Fake Gaffe of the Day: ‘The Private Sector Is Doing Fine’

Wingnut blogs and talk radio pile on
Politics • Views: 20,473

Mitt Romney, the Republican Party, and right wing talk radio and blogs are all piling on in unison again (hey, wait; I thought they were supposed to be “silent” today?) about another completely bogus outrage related to guess who.

Here’s what President Obama said:

President Obama: The truth of the matter is that, as I said, we created 4.3 million jobs over the last 27 months, over 800,000 just this year alone.

The private sector is doing fine. Where we’re seeing weaknesses in our economy have to do with state and local government. Oftentimes cuts initiated by, you know, Governors or mayors who are not getting the kind of help that they have in the past from the federal government and who don’t have the same kind of flexibility as the federal government in dealing with fewer revenues coming in.

It’s blindingly obvious that Obama didn’t say the whole economy is “doing fine.” Ezra Klein has a good post on this if you want the wonky details, but Obama’s point was that job creation in the private sector is going fairly well, while the public sector is losing jobs.

It’s another one of those invented “gaffes,” that only looks like a gaffe if you pluck out one phrase — “the private sector is doing fine” — and completely ignore the context and the point being made.

Romney’s already hammering the “out of touch” angle, of course. But this is just more of the same dishonest spinning we’ve seen from him since the campaign began.

Romney’s already hammering the “out of touch” angle, of course. But this is just more of the same dishonest spinning we’ve seen from him since the campaign began.

Meanwhile, Romneybot's InTouch.EXE file seems to be corrupted, as at the same time he's hammering Obama on this, he's spouting off this:

Romney said of Obama, “he wants another stimulus, he wants to hire more government workers. He says we need more fireman, more policeman, more teachers. Did he not get the message of Wisconsin? The American people did. It’s time for us to cut back on government and help the American people.”

For those of you who don't remember, Willard spent the 1st anniversary of OBL's death by mugging for the cameras in front of a NYC firehouse with Rudy Giuliani at his side. And has made the financial plight of firefighters "under Obama" part of his campaign.

OK, so he put his foot in his mouth again. It isn't the first time and won't be the last.

Who cares?

Foot in mouth doesn't merit endless, looped stupidity.

And that applies to everyone.

The Recovery Act had 10's of billions to state and local governments that helped prevent/slow mass layoffs during the post recession budget crunches. Eventually the money tapered off, but at least the governments had more options for a time.

McDonnell admitted as much last week, that the stimulus funds did prevent Virginia from making a lot of painful budget decisions while the money lasted.

The stupidest part about this is, beyond the private sector creating decent amounts of jobs over the last couple years, but less so over the last couple months, in terms of their current record profits, record cash reserves and near record operating margins, they're doing way better than 'fine'.

9 mikec6666  Fri, Jun 8, 2012 2:38:30pm

Allow me to shit on the parade. The problem isn't that we have to few government jobs. Americans don't want bloated government. We have to few private sector jobs. He should have lead with this, "state and local governments have downsized operations leaving many out of work. "...the Obama administration has turned out to be anything but a big-government one"

...government employment is down 2.6 percent over the last three years, compared to a decline of 2.2 percent in the early Reagan years. That is a record.

That record, which will seem a dubious distinction to public-sector employees, is largely a result not of federal policy but of shrinking state governments. State employment fell 1.2 percent in 2011 — the largest percentage for any year since counting began in 1955. The number is down 2.2 percent over the last three years. It was up 1.2 percent during Reagan’s first three years, declining in only one of the years.

The private sector's put on 4.3 million jobs, enough to cover the losses since '09, when Obama took office. If you factor out the public sector job losses since '09, our UE would be down below 7.5% and Obama's reelection would be pretty much assured. It is, for lack of a better word, "fine."

What is causing this economic slump, what is dragging the UE numbers up and leaving monthly job posts so lackluster is continuing cuts in the public sector, pushed by dipshits like Romney who think the public sector a "drain" and think what America needs is to be privatizing those jobs.

The private sector isn't "fine" by any definition. Has it somewhat improved? Yes - but by no means can it be defined as fine. As for the public sector, your solution then would be a public sector hiring spree. How do you intend to pay for it?

Government Jobs Buoyed Bush’s Economy And Sunk Obama’s (CHART)

...To date, government cutbacks have led to 590,000 public-sector jobs losses under Obama. That falloff is finally slowing, but it hasn’t reversed, and locked in austerity measures suggest it won’t any time soon. At this point in Bush’s first term, by contrast, he’d benefited from 716,000 public-sector jobs gains. And over his first full term he benefited from 900,000 gains, almost fully offsetting private-sector jobs losses.

In the GOP Holy Bible in the Book of Job, it says that corporations will hire new workers only when the corporations are profitable.

And while the GOP beats the drum about how dismal things are for corporate America, in 2011 USA corporations made the highest profits since 1990. A large part of that were special tax deductions given to corporations in 2011, in particular 100% bonus depreciation for investments.

If the GOP assumption about profits and taxes were true, there would have been more new jobs, but obviously there are more considerations than just the last quarterly profit that goes into the decision to expand operations and hire more people.

Yet here we are, with the GOP doubling down on providing more tax breaks so that the Jobs Fairy will magically appear and increase employment levels. When the medicine doesn't work, just double the dose.

Pres. Obama was asked again about this whole beltway brouhaha during a press avail with Philippine President Benigno. He pretty much reiterated a lot of what he said from the earlier press conference:

[Link: www.npr.org...]

REPORTER: "Mr. President, Mitt Romney says you're out of touch for saying the private sector is doing fine. What's your response?"

PRESIDENT OBAMA: "Listen, it is absolutely clear that the economy is not doing fine. That's the reason I had the press conference. That's why I spent yesterday, the day before yesterday, this past week, this past month, and this past year talking about how we can make the economy stronger.

"The economy is not doing fine. There are too many people out of work. The housing market is still weak and too many homes underwater. And that's precisely why I asked Congress to start taking some steps that can make a difference.

"Now, I think if you look at what I said this morning and what I've been saying consistently over the last year, we've actually seen some good momentum in the private sector. We've seen 4.3 million jobs created — 800,000 this year alone — record corporate profits. And so that has not been the biggest drag on the economy.

"The folks who are hurting, where we have problems and where we can do even better, is small businesses that are having a tough time getting financing; we've seen teachers and police officers and firefighters who've been laid off — all of which, by the way, when they get laid off spend less money buying goods and going to restaurants and contributing to additional economic growth. The construction industry is still very weak, and that's one of the areas where we've still seen job losses instead of job gains.

"So if we take the steps that I laid out to make sure that we're not seeing teacher layoffs and we're not seeing police officer layoffs, and we're providing small businesses with additional financing and tax breaks for when they hire or if they're giving raises to their employees; if we refinance housing — or allow homeowners to refinance so they've got an extra $3,000 in their pocket so that they can spend money and contribute to further economic growth; if we're making sure that we're rebuilding, work that has to be done anyway, deferred maintenance on roads and bridges that could put construction workers back to work — all those things will strengthen the economy, and independent economists estimate it would create an additional million jobs..."

Mob attacks women at anti-sexual assault rally in Egypt

A mob of hundreds of men assaulted women holding a march demanding an end to sexual harassment Friday, with the attackers overwhelming the male guardians and groping and molesting several of the female marchers in Cairo's Tahrir Square.
..
Friday's march was called to demand an end to sexual assaults. Around 50 women participated, surrounded by a larger group of male supporters who joined hands to form a protective ring around them. The protesters carried posters saying, "The people want to cut the hand of the sexual harasser," and chanted, "The Egyptian girl says it loudly, harassment is barbaric."

After the marchers entered a crowded corner of the square, a group of men waded into the women, heckling them and groping them. The male supporters tried to fend them off, and it turned into a melee involving a mob of hundreds.

The marchers tried to flee while the attackers chased them and male supporters tried to protect them. But the attackers persisted, cornering several women against a metal sidewalk railing, including an Associated Press reporter, shoving their hands down their clothes and trying to grab their bags. The male supporters fought back, swinging belts and fists and throwing water.

Eventually, the women were able to reach refuge in a nearby building with the mob still outside until they finally got out to safety.

I just telling you what I see as a business person and an Obama supporter (usually the only one in the room BTW). This administration chose to fulfill their pledge on medical insurance rather than put in a really big spending package. Then they completely missed the boat on Bowles-Simpson, the perfect cover for ballsy, much needed reform. I grant you that they may not have been able to get a bigger spending package, but if they had traded full insurance for a partial insurance bill, let's say, for a an extra Trillion in spending...who knows?

Oh well, facts on the ground is all we have left. I still think we can win, but it's gonna be a squeaker. People are scared and scared people do strange things.
