Live Video: Transit of Venus

An inverse eclipse
Science • Views: 28,566

In about 25 minutes, Venus will pass in front of the Sun (from the perspective of us humans here on Earth), in a rare occurrence called a “transit of Venus.” There won’t be another event like this for 105 years. Here’s a Google+ chat video from Universe Today, that will feature live views of this event from specially equipped telescopes.

Palin Headlines RightOnline Conference, 'Tribute to Andrew Breitbart'

Former Alaska governor and vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin will headline this year’s RightOnline conference in Las Vegas. The conference, which will be held June 15-16 in Las Vegas and is sponsored by Americans for Prosperity, will feature sessions from video journalist and ACORN and voter fraud-fighter James O’Keefe, pollster Scott Rasmussen, and online icon Michelle Malkin.

Drudge cites exit poll data, without the information

The Drudge Report this afternoon breathlessly reports that exit polls from Tuesday's recall election show Gov. Scott Walker holding his seat.

One problem, though. He provides no information to suggest that. The link he provides sends readers to an Associated Press story.

BTW with an 8" Meade Saturn should look pretty impressive as well. Free software Stellarium shows you where everything in the sky is from your location if you plug in your GPS coordinates.

Had my nephew over a couple of weeks ago and showed him Saturn. He was awed by how well he could see the rings.

Sun just came back out. Going outside again. ttyl

You could use scissors to canibalize some cheap sunglasses. Cut out pieces to press-fit into eyepieces. That should eliminate ~50 to 80 percent of the light. With polaroid material, two pieces would allow up to ~99% or so light reduction. (For sun viewing, neither of these techniques is adequate.)

Romney campaign says possible email hack is being investigated

Gawker reported Tuesday that it had been contacted by someone who claimed to have hacked into the Republican presidential nominee's personal Hotmail account. Romney's email address was disclosed in a Wall Street Journal story published Tuesday that looked at how the former Massachusetts governor lobbied for health care reform in the state. Several of Romney's emails from his Hotmail account were included in public records obtained and published by the Journal.

According to Gawker, the alleged hacker offered no evidence that he had actually broken into Romney's email. But the Romney campaign is taking the threat seriously.

Romney campaign says possible email hack is being investigated

I suspect that Gawker is being all legal and coy about this because there is nothing, absolutely nothing, of any interest whatsoever in Mitt's personal e-mail account. If there were, it actually might make him seem a little more human. Unless he makes jokes about firing people, that would not be helpful.

The allure of being famous will fade after several years of living like a mole and seeing the same handful of faces every day.

Then we will get our reality murder, finally. The cage match humanity wants it.

Maybe but Gawker thought their stupid Fox mole with a video of Mitt talking about horses was important. There's no way to tell what they'll latch onto but I doubt it will have much impact.

It's as retro as you can get and still have e-mail. It suits his Leave-it-to-Beaver persona perfectly.

I'm not gonna sit here and act like I don't think it is funny he got hacked, BUT it is his private email and he should expect some privacy there. That should be off limits to anyone else unless there is reason to believe the law has been broken and the account seized for evidence.

Gateway Dullard posting as fact, an anonymous phone call sent in to a wingnut radio show.

Wisconsin Democrats Are Busing in Supporters From Minnesota for Recall Vote (Video) …Update: Michigan Too!

Democrats in Wisconsin are busing in supporters from Minnesota today for the recall vote against Governor Scott Walker.
On Twitter Democrats say they are driving in from across America.

There’s more… A man called into the Chris Plante Show today. He said Democrats are giving away free stuff to supporters who go vote in Wisconsin. The caller said Democrats have four buses coming into Wisconsin from Michigan to vote Democrat....

If you type something on a machine more modern than a Remington typewriter (and remembered to destroy the ribbon and inspect the roller) your expectation of privacy is misplaced.

Well, so we have one more hour of spurious Drudge headlines... until the next outrage explodes upon our scene.

In the mean time, I see the story about the NRO gifting a couple of space telescopes (with mirrors roughly the same size as Hubble's) upon NASA is getting some coverage. I doubt NASA will be able to make use of them, as launch and operations costs will probably be too much.

Applied my google-foo to this appalling case. Dr. Linda Roberts is a relentless twitter troll and the subject of a great deal of commentary (all negative) at secularist and gay websites. It appears though that there may not be such a person. "Dr. Linda Roberts" claims to be the widow of Keith Roberts (1971-2012) and the usernames are the same. There is no online obituary for Keith Roberts in the past couple of years. Quite a few commenters speculate that Linda and Keith are the same person, as is their alleged teenage son, one Landon Roberts.

Hotmail has always been code for tech lepers and uncle fuckers. If he was old, senile and thought that AOL owned the internet that would be understandable, but Hotmail? That's just sad.

In the mid-sixties, I bought a copy of Mr. Maksutov's scientific paper about his elegant new design, wherein all the optical surfaces were spherical --the easiest shape to make accurately.
