Announcing the Andrew Breitbart Bottom Feeder Awards for Right Wing ‘Journalism’

Rewarding hate

This weekend the right wing Heritage Foundation is hosting an awards dinner in honor of Andrew Breitbart, and the award for “Best Blog” will go to “Ace of Spades.”

The same “Ace of Spades” who said this about women’s rights advocate Sandra Fluke:

Every day, the right wing establishment shows us what they’re all about. Give that man an award!

We should have a 'vetting' procedure for this award, should we not? After all, Breitbart.com vets its stories with great care and precision.

Every day, the right wing establishment shows us what they’re all about.

Related: Fox News is beginning to smear Gabriel Sherman for writing a biography of Roger Ailes that hasn't been published yet. Some of the accusations sound familiar:

...Tantaros' attack on Sherman was baseless. All he did was recount the curious tale of how Ailes' wife had taken the unusual step of canceling his newspaper subscription based on what Sherman might write about her husband.

What's also chilling is the loaded language Tantaros used in her Tweets, words like "harasser" and "stalker," as she portrayed Ailes' wife as the object of Sherman's obsession.

The National Memo » Did Young Mitt Romney Impersonate A Police Officer? Another Witness Says Yes

When Mitt Romney was a college freshman, he told fellow residents of his Stanford University dormitory that he sometimes disguised himself as a police officer – a crime in many states, including Michigan and California, where he then lived. And he had the uniform on display as proof.

So recalls Robin Madden, who had also just arrived as a freshman, the startling incident began when Romney called him and two or three other residents into his room, saying, “Come up, I want to show you something.” When they entered Romney’s room, “and laid out on his bed was a Michigan State Trooper’s uniform.”

Madden, a native Texan who graduated from Stanford in 1970 and went on to become a successful television producer and writer, has never forgotten that strange moment, which he has recounted to friends over the years as he observed his former classmate’s political ascent. The National Memo learned of the incident from a longtime Madden friend to whom he had mentioned it years ago.

Said Madden in a recent interview, “He told us that he had gotten the uniform from his father,” George Romney, then the Governor of Michigan, whose security detail was staffed by uniformed troopers. “He told us that he was using it to pull over drivers on the road. He also had a red flashing light that he would attach to the top of his white Rambler.”

In Madden’s recollection, confirmed by his wife Susan, who also attended Stanford during those years, “we thought it was all pretty weird. We all thought, ‘Wow, that’s pretty creepy.’ And after that, we didn’t have much interaction with him,” although both Madden and Romney were prep school boys living in the same dorm, called Rinconada.

Heritage Foundation, Others, Oppose ADA Restoration Act

Have you been sitting quietly on the sidelines watching the ADA Restoration Act work its way through congress? The Deaf community and others cannot afford complacency in this battle. Large organizations such as the Heritage Foundation have now come out strongly against the Restoration Act. And many bloggers have followed suit in blogging against the ADA Restoration Act. That means it’s time for Deaf people to take action. And also for people–deaf or hearing, with or without disabilities–to write to their senators.

I’m looking for people (deaf or hearing, I don’t care) to please help by writing good rebuttals to some of the arguments used by the Heritage Foundation, the US Chamber of Commerce, or some of the bloggers around the web.

Haven't you yourself been granted accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act? Well, the puppetmasters who pull the strings of the GOP don't like it very much. But you vote for them anyway.

That was back in 2008. Thankfully, the ADA was a point of just pride for George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush, ever the loyal son, made sure that the ADA was in fact reauthorized and indeed enhanced.

Honestly, that is less about ideology and more about the fact that George W. Bush is still not remembered well. Jeb Bush is seen often enough within the party that I feel it correct to say its not 'The Bushes who are persona non grata, its one particular Bush who is, and would be regardless of ideology.

On June 26, 2006 Romney vetoed an improvement project with the price tag of $40,000 with his line item veto. The project would have allocated the money to Woburn Development Authority for improvements to an elevator to meet the standards set in the ADA.

Also on that day Romney vetoed an additional $25,000 to the Braintree, Massachusetts Council on Aging. The money was again proposed to meet improvements with the ADA.

In other words it's about pure, gutless expedience. If Bush was remembered the way the GOP actually thinks he should be then all would be well, but since he's not they play at making him the scapegoat for their own demonstrably destructive policies. It's easier to discard the man than the ideology of tax cuts, massive military spending and total deregulation he sold on their behalf.

It's sad really, in his own way Bush was a victim. A victim of his own ignorant mentality and the yes men he surrounded himself with to be sure, but still a victim. Honest introspection and self criticism simply aren't in the conservative toolkit.

They aren't in any political party's public toolkit,m and you know why: Give a fourteen minute presentation taking a self-critical assessment of a past action, and your opposition will ensure the thing people most remember is you saying "This is the mistake I made." Nobody can easily admit to error publicly, so politicians distort and BS their way around such points where they are in error.

I don't mind a politician or businessman having made a mistake in their past. The key is, do they recognize it was a mistake and did they learn from it. Unfortunately the gene that makes a person want to gain political power is the same one that forces them to deny having made mistakes, or at the least to minimize or rationalize them. Its an ego thing.

The jobs debate reminds me a bit of the chapter on the widespread drop in crime statistics across the USA in the book Freakonomics. Every police chief, mayor, governor tried to claim it was their policies that brought crime rates down. I'd love to see a data mining analysis on what really helped create and/or held back job creation these last couple years. Politicians are unable to do that sort of analysis. Miss Pennsylvania USA claims pageant rigged

The Miss USA pageant representative from Pennsylvania resigned her crown claiming the contest is rigged, but according to organizers the beauty queen was upset over the decision to allow transgender contestants to enter.

A posting on Miss Pennsylvania Sheena Monnin's Facebook page claims another contestant learned the names of the top 5 finishers on Sunday morning – hours before the show was broadcast.

Monnin claims the other contestant told her the names of the top 5 she spotted on a planning sheet for the telecast – and she decided to step down as soon as those same contestants were named during the show.

[...]

Donald Trump, who runs the Miss Universe Organization, called Monnin's claims that the pageant was fixed "totally ridiculous" in a live interview Wednesday on ABC's "Good Morning America" and said the pageant organization plans to sue Monnin for making the "false charge."

"We're going to be suing her now. She made a very false charge and she knows it's a false charge," Trump said.

Pageant organizers confirmed Monnin resigned, but said it wasn't for the reason she claimed.

According to a statement from the Miss Universe Organization, the contestant who Monnin claimed saw the sheet vehemently refuted Monnin's account.

The statement includes text from an email organizers said Monnin sent citing the decision to allow transgender contestants into the competition as the reason she's resigning.

A transgender contestant was initially denied entry to the Miss Universe Canada pageant, but Trump subsequently overruled that decision.

Since I'm going on about right-wing uber-hypocrisy, this one might qualify for an award - Crosswalk, a Salem Communications outlet, the same company that owns Hotair, Townhall, and such, promotes a story about abortions in India to scare us about government control:

Forced Sterilizations in India Hold Wider Warning About Government Abuse

"I gained consciousness around 12 or 1 in the night," Devanti Devi told a reporter for RT, a Russian news channel. "I was bleeding heavily and came home without being given any medicine." Devi's account is only the latest in a slew of emerging stories of forced sterilizations in India, where government leaders have long pushed sterilization as a form of birth control in a country with 1.2 billion people.

[...]

Yes, their source is RT, a Russian government owned enterprise which not so subtly (but occasionally quite subtly) carries forth agendas of the Russian government.

The article goes on to criticize western aid to address over-population, etc.

Now, force sterilizations are indeed a cause worth investigating, but this story is just another instance of the standard Salem Communications double-speak wingnut approach to the world.

The above mentioned hedonism-monger and friend of gamblers everywhere, Sheldon Adelson, looks to spend more money on the God-hawkers now dominating the GOP:

Sheldon Adelson Ready to Throw More Money Behind Republican Candidates

The Las Vegas casino magnate formerly known as the wealthy donor behind Newt Gingrich's tumultuous bid for the Republican nomination is ready to write more checks. Potentially large checks. Sheldon Adelson poured out more than $20 million to support Gingrich during his primary bid, and all he got for it was 132 delegates and some A+ pompousness.

A potential hitch for the Mitt Romney-affiliated super-PAC Restore Our Future, which is courting Adelson, is that Adelson said of the group's champion, he's "not the bold decision-maker like Newt Gingrich is.” But Adelson's apparent disillusionment with Romney may have been repaired with a roughly 45-minute meeting between the two at his Venetian Resort in Las Vegas last week, before Restore Our Future held a fundraiser there that included an "overview and strategy update," Politico reports. CNN writes that Adelson is now said to be "fully committed" to Restore Our Future.

According to CNN, Adelson previously discussed donating as much as $100 million this election cycle, but not necessarily toward only one candidate. [...]

This is right where I live, and I went outside to check. It is non-stop thunder and lightning, about 1 lightning bolt every second, and no stop in the thunder. This video appears to show renegade members of the political party and anti-Israel militant group Hezbollah reacting with extreme measures. The tattoo translates to "Oh Father of Abdullah, Hussein," referring to Hussein, a revered imam of Shiia Islam.

In the past four days, some 37,000 Syrians have fled Lebanon amid fears of this kind of persecution.

If that were so, then why isn't he asking for outside help, or at the least cooperating with the UN and/or Arab league letting them inbed with Syrian forces to see 1st hand!?!?

Seems the center of the protests has been Homs. The Lebanese border is the closest so that was the "natural" escape route, I would imagine

Unlike the Iraq situation where the Kurds were more or less centralized in one region and were protected via the "no fly zone" I'm not sure what protections can be set up for Assads opponents

Yes, their source is RT, a Russian government owned enterprise which not so subtly (but occasionally quite subtly) carries forth agendas of the Russian government.

The article goes on to criticize western aid to address over-population, etc.

Now, force sterilizations are indeed a cause worth investigating, but this story is just another instance of the standard Salem Communications double-speak wingnut approach to the world.

This is what is so stupid. Those for choice, including Margaret Sanger and Planned Parenthood --are for INDIVIDUAL CHOICE. Not government interference. But, of course, this is lost on the stupid and the brainwashed Fox Drones.

95 Lidane  Thu, Jun 7, 2012 5:10:40am

I can't imagine anything going wrong here:

Vlaams Belang to reward tipping off burqa offenders

One of the leading figures of the Flemish populist Vlaams Belang party, Filip Dewinter, announced that his anti-immigrants party will be offering a €250 reward to anyone who informs the police of women wearing burqas in public.

Dewinter stressed that the reward will “force the authorities” to implement the law on burqa prohibition regardless of the recent protests. He stressed that burqa is a “cloth prison for women” and reminded that Belgium has a law prohibiting wearing full-body covering burqas in public.

Spokesman of the Brussels metropolitan police said that policemen are implementing the law and added that the police was not informed of the reward offered by the Vlaams Belang. The law stipulates that burqa wearing is punishable by a €150 fine.

Socon issues should be the garnish, not the meat and potatoes, in this election. The economy and jobs are the major concerns, 'specially in light of last month's job numbers. No president since FDR has been reelected with unemployment over 7.2%. People who don't have jobs, don't have money, don't really pay much attention to rights or freedoms.

And that if Romney wants to put any sort of centrist economic policy through, he will have to cave in to the socons in his party on every woman, gay and minority-bashing proposal their ideologues can float.

True enough, but at the same time, the polls already show that fights over social issues are at best temporary wins. Months after all the fussing over birth control ended, polls have women slowly filtering back into the Romney camp, convinced that now that Santorum's gone, the threat has passed.

What you're gonna run into a lot in coming months is that running theme that says that Romney is a closeted centrist who, once he doesn't have the pressure of winning the election on his shoulders, will tell the socons to buzz off. Chipping away at that's gonna be a very long process, one that you're not gonna accomplish before November.

So the GOP is going to make the same sell that they made for Reagan, Bush, etc. Once they get into office they will throw the socon agenda under the bus when it comes to actually supporting social legislation.

Given the current nuttery in the House I think it won't occur. The social legislation will come from there anyways without the White House stumping for it. The difference will be that I doubt that a GOP White House will stand in the way and threaten a veto of any such legislation.

Right, I agree with that. The Obama campaign has been focusing on that recently. I read an article about them pointing out that he had very little job growth as governor and the deficit increased. If they pointed that out, I think maybe more voters would realize that Mitt isn't as well suited for the economy as he makes himself out to be.

I have been shooting BBs at them. They just jump when you hit them and hop a few feet. Chasing them away doesn't help either. They are all over in the mornings and evenings. My dogs like to chase the cat but have no interest in rabbits. If the fencing doesn't keep them out I will have to get a .22 rifle and shoot the fuckers.

Rats are a different story, those things have to die. When it comes to killing animals I'm a complete wuss. I bought glue traps one year (because bashing their brains in with regular traps seemed unnecessarily cruel) and ended up spending 30 minutes working to free a little mouse I caught so I could let it go outside. I switched to poison bait. That way they crawl away somewhere else to die and helps keep my conscious clean.//

India eyes increased role in Afghanistan

India is among regional powers eyeing a larger role in Afghanistan as the US prepares to pull back. Some Afghans worry about becoming a proxy battleground for India and Pakistan.

Some interesting possibilities here. Pakistan is already interfering in Afghanistan and waging a proxy war against India in Kashmir. If we keep up the drone strikes to deplete the Taliban then India could step in and continue to squeeze and contain Pakistan's terrorism operations. It might be a great way to permanently contain Pakistan's destabilizing influence on the region.

That's not a particularly good thing - to bring India into the mix increases the chances of fighting erupting across the Line of Control or a skirmish between the two escalating into yet another war. After all, we're talking about two countries that have fought 5 wars and countless skirmishes with the loss of life since the two countries gained their independence.

India (like most of the rest of the world) definitely has interests in seeing a more stable Afghanistan, but they likewise need Pakistan to remain stable and to do more to police the frontier provinces. India can't force Pakistan to do that, but the US is in a position to cajole.

Pakistan's governance of the frontier provinces is one of the big reasons for the ongoing destablization in Afghanistan as well as Pakistan. It's a relief valve for Islamabad to allow the Islamists to hold sway there - and not focus their efforts on taking over the Pakistani government.

Beer Run
[Link: reason.com...]

Former Edinburg, Texas, police officer Gilberto Montezano has pleaded guilty to official repression after taking a beer-filled ice chest from a driver during a traffic stop last year. He was sentenced to 18 months probation and a $500 fine. In 2010, Montezano was involved in a chase against traffic that ended with the suspect crashing into another vehicle, killing three of its occupants. That chase did not end his law enforcement career. Stealing the beer did.

Background on the chase:
[Link: www.themonitor.com...]

The chief said Montezano “made a judgment call” that night when he chose to pursue Tovar on the highway.

San Juan Police Investigator Rolando Garcia, whose agency is not involved in the Edinburg investigation, said it can often be difficult for officers to stop pursuits before the chase becomes dangerous.

“You start by thinking, ‘I want to get this guy’,” Garcia said. “That’s the key factor: Is the officer seeming a little bit too eager?”

Because no two chases are the same, it’s tough to say exactly when an officer should call off a pursuit. However, Garcia said, police must ensure that all chases are worth the crime initially committed.

Garcia said San Juan officers generally stop chasing burglary suspects if they can get close enough to the pursued vehicle to identify a license plate number.

“We need to take care of the community, the officer and the police department,” Garcia said. “The hardest thing for an officer to do is stop a pursuit.”

Woman charged with exposing privates at Pompano Beach intersection

POMPANO BEACH, Fla. -- A 35-year-old woman was arrested after stripping down at a Pompano Beach intersection and exposing her private parts.

Tracy Mabb was charged with exposing sexual organs in public and was being held in jail Wednesday on a $600 bond. She was also being held on a prior petit theft offense that allegedly took place April 8, according to Broward County court records.

Mabb began peeling off clothes while standing in the 800 block of South Dixie Highway about 5:40 p.m. Tuesday, according to a Broward Sheriff's Office report.

She pulled her long shirt up in front of drivers and pedestrians and exposed her entire body, including her breasts, vagina and buttocks, in a "complete vulgar and indecent manner," the report said.

She refused to put her shirt down and said, "I don't give a f---" about her actions, the report said.

Her mugshot is something else.

Pakistan Ponders Panetta's Visit to India

Independent security analyst Hasan-Askari Rizvi says that while Pakistan is still a regional player, the U.S. has other options, which means Pakistan's "relevance is decreasing."

He says Panetta’s talks with India on helping Afghanistan provide for its own security means Pakistan will have to ask itself what role it wants to play. “Will it continue with the current distrust and confrontation with the U.S., or it has to modify, keeping in view the kind of new developments that are taking place within the region," he said.

It looks like this is part of a hardball strategy against Pakistan to pressure them to play nice. If they don't get their shit together and start cooperating they are going to be surrounded by India. They are missing out on trade and development deals that are going to go to India instead. Pakistan needs to make a decision. If they decide to not cooperate we might as well had over Afghanist to India anyways because Pakistan is a useless ally.

He's got two Oscar bait roles coming out in Oscar season - Django Unchained and Baz Luhrman's Great Gatsby. He'll get his chances as both a lead actor and as supporting actor.

The Django Unchained movie seems to be a vehicle for Jaime Foxx and Chris Waltz, while the Great Gatsby allows Leo and Tobey Maguire to work their screen magic.

I thought Leo was quite good in The Aviator but should have won for Catch Me if You Can. At this point in his career, it seems that he can do no wrong in picking juicy roles.

Greek far-right Golden Dawn MP wanted for assault

Greek prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for the spokesman of the far-right Golden Dawn party after he slapped a left-wing politician in the face on live television.

Ilias Kasidiaris, who was elected to Greece's parliament in last month's elections, was debating with two female politicians on a chat show.

Video footage shows him throwing a glass of water at one of the women.

When the other intervened, he slapped her in the face three times.

Mrs. Lawhawk isn't a big fan of the KB movies, but I find them fascinating to watch back to back. Huge fan of Reservoir Dogs and Pulp, and Jackie Brown is seriously underrated. Inglorious Basterds is quite good mixing up the humor with the blood satisfaction of a revenge fantasy (which could apply to KB, a rip roaring rampage of revenge).

I was surprised how much I liked Death Proof. Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs are still my favorites.

The Matrix Reloaded scene made no sense. If they can move near-instantly and wraith-like along, why not just go to Neo's back seat and stab him in the ass?

I know, I know, the whole thing is pseudophilosophical gobbledegook so nothing has to make sense, but as a chase scene, when one of the groups can basically teleport it takes away from the drama of it.

Was listening to Hannity the other day on the way home from work, hosting another one of his circle jerks with guests that won't question a single word he says, and he's going on and on about some left-wing radio host who called some right-winger a slut. I knew the topic of Rush's saying the exact same thing about Fluke wasn't going to come up, but I amused myself anyway keeping an ear out. They did not disappoint -- a good 10, 15 minutes of 'oh how terrible and vile this speech is!' without a single peep about the Supreme Leader's practice of the exact same.

Oh my, Barbara Walters has some splainin' to do...

"Syria's Kim Kardashian" And Barbara Walters Pal *Did* Get Into Columbia Grad School

Okay, is it time for Barbara Walters to walk back her claim that the former aide to Syrian dictator Bashar Assad didn't get into Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs? Because the school has confirmed that "Syria's Kim Kardashian"—a.k.a. Sheherazad Jaafari—has been accepted into its program. FYI, SIPA doesn't have classes in genocide!

Hackers released emails from Jaafari's account, which showed a very friendly relationship the 22-year-old had with Walters where Jaafari, the daughter of Syria's ambassador to the U.N., asked her for help in landing a job at CNN. Also, Walters asks if Jaafari is still planning on attending Columbia graduate school and offers to help her—of course Jaafari said yes to that.

Thinking that Jaafari was intending on applying to the Journalism School, Walters ended up contacted Columbia J School Professor Richard Wald (Wald is a former ABC News executive about Jaafari—"She is brilliant, beautiful, speaks five languages. Anything you can do to help?"—and Wald wrote back, "Through the Admissions Office network, I will get them to give her special attention. I am sure they will take her."

On Tuesday, Walters apologized, "I did offer to mention her to contacts at another media organization and in academia, though she didn’t get a job or into school. In retrospect, I realize that this created a conflict and I regret that," but a Columbia spokesperson says, "Ms. Jaafari was admitted based solely on the submitted application materials. We cannot comment on an individual applicant’s materials, which are confidential."

Jaafari, who helped set up the ABC News exclusive with Assad, was fired because Assad felt blindsided by Walters' questions.

But will it bounce?

Check it out...

Approximately one half year ago, Orville, the pet tabby cat of Dutch artist Bart Jansen, sadly met his end when he was struck by a car. "We were very sad, and we mourned for a couple of days," says Jansen. "But then I thought we'd make a tribute to his name, and honor him by making him fly."

And how did Jansen do this? By having Orville taxidermied and turned into a remote-controlled helicopter. Now, writes Jansen on his website, Orville can "fly with the birds; oh how he loved the birds."

The Orville-copter was recently revealed at the KunstRai art fair in Amsterdam and viral fame followed soon after (Orville already has its own theme song). As is often the case, popularity has come with its fair share of detractors, PETA being among the most vocal. Says one PETA spokesperson, "It's a macabre way to honor a beloved family member. This is sick. Lay the poor cat to rest."

Jansen, however, will continue to honor Orville (and insult PETA) in his own way — by giving the cat more powerful propellers.

Fly on, Orville. Fly on.

UN springs into action
Pakistan advised to seek official investigation into US drone strikes

The United Nation's most senior human rights official has advised Pakistan to seek an official UN investigation into whether US drone strikes in the country are legal.

Navi Pillay, the UN's high commissioner for human rights, told Pakistan's prime minister he should invite the UN's special rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions to visit the country to examine the legality of missile attacks by remote controlled aircraft in the troubled tribal areas near the Afghan border.

The fact finding work of the UN's rapporteurs can often embarrass governments with their far reaching investigations into allegations of human rights abuses.

"Drone attacks do raise serious questions about compliance with international law," Pillay told a press conference in Islamabad.

"Ensuring accountability for any failure to comply with international law is also difficult when drone attacks are conducted outside the military chain of command and beyond effective and transparent mechanisms of civilian or military control."

"The girls said they are fine. They are under no threat and they have no fear," Mian Iftikhar Hussain told reporters, quoting the human rights activist Bari.

"The village elders assured us that the girls would suffer no harm," he added.

It's all pretty silly. I'm not sure if they have a technical point. We are conducting military operations in a country without their permission but I don't know what the rules are. There also might be some legal issues under international law regarding the assassinations and hit lists. It really doesn't make much difference because nobody's going to stop it anyways.

FBI looks into possible White House leaks

(CNN) -- The FBI has launched an investigation into apparent leaks of classified information involving a cyberwarfare program against Iran, a U.S. official said Wednesday.

FBI spokesman Paul Bresson had no comment on the reported investigation.

Sen. Saxby Chambliss, ranking Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said he was informed that an FBI inquiry was under way.

The senator from Georgia and other leaders of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees issued a joint statement Tuesday deploring the apparent leaks.

"In recent weeks, we have become increasingly concerned at the continued leaks regarding sensitive intelligence programs and activities, including specific details of sources and methods," said Chambliss; Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein, D-California; Chairman Mike Rogers, R-Michigan; and Ranking Member C.A. "Dutch" Ruppersberger, D-Maryland, in the statement.

"These disclosures have seriously interfered with ongoing intelligence programs and have put at jeopardy our intelligence capability to act in the future. Each disclosure puts American lives at risk, makes it more difficult to recruit assets, strains the trust of our partners and threatens imminent and irreparable damage to our national security in the face of urgent and rapidly adapting threats worldwide."

re: #260 Daniel Ballard

The UAVs are under the command of either the CIA or USAF, depending on the mission/target. There's coordination to some extent between the two, but it's also competitive as both want the ability to claim that they got the big targets.

R/MQ-1 Predators and MQ-9 Reapers are in use by both the CIA and USAF.

Since most airstrikes will not be confirmed by the military or CIA, each can use the other to claim plausible deniability over the attacks/assets involved and who the targets were unless they verify the target was eliminated.

Maybe, but these things usually end up as a partisan derpfest. Administrations leak things, often for public relations reasons. The article last week about Obama overseeing the kill list was almost certainly an intentional "leak" from the White House. It was their best campaign commercial yet.
