law and I are also taking a textured metal jewelry class starting next week, so there's another thing that will be fun (and creative).

Before I started Little League, I had this crappy old plastic glove that had no padding at all, and no support. Before I hit 9 years old, I probably sprained my left thumb half a dozen times using that old thing.

I still have the Cooper leather glove my grandmother bought for me when I turned 9. It worked great.

That could be interesting - but methinks you would need to choose the group carefully. You wouldn't want a person getting pissed off about something and going off the deep end and ending up harassing and/or revealing personal info. This, I know about.

See, that's the sort of thing that happens to me when I try to use Siri to type out a text. Weirdest stuff. I don't think Siri understands Southern. I asked it once to find a "jewelry store near me", and it gave me an auto repair shop in a town 60 miles away. I could never get it to find a jewelry store near me. argh.

Did you hear Gov Scott's latest with the King of Spain?
[Link: blogs.miaminewtimes.com...]

Florida Gov. Rick Scott is taking his political follies to the international level.

King Juan Carlos I is feeling the fallout of one of the biggest controversies of his life for going on an elephant hunting trip in Botswana. It's a touchy subject in the country right now. Scott is on a trade mission to Spain this week and met with the King, and all the guv wanted to talk about was this hunting trip to Botswana. The king was not amused, and now the exchange has become a source of political comedy in Spain.
...
Now the scandal is the absolute last thing the king wants to talk about. However, Rick Scott apparently heard about the story but not the controversy.

"I've ridden elephants. I've never tried to shoot one," was literally the first words out of Scott's mouth as he entered the room to meet the king.

It goes on from there.

I feel bad that you guys elected him. Not that Bob McDonnell is any good but Scott strikes me as a huge bully with what I've been reading about him.

Rick Scott, as CEO of Columbia Healthcare, presided over the biggest Medicare fraud case in U.S. history and ended with the hospital giant paying a record $1.7 billion in fines, penalties and damages. He should be in jail.

Don't look at me!

These Republican millionaires play to the Tea Party's meme of "less government" and the idea of electing "non-politician types", as if they could ever be considered every-day-guys. "Businessmen know how to run a business! And the government is business!" Yeah, right. They want less government, alright. Less regulation, less taxes for the wealthy.

We got the Teabagger wave because Americans decided that Obama hadn't fixed everything in less than two years even though the GOP had 8 years to wreck shop. This seems to be a pattern in this country. Well, the larger problem with Florida is we have a Republican legislature that blocks a lot of education legislation and programs aimed at benefiting children, healthcare and the poor. Our child welfare system is in a terrible shambles still. We also could use some better Democrats. All of them, every last one, voted for "Stand Your Ground" and I don't get that.

We have Debbie W-S and Bill Nelson still. If he loses his seat, I'll be really shocked.

Scott closed many prisons to "increase the education budget by $1 billion." The closed prisons amounted to increased job losses in an already stressed out economy, plus overcrowding of the remaining prisons.

It's not mostly that, instead it has to do with the reputation of news agencies. In order for them to accept the risk such a story might be wrong, they either need a source that will go on the record or documentary evidence targeting Walker. Absent those things, running with it is not worth the risk of being wrong.

Palin wasn't "busted" out of office. She was the Gov of one of the smallest states in the US, a state with a fairly weak Dem Party. And you think they were able to hound her out of office. Absurd.

Agreed. It strains credulity to assert that Palin, with a decade of political experience and a run at Veep, was a serious politician suddenly struck by the vapors because of the same type of (largely?) nuisance lawsuits that governors and mayors around the nation deal with all the time.

Are we sure Obama will be re-elected?

Weak jobs report deepens U.S. economic concerns

A weak jobs report Friday raised questions about the vigor of the economic recovery, increasing speculation the Federal Reserve will take further steps to bolster growth and casting doubts about President Obama’s handling of the economy among voters, who consider it the No. 1 issue.

The nation’s employers added 69,000 jobs in May, the fewest in a year and well below the 150,000 economists had expected. The national unemployment rate rose to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent. In addition, federal labor officials slashed their earlier estimate of jobs created in April to 77,000 from 115,000.

I really think so. I mean the TV show on TLC and the fact her daughter has done Dancing With the Stars shows me that after the 2008 she realized she liked being a celebrity more than elected official. Plus, it's easier to second guess Obama's decisions when you don't have to make any real ones of your own.

Are we sure Obama will be re-elected?

Weak jobs report deepens U.S. economic concerns

Historically presidents with 45-50% approval ratings and 8% unemployment (or other bad economic indicators) have a hard time getting re-elected.

A majority still has a favorable impression of Obama, ie, he's still personally popular. BUT there's a good chance that many independents and moderates, especially the low info ones, will adopt the following attitude: "I don't hate Obama, but he hasn't fixed the economy, so I'll give the other guy a chance, even if he's a robot." Or something along those lines. I'd say Obama's chances at the moment are only 50-50, unfortunately.

133 freetoken  Fri, Jun 1, 2012 9:29:03pm
Some numbers: There were 69,000 payroll jobs added in May, with 82,000 private sector jobs added, and 13,000 government jobs lost. The unemployment rate increased to 8.2%. The household survey showed a strong increase in employment (422,000 jobs added), but the participation rate increased too (from 63.6% to 63.8%) so that pushed up the unemployment rate. The household survey job gains - and increase in the participation rate - are small positives.

More people want to work (thus the unemployment rate goes up), public employment is down (which the wingnuts ignore), etc.

Not sure much of anything at this point. Other than that no president since FDR has been reelected when unemployment has been above 7.2%, and his excuse was that the country was still going through the Great Depression.

I'm just trying to keep a level head about this. Personally, I think Obama's playing all the wrong notes right now with the "lowest spending" bit. The GOP's damning him anyway, working the numbers to show that spending still "exploded" and blaming even spending he'd inherited from the last guy in office on him.

Were I him, I'd be other there telling folks that focusing on the deficit, focusing on the debt, is a mistake. That those are long-term problems, ones that will not be fixed in two terms and sure as hell not in one. That what we should focus on is things that we can affect today, like the job situation. That there are miles and miles of roads, bridges, tunnels, pipes, and so forth that are in dire need of repair and replacement, but are being left to languish in a atmosphere of worry about other spending priorities. That, in the mold of FDR, what this nation needs now is the largest renovation program in its history, to make our infrastructure the envy of the world yet again.

Definitely, he should have been doing what you describe for the last 3 years, but shied away from it.

Cheney was right when he said deficits don't matter (politically). As long as people have jobs and the markets don't collapse, the deficit is an inconvenient abstraction to most people. Witness most of the 80s, much of the 90s and most of Bush's two terms. The only ones concerned with debt then were a few deficit hawks in Congress and oddballs like Ron Paul.

The march continues:

Abortion, levee, tax measures whip through Louisiana Legislature

[...]

The last-minute surge came as lawmakers cleared the decks for the last hours of the session, which must end Monday by 6 p.m. Legislators will take off Saturday before coming in Sunday to continue the battle over the state's $25.6 billion budget and the use of $204.7 million from the state's rainy-day fund, debates that are expected to consume much of their remaining time in Baton Rouge.

The abortion measure, filed by Senate President John Alario, R-Westwego, would restrict abortions to the first 20 weeks of a pregnancy. Current restrictions prevent abortion after a fetus is "viable."

Senate Bill 766, which contains the restrictions, passed the House unanimously early Friday before being sent to the upper chamber so senators could give their approval to changes made in a House committee. The Senate voted 38-1 to send the bill to the governor's desk, with only Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, D-New Orleans, casting a dissenting vote.

Rep. Frank Hoffman, R-Monroe, called the measure "another significant bill in Louisiana's pro-life history" and noted that the state was ranked at the top of a list of anti-abortion states this summer. The restrictions are expected to prohibit about 150 abortions a year, he said.

This was the most reported creationism story today, in Our Amercia America:

More Americans Continue to Accept Creationism Than Evolution

The percentage of Americans who believe God created humans in their present form within the last 10,000 years is about the same as it was 30 years ago, a new survey indicates.

Today, 46 percent of Americans accept this creationist explanation for human existence, a negligible change from the 44 percent who said they agreed with it in 1982, according to Gallup polls.

In the most recent poll, conducted by phone in May, 15 percent of Americans fell on the other end of the spectrum, saying they believed God played no part in human evolution, a process that had taken millions of years. Nearly all of the rest of the respondents, 32 percent, choose the third option, saying they believed humans had evolved, but that God had guided the process, a belief called "theistic evolution." [eds. - wrongly reported by LiveScience, btw.]

And yes, Gallup gets right to the point:

Majority of Republicans Are Creationists

Highly religious Americans are more likely to be Republican than those who are less religious, which helps explain the relationship between partisanship and beliefs about human origins. The major distinction is between Republicans and everyone else. While 58% of Republicans believe that God created humans in their present form within the last 10,000 years, 39% of independents and 41% of Democrats agree.

I suggest that this one fact is sufficient to understand the basic differences of which we discuss here.

There's the actual substance of the Gallup Poll, and then there is the reporting on it.

The latter is pretty sloppy, generally speaking. Most people don't understand the fine differences between, say, Intelligent Design and Theistic Evolution, and both Gallup and the reporting on the poll don't help.

More importantly, "statistical error" is misunderstood, and the Gallup sampling method leaves one with little insight into whether there are long term trends or not, given the sample size is too small to differentiate between trends of only 1 or 2 percent per 20 years, or simple sampling errors. or just random noise.

I think most people realize that Romney might get elected, with all that means-- a further destruction of the US's science standards, continued AGW denial, further widening of the income disparity, crippling our economy, appointment of judges and Supreme Court justices who will further break down barriers between church and state, sweeping restrictions against women's rights, etc. etc.

There's a lot of people in the country that actively want those things, or who stubbornly refuse to give up their Ayn Rand view of economics even with all the recent banking debacles and the failures of austerity policies. That they're wrong in the most easily demonstrable way doesn't take away their right to vote.

re: #198 RogueOne

Here's my view, I've been saying for the last couple of years that they deserve almost all the blame by focusing on secondary issues instead of the 2 top issues.

Oh, I see. How weird.

Health care reform is one of the most vital things to the health of our economy; sadly, HCR was crippled by the GOP.

Likewise, attempts at more stimulus spending would have been crippled by the GOP, so more attempts to help the economy in that way would have been rather futile.

If the president had embraced his own debt commission and not spent 2 years on HCR he wouldn't be in this position and the repubs wouldn't be looking at a total takeover.

Sure he would. The debt commission's recommendations aren't some magic bullet for the economy. I have no idea why you think they were. Furthermore, he couldn't just 'embrace' them, the GOP would have to go along as well, and the GOP are hostage-taking and then breaking the agreements made after that, anyway.

Is there any particular reason you choose to ignore the GOP obstructionism when apportioning blame-- other than it allowing you to blame Democrats?

Exactly, they played politics badly. They spent the first 2 years making sure a good crisis didn't go to waste. If you want to continue winning and advancing your agenda you have to bring in more than just your own constituency. Neither party can win a majority based solely on the votes of their own party members.

Clinton managed to get re-elected after getting his ass handed to him in '94 because he was still able to advance his agenda by not over-reaching. If you care about your parties "Issue C" you better make sure you take care of the majorities "Issue A".

But at a rally in Paterson to support Rep. Bill Pascrell, Clinton said his remarks got "twisted around."
....
"So today, because I didn't attack him personally and bash him, I wake up to read all these stories taking it out of context as if I had virtually endorsed him, which means the tea party has already won their first great victory: 'We are supposed to hate each to disagree.' That is wrong."

Eric Cantor, Mitch McConnell, Karl Rove, Frank Luntz and a dozen other top Republicans had a dinner meeting in DC THE NIGHT OF THE INAUGURATION to plan how to obstruct Obama. Before he had a a chance to propose a single piece of legislation, before he had a chance to submit a single nominee to the Senate, the GOP had already determined to oppose every single thing on strict party line votes, to bring the full force of party discipline to bear, on Every. Single. Thing.

Mitch McConnell announced, publicly, that their single highest priority was to deny Obama a second term. Not to work towards consensus legislation, not to get the economy back on track, not to advance any legislation of their own preference... but just to block this president.

Four different Senators took turns pretending they might go along with the stimulus package if only they got this item taken out, or that concession, or yadda yadda, Olympia Snowe went through it line by line for weeks stripping it down, before finally giving it one vote in committee to take it to the floor (not that they needed any R votes in committee, but the president wanted *desperately* to try to reach out to any possible GOPer who'd speak to the Dems)... and it still got 0 Republican votes.

Anonymous holds on appointees, slow-rolling even assistant to the 3rd undersecretary of whosiwhatsit. Filibustering motions to even consider possibly discussing the possibility of opening discussion of bills. Some of the filibustered appointees were so uncontroversial that when they finally came to a vote they passed 94-2, but it took an extra 4 months to get that vote. Etc.

There is literally nothing Obama could have said or done that would have made the Republicans any less obstructionist. What they should have done is adopted filibuster reform on day one of the session, as proposed by two of the Freshman D senators -- to make filibusters something the R's would have to actually stand up and talk through and explain themselves on camera. Or failing that, to have recognized sooner what was happening, and just hardballed their own party discipline and jammed through as much of their agenda as was physically possible in the 4 months they had their filibuster-proof majority.

re: #210 sagehen

I'm not trying to deny that the Republicans haven't exactly acted in good faith here but for 2 years they had an absolute majority and they chose to push for pet issues instead of dealing with what the majority in the country thought they should have been doing. Clinton managed to get things done while simultaneously dealing with Newt Freaking Gingrich as the Majority leader. That's a lot more difficult than dealing with Emo-Boehner as the minority leader.

And lets not lay all the blame for the discord strictly on republicans here. It was the president who said "I won" and the republicans could get on the bus but they were going to have to sit in the back and it was his chief of staff that laid the groundwork with "don't let a good crisis go to waste". They desperately wanted to get HCR done and ran with it while they had a huge majority. It was a major tactical error. Not only is it going to be struck down but it turned the country into a democrat wasteland in 2010 and they're looking at losing control of everything this year after it looked like the Republican party was dead in '08. They had the repubs on the ropes and not only let up on them, they handed them a bludgeon to beat them into submission.

Love, Ire, and Song - Frank Turner

......
Well it was bad enough the feeling, and the first time it hit
When you realised your parents had let the world all go to shit
And that the values and ideals for which many had fought and died
Had been killed off in the committees and left to die by the wayside
But it was worse when we turned to the kids on the left
And got let down again by some poor excuse for protest
Yeah by idiot fucking hippies in 50 different factions
Who are locked inside some kind of 60's battle re-enactment
And I hung-up my banner in disgust and I head for the door
......
Then where's the harm spending an evening
In manning the old barricades, so come on old friends to the streets
Let's be 1905 but not 1917, let's be heroes, let's be martyrs, let's be radical thinkers
Who never have to test drive the least of their dreams
Let's divide up the world into the damned and safe
And then ride to the valleys like the old life brigade
And straighten our backs and we won't be afraid
And they'll celebrate our deaths with a national parade
.....

I can't understand the adherence to Ayn Rand by the Right. She was anti-religion and very much Pro-science. I don't think her economic policies were quite what the Right thinks they are. She seemed to think every one could or would want to succeed if given the freedom to compete. Strange idealist, but I never saw her as Right Wing --she believed in abortion for Bob's sake.

They can be selective in their views of anyone they idolize, be it Ronal Reagan or Ayn Rand.

And yes, a lot of Americans are not only not troubled by the fact, but actively seeking to erase all the gains we have made in women's, minority and gay rights back by at least five decades.

The Democrats need to make that point very clear.

Troubling to our eyes, but on reflection, we Americans have to realize that other nations have a justice system that is not based on simply punishment, but also on removing criminals dangerous from society and attempting to reform them.

LAPORTE, Ind. — A northern Indiana school district has responded to an $18.7 million lawsuit from the family of a teenage girl who had sex with her volleyball coach, saying she voluntarily engaged in the relationship and assumed all risk.

The family filed the lawsuit last week, maintaining LaPorte Community Schools officials ignored signs the two were involved in a relationship. The lawsuit says the district 25 miles west of South Bend didn't properly supervise its employees or provide a safe environment for the girl.

Robert Ashcraft was sentenced to 21 years in prison last July on charges of sexual misconduct and child seduction.

Should he go to prison for a couple decades and the family be awarded $18M? That's a tougher question in my mind. It almost gives someone a financial incentive to lie.

Remember this story from last week?
Brian Banks' rape conviction vacated

In an initial meeting with him, she said she had lied; there had been no kidnap and no rape and she offered to help him clear his record, court records state.

But she refused to repeat the story to prosecutors because she feared she would have to return a $1.5 million payment from a civil suit brought by her mother against Long Beach schools.

During a second meeting that was secretly videotaped, she told Banks, "'I will go through with helping you but it's like at the same time all that money they gave us, I mean gave me, I don't want to have to pay it back," according to a defense investigator who was at the meeting.

You ignored two things.

First of all, the Mao example.

Second is that there is no clear distinction between one wacky view and another, since it's a continuum. So where exactly does one stop? That's the point of my comment. Where is the demarcation? I happen to think that a child inculcated in YEC ideology is crippled, in a way. Yet I do not propose taking him away.

Also, it seems the children were taken away merely because of the names. If he named them John and Mary, he would be able to instill in them whatever ideology he liked.

Court records also show that the oldest child, Adolf, frequently threatened to kill people.
The mother reportedly had also once given a note to her neighbour saying she was terrified of her husband, who had threatened to kill her.
The Campbells have previously defended the names, saying they chose them simply because they liked them and they were unique.
Campbell said he named his son after the Nazi leader as 'no one else in the world would have that name'.

I doubt that would have been the right decision merely because of ideology. Because if we agree to take away children because of ideology, I have a long list of pernicious ideologies ready that covers hundreds of millions children worldwide...

re: #263 ggt

Court records also show that the oldest child, Adolf, frequently threatened to kill people.
The mother reportedly had also once given a note to her neighbour saying she was terrified of her husband, who had threatened to kill her.
The Campbells have previously defended the names, saying they chose them simply because they liked them and they were unique.
Campbell said he named his son after the Nazi leader as 'no one else in the world would have that name'.

Man, why the hell didn't the judge cite this as his reason?

re: #266 RogueOne

True but the scenarios aren't all that different. In the student/teacher case there isn't any suggestion that it wasn't consensual. If students know they can get paid millions for sleeping with their teachers... I don't know. It feels like a situation just begging to get exploited.

The teacher should have said, "No" and gone to his superior.

Sleeping with an underage student doesn't require prison time?

EDIT: Age of consent is 16 in IN, so the teacher officially had sex with an underage student.

But I’m old enough to be jaded.
I’m of the age where I want things to change
But with age my hopes have faded.

If I was old I could say I’d seen it all before.
In short, I’m tired of giving a shit.

OK, I missed that she is 15. I happen to think the reasonable age of consent is 16. But age aside, and looking at merely the teacher-pupil dynamic (which is not all this case is about), firing and fining is enough. E.g. a teacher and a 18 y.o. pupil.

Local news. This is sort of a novel argument:

Girl could have avoided sex with coach, school district argues
[Link: www.indystar.com...]

This item is why I assumed she was not underage (without looking further). How can one argue legally that she assumed all risks, etc., if legally there was no consent? Quite absurd. So I thought this was a teacher-student "legal" sex brouhaha, like another recent case. So the school district's position is not tenable.

re: #245 I'm back in the USSR (sigh)

I've been just thinking about that. On the surface the decision seems like a no-brainer.
But then, where does one stop? Should the state take away someone's children if they name them after Mao? What if the parents name their children normally, but still indoctrinate them with Nazism? And if indoctrinating one's children with wacky stuff is a no-no, then shouldn't the state take away children of young-earth creationist wackos? What about the Phelps family?
IOW, what are the standards? Where does one stop?

More information is needed. For example;

HOLLAND TWP. — Fearing for her life, Deborah Campbell wrote a chilling letter to authorities, telling them to investigate her husband if she turned up dead.

"If anything may happened to me please do an altops on me b/c My husband has done something to me," the letter read. "Im afread that he might hurt my children if they are keeped in his care."

Investigators later found more ominous signs in the family’s Holland Township home in Hunterdon County: the bedroom windows were nailed shut and her husband kept the only working cell phone.

[...]

Case workers reviewed police reports documenting calls about loud arguments in the house, as well as the letter Deborah Campbell wrote and tape recordings of other arguments a neighbor provided, according to court papers. A DYFS worker also noticed the nailed bedroom windows, according to the court documents.

"The case worker tried to persuade the mother to leave the home and go to a safe place that DYFS would provide, but she refused," the decision said.

A DYFS worker also relayed information about the children after they were removed from the home.

"The boy had been aggressive with his sisters, and at one point took a vacuum cleaner to his sister’s throat saying ‘I’m going to kill you,’" according to court papers. The boy also threatened to kill the foster mother and had been aggressive at school, the court papers said. During the hearings that followed the Campbells’ loss of custody, the mother disavowed the letter, saying she had written it only as an outlet for her anger. She went on to describe her husband as a "loving, caring father who had never hurt her or the children."

There's a lot of "government overreach" out there. But the amount that actually exists is a small fraction of what libertarians see. A basic assumption should be that a judge would not be ruling on such a case purely on the basis of the names a father gives to his kids. Sure, trust but verify, but Rogue is frequently looking for these kinds of examples to advance a larger argument, and so confirmation bias should also be a baseline hurdle.

In this situation, it sure looks like naming his kids as a tribute to Naziism was an very solid indication that giving him custody is certainly problematic. In contrast, Rogue seemed willing to interpret the case as an indication of the majority dictating how kids should be raised - without doing a very basic Internet search.

Well, that's my point. Prison for sex with a minor is obvious.
I don't believe in prison for a mere teacher-student relationship, however (if it's indeed consensual and is not initiated by a teacher - but that can be a problem in any situation, e.g. in an employer-employee relationship). Such a relationship is obviously unprofessional, thus improper. But to put the woman (or man) in prison for it?

Well, I'm actually close to the view that the names alone are sufficient for such a decision. I'm probing the limits of this, however. Open question for me.

I'd say it's reasonable that someone naming their kids in tribute to genocidal murders is valid grounds for an investigation. That seems like a reasonable limit to me. Custody decisions should never be made without a thorough investigation.

As for what comprises grounds to take away custody, there are certainly obvious extremes, but many of those decisions take place in very complex contexts. The bar for taking kids away from parents should be set pretty high, and most courts try to err on the side of caution when considering taking kids away.

Sure - over-reach by courts exists, and while I'm not big on authority, I feel that there is a pretty widespread phenomenon where people have a default conclusion that over-reach is taking place. My confirmation bias is that legitimate concern about government over-reach is being swamped by a binary approach to government authority - with pretty deleterious results.

How crazy and ignorant has the GOP base become? Feast you eyes on this
uber-guano selection at Freeperland (if you dare):

Was Obama's Father a Mau Mau?

That the father of our president was a Kenyan Communist is a well documented fact--but little is known about his initiation into this proven evil ideology. At his age Barack Obama senior had to have been introduced to the Chinese Communist (Mau Mau being an affectionate shout-out to the murderer of tens of millions Mao Zedong) version of socialist tyranny in the late 40s or early 50s. Cynically exploiting the primitive phobias and superstitions of the Kikuyu, the Kenyan Chicom Commisars of the Mau Mau made recruits do horrible, depraved and damning things during "oath" ceremonies so that they were convinced disobedience would result in their paying for the terrible sins they commited during the initiations.
What occured during these Mau Mau "oath" ceremonies would make the Marquis De Sade blush--and I think these traumatic "Dreams From My Father" may have influenced our president in negative ways--no I don't actually "think" that.

This is pure fantasy. No reputable scholar has ever asserted that the Mau-Mau had more than the haziest affiliation with international communism, let alone Chicom commissars. Even the most rabid British propagandists did not claim the Mau-Mau were communists. Some wingnut has heard the name, noted its phonetic similarity to "Mao" and concluded that Chicom advisors were training and organizing the Kenyan insurgents.

Nice,,, but I need to be near an ocean or at the least, a body of salt water

We're deciding whether it's going to be South Carolina (where we have a condo) or the Gulf Shores Alabama area where we have a small plot of land

NATO rescues aid workers held by Afghan militants

It was a risky but successful operation: British and other NATO forces stormed a cave tucked in the mountains before dawn Saturday and rescued two foreign female aid workers and their two Afghan colleagues being held hostage by Taliban-linked militants.

Helicopters, flying under the cover of darkness, ferried the rescue team to extreme northeastern Afghanistan where they suspected the hostages were being held. After confirming the workers were there, they raided the site, killed several militants and freed the hostages, ending their nearly two-week ordeal.

re: #317 Shiplord Kirel

The voice of reason rears its unwelcome head at Freeperstan:

Probably the reason he was not a Mau Mau. Plus old man Obama was a Muslim, not a religion common amongst the Kikuyu ethnic group who constituted the Mau Mau. The Kikuyu political leader at the time of the Mau Mau uprising was Jomo Kenyatta. Kenyatta was imprisoned by the British at the time, but they couldn’t definifly connect him to the Mau Mau. However, from the time of independence for Kenya till his death in 1978, President Jomo Kenyatta was as staunch a US ally you could get in Africa. Some Navy vets of the time might remember port calls in Mombasa. Kenya was solidly on the side of the West during the Cold War.
The Kikuyu’s religion was animist, but the vast majority have become Christians over time. The Kikuyu are not Muslim. Thus Obama was not a Kikuyu, and if not a Kikuyu not a Mau Mau.

and more....

Both sides, the British and the Mau Mau, were anti-Communist. As I stated above, Kenyatta was a faithful US ally against the USSR his entire presidency until his death.Even today the Kenyan military is in combat against the Jihadists in Somalia. Now Nyerere of Tanzania was a true Communist. His last act was to instigate the Congo Wars of the 1990’s.

The freeper faithful are having none of it though:

The Mau Mau were created by the Communists even if their mission may have been confined to either expelling or exterminating the white settlers who were considered by universal communism as Capitalist imperialists.
The Mau Mau may have reformed into mere mild socialists (like the British only from a different tack) later but their Chicom origins are clear.
And Obama’s daddy was in the thick of it when the M&Ms were murdering black Bolsheviks. (emphasis added)

Note the difference in tone, with easily verifiable facts cited in the one case, and a series of unsourced, inflammatory claims in the other. This reminds me of the unfortunate Texas Tech history student who declared that the Spanish-American war was the result of "communist aggression."

We are not a Political Action Committee but rather a Presidential Advertising Committee working hard to communicate President Obama's vision. If you believe in the American Dream, help us help the President Reunite America. Learn more at Facebook.com/ObamaSuperPac

If you click on "Accomplishments" you'll see it leads to the site in question. Considering they and Webber are supposed to be in advertising, they're doing a pretty piss poor job.

You would think if "someone had to be arrested" the authorities wouldn't pick people that "Most of the men acquitted Saturday come from the same stock as Shahzad — wealthy, urban, educated and with careers in computers, telecommunications and graphic design. Mughal was running a large computer dealership in Islamabad before his detention, instead, round up the "usual suspects"

Um, under such scenario people who come "from the same stock as Shahzad" and, in fact, may have connections of whatever nature to him - from wholly innocent and casual, to more private, to that of accomplices, would be the best targets for investigations and arrests. Not saying this is what happened, but it would be silly to argue that they have such competent police investigators and such incompetent prosecutors and judges. If the system is rotten it's usually in all aspects.

Honestly, that can happen here, minus the torture part. If your best buddy gets arrested for something bad, the cops will likely want to talk to you. If they do, don't talk to them without a lawyer, because they don't have to tell you if they think you're involved.

I do agree with this part of what Goldberg said:

Goldberg has also recently said that he does not believe Mitt Romney, his favored candidate in the 2012 U.S. presidential election, is enough of a “hip cat” to win the youth vote. He told Fox News anchor Jon Scott last month that instead of appealing to youth voters, Romney should simply rely on their lack of enthusiasm for President Barack Obama and focus on appealing to other demographics.

Mitt Romney is the classic 'Organization Man' and he is never going to convince anyone that he is something else. There's no shame in being such a person, but it does mean he needs to rely more calculations of interest and anger directed at Obama to win. An 'Org Man' simply is not going to make people enthusiastic.

b) KT is obsessed with drones; c) KT called the guys who've been let off in court right now and who may be innocent (or some of them may be), "terrorists" (apparently he would approve of droning them). So why would I assume that what he wrote is a joke, esp. if there is no apparent meaning to the alleged joke?

If it was a joke, it was a pretty stupid and meaningless one, and moreover, it would be sufficient to write in response to my question, "it's a joke, dummy", instead of engaging in drama about "creepy stalker files" and whatever.

Duelists

In a perpetual personal feud, Duelists generally don't menace anyone but each other, unless, of course, another Warrior foolishly gets between them. They may not even remember what started the fight, but not they cordially loathe one another and seize every to go at each other. When the other Warriors eventually weary of their endless kvetching the Duelists will be shouted down or Nanny will ban them. Even after getting the heave-ho from one forum, however, it is not unusual for them to seeking each other in other forums to renew their fight.

TRANSLATION (seeing as how all of a sudden you seem to need them) There are more options than the two you offered!

Such as?

Also, I did not ask for a translation of *your* comment. Obviously. We're talking about the comment that started the brouhaha.

Is that a trick question?

I never stated otherwise

You said there are more options beyond simply not knowing what KT meant and knowing, but not explaining for the purposes of trolling me. What are those options?

506 sattv4u2  Sat, Jun 2, 2012 1:51:00pm

Well, I did,, except I didn't!

What I mean is, the "translation" I did provide in 500 was about my 498,, but all others were in reference to the "brouhaha" comment

Knowing and not posting, while continuing this conversation is exactly trolling.

Um, no. You claim that it's a sarcastic reference, but you've never explained how so and to what.

Yes, you've repeated it for the 4th time now. You've never explained how what he wrote is logically connected to what I wrote in a "sarcastic" way. For sarcasm to work there has to be a relation of some sort. What was the point of the alleged sarcasm in this instance?

I've just lost a lot of respect for Wonkette. When I click on your link, I found this obnoxious screed against George W. Bush. It's a ugly attack based on Bush's official painting, of all things. It's a hateful reminder that BDS is still alive.

Note: Not attempt at equivalence was made in this post, so the Magical Balance Fairy was not summoned.

It was a child saying childish things.

Do you have any sense of humor? If you're taking Wonkette seriously, then your synapses are misfiring. The article was a parody along the lines of what Colbert and Stewart do.
