Not related to the video, but what do you think the odds are of Mitt Romney picking a wingnut from a minority group (black, female, Latino, etc) as VP? I wonder if there is any possibility he'd go with Michelle Bachmann.

Ther aren't many minority choices. Maybe Rubio. I don't think he'll pick Bachman after the McCain Palin ticket from last time. He'll try to find somebody semi-serious which will tough enough with today's crop of Republicans.

I think he'll pick someone extremely bland and boring. Unlike John McCain, Romney has already pandered like crazy to the religious right, so he doesn't need to pick a VP like Sarah Palin to mollify them. I think it's likely to be someone like Tim Pawlenty.

Okay that is a beautiful video. And some interesting gear too. That head is pretty interesting. I wonder if used that instead of a rail to be able to travel more lightly and set up easily. It looks like he used gears for the slow smooth zoom. Dude must do some serious pro work.

Mitt Romney’s Plan To Unite Evangelicals: Pretend He’s Rick Santorum

Mitt Romney has a simple plan to appeal to evangelicals: he pretends he’s Rick Santorum.

The projected Republican nominee, who once chastised Santorum on the primary campaign trail for offering the base cheap thrills with “incendiary comments,” now likes to mimic Santorum when he speaks to evangelicals, a group still somewhat wary of their nominee.

What does it sound like? A promise to fix the economy by reinforcing the importance of the heterosexual family unit to an American population that has gone astray.

7 Daniel Ballard  Sat, Jun 16, 2012 11:28:36am

Good luck talking her into it but Condi Rice is an interesting prospect.

Washington Whispers

While over a dozen names were suggested by the strategists, some with the campaigns, four top the list: South Dakota Sen. John Thune and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, both surrogates for Romney, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, the most talked-about Hispanic in Washington, and former Secretary of State Condi Rice.

Others receiving multiple votes were Ohio Sen. Rob Portman, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

"Romney is likely to have to go right," said one former Bush aide. "He'll need somebody to generate enthusiasm from the base. Rubio fits the bill."

Some suggested that while most of the top picks appear easy and safe candidates, it is not out of the question that Romney would choose a surprise. The reason: Romney himself is the safest of the GOP candidates and might need some spice to rev up the Republican base. But it won't be Sarah Palin. Not one of our experts mentioned her, though former McCain adviser and former Hewlett-Packard executive Carly Fiorina got a vote.

None of which are problematic in and of themselves, only when taken too far are they bad. You'll also be hard-pressed to find people who see abortion and taxes as anything but the necessary evils that they are, whereas evolution is something some people will embrace openly.

Abortion isn't a positive good, neither are taxes. They are things that need to exist to prevent even worse things from happening. A doctor killing a fetus or the state taking your money are sometimes things that need to happen, but they are never good things.

Creationism is just the most obvious symptom of a right wing dysfunction that is doing incredible damage to America -- anti-intellectual, anti-science religious fanaticism.

This is also the main force that drives reactionary right wing anti-abortion fanatics, and climate change deniers.

I see this as part of the eternal human struggle against ignorance and darkness. These things matter, a lot.

If somebody has deeply held religious beiefs that's fine as long as they don't try to teach them in science class.
Lots of people have strong beliefs against abortion. As long as they don't try to force others to observe their moral taboo then that's fine by me.
Low taxes are a good thing to stimulate economic activity but become problematic when taken to extremes by increasing the budget deficit and creating economic inequity.

A safe, legal abortion is definitely a positive good for a woman who is pregnant at a bad time in her life or with a pregnancy that could maim or kill her. Taxes are definitely a positive good to have the services and infrastructure we need as a society to enable us to survive and thrive.

Speaking of, watch James Lipton from the Actor's Studio piss off Elizabeth Hasselbeck on The View talking about Mitt Romney's terrible ability to act human.

[Link: www.mediaite.com...]

Lipton said that he felt Romney was trying to play two roles — that of the unapologetic rich guy and the regular dude — and failing at both as a result. But! Romney has also made a lot of charitable donations, Elisabeth Hasselbeck interjected testily.

That may be true, but it didn’t stop Lipton from criticizing Romney’s inability to smile with his whole face (in other words, he’s a bad smize-er). “These are bleak times!” Hasselbeck responded. Then, Lipton shared that Romney is “mysterious” to him (“I think he’s pretty straightforward!” Hasselbeck interrupted). Lipton simply kept talking without acknowledging that she was there.

“Oooh, [Romney's] scary,” Hasselbeck eventually said in a mocking tone. Why aren’t we talking about his “countless donations to charity…this is like a character assault, not about acting,” she complained.

At this point everyone else at the table was ignoring her (Sherri Shepherd’s“Leave it alone” face was particularly on point) and they moved on to Romney’s wardrobe, which Lipton called a mixture of “bowling alley and country club.”

This is an email forward I recieved purporting to be gun rules from concealed carry instructors:

Guns have only two enemies – rust and politicians. It’s always better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6. Cops carry guns to protect themselves, not you. Never let someone or something that threatens you get inside arm’s length.

Never say "I’ve got a gun". If you need to use deadly force, the first sound they hear should be the safety clicking off. The average response time of a 911 call is 23 minutes, the response time of a .357 is 1400 feet per second. When seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

You may never need a gun, but if you do, you'll really, really need it. The most important rule in a gunfight is: Always win -cheat if necessary. Make your attacker advance through a wall of bullets . . . You may get killed with your own gun, but he'll have to beat you to death with it, ‘cause it'll be empty. If you’re in a gun fight: If you're not shooting, you should be loading. If you're not loading, you should be moving, if you're not moving, you're dead. In a life and death situation, do something . . . It may be wrong, but do something!

If you carry a gun, people call you paranoid. Nonsense! If you have a gun, what do you have to be paranoid about? You can say 'stop' or 'alto' or any other word, but a large bore muzzle pointed at someone's head is pretty much a universal language. You cannot save the planet, but you may be able to save yourself and your family. Anything or anybody that crosses your threshold uninvited, regardless of the time of day, has placed themselves in jeopardy.

Had a fire arms safety video address just that. A shooter fired 2 warning shots to scare off an attacker. It cut to a scene of an old lady at a mailbox which gets hit as she drops in a letter, then to a kid working on his bike who takes one in the back.

Rubio Bails On GOP-Friendly DREAM Act After Obama Move

Apparently, the politics are now "more difficult" than they were before. Gee, I wonder why.

If you read through the source material it's because the Presidential order is a temporary fix which removes the urgency for legislators to stick their necks out. However, a report from a highly partisan think tank based on an anonymous source speaking to Huffpo isn't very reliable.
Meanwhile today we have a quote from a named source in the Romney camp.
Adviser suggests Romney's position in line with Obama's on addressing fate of younger immigrants

The Obama campaign last night blasted out this quote from Tara Wall, a recently-hired adviser on the Mitt Romney campaign, talking on CNN about the presumptive GOP nominee's take on President Obama's pre-emptive move over Sen. Marco Rubio on the DREAM Act, and wherein the difference lies:

"Within the party, there are plenty of opinions about this and I think there's plenty of time to talk about how we address this. There's no easy solution and I think he said that all along. He has also said that he’s open to hearing other solutions like the DREAM Act. I think the more he’s heard from others, including Marco Rubio, the more he’s opened to broadening the idea of what we need to do with the folks, the young people, who are here through no fault of their own. If nothing else, we also see today, his opinion is the same, essentially in some degree, to President Obama’s. The difference is: what do we do as a long-term strategy?"

The two sides don't seem that far apart on the issue so there might be some hope of getting something accomplished.

Sure, if you ignore the election that's going on and the fact that Romney is running on making life so shitty for immigrants that they "self-deport", and if you ignore all of the anti-immigrant crazy from the revanchist, atavistic nutjobs on the far right.

If they are 359 degrees apart, they are only one degree apart. "Essentially in some degree" is bullshit.

Romney has not distanced himself from Kobach yet. It's a million miles from "self-deport" to any fragment of the DREAM Act.

In wake of budget cuts, Gwinnett Co. teachers offer work for free

Following a round of budget cuts that saw Gwinnett County school officials slice $89 million out of their operating costs, a group of teachers at Benefield Elementary School in Lawrenceville has banded together to give free reading classes for young students this summer.

The teachers' group was organized by Benefield Elementary teacher Karon Stocks, who didn't want her students to forget what they learned in the school year during their summer break.

Wow, they sound very much like the same person...

Doesn't sound even remotely close to me. Also you'll notice that Darby has a touch of a southern accent. Maybe New Orleans. Here's more of his speech for comparison.

I'm not sure why they picked Darby for this comparison but he does have an interesting past as an FBI informant on radical American leftists.

A man in Oregon is severely ill in hospital with a suspected case of the plague, thought to have been contracted as he tried saving a mouse from the jaws of a stray cat in his neighbourhood.

What you SHOULD do is get a fake rat, attach it's mouth to your neck and knock on the neighbors door with foam coming out of your mouth and ears!

I think we've just become so removed from nature that we forget what nature is. We are not supposed to live among massive populations of rats, mice, crows, pigeons, etc. Way too many people now just accept this as "natural".

The appropriate answer for an injured rat in a cat's jaws is, if the cat is unwilling to close the deal, a brick.

Not surprising. Leaving out a path to citizenship is a non-starter. Just because the bigots in the GOP don't want to admit that they profit from undocumented workers who deserve a real shot at citizenship doesn't mean that the rest of us are stupid enough to fall for Rubio's pathetic attempt to appeal to said bigots.

Had a fire arms safety video address just that. A shooter fired 2 warning shots to scare off an attacker. It cut to a scene of an old lady at a mailbox which gets hit as she drops in a letter, then to a kid working on his bike who takes one in the back.

You fire well aimed shots, not a wall of lead.

A safe, legal abortion is definitely a positive good for a woman who is pregnant at a bad time in her life or with a pregnancy that could maim or kill her. Taxes are definitely a positive good to have the services and infrastructure we need as a society to enable us to survive and thrive.

I have very little to say about politics, but I was in New Zealand years ago and loved it. Wonderful country to hike in. Hiked the Milford Track and felt like I was walking through the Cretaceous.

Great video, Charles. Thanks for bringing back the memories. Can you still drink the water from streams without having to worry about Giardia?
