A review of the independent documentary The Revisionaries from a writer at the Seattle IFF:
A few years ago, Rachel Grady and Heidi Ewing made what’s perhaps their best-known film, Jesus Camp, a remarkably objective examination of right-wing fundamentalists indoctrinating children to be little “soldiers for Christ,” a film that a fellow critic described at the time (and rightfully so) as the scariest movie he’d seen that year. With The Revisionaries, Scott Thurman, flying solo for the first time as director on a doc feature, brings a similarly balanced eye to this documentary about the importance of the Texas Board of Education in determining the content of textbooks across the nation, and how Don McLeroy, a little-known Christian dentist got himself elected chair of the BOE and subsequently did all that the could to weaken the teaching of evolution in science textbooks in Texas.
If you heard about all that nonsense back when it was happening and thought to yourself, “Boy, I’m sure glad my kids don’t go to school in Texas,” this film will make you think again about the impact seemingly ridiculous happenings in the Lone Star state could actually have on your own kids’ education.
Part of what makes The Revisionaries so effective is McLeroy himself, who’s so jolly and earnest it’s hard to perceive him as potentially dangerous to the science education of children not just in Texas, but across the country. Far-right conservatives might take issue with the way in which they’re represented here by McLeroy and his fellow conservative Christian BOE members, who seem to have great difficulty grasping the concept of separation of Church and State, but Thurman’s just holding up a mirror to what’s actually there and showing it in the context of how these people’s religious beliefs actually impact the decisions of the nation’s major textbook manufacturers with regard to content that ends up being taught in our public schools.
I’d honestly never given any thought to how the ridiculousness in Texas over evolution and creationism could impact my own kids here in liberal Seattle, until Thurman pieced together here the way in which the textbook standards of a state like Texas — a huge source of revenue and therefore very influential in what ends up in books sold to other states — can affect students everywhere. Thurman makes his case effectively here, mostly by letting the real players just open their mouths and speak for themselves. But I’d be willing to bet, just as Jesus Camp played equally well to both sides, that if you showed this film to an audience full of Texas fundamentalist creationists, they’d walk out feeling like the film portrays a victory for Christ in keeping science at bay in textbook standards, and in advancing the cause of creationism and “intelligent design.”

Train wreck ahead.
The evangelicals make the mistake of confusing evangelism with forcing ideology down people's throats.
They have every right to go out there, preach the Word and offer salvation to those who accept, by way of example and persuasion.
They do not have the right to force their beliefs down anyone's throats or to stifle or silence those who disagree with them.
This is not the era of the Inquisition Lite.
That the evangelicals have inserted themselves into the political system is a far greater problem than Citizens United, in my opinion.

Policies that promote gender equality, safeguards against violence and exploitation and access to healthcare make Canada the best place to be a woman among the world's biggest economies, a global poll of experts showed on Wednesday.
Infanticide, child marriage and slavery make India the worst, the same poll concluded.
Germany, Britain, Australia and France rounded out the top five countries out of the Group of 20 in a perceptions poll of 370 gender specialists conducted by TrustLaw, a legal news service run by Thomson Reuters Foundation.
The United States came in sixth but polarized opinion due to concerns about reproductive rights and affordable healthcare.

Up here, our homeless problem is a bit more complicated. We have them, like any major metropolis, but the complicating factor is not abandoning them to die in the bitter cold of the Minnesota winter. Cont. riff on my 4 year anniversary today.
yea..You want to read this for the heck of it..
When I first got here our family was completely stressed with Jordan being in Iraq. I received such support from you lizards. My avatars were of my goofy son posing in Iraq in a war zone. In fact, At the Time I posted about a 3am Satt call from a rooftop in Fallujah.. I was exhausted when I wrote it and I believe it got more updings that any post in LGF history..But the backstory... The Iraq war ripped our family apart.. The stress every day was beyond imagination. My wife and I fought every day over nothing.. Nothing.. Just pure stress.. Hard to understand but within weeks we hated each other and I would post here just to keep my sanity. Not once did I tell you my life was melting away. We would fight over everything for no reason.
You guys really were a rock for me.. I would just post away and carefree.
After Jordan came home my Family moved back home to California. I was all alone in Indiana.. I just kept posting and you put up with me..
One day Paulie came by and dumped a dog on me.. Little Winston..
I have never had a pet in my life and wasn't in the mood to start.
Hundreds of posts later he has brought real joy to my heart..My little buddy that hangs out with me.

Guillermo del Toro’s "Pacific Rim": Cthulhu vs Battle-Mech
It’s been nearly four years since Guillermo del Toro’s last directorial project (Hellboy II), but he recently wrapped a brand new directorial effort: Pacific Rim. The film involves “the finest fucking monsters ever committed to screen” and centers on a battle between ginormous creatures and human-manned robots. Del Toro recently talked about building several blocks of Hong Kong for the film only to demolish them all, and now the first image from Pacific Rim has landed online. While it’s not exactly a still from a scene, it gives us our first look at star Idris Elba in his Pacific Rim costume, and we start to get a feel for the atmosphere that del Toro will be bringing to the project. Though he only recently entered post-production, I expect we’ll get our first look at footage at Comic-Con in a couple of weeks. You can read our recent interview with Elba, in which he talks about working on Pacific Rim, right here.
Hit the jump to check out the image. The film also stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Ron Perlman. Pacific Rim opens on July 12th, 2013.

An excellent tragic character, one I think even William Shakespeare would have appreciated. It was unusual to have the tragic hero of Season 3 by the leader of a crime syndicate, but Simon and Burns made it work very well and in Elba they had an actor capable of bring the part to full life.

Hopefully to attack the war on drugs as a counter productive, damaging, entirely negative influence on society. Bath salts would never exist without it, the only reason they were invented was to exploit a narrow legal loophole, and while some States have caught on they still haven't been banned nationally or added to the Schedule 1 list. Once they are the chemists with come up with something else. Treating drug use, possession and addiction in itself as a criminal rather than medical problem is adding fuel to the fire. Society is playing an ever losing game of whack a mole with people's lives and livelihoods, and creating a market for more and more harmful drugs in the process.
149 | Kragar Tue, Jun 12, 2012 8:17:51pm |
You did two sci-fi things back-to-back, Pacific Rim and this. How did the monsters compare?
Well, Guillermo del Toro’s film is much more an Earth/human story with the looming attack of another race. Very different. Guillermo del Toro is an amazing director to work with. I learned so much about precision from him — about looking at you now and then looking one layer behind you at the leaves and then looking at the wall behind you and then looking at shadows on the wall. My depth of field is now so unbelievably clear I feel like I want to direct now because of what Guillermo taught me.Really? What were the various things that you learned from him?
His attention to detail is amazing. His attention to sort of how to manipulate the audience to keep driving them forward in the story. As an actor, you kind of say the words, but he wanted us to really connect to each emotion. Whether the last time you saw me on the screen was six minutes ago or not, there was a real sort of connection to each one any time you were seeing me. That’s not something you teach, but it’s something that I was aware that he was paying attention to. It was interesting. What does your character do?
He's yet another man of authority, but this time much higher up. He's the head of the army and the army is the essential fighting force against these monsters. The world is crumbled and this alien lived underneath the surface of the Earth for a long time. Our only defense has been these massive robots that fight back — they're basically tanks that are put together to look like men and can walk. I play the leader of that sort of movement. Then we lose our funding, basically, and the world decides to build walls around countries, which basically means the rich can get in and the poor can't. So our characters go, "No. We're going to fight this our way." It could be a box-standard, fight-against-the-aliens sort of film, but not with Guillermo. It sounds like it's almost a commentary on class and immigration.
Well, it’s certainly a commentary on if the world were under attack who would survive and who wouldn’t. Interestingly enough, the poor would probably more survive than the rich. Why is that?
Because they have less and are used to less; therefore, more resilient and more tough. If an alien attacks a big skyscraper, people in the skyscraper are going to die. The people on the floor may not.

It's somewhat hard to put the 'hero' label on Macbeth, too. You can use the the phrase "tragic protagonist" if you wish, but the classic term is "tragic hero". And as the creators of the Wire have openly stated they roots of the show in Greek Tragedy, it is hard not to see Stringer Bell as a tragic figure: He has strength, intelligence, and charisma and wit those seeks to mold Baltimore's drug trade in his image. But his betrayals and cruelties catch up with him, leading to his demise at the hands of two men he had wronged. But even at that last, Stringer does not whine and like Marshal Ney commands his executioners to fire.

Why wouldn't it be? Put your cynicism aside for a moment and ask where the money is coming from? There probably isn't any. So she's motivated by publicity, yes, but any lawyer would want to humanize their client. Do you really think eating faces was on this dude's agenda before he snorted (or smoked or whatever) a highly experimental drug that had zero in the way of clinical trials or IRB oversight? I don't, I think this shit does what the doctor's in ER's have come to believe it does, cause psychotic breaks and insanely violent behavior.
Should the guy be locked up for the assault, absolutely, but that's really not going to solve the structural problem with society that caused Bath Salts to be created. It won't do anything to keep the next generation of designer drugs off the streets. I don't really give a shit about Allred one way or another, but if she can use her influence to shed even an iota of light on the real problem then more power to her.

Maybe. Stewart would probably be better than most of the talking heads at a POTUS debate, but sometimes his MBF reflex gets annoying.
This video is a good example. Maybe I'm being dense, but is Stewart saying Obama actually committed a gaffe with the initial "private sector is fine" comment? Or is he mocking the idea that the comment was taken out of context?

US 'troubled' at report of Cuba dissident abuse
WASHINGTON — The United States voiced concern Tuesday at the reported beating by authorities in Cuba of a prominent dissident who spoke by remote link with US lawmakers about the Communist-run island.
"The United States is disturbed by reports that Cuban authorities arrested and physically assaulted Jorge Luis Garcia Perez, otherwise known as Antunez, on June 9th," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.
Nuland explained that the detention came two days after Antunez testified before a Senate foreign relations subcommittee, stressing: "This treatment is contrary to respect for universally recognized human rights."
In Havana, a dissident source confirmed that Antunez had been detained.
"He was beaten, and he has told his family he fainted after (state security agents) sprayed him with something" in the face, said a member of the Cuban Committee for Human Rights and National Reconciliation, a dissident information clearinghouse. The person, who asked not to be named, said Antunez was "savagely beaten" in his own home in Placetas, in the central Cuban province of Santa Clara.
Nuland called for the immediate release of Antunez, and "the end of government-sponsored retaliatory harassment, violence and arbitrary detention in Cuba."

I think they need some education reform in Gaza...
Gaza kindergartners want to 'blow up Zionists'
Children attending a kindergarten in Gaza that is run by Islamic Jihad celebrated their graduation by dressing up in army attire, waving toy rifles and chanting anti-Israel slogans.
"It is our obligation to educate the children to love the resistance, Palestine and Jerusalem, so they will recognize the importance of Palestine and who its enemy is," the kindergarten's director said.
The children were dressed up in uniforms of Jihad's armed-wing, the al-Quds Brigades, and each of them received a toy rifle. Some of them held up photos of Islamic Jihad founder Fathi Shaqaqi.
...During the ceremony the children were asked to stand next to mock coffins draped with flags of the various armed factions. The flags bore the images of "shahids (martyrs)."
One child, Hamza, said "When I grow up I'll join Islamic Jihad and the al-Quds Brigades. I'll fight the Zionist enemy and fire missiles at it until I die as a shahid and join my father in heaven.
"I love the resistance and the martyrs and Palestine, and I want to blow myself up on Zionists and kill them on a bus in a suicide bombing," he said.

How California's GM food referendum may change what America eats
In Europe, only 5% of food sold contains GMOs, a figure that continues to shrink. In the US, by contrast, an estimated 70% of the products on supermarket shelves include at least traces of genetically engineered crops – mostly, corn and soy byproducts and canola oil, which are ingredients in many of America's processed foods.
Given their unpopularity with consumers, labeling "Frankenfoods" would undoubtedly hurt sales, possibly even forcing supermarkets to take them off their shelves. In one survey, just over half of those polled said they would not buy food that they knew to be genetically modified.
I don;t think it will make any difference. Most people already know they're eating GM food and I don't think labels are going to change that. Anyways, the GM corn is probably among the least problematic ingredient in processed food anyways.

L1011? That's old school and then some. Then again, it was probably cheap to obtain and modify than to get something more current (say an MD-8x) and/or there was something about the L1011 that made it a better platform for drop launches.
The MD's are far too low. The other alternative would be a DC-10/MD-11 type config. There's a lot of nice L-1011s still around especially around Mojave. Not sure what the story is with this one. Let me look...

In the early 1990s, Orbital Sciences began to use a converted L-1011-100 named Stargazer to launch Pegasus rockets into orbit around Earth. This venture effectively rendered the small Scout rocket obsolete.[43][44] This aircraft was also used in support of the X-34 and X-43 programs. NASA performed aerodynamic research on Orbital Science's L-1011 in 1995.[45]

Comptroller slams PM in flotilla report
Despite being aware of risks posed by Gaza-bound flotilla ahead of time, Israel's leaders failed to follow decision-making protocols, state comptroller writes
...
Over two weeks prior to the raid, Ashkenazi warned that a flotilla debacle won't be over quickly and advised Netanyahu to choose a course of action that would prevent the flotilla from embarking on its journey.
"I have no doubt that force will be used," he said. "The people will confront us. We would be deluded to think that if 20 people parachute onto a ship of 400 passengers, they will get applause. The (passengers) will fight."

North Dakota voters reject religious "liberties" measure; property tax repeal. They also approved a measure to retire the UND's Fighting Sioux mascot.
The religious liberties measure is a prescription for disaster - and a solution in search of a problem. The property tax repeal was likewise a bad idea considering that the tax revenues go to education funding, and while the state is flush with oil/gas tax revenues, that's not a certain thing going forward and legislative adjustments of the tax are appropriate- not the elimination of the tax altogether.

Most of the Lockheed planes have been retired from US fleets. You'd have to go overseas to find any still around. Not cost effective to fly/maintain, and newer planes are much more efficient (which is why even 707/727/737s are being retired to make way for MD8x, 737x, A3x and newer variations by MDD, Boeing, or Airbus).

Police using YouTube to tell own stories
After a dozen Occupy Minnesota protesters were arrested at a downtown demonstration, the group quickly took to the Internet, posting video that activists said showed police treating them roughly and never warning them to leave.
But Minneapolis police knew warnings had been given. And they had their own video to prove it. So they posted the footage on YouTube, an example of how law enforcement agencies nationwide are embracing online video to cast doubt on false claims and offer their own perspective to the public.‘‘It certainly frustrates the street officers to see their work being twisted into something that didn’t happen or things being taken out of context,’’ said Minneapolis police Sgt. Bill Palmer. ‘‘Frankly, the use of force, which is what most people want to film, is never going to look good, and the context can easily be twisted.’’
After years of seeing officers’ misconduct captured on video, police departments across the nation are trying to use the medium to their advantage, releasing footage of their own to rebut allegations and to build trust within communities. One department even posted video of an officer punching a woman to show why he was fired.
Weeks before the Occupy demonstration in April, Minneapolis police created their own YouTube channel to give officers a venue to tell their own stories.

NuSTAR will be the first focussing high energy X-ray satellite in orbit, providing more than two orders of magnitude improvement in sensitivity as compared to previous high energy missions. The primary science goals of NuSTAR are broad, and include:
• Conducting a survey of black holes
• Mapping young supernovae explosions
• Studying nature's most powerful cosmic accelerators
• Identifying high energy sources in our Galaxy
The unprecedented sensitivy of NuSTAR will also be leveraged at a variety of additional programs:

A blue man ‘dupe’: Parent panic at 32G ‘progressive’ school
The Blue School is one big play date in desperate need of adult supervision.
Parents are yanking their kids out of the “progressive,” $32,000 per-year private school founded by the Blue Man Group — which has no books and no tests — because their kids are barely learning to read, The Post has learned.
One mother, who is yanking her son at the end of the school year, complained that the school is “unstructured.”
“It’s true,” she said when asked if her kid was struggling to read.
In all, she added, four of her son’s first-grade classmates are leaving the Financial District institution.
Another parent who dropped her first-grade son off yesterday said he’s not coming back next year — because he’s got nothing to do.
“When a 6-year-old says they’re bored, there’s a problem,” the mother said. “I think they bit off more than they can chew.”
Other moms have taken to a popular message board to vent.
“It’s all fun and games until you realize your second-grader can’t read,” a parent wrote on Urbanbaby.com.
And parent Marina Brolin added, “I think they don’t push [reading] as much.”

Oh, I understand all that quite well.
It's just that I can remember growing up on the farm just outside of Eau Claire WI in the late sixties and watching North Central DC-3's heading into the local airport. Old airliners and steam locomotives are major nostalgia makers for me.

lol. Who would have thought a school started by mimes would suck?
They may not be able to read but they can play a piece of PVC pipe better than any other students from the area schools.

Hey, did you catch game 6 the other night? What happened in the last five minutes? Your goalie turn into a permeable mist? That was fucking brutal. Still, a good season overall for you.

Here's their official website. HuffPo did a critique/review of the school and its curriculum as did CNN.
Curiously, neither addressed any issue about reading proficiency.
If that's the case, then the school has some serious deficiencies in key areas - being able to read/write is critical to future educational success and job opportunities/endeavors.

Brutal doesn't begin to explain it - the major penalty was the backbreaker and the Kings simply outmanned and outgunned the Devils. Damn 'em.
A great season though - highlighted by the fact that the Devils knocked out the Rangers. Woo!

The boarding penalty in the 1st period by Steve Bernier was a stupid move in his part. It went downhill from there.

Perhaps because they're been around since 1982. Maybe a name change would help: OrbitalX. Kidding. It's fine like this.

'Hezbollah may move Syrian arms to Lebanon'
Concern is mounting in Israel over the possibility that Hezbollah will try to move sophisticated weaponry, including Scud missiles, from Syria to Lebanon to protect them in the event of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s downfall.
The concern stems from reports that Assad might be losing control over certain military capabilities including an air defense base which was captured by rebels earlier this week.
Syria is believed to have allocated a number of Scud D missiles – the most advanced missile in its arsenal – to Hezbollah already in 2010 but they have been stored in bases in Syria.
...Israel’s concern also focuses on the possibility that Syria’s arsenal of chemical weapons will fall into rogue hands. The concern over the stability of Syria’s chemical arsenal comes at a time when only about 60 percent of Israelis are in possession of gas masks. The IDF is currently lacking NIS 1.2 billion to complete the production and distribution of gas masks to the rest of the public.
Hezbollah may get SCUDs and chemical weapons from Syria? What could possible go wrong?

IIUC, the SCUDS are already theirs, they just want to get them out of harm's way.
As to the chemicals and 'what could possibly go wrong', I think calculating all the ways Syria and its fallout could get worse and not better is almost impossible at this point.

Ice cream van dispute in Blackburn investigated by police
An altercation between two rival ice cream sellers in a street in Blackburn is being investigated by Lancashire Police.
The dispute on Palatine Road in front of children buying ice creams on 2 June at about 18:00 BST was filmed and uploaded on YouTube. It has been viewed more than 400,000 times.
Zeheer Ramzan from Halifax, who trades as Mr Yummy, is seen breaking a window in his rival's van. The other ice cream seller Mohammed Mulla, aka Mr Whippy, from Blackburn then drives into the back of the other van.
Blackburn with Darwen Council, who issues licences for street trading, have also confirmed they are investigating the incident.

My question is this: if you were a parent living in this neighborhood, would you subsequently allow your child to buy from either Mr. Yummy or Mr. Whippy, or would you buy your own ice cream at Tescos, thereby avoiding the possibility that the jolly ice cream men are going to come back to shoot it out?
Also: these guys should have been characters in Roddy Doyle's "The Van".

"I'm a Mormon, Not a Christian"

Finally! A devout LDS who doesn't beat around the bush about this.
The efforts of some Mormons to appear "Christian" seems as disingenuous to me as "Jews for Jesus" groups that want to appear Jewish. It's something else, and should be treated as such.

Belief In God Plummets Among Youth (CHART)
Young Americans are abandoning God in droves.
A new survey by the Pew Research Center finds that belief in the existence of God has dropped 15 points in the last five years among Americans 30 and under.
Pew, which has been studying the trend for 25 years, finds that just 68 percent of millennials in 2012 agree with the statement “I never doubt the existence of God.” That’s down from 76 percent in 2009 and 83 percent in 2007.
Among other generations, belief in God is high and has seen few changes over the last few decades. Between 81 and 89 percent of older generations say they never doubt the existence of God, although the older the generation, the more likely they are to believe in God.

While the Weekly Standard attempts to slander the Democratic Party by alluding that Charles Brown represents “The heart and soul of the Democratic party?” Democrats gather to oppose his candidacy.

The WS is actually calling this guy the heart and soul of the GOP? What a bunch of tools they are. This guy isn't even a nominee. He sucks and he is a bigot but to call him the heart and soul of the party stinks to high heaven and the hacks at WS know that.
