Iowa Cafe Owner Offended by Romney and His Arrogant Staff

‘You know, if he gets in office is he going to be that way to us little people?’

Read it all here.

FLV Video

Dianne Bauer opened up her cafe to Mitt Romney and his campaign for a small round table discussion Friday morning before his speech at Bayliss Park.

This isn’t the first politician that has asked Bauer to use the Main Street Cafe in downtown Council Bluffs.

“With Rick Perry he made a point of stopping in the kitchen before he ever went to the other side to address the public and the media to thank us and introduce himself to us,” said Bauer. “That’s what I thought we would get here, just normal. This was all out, like you’d think Obama was here.” [Even after watching the video, I’m not sure what she meant by that…ed.]

Bauer’s issues with the campaigns staffers started the night before when they started staging the cafe for the event.

She described many of their demeanors as “arrogant”.

[…]

She was complaining about the event to a friend when reporters overheard her and posted about it online.

That’s when Romney called Bauer himself. She says he explained that it was just a misunderstanding that she did not get to meet him, but the phone call didn’t smooth things over for her.

“He responded ‘well, I’m sorry your table cloths got ripped off, wadded up and thrown in the back room’ and I took it as mocking,” she said. “We’re the ones he’s wanting to get the votes from, you’d think we would have been treated better.”

She says the whole experience left her wondering.

“With how he treated me, is that how he’s going to treat others? You know, if he gets in office is he going to be that way to us little people?”

After thinking about it more, I’m pretty sure she would expect Obama to be arrogant, but not Romney. I think she’s a wingnut.

Fucking up an apology phone call. That takes some skill.

More and more, Romney can't help but remind me of the boss from Office Space. Bland, dubiously competent, completely out of touch with the feelings and emotions of those around him, milking those below him for all they're worth, nonchalantly walking away with the red Swingline of the American middle class.

That hasn't been made abundantly clear by now?

I wonder if she meant it was the kind of upheaval you'd see if the President came to her place -- I expect he has the bigger entourage. More likely, she's bought the "arrogant and out of touch Obama" propaganda, of course.

19 What, me worry?  Wed, Jun 13, 2012 11:38:53am

It's her cafe. He should have made an extra special point to meet with her.

Actually, I think the fact that she's a Republican (I'm guessing) is far more telling. Romney does not resonate with his base. Rick Perry? Absolutely. He's a down-home kinda dude. There ain't nothing down-home about Romney.

The Tea Party has been duped by the 1%. The 1% created the Tea Party nonsense by taking the old "tax and spend liberals" mantra to new heights - adding in the cry of "less government." We ALL want less government, but not for things that would actually help the middle class (like less taxes). No, the 1% wants less government on corporations so they can pollute where they want, hire who they want, or rather NOT hire who they want, and basically get government out of their way so they can increase the profits and step on the rest of us. All in Ayn Randian style.

Romney may not necessarily be Tea Party, but he's still the face of the GOP and when it gets down to it, it's just one face.

The 1% and Tea Party being one reminds me of the Family Guy where Peter joined the Tea Party and his wealthy FiL pretends to be a blue collar type to get him and the other midle class people to support the TP. It was actually a pretty spot on indictment of how poorly the TP activists understand how things work.

Giggity. One of my favorite characters on the show is Consuela. Got a friend who can do a near perfect impersonation. He was even her for Halloween. We also had plans for a one man show where he would portray Democratic strategist Gil (from the Simpsons/homage to Jack Lemmon's character in one of his films) and Republican strategist Consuela. Too bad it never happened because it would have been awesome.

Bryan Fischer in the New Yorker: Extreme, Rigid and the Product of a Broken Home

The New Yorker profile, appropriately titled “Bully Pulpit,” is Fischer’s first national media close-up, and the results are none too pretty. Mayer spoke with former and current friends and co-workers of Fischer, and the portrait that consistently emerges is of an extreme and rigid man who consistently drives friends away and is compensating, to this day, for childhood traumas.

Most people now know where to go for the truth. Matt Drudge, Breitbart and Fox News have led the way. The MSM is losing viewers and readers by the thousands every day. To stop the flow they have been doing more of the same.

Between him & the imaginary #TwitterGulag conspiracy, they're wigging out worse than usual. I guess that's what happens when the fact one's online actions can result in real world consequences pierces their carefully constructed & defended bubble. They're damned near in full meltdown mode.

Weirdos. They're just looking for any excuse to maintain a constant state of rage. By that I mean 24/7 and I imagine it includes some lucid dreams for more than a few of these sad-sacks.

They say that Hoffa has an unlimited expense account. They say that Hoffa is crooked. They say that Hoffa lives like a king. But there's one thing you never hear them say: that Hoffa doesn't get results!

This past Sunday, two of Romney's surrogates, including Scotty Walker, did the political talk show circuit. And both said pretty much the same thing: Romney can't run on just "I'm Not Obama," he has to offer something a viable alternative to the voters. And right now, that's just not happening.

And this is with some high profile Republican support:

Republican Senators John McCain, Scott Brown, and Susan Collins all support an effort by Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, a Democrat from New Hampshire, to expand abortion access for military women who are raped. But despite bipartisan support in the Senate, Shaheen's proposal may not make it into the final version of the 2013 defense authorization bill—because House Republicans oppose it.

Judge Orders George Zimmerman’s Statements, Trayvon Martin’s Autopsy To Be Made Public

The judge in the murder case against George Zimmerman on Wednesday ordered numerous pieces of evidence, including Trayvon Martin’s autopsy report and photos of the killing scene, to be released to the public despite arguments by both prosecutors and defense attorneys that they remain secret. Zimmerman’s statements to police after the killing were also ordered to be made public.

It’s unclear whether the evidence will include any major revelations, but laywers for Florida-based and national news outlets argued that the public had a right to see everything possible in the high-profile case. Judge Kenneth Lester Jr. ordered authorities to release the new evidence within 15 days.

And this isn't theoretical. There is a lot of rape that goes on in the military. It's been a constant struggle to deal with it, and we're nowhere near on top of the problem.

Something like 1 in 10 of supported (as in, the woman testifies, gives evidence, etc.) sexual assault charges in the military are ever taken to a court martial. I really doubt that 9 out of 10 women in the military are just making it up when they say they've been assaulted, and I really doubt that can be explained by not being able to make a case, either.

So this bill will really, actually prevent a woman who joined the military and served her country, risking her life, who wound up getting raped by a fellow soldier, from getting an abortion if that rape makes her conceive. She may be forced to bear her rapists child, and her rapist is unlikely to ever suffer any punishment whatsoever.

It reminds me of how Ahmadinejad said that gays don't exist in Iran. In a way these pukes are almost denying the existence of rape within the services and care to do nothing about it. To support this they would first have to acknowledge the problem.

I think that was the theme of David "Bobo" Brook's NYT column yesterday in which he admonished us to bow and scrape for our betters.

Reminds me. Censorship has gotten out of hand and I think it's actually worse than it was when I was a kid. I can't help but think the Religious Right has their hands in this.

Back in the 70s, there were the 7 dreaded words you couldn't say on TV. Pretty normal stuff, but the radio was much more liberal. Before there were videos, comedians made albums. The more "raunchy" were Cheech and Chong and, of course, George Carlin and Richard Pryor. No warning labels, and I don't know if it was because people just knew what they were or parents were clueless or plain ole didn't really care if you heard a naughty word at the age of 16.

Fast forward to 2012. I was tivoing old Fraziers on WE or Lifetime and they bleeped out the words "crap" and "damn". SERIOUSLY. FRAZIER IS BEING CENSORED. How stupid can you get.

Clear Channel radio censors everything except the word "bitch". That's perfectly fine because it's directed at women and the religious right could careless about women.

Wow, I'm in a mood today :>

Romney Touts Presidential Salary Plan That Was Literally A Saturday Night Live Skit

In an interview with conservative radio host Neal Boortz, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney floated an unusual profit-making opportunity for himself if he becomes president — paying himself a higher salary if he performs well in the White House. In Romney’s words, “I do believe in linking my incentives and my commitment to the accomplishment of specific goals . . . . I wish we had that happen throughout government — where people recognized they are not going to get rewarded in substantial ways unless they are able to achieve the objectives that they were elected to carry out.”

This is not a new proposal, however. It was actually proposed in 1992 by billionaire presidential candidate Ross Perot — or at least by someone pretending to be Perot. In a 1992 Saturday Night Live skit, Perot impersonator Dana Carvey outlined something very similar to the Romney plan for presidential compensation:

Mitt Romney, the newest not ready for prime time player.

Some fabrics/ color schemes don't photograph/ show via a TV camera well.

I'm sure you've seen someone on TV with a dark colored tightly checkered shirt under a plain jacket. In certain shots the checks look like they're vibrating

ROFLMAO—sorry for going OT, but I just found the email below in my spam folder. The sender? Central Bank of Nigeria, with a Yahoo email address no less.

Yeah, uh-huh, I'll get right on that. I'm tired of the crappy service I've been getting from the Bank of Nikolai, so a change might be good. I should've known better than to ask Sergey for a bank recommendation. //

That reminds me, I have to respond to the email about the box stopped at the Canadian border. It was opened and found to contain millions... which was MY INHERITANCE.

re: #152 Targetpractice

It's campaigns like Romney's that really do make me wonder when this nation as a whole is gonna drop its fascination with the idea of rich pricks trying to act like anything other than rich pricks out in public. When we stop going "He ate a corndog at a county fair, so he's genuine!," while ignoring him walking away from the fair, going "Can you believe the swill these peasants eat?! Bring me a bottle of Evian, I need to wash the taste from my mouth!"

Heh. In my current reading Truman is being run-down because he is *not* a member of the elite. After the American royalty of Roosevelt and Harry being a midwesterner without an Ivy League education the statement being made is "Well, how can you expect any normal man to be able to run the country effectively?"

So it's a no-win situation. Unless you're a Republican of course... ;)

I'm reminded of a story from the Dukakis run (from an eye witness I knew)

He walks into a shoe store, and without breaking stride raises on hand over his head snapping his fingers loudly saying "Wingtips,,, wingtips"

I heard a story about my late landlady, whom I never met, from her nephew, who inherited the place. "She was so gregarious. We'd come to visit and she'd want to take us to the Steak N Shake. She grabbed a fur coat, and her husband said, 'Now Lovey, don't you think that's a bit much for the Steak N Shake?' and she said, 'But it's one of my old ones!'"

We like our officials being "one of us." Chinese history professor of mine observed that we as Americans love elite athletes but we disdain it in our leadership and intellectuals.

Elite athletes often come from a 'one of us' background. Politicians less so all the time.

Fischer: Allowing Gay Adoption is 'a Form of Sexual Abuse'

It has been a few days since Bryan Fischer went off on a good old fashioned anti-gay rant, but today he was back in peak form, citing a bunk study that claims that kids raised in same-sex households suffer as adults as proof that gays are incapable of forming lasting, loving relationship while declaring that people who believe in the theory of evolution should be most opposed to gay unions because gay couples cannot procreate ... and then, just for good measure, topping it all of by declaring that allowing gay parents to adopt is "a form of sexual abuse":

He's just mad the New Yorker exposed his Daddy issues.

Wichita Anti-Choicer Leaders Raising Funds for Multi-Million Dollar "Pro-Life Memorial" As Children Suffer From Budget Cuts

A new report produced by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy shows that the only income group that will see their taxes increase under the tax bill recently signed by Gov. Sam Brownback are the poorest 20 percent of Kansans, those with an average income of just $11,000.

That group will pay about $148 more in state taxes, while the wealthiest 20 percent of Kansans will see their tax burden drop $21,087 on average. This tax plan will begin to negatively affect the Kansas budget as soon as next year. By 2018, the bill is expected to cost the state $4.5 billion.

Yet while Kansas children may not be getting social support, what the state is getting is a great-big Liberace-esque multi-million dollar "pro-life" memorial for which millions of dollars are being raised. A group led by Wichita anti-choice leaders, Mark Rotola and Mark Holick, has embarked upon what they are calling an “ambitious project,” but would more aptly be dubbed a monument of their perceived victory by assassination. Wichita is the location of the life, work and ultimate assassination three years ago this past May of Dr. George Tiller, a physician that provided abortion care here. The announcement of the memorial was released just one week after the third anniversary of his murder in his own church.
