Amazing HD Video of the Venus Transit From NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory

Dance of the spheres
Science • Views: 27,414

Without exaggeration, this is one of the most amazing and beautiful videos I have ever seen. The full-screen 720p version is mind-blowing.

Youtube Video

Launched on Feb. 11, 2010, the Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, is the most advanced spacecraft ever designed to study the sun. During its five-year mission, it will examine the sun’s atmosphere, magnetic field and also provide a better understanding of the role the sun plays in Earth’s atmospheric chemistry and climate. SDO provides images with resolution 8 times better than high-definition television and returns more than a terabyte of data each day.

On June 5 2012, SDO collected images of the rarest predictable solar event—the transit of Venus across the face of the sun. This event happens in pairs eight years apart that are separated from each other by 105 or 121 years. The last transit was in 2004 and the next will not happen until 2117.

The videos and images displayed here are constructed from several wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet light and a portion of the visible spectrum. The red colored sun is the 304 angstrom ultraviolet, the golden colored sun is 171 angstrom, the magenta sun is 1700 angstrom, and the orange sun is filtered visible light. 304 and 171 show the atmosphere of the sun, which does not appear in the visible part of the spectrum.

Mitt Romney: Obama Slowed The Recovery On Purpose

At a campaign appearance in San Antonio, TX Wednesday, Mitt Rommey accused President Obama of slowing down the economic recovery on purpose in order to get his health care plan passed.

Yeah, thats the ticket. He set up the GOP to act like a bunch of assholes and obstruct him at every turn as part of a master plan. Brilliant.

Actually, I can see how he's hoping voters will read this, that it will play to the voices of "experts" who say Obama let the economy languish to pursue the ACA, that if he'd been "serious" about the economy, things would have picked up faster and been more vibrant.

A same-sex union ceremony was performed at Fort Polk army base on May 19 by a military chaplain.

Unless Congress intervenes and prohibits the use of military facilities for these counterfeit rituals, they will proliferate like cheat grass. The time to stop this nonsense is now.

So they got married weeks ago, yet somehow, the sun still rises in the East, a horde of demons has not pulled us down into the nether realms, nor has the military collapsed into one big homo erotic orgy?

HOW CAN THIS BE? Surely 2 women legally marrying on a military base breaks at least one of the seals holding back Armageddon?

I once looked at the sun through a welders helmet, and saw something very similar to the photo below. The sun was a perfectly round orange coin, and there was a black dot in front if it. I always wondered if I was seeing the silhouette of a planet.

I don't see any planet it could have been during the timeframe, so maybe a huge sunspot.

Hans Bethe and the Carbon Cycle

For his role in working out the energy source for stars more massive than the sun, the carbon cycle, Hans Bethe received the Nobel Prize in 1967. Bethe was one of the outstanding young scientists who fled Nazi Germany in the 1930's. One of the fascinating stories about Hans Bethe is that after submitting his article about the carbon cycle to the Physical Review, he became aware of a $500 prize for the best unpublished paper about energy production in the stars. He asked Physical Review to return his paper, proceeded to win the prize and paid a finder's fee of $50 to Robert Marshak who had told him about it. Bethe recounts "I used part of the prize to help my mother emigrate. The Nazis were quite willing to let her out, but they wanted $250, in dollars, to release her furniture. Part of the prize money went to liberate my mother's furniture."

This may have impressed his wife-to-be as much as him telling her, I know why the stars shine --at a time when, if anyone else had used such a line, they'd have been lying.

Proton-Proton Fusion

This is the nuclear fusion process which fuels the Sun and other stars which have core temperatures less than 15 million Kelvin. A reaction cycle yields about 25 MeV of energy.

Gov. Rick Scott: voter purge lawful, feds are wrong and breaking the law

In a sharply worded letter, Scott’s administration claimed the Department of Justice doesn’t understand two federal voting laws at the heart of the dispute and was protecting potentially illegal voters more than legal ones.

Florida also accused another federal agency, the Department of Homeland Security, of violating the law by denying Florida access to a federal citizenship database.
.....
About 500 people in Miami-Dade have been found to be lawful citizens and voters, and 13 noncitizens have been found. Two of them might have voted and could face prosecution. The county has been unable to verify the citizenship of more than 1,100 others.

Just after midnight on July 1, 2011, Patrick Frey, a deputy District Attorney in Los Angeles and a conservative blogger who writes under the name “Patterico,” heard a pounding at his door as sheriff’s deputies arrived to investigate a call from Frey’s home about a man who claimed he had killed his wife. But no one in Frey’s home had been killed, and no one had made a phone call to the police.

“It’s a phone call that could have gotten me killed,” Frey wrote on his blog about the incident.

Frey was cuffed by police while they woke up his wife, who was asleep in their room, and questioned her about the safety of the children. Helicopters swarmed overhead with searchlights as the sheriff’s deputies investigated.

Frey told ABC News he received email threats prior to the SWAT-ting incident.

Late last month, Erick Erickson, the editor of the conservative site RedState.com, was the victim of the same type of targeting. He had written about Frey’s case just a few days before.

And a hit of acid makes it even more scarier.

Revelations is not scary.

People that construct their morality on the basis of the teaching of Bizarro Jesus as codified by his prophet Tim LaHaye are terrifying.

Emmmie, please reach out to Mitt's peeps and tell them the blatant lying isn't doing him any favors.

Sorry, you are the only connect I have. I'd not ask if I had others.

I know exactly one person who knew Mitt twenty years ago.

And she's currently coping with a Mother who just had a stroke and brain surgery, so I doubt she's doing anything politically.

I also have no idea what, specifically, you are talking about.

I can't find the thing I read today where Mitt said that Pres. Obama wants the economy to fail. Maybe that was made up?

“[h]e blames Congress, he goes after Congress, but we remember the president’s own party had a super majority in both houses for his first two years, so you can hardly blame Congress for the faults that he’s put in place himself, and so he’s casting about looking for someone to blame and just hasn’t been able to find anybody — whether it’s the ATM machines or the tsunami or Europe.”
And what is Obama blaming Congress for, exactly? Why, for not passing ... his jobs plan, which Romney says Obama lacks. So Obama is at fault for not having a jobs plan, and is simultaneously at fault for urging Congress to pass his jobs plan, which proves he’s passing the buck.

He is so right. The tiny NASA budget is a national embarrassment. Those that whine about the expense are FOS. They lack vision and imagination. A half a cent on the dollar of budget. Contemptible really.

Those air force planes that are sitting on the deck because the pilots are scared too fly them aren't going to pay for themselves.

FIRE THEM ALL! Lol

They were all fired long ago, and that website and all of Mitt's social media was outsourced.

93 Daniel Ballard  Wed, Jun 6, 2012 6:18:39pm

re: #90 Kragar

As soon as they are fixed, they will begin to pay for themselves. As soon as they are actually needed in a fight they will certainly pay, just as our older air supremacy planes did. The budget is not this vs that. A half percent of the budget could easily be regained in any number of ways. NASA is the best bang for the buck we have to move forward. Like the JWST. And all those weather / science satellites. Which are being allowed to decline, threatening our ability to warn populations of deadly weather. Shame on us.

Had to do my first Twitter 'Block and Report today' on an asshole who Twitter Tag is '@lozerdoid' and who calls himself 'Chuckles The Clown'. To explain my action, I offer the following examples of the 'wit' of this hateful cretin:

@Lizardoid's definition of a "spam tweet" is anything that disagrees with him or exposes his lies. Yeah, he gets lots of spam #rumpswab

Then there's the little gem he aimed at me before I pushed the Block and Report Button:

So, having denounced my first counter-revolutionary, I decided to use the screen name feature for the first time.

"DF" you might want to switch back to your old posting name, one that suggests your current one has some extremely unpleasent connotations...

Caiden isn't much on spelling. Radio show must be cutting into homework time

"So Mr.President, so it is not decrimination, I want STRAIGHT PRIDE MONTH! I mean, fair is fair here!" -Caiden Cowger"

You could argue that he just forgot the "S", but it would still be spelled wrong.

Sorry, James. I had only wanted to give that lame "Twitter Gulag" meme the backhand. But I chose that temp nic planning to drop it if anyone objected, since I knew it might attract controversy. That objection having happened, its gone.

To be clear: My screen name "Tower Gunner of the Twitter Gulag" was not intended as any species of threat against any person.

Fair enough, but best not to do anything we don't have to that would pointlessly provide fuel for the fire on how they are being repressed.
