WND: America’s Marxist Picnic

Fear the picnic of communism, please? And then, give us your money
Wingnuts • Views: 36,009

Oh sure, you may be jaded and tired of hearing about the Communist plot to pollute our precious bodily fluids, but are you ready for the MIND-BENDING HORROR of America’s Marxist Picnic?

And on Father’s Day, no less? The evil. The sheer evil.

I could go on and on. These oft-cited facts merely scratch the surface of Obama’s long-term radicalism. But the point in juxtaposing my father’s story and Obama’s is as inescapable as it is troubling:

My dad, a true American who was immeasurably grateful and loyal to his adopted country, could have lost everything because his mother went to a church picnic and picked up a Marxist rag.

That was then. But now, sitting in the White House is a man who has spent most of his entire life immersed in Marxist ideology, influences, mentors and benefactors. He has proven, as president, that he is still fully committed to dragging America – kicking and screaming if necessary (recall the outrageous and illegal way Obamacare was passed) – into a new era of unprecedented, government-coerced redistribution of wealth and power. To be precise: Marxism.

It would be folly, of course, to imagine that Obama just magically appeared out of thin air to lead a nation of liberty-loving, responsible, moral, right-thinking grownups leftward. America has been moving in this sad direction for decades. No, not under the “Marxist” label, or any of those other nasty words of yesteryear, like “socialism” or “communism” or “collectivism.” They’ve all been carefully replaced by warm-and-cuddly terms like “fairness,” “economic justice,” “redistribution,” “progressivism” and – as an off-script Obama famously told Joe the Plumber – “spread[ing] the wealth around.”

The spirit of socialism has taken root and flowered spectacularly in America, especially in all of our elite, idea-generating institutions like education, the news and entertainment media, and, of course, government. The original American spirit – stout, risk-taking, God-fearing, responsible, adult – has progressively been displaced by the spirit of dependency and helplessness, of perpetual grievance and victimization, and most of all, of envy and resentment. All of which cries out for ever bigger government.

So the question is: Will we Americans re-embrace the values that made ours the greatest nation in history, or will we continue on our current path toward the godless mirage of “redistributive change” – and the poverty and loss of liberty that always follow?

In any event, for the present I can at least derive some solace from remembering that I was raised by parents and grandparents who appreciated their adopted country and all the blessings the Creator freely bestowed upon it – and weren’t angrily obsessed with “transforming” it into a socialist paradise. For that I am truly grateful.

May those blessings continue. May this nation repent of its sins. And may we come to our senses before it’s too late.

Happy 100th birthday, Dad. God bless you.

Here's the original (large) image from which WND cropped a section, to use on their banner slideshow to promote that stupid article:

It's supposed to free to use for editorial and educational purposes, so you could probably put a shrunk version in the key posting.

Yes, WND used a photo of Bobby Flay with the President at a bbq as the cover image of that idiotic piece.

Really.

The guy who wrote this is an idiot and a fossil. He's just a younger fossil than his "real American" dad he compares to "fake American" Obama.

(Younger Americans aren't freaked out by the commie accusations because, among other things, they see the Cold War and attendant hysteria as ancient history.)

For 8 years we also heard that Bill Clinton was a Marxist, commie, whatever. Which of course is total BS. US capitalism was just as strong, if not more so, when he left office. Same thing with Obama. When conservatives are filled with hatred but can't articulate the real reasons (race, xenophobia, Islamophobia, etc) they fall back on the commie card.

Let's ask American History...

Between 1935 and 1943, the WPA provided almost eight million jobs.[3] Full employment, which emerged as a national goal around 1944, was not the WPA goal. It tried to provide one paid job for all families where the breadwinner suffered long-term unemployment.[4]

Great point. And that was 8 million jobs at a time when the US population was less than half what it is today. FDR was the real radical, if one has to use such a term; certainly not Obama.

It is all because of Obama and his support of renewable energy programs instead of "Drill,Baby Drill"! Dammit we were never left with no propane on Fathers Day when Reagan or the Bushs' were President! It is all part of the communist/marxist/socialist/U.N./Kenyan conspiracy to alienate this great countries sons from their fathers by ruining as many Fathers Day cookouts as possible.

Fox does a "SWATting" story and seemingly does zero original reporting (contacting the local law enforcement participants in these events for example) and instead just reprints various claims from bloggers:

[Link: www.foxnews.com...]

Conservative bloggers are on heightened alert following a string of so-called "SWAT-ing" incidents and are taking precautionary measures to ensure they don't fall victim to the potentially dangerous prank as the political blogosphere prepares for a heated election season.

"SWAT-ing" refers to a hoax in which an anonymous prankster falsely reports a violent crime at an unsuspecting person's home, prompting a police team to respond to the location believing a dangerous situation is at hand.

The illegal practice has in recent months targeted well-known conservative writers and commentators, including Erick Erickson, founder of the blog RedState.com -- who claims he was eating dinner with his family in May when a SWAT team surrounded his home following such a false 911 call.
The growing trend, which some say could one day prove deadly, had conservatives on edge at the annual RightOnline conference of right-wing bloggers and activists in Las Vegas this weekend.

...

Akbar told FoxNews.com that he believes he is a target after he claims his mother's home address in Texas was posted on various Internet sites to "incite someone crazy on the fringe left to do something absolutely awful to one of us for what we're talking about."

Akbar and others are urging troops of conservative bloggers to protect themselves by contacting their local law enforcement before they post about a "controversial" topic.

...

Such was the case for conservative Patrick Frey of Patterico's Pontifications, who reportedly had a SWAT team --with guns drawn -- descend on his California home in July 2011 and handcuff him.

A blogger named tbogg noticed that there's an escalation in Erickison's claim to Fox from what he posted originally to Redstate. The Fox article says "a SWAT team surrounded his home," while his original account is as follows:

Tonight, my family was sitting around the kitchen table eating dinner when sheriffs deputies pulled up in the driveway.

...

Luckily it was two sheriffs deputies who knew me and I had already, last week, advised the Sheriff’s Department to be on the look out for something like this.

Huh. That's really weird-- changing his story, I mean. I guess he felt it wasn't dramatic enough.

Leaving the options that he lied about it originally, and it was really a SWAT team-- which is unlikely, because why would he minimize it at first?

Or the option that he's lying now-- most probable, I'd say.

Or he's completely lying and there was no police contact at any point.

Common thread?

He's lying at some point.

Not just that, we clearly WON the Cold War, hands down. The Soviet Union collapsed; the few Communist states left are either "Communist in Name Only" (e.g. China, Vietnam) or complete failures in their own rite (e.g. North Korea).
Simply put, that particular fight is over. History has vindicated capitalism - the path forward (for reasonable people) is fostering a responsible and sustainable capitalistic model.

It's also pretty weird that he contacted the police preemptively about his fears of being swatted and then apparently actually was. There's an entire constellation of conservative bloggers who've all written on the same subjects who have never been the subject of this kind of stunt, so it's kind of odd that Erickson was so fired up about the possibility that he decided to contact the police first.

It's also odd that rather than let the police / FBI do their jobs and investigate these crimes in an efficient, publicity free environment these guys all have the same ready baked bogeymen suspects that they're naming publicly. Not only is there an utter lack of actual evidence to back up their accusations, but generally the last thing an investigating officer needs is a bunch of press coverage drumming up massive amounts of false leads and potentially alerting actual suspects of an impending search.

Whether it's intentional or not the supposed victims of these crimes appear to be making it very difficult for authorities to separate the wheat from the chaff.

re: #21 jaunte

Is it normal practice to pull up in the suspect's driveway during the course of a SWAT raid?

Nope. SWAT teams are generally called in during dire emergencies. Here's a PDF I found of some general policies and procedures for SWAT:

[Link: ntoa.org...]

Missions assigned to SWAT teams shall include: hostage rescue, barricade, sniper, high-risk warrant service and high-risk apprehension, dignitary protection, terrorism response, special assignments and other incidents which exceed the capability and/or capacity of an agency's first responders and/or investigative units.

That doesn't sound to me like a bunch of guys who are going to make sure they park in your driveway or maintain the integrity of your azaleas.

I had a thought: We've been looking at this as 'either conservative bloggers did this or Kimberlain did this'. Could it possibly be both? That's exactly what has to be checked.

There should be 911 and police records showing deployment of SWAT.

Anything's possible, and not having all the calls to police available doesn't help our understanding. As far as I can tell the supposed calls about RS McCain and Erickson were never released. Fact is there's no evidence for anybody in particular, but there is some very questionable behavior and lazy reporting going on.

Who was first, Patterico maybe? The phone call he's put up on Youtube is dated from July of last year. One nitpick I have is that in spite of his reporting that's clearly not a 911 call and there's no evidence that there was an actual SWAT response, but these terms have somehow become catchall now. The facts are just as egregiously criminal but somehow saying that the Lomita County Sherrif's main line was called, a false report made and that cops visited Frey's home in response doesn't sound as good as saying OMG911SWAT.

Anyway, the main thing I have a problem with is the bullshit grandstanding by the supposed victims. They seem to know everything but can't prove any of it or provide even the slightest bit of even circumstantial evidence to support their preformed conspiracy theory. Why any of these assholes trust each other in the first place is beyond me, and the last thing I'd be doing as a victim is going out of my way to name suspects publicly that the police haven't been able to pin anything on.

I'll wait and see if law enforcement and/or someone in the judicial brings forward a charge and evidence.

The way I see it, I have zero incentive to trust the bloggers selling this story. They have a history of lying for partisan reasons and lying to create a larger public profile.

It would seems to me that if this was something that was going to be investigated and (eventually) actionable, then both their lawyers and law enforcement would be suggesting they stop (1) speculating openly and making accusations (2) telling their "stories" in recordable media such that contradictions could be filed as evidence.

However, given the egos and derangement involved, the fact the accusers aren't doing the sensible legal thing is not a guarantee it didn't happen.

Also, if it turns out people have been SWATted, it means that they're the victims of a crime...it is not a magic emblem that makes them no longer liars and/or propagandists. Even if the basic template of what happened is true, I have no incentive to believe their particular version of what happend (see: Mr.Ericson's latest statement) without vigorous confirmation by an independent source.

So the question is: Will we Americans re-embrace the values that made ours the greatest nation in history, or will we continue on our current path toward the godless mirage of “redistributive change” – and the poverty and loss of liberty that always follow?

I'm always a little bit baffled by the "godless" part of this point of view towards any form of socialism or actively working to close the income gap, ie "redistribution." I understand that was a pretty big propaganda point during the Cold War, contrasting god-fearing Americans with the godless communists (even though the Orthodox Church continued to exist all throughout the existence of the USSR), but I always do wonder: how exactly is it "godless"? What exactly is it about blending a little socialism with your capitalism that is godless? I'd love to see the Bible verses for that. Oh wait. I'm pretty sure there aren't any. Hell, the entire book of Ruth hinges on Theocratically mandated redistribution of grain in the field corners. Seems like maybe government fiscal policy and it's relationship to ideas about God might be a bit more nuanced than "godfearing capitalists" and "godless socialists."

Let's get in a good shot of "AWwww" in:

How love of Billy the stray cat has finally brought four-year-old autistic boy out of his shell

Even simple tasks used to be fraught with difficulty for Fraser Booth.

The four-year-old, who is autistic, easily became overwhelmed by everyday events, resulting in tears and temper tantrums.

Then Billy the stray cat came along. Abandoned by his previous owner and rescued from a boarded-up council house by a charity, he had not had the easiest start to life.

But since their first meeting, Fraser and Billy have been inseparable – and the moggy has helped bring the little boy out of his shell.

Now, whether it’s playtime, storytime or bedtime, Billy is there to offer a reassuring paw.

And he is the first to sense when Fraser is getting frustrated, calming him down with a cuddle or comforting purr.

Fraser’s mother Louise said: ‘If Fraser is around or playing in the garden, Billy is never far away. It is like he is watching Fraser and calming his behaviour.

HAHA - Man, I wish these assholes luck:

In a revolt against Romney, at least 40 more national convention delegates asked to join 123 previous plaintiffs in a lawsuit against the Republican National Committee, and their attorney said hundreds more may soon follow suit.

The first 123 delegates, all from the 9th Circuit, sued the RNC, its Chairman Rince Priebus, and every state party chairman in the 9th Circuit in Federal Court on Monday, demanding the right to vote for the candidate of their choice on every ballot at the Republican National Convention, including the first.

The delegates claim the party violated federal law by forcing them to sign loyalty affidavits, under threat of perjury, to vote for Mitt Romney, though he is not yet the official nominee.

They also claimed that state party chairmen are fixing elections at state conventions and changing ballots so that all votes cast count for Romney.

"When nominating someone for a federal office, all delegates must be free to vote their conscience," Richard Gilbert, of Gilbert & Marlowe, attorney for the delegates, told Courthouse News in an interview Thursday.

Some Still Unclear on Definition of "Emergency"

They are giving me a hard time!" said a caller to the 911 dispatcher in East Hartford, Connecticut, on Wednesday. What outrage had They perpetrated this time? "I specifically asked for little turkey, and little ham, a lot of cheese and a lot of mayonnaise," he said, but the resulting sandwich was not to his liking.

"You're calling 911 because you don't like the way that they're making your sandwich?" the dispatcher asked. "Exactly," he confirmed. The caller claimed that the employees at the Grateful Deli were "playing games" with him, although it was not clear what game or games had been played. He said the employees were sisters, and that the sister who had made the sandwich had left, so it may have been the old make-the-sandwich-incorrectly-and-then-leave-and-have-your-sister-claim-ignorance game. "I just want to solve this the right way," the caller said, though it's not clear what "wrong way" he might have been contemplating.

"Just don't buy the sandwich," the dispatcher suggested.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West ‘bored in traffic’

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West were “looking kind of bored” while caught in dense Paris traffic on Sunday.

The couple are staying together at the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris, France.

The rapper, who is in the city for his Watch the Throne encore concert, went to a luxury car dealership and exited the establishment in white convertible Lamborghini.

Kanye and Kim went for a cruise en route to the Eiffel Tower and got caught in traffic for an hour in a three-mile trip.

Onlookers were astonished to see the couple in gridlock.

“It was actually kind of funny,” an observer recalled to People magazine. “I mean, how often do you see anyone behind the wheel of a Lamborghini looking kind of bored?”

Except that in the GOP's case, chaos would be a good thing.

The party has been bubbling under with all the xenophobia, racism, and general bigotry that the RWNJs represent for decades now. It took the election of a black man as POTUS for that bigotry to explode and become public for all to see.

The best thing for the GOP is a total party meltdown, with the bigots and the far right excised to the Constitution Party where they all belong, and a more sane, mature intelligent conservatism could take over. hHe does not understand that business is all about making profits. If that also involves employing people at decent wages, then that is fine.

But if maximizing returns means closing manufacturing in the USA, outsourcing production overseas and hiring laywyers to tweak tax laws instead of hiring engineers to find new products, then that is also how business is done.

118 EdDantes  Mon, Jun 18, 2012 3:07:13am

re: #117 Expand Your Ground

Business is all those things. Moving overseas is sometime the best way of remaining in business. Moving manufacturing and call centers off shore allows a business to stay in business and retain the engineers and others to innovate.
The lawyers they hire cannot tweak tax laws. Tax laws come from congress which is influenced but not controlled by business. They have to work together and it is good when each entity understands how the other works.

It is a good way of doing business, especially when those countryies have labor, safety and environmental standards that are laxer than those at home.

I do not mind the idea of competing with other nations on wages, that is what motivates us to be more productive, but when we let other nations undercut us on workplace and environmental safety, then we are doing nobody a favor over the long run.

General Electric has the largest legal department of any firm in the world. It also managed to pay no US taxes last year.

The lawyers do not tweak the laws, they just find ways to apply them. And if it is more profitable for a company to hire a lawyer to avoid taxes than for them to hire an engineer to generate revenue, then they are going to do the corporate thing.

This assumes the Pirate offense gets to the Twins bullpen of course. ;)

Given the Pirates home record and recent performance (aside from the thrashing inflicted by the Orioles) the more likely result is the Pirates taking 2 of 3 and maintaining their hover position a few games over .500 while falling further behind Cincinnati*.

I've been rooting for Philly teams most of my life. I've listened to 610 AM maybe 4 times. That was only because I was too lazy to change the station after listening to a Flyers game.

I found an interesting link from Fark this morning - if reports are to be believed, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is done for as President of Iran. The linked article details that he has supposedly been having it out with Supreme Leader Ali Khomeini, and losing badly. This could get interesting.

That fight has been going on for years now. He has as much power as the grand Ayatollah allows him and not a drop more. Probably frustrating for a dictator-wanna-be.

It's one thing for a pizza store to not fall for prank pizza calls - namely not delivering orders that don't pass the smell test. The problem is that the police have to take calls relating to domestic violence, shootings, bomb threats, etc. seriously - even if they're pranks. Because the one time they don't go and investigate/send out a unit is the time that there's the real deal.

Right, but I fail to see that a call comes in about something and the first thing they do is deploy SWAT. I could see them sending out an officer or two (or the sheriff deputies as the original story states) to verify and confirm to dispatch that they need to mobilize the SWAT team (at a great expense) or not. I just don't see any police department getting a call and instantly gathering, equipping, and mobilizing a SWAT response on just the word of a caller.

In most all locales, SWAT participation/membership/whatever is very much a part-time gig for the officers involved. They are not sitting in an awesome black Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles Combat Van (TM) 24/7 waiting to be sent out to shoot at shit. If speed is of the essence, I cannot imagine that they would be the first unit on the scene. You'd send somebody who was already out and about to confirm the situation, even if mobilizing the SWAT team had zero real cost.

You remember Richland County. It’s the county where Sheriff Leon Lett put out a press release a few years ago to celebrate the new tank from the Pentagon’s 1033 program—one with a turreted, belt-fed, 360-degree rotating machine gun that shoots .50 caliber ammunition, and that he charmingly named “The Peacemaker.” He’s also the one who sent his SWAT team into the homes of University of South Carolina students whose only transgression was to have appeared in the same photo where Michael Phelps was pictured smoking pot.

Right. So sending in a fully equipped SWAT team right off would be detrimental. Sending a couple plain cloths officers to walk or drive past the place in question to assess the situation would be much more prudent. This whole "someone called SWAT and dispatched them to my house" just sounds far too lame to be taken seriously. The pizza delivery was just a means of comparison, as the question about the phone number for SWAT. You just don't call up and say "send the SWAT team". There is some verification steps that take place, some form of chain of command that assess the situation first. Not full blown raid tactics.

Same author (Balko) in the Huffington Post last week:

Pentagon Suspends Program That Gives Military Weapons To Cops
[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com...]

Peter Kraska, a criminologist at the University of Eastern Kentucky, has long argued that even when agencies abide by the Pentagon's rules, the program has still been a factor in the militarization of American police forces, producing a more reactionary, aggressive style of policing. Kraska, who has surveyed the prevalence of SWAT teams and SWAT raids over a 30-year period, found that by 1997, 90 percent of U.S. cities with a population of 50,000 or more had their own SWAT or similar paramilitary police unit. That's twice as many as a decade earlier. The overall number of SWAT-like raids jumped from a few thousand per year in the early 1980s to around 50,000 per year by 2005, when Kraska stopped sending out his survey.

In 2000 the National Journal reported, that between 1997 and 1999 alone, the Pentagon program distributed more than $700 million in military gear to local police departments. The gear was comprised of "253 aircraft (including six- and seven- passenger airplanes, and UH-60 Black- hawk and UH-1 Huey helicopters were among those sent out), 7,856 M-16 rifles, 181 grenade launchers, 8,131 bulletproof helmets, and 1,161 pairs of night-vision goggles" among other equipment.

50,000 SWAT raids a year 6 years ago. The numbers are going up, not down.

And that is showmanship and arrogance by an individual that should not have that kind of power available to him. He is not an anonymous caller asking for the kill team to be sent, he is the supposed leader of that team.

Same with the article you linked above. Those are pretty much over zealous commanders and/or officers that go overboard in the execution of their duties (either by mistake or for personal glory). The whole SWAT'ing thing is based on a "person" of unknown/hacked origin making a report and the first response is to send an elite/expensive to deploy group to respond.

Oh, I have and it is wrong. As I stated before, some of it is commanders looking for personal glory and some it is mistakes. I also think for some it is an attempt at justifying their position or manpower requests that they don't want cut. From the you can't make it up department, Glenn Beck is pushing development of a Glee-killer.

Glenn Beck says he’s poised to destroy “Glee” with his own conservative, virtuous version of the hit TV show.

The pundit and former Fox News host outlined his next move in the crusade to defend family values during the Faith & Freedom Coalition conference in Washington, D.C. Friday.

Beck said that he’s appalled by ‘Glee,’ which tackles issues like bullying, teen sexuality and LGBT issues, but he’s also in awe of its success.

"It's horrifying some of the things that they're teaching high schoolers," the talk radio host said. "But it's brilliantly done. It's produced, brilliantly. Its music, brilliant. Its acting, brilliant. Its cinematography, brilliant. All of it!"

For those that don't know, Glee is a program aired on the News Corp's Fox broadcasting channel.

Among the issues Glee has tackled is the issue of bullying, sexual identity, racism, and of coming out - both to fellow students and to one's parents, and teen pregnancy.

Beck sees something wrong with that? Oh wait - being gay is bad.

The teen pregnancy was carried to term - and the baby given up for adoption (not aborted).

So, what's Beck's beef? That it isn't conservative enough? That they aren't stringing up Chris Colfer's character? That he and the other Gleeks are not being stuffed into lockers sufficiently? Oversexed students?

That too is a reflection of student life in high schools - but once again, Glee showed the consequences of Paradise by the Dashboard light - a teen pregnancy and the emotional toll on those involved.

Don't expect much to come from Beck's project, it's just another one of his vanity projects.

To the untrained eye, it could have been the first signal of the end of the world as nuclear war broke out.

But instead of anything sinister, the giant mushroom cloud spotted in the skies over the Chinese capital last week was simply a brilliant showcase of the wonder of nature.

The huge cloud, which appeared on Thursday, gradually took the shape of an explosion from an atomic bomb.

But instead of being a danger to residents or marking imminent Armageddon the phenomenon was thought to be completely harmless.

The X-men X-girls are among us:

The Humans With Super Human Vision

An unknown number of women may perceive
millions of colors invisible to the rest of us. One British scientist is trying to track them down and understand their extraordinary power of sight.

[...] Living among us are people with four cones, who might experience a range of colors invisible to the rest. It’s possible these so-called tetrachromats see a hundred million colors, with each familiar hue fracturing into a hundred more subtle shades for which there are no names, no paint swatches. And because perceiving color is a personal experience, they would have no way of knowing they see far beyond what we consider the limits of human vision.

Over the course of two decades, Newcastle University neuroscientist Gabriele Jordan and her colleagues have been searching for people endowed with this super-vision. Two years ago, Jordan finally found one. A doctor living in northern England, referred to only as cDa29 in the literature, is the first tetrachromat known to science. She is almost surely not the last.

[...]

Apparently only women have this mutation.

Bryce Harper is a ball player. A very good rookie, but I could name any number of other rookies from the past 20 years who have done what Harper has done.

Let's see (at the SS position alone): Derek Sanderson Jeter; Alex Rodriguez, Jose Reyes, Nomar Garciaparra. All were known for taking the extra base, hustling, power (in ARod and Nomar's case). Those four also were indicative of the face of baseball. Latino, African American, and mixed background.

Of the four, two are likely headed to the Hall of Fame (Jeter and ARod - with ARod now at 3b), one had a very productive career shortened by injuries (Nomar), the Reyes still battling injuries and potentially with several more productive years ahead of him.

You could argue that what was written of Harper could apply to any of the aforementioned players.

Great players do the little things well. Taking extra bases on outfielder lackadaisical play, learning the pitchers, and improving from season to season.

It's not a sign of political leanings.

All the world is a stage revision:

Cult springs up around Hungary's WWII leader

They came in droves - war veterans and far-right politicians, Hussars on horseback and guardsmen in camouflage. About 1,000 people gathered in this village over the weekend to unveil a bronze bust of Admiral Miklos Horthy, Hungary's ruler between 1920 and 1944.

Most Hungarians view Horthy as an authoritarian who dragged Hungary into a disastrous alliance with Adolf Hitler and was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Hungarian Jews in the Holocaust.

But as Hungary struggles to fend off recession and nationalist sentiment rises, there is a growing movement to recast Horthy as a patriotic hero who stood up to the Soviet Union and only reluctantly threw in his lot with Hitler. And critics say the populist government of Viktor Orban is doing little to stop the cult that has sprung up around the wartime leader.

Israel Blames Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood For Grad Attack

Israeli security officials accused the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt of asking Hamas to fire grad missiles from northern Sinai. Two days ago Grad missiles were fired from northern Sinai and landed in an open area in south of the country.

The officials said that the missiles were fired by Bedouins living in Sinai, part of a cell that operates on behalf of Hamas, and that the attack was carried out to fulfill a request from the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt on the eve of the second round of presidential elections that were carried out Saturday and Sunday.

Meanwhile 3 'militants' crossed into killing an Israeli citizen before two of them were killed in a gun battle with Israeli troops and there are reports that Israel briefly sent tanks to the Egyptian border after the indecent.

'Good' Taliban commander halts polio vaccinations over drone strikes

A Taliban leader in North Waziristan who is favored by the Pakistani state has banned polio vaccinations until the US stops conducting drone airstrikes in the tribal areas.

Hafiz Gul Bahadar, the senior Taliban leader in North Waziristan who is known to shelter top al Qaeda leaders, said the polio vaccination program is "used to spy for America against the mujahideen." A statement released by Bahadar referenced Dr. Shakil Afridi, the Pakistani doctor who aided the US in finding and killing Osama bin Laden. Adridi is currently serving a 33-year prison sentence for charges of supporting the Laskar-e-Islam, an Islamist terror group based in Khyber.

"As long as drone strikes are not stopped in Waziristan there will be a ban on administering polio jabs," a statement released by Bahadar's group said, according to The News.

"No one will have the right to complain about damage in case of any violation .... Polio campaigns are also used to spy for America against the mujahideen (holy warriors), one example of which is Dr. Shakil Afridi," the statement continued.

Iran was behind bomb plot against Israeli diplomats, investigators find

A multinational investigation into bomb plots targeting Israeli diplomats earlier this year has produced the clearest evidence yet that Iran was involved, illustrating the risks to the west if it fails to reach detente with Tehran over its nuclear weapons programme.

...In India, local agencies told ministers a bomb attack which badly injured the wife of the Israeli military attaché in New Delhi in February was the work of an Iranian "security entity". Their conclusions have not previously been made public and Indian officials have made significant efforts to avoid blaming Tehran, an ally and oil supplier.

The governments of Georgia and Thailand, which both uncovered bomb plots on the day of the Delhi attack, have also not officially blamed Iran.

European intelligence officials told the Guardian they now found it difficult to judge Tehran's "risk calculus".

Not that $314 is tons of cash in the big scheme of things --

The administrative costs are about $314 million nationally, says Simon, although there's no national data on the total value of EBT contracts. And the price tag will continue to rise as more people enroll in the program.

According to USDA data JP Morgan Electronic Financial Services holds 24 such government contracts for SNAP EBT cards nationwide but they and other contractors are not required to produce itemized revenues. They should be, Simon says.

Last time I checked, the boy scouts practice "two deep" leadership (IE if you're gonna be alone with a scout be "alone" with them with another adult as well) just so that one person can't get away with something like this...

Granted last I checked the boyscouts doesn't accept actively homosexual scouts so its far from a perfect organization (and I say this as an Eagle Scout with an Eagle Scout for a brother and an Eagle Scout for a father)

Sandusky hid what he was for years. It wouldn't have mattered if the organization accepted homosexuals or not. Using Bryan's so called logic, you should never let your child get involved in any activity because it may involve homosexuals.

So, I'm reading/listening to Paris 1919 by Margaret Macmillian now. Because, I guess, I didn't get enough of European History in the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich.

Anyway, I learned that Rupert Murdoch's father had some part in the whole debacle. And that the "white only Australia" movement was quite active at that time.

It's not like an adult would make up a non-profit organization just to lure in young boys, right?

No. They are making decisions/ rulings today.

re: #262 Eclectic Infidel

It is a technical violation of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty (which generally prohibits tanks present within the exclusion zones near the Sinai border except when coordinated between Egypt and Israel), but that doesn't mean that Israel wasn't warranted to use military force to protect its citizens from yet another terror attack originating from Sinai. The reports also indicate that Israel withdrew the tanks immediately following the elimination of the terror threat.

It's my belief that the this attack (and likely others going forward) are meant to create such a violation - to get Israel to violate the treaty so that the Brotherhood in Egypt can use it as a pretext to abrogate the treaty. It's one of the reasons that the military is trying to limit the results of the presidential treaty but that's playing with fire and consolidates the power in the ruling junta.

Like father, like son...

Beau Biden takes shot at Mitt Romney, hits Gov. Bev Perdue

Beau Biden, the son of the Democratic vice president, went "off script," as he called it, to fire a shot a Republican Mitt Romney but hit Gov. Bev Perdue at the same time.

At the N.C. Democratic Party's annual fundraising dinner, Biden mentioned that Romney didn't seek a second term as Massachusetts governor, suggesting his failed economic policies hurt him. "I've never met a successful politician who didn't run again," said Biden, the Delaware attorney general.

The crowd collectively groaned. Biden's line sounded similar to what Republicans say about another governor who isn't seeking re-election: North Carolina Democrat Bev Perdue.

Ouch.

Heh.

re: #246 Killgore Trout

P.S. Quixotic. That's the word I was searching for to describe him. I didn't really see any malice in him, just a sort of extreme idealism. That's not to say that such an attitude cannot cause problems or harm when someone considers himself to be on a higher mission—clearly it can and does, as is typical of any form of extremism.

Anyway, I thought it was a pretty even-handed documentary. By no means did it portray him as some sort of hero, nor did it portray him as the devil incarnate.

This is interesting.

Russia reportedly sending 2 warships with marines to Syria

BEIRUT -- Russia is preparing to dispatch a pair of warships carrying a contingent of Black Sea Fleet marines to its logistics base in the Syrian port of Tartus, the Russian Interfax news agency reported Monday, in what appeared to be another sign of the deteriorating security situation in the strife-ridden nation.

The report quoted an unidentified Russian naval source saying the amphibious ships Nikolay Filchenkov and Tsezar Kunikov, accompanied by the rescue tug SB-15, were “preparing for a non-routine departure” for Tartus, Russia’s only Mediterranean base.

There was no official confirmation from the Russian government. [Updated June 18, 8:55 a.m.: “I can neither confirm nor deny the report at this stage,” Andrei Luzik, a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, said by telephone.]

The purpose of the reported deployment was to assist in securing the base amid escalating violence in Syria and to aid in the possible evacuation of Russian citizens from Syria should the need arise.

My pack leader slept with a man. Her son was in my pack. She didn't try to seduce any of the members as far as I knew. Just treated us like kids doing scout things.

Maybe because these bigots can't control their urges they think everyone is like that. Maybe Fischer is the one who needs help.

Did Mr Fischer forget to use the word "alleged"? Personal feelings on the matter aside, Jerry Sandusky has not been convicted of anything yet. Innocent until proven guilty and all that.

Press releases... we are drowning in press releases:

Research breakthrough: High brain integration underlies winning performances

Scientists trying to understand why some people excel — whether as world-class athletes, virtuoso musicians, or top CEOs — have discovered that these outstanding performers have unique brain characteristics that make them different from other people.

A study published in May in the journal Cognitive Processing found that 20 top-level managers scored higher on three measures — the Brain Integration Scale, Gibbs's Socio-moral Reasoning questionnaire, and an inventory of peak experiences — compared to 20 low-level managers that served as matched controls. This is the fourth study in which researchers have been able to correlate the brain's activity with top performance and peak experiences, having previously studied world-class athletes and professional classical musicians.

"What we have found," says Fred Travis, director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition at Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, "is an astonishing integration of brain functioning in high performers compared to average-performing controls. We are the first in the world to show that there is a brain measure of effective leadership."

[...]

The researchers found it's not just that their brains function differently; the world-class performers also had particular subjective experiences that were associated with their top performances.

Called peak experiences, these experiences are characterized by happiness, inner calm, maximum wakefulness, effortlessness and ease of functioning, absence of fear, transcendence of ordinary time and space, and a sense of perfection and even invincibility.

[...]

Ummm... er.. make that Ommm....

Girls Scouts is for all girls.

I mentioned this to a born again Xian I sometimes work with, who's kid was heavily involved in Boy Scouts. The exact phrase I used was "I thought the Girls Scouts didn't have a stick up their ass about gays the way Boy Scouts do?"

I was then informed that the Girl Scouts have a lesbian agenda. Apparently the cookies shaped like Billie Jean King and Rachel Maddow should have been the tip off.
