The material contains much new information about the hunt before and after 9/11 for bin Laden, the development of the drone campaign in AfPak, and al-Qaida’s relationship with America’s ally, Pakistan. Perhaps most damning are the documents showing that the CIA had bin Laden in its cross hairs a full year before 9/11 — but didn’t get the funding from the Bush administration White House to take him out or even continue monitoring him. The CIA materials directly contradict the many claims of Bush officials that it was aggressively pursuing al-Qaida prior to 9/11, and that nobody could have predicted the attacks. “I don’t think the Bush administration would want to see these released, because they paint a picture of the CIA knowing something would happen before 9/11, but they didn’t get the institutional support they needed,” says Barbara Elias-Sanborn, the NSA fellow who edited the materials.

Color me shocked.

Wesley Clark To Join Todd Palin, Other Minor Celebrities On NBC Reality Show

From Supreme Allied Commander Europe for NATO and Democratic presidential candidate to reality TV host? That’s now the name of the game for retired General Wesley Clark.

NBC announced on Tuesday that Clark will host “Stars Earn Stripes,” a “fierce and emotionally charged new competition show” that premieres in August. Samantha Harris, of “Dancing With the Stars” fame, will co-host.

Clark will join other bygone celebrities, including singer Nick Lachey, Olympic gold medalist Picabo Street and papa grizzly Todd Palin. Other cast members include: world boxing champion Laila Ali, actor Dean Cain, actor and former NFL player Terry Crews, trainer Dolvett Quince and WWE wrestler Eve Torres.

I don't think that's a pick guard.

I went looking for the luthier that built his guitar - a guy named Nick Benjamin.

That is decidedly an odd cutaway, but the bit of plastic around it does seem to serve as a pickguard.

BTW - I just finished a web site for a luthier here on Long Island. As a guitarist, you'll probably appreciate his work. Web site here.

The position of the guard is really bad for playing with a pick unless your hand position is weird, but it is in a great place for percussion.

Well, that counts as bizzaro.

I always liked General Clark. Sometime read about the leg wound he got in Vietnam as a LT and what it took to keep from being forced out on a medical. Then later in the Balkans he did as good as anyone could hope to and, in the process, lost no US Army soldiers in combat. Since I almost got my ass sent there (I had 2 weeks too few left on my term to be legally deployed - whew!) that ment more than a little to me.

Why yes, yes I did work for his campaign and cast a meaningless (by that time) vote for him in our primary,

Very few, but for every commercial program you see on Windows or Apple, you'll find a comparable program for Linux.

Programs like Chrome and Firefox do have versions that work on Linux. OpenOffice or LibreOffice are much like Wordperfect and the older Word, and can read and write the new WP and Word file formats.

What are you looking for?

Getting paid well to do something you enjoy doing is a blessing unto itself. Sometimes the people you work with make up for not no-so-enjoyable job. And sometimes the opposite occurs.

There are dozens of different versions of Linux out there, each of them with advantages and disadvantages but the common thread is the structure of the OS. Linux has less overhead than Windows so less RAM is needed and many processes are faster. Apple uses a version of Unix in their systems which is the original, Linux is the copy. Linux is free.

It is quite true that Linux is less prone to virus attacks, partly because of the permission structure and partly because of the number of virus scripts/programmers out there.

Consider a Macintosh then. With it's Unix underpinnings it can be run as if it were a very well supported Linux box. Or even better as The Best of Both Worlds.

Joe "the plumber" continues with his idiocy, and now has garnered some international attention:

'Joe the Plumber' blames Holocaust on gun control in new ad; Jewish Democrats demand apology

Rarely do the sideshows outlive the main campaign, but Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher from Ohio, better known as "Joe the Plumber," who became a national celebrity during the 2008 presidential elections, is trying to defy the rule and reinvent himself as an independent politician.

[...]

The National Jewish Democratic Council President and CEO David Harris demanded Wurzelbacher apologize. "Using the memories of the six million Jews killed in the Holocaust to make a political point is never appropriate, under any circumstances", he said.

[...]

In the recent past, the Holocaust proved to be a troubling topic for some of the Republican candidates, but Wurzelbacher certainly had time to think about his message, which appears in his online campaign ad. In the video, the candidate is seen holding his gun, shooting vegetables and, in between, revealing his position that links gun control laws, the Holocaust and the Armenian genocide.

[...]

American politics and gun fetishists... they seem inseparable.

If there are any football fans out here, there is a brilliant parody of this on YouTuibe, "The QB that I used to know". it is from the perspective of a Colts and Broncos fan is absolutely hilarious. And there is a hot chick.

I think it is better than the original, but that might only be the hot chick.

But it is very well done and football fans will love it.

I tried it and came up with nothing relevant. Do you have a direct link?

Islam is ‘a religion of war,’ says son of Hamas founder on a visit to his ‘beloved Israel’

Yes, it's another story about Mosab Hassan Yousef. This story emphasizes his upcoming movie:

Mosab Hassan Yousef has a knack for controversy. The son of Hamas founder Sheikh Hassan Yousef, he has already broken every taboo in the Palestinian book. He has worked for Israeli intelligence and converted to Christianity. Now he is developing a new film which is sure to be no less sensational: a biography of the life of Muhammad, the prophet of Islam.

Yousef, 33, broke ranks with Hamas in 1997 and began working for the Israeli internal intelligence service Shin Bet. Ten years later, after helping Israel thwart dozens of terror attacks and arrest many members of his former movement, Yousef left for the United States where he sought political asylum and later converted to Christianity.

[...]

“Islam is not a religion of peace. It’s a religion of war,” he said. “Muslims don’t even know the true nature of their own religion.”

To that end, Yousef decided to produce a film about the touchiest subject of all: the revered prophet of Islam, Muhammad. He says the film is based on a traditional biography of Muhammad written by the eighth-century Muslim historian Ibn Ishaq.

[...]

Well, we all have our crosses to bear. I will note that when someone converts from one highly dogmatic religion to another that person has not really changed as much as he'd like to pretend.

I would have though the likes of Geller would be all over this, but apparently she's not recovered from her earlier conspiracy about him.

Yet this latest statement of Mosab's about Islam is sure to resonate well in the wingnut crowd.

Yeah I definitely think he had good ideas since as I said I'm a Wilsonian on foreign policy. I think he was blinded by his prejudices too and you can see that in McMillan's book when she talks about how he viewed Irish independence. I think Truman was better than Wilson in large part because of that. Truman used racist language in private but he ended up becoming the most progressive president on race since Lincoln.

Truman was also able to differentiate between his personal feelings about social class due to background and wanting to do what was right in terms of citizen rights, the New Deal (and his Fair Deal) and what he should do as President.

Which I think is also what drove Lincoln as well. Knowing what should be done, and then trying to get it done.

Big believer in equal protection for *all* under the Constitution. And also one who exceeded politician to become statesman. FDR was essentially the consumate operator; a major reason he could keep getting re-elected. And FDR was also a master of the non-answer and getting everyone thinking he supported them. I'm still a bit surprised about the line-up of communist vs capitalist after the Treaty. I don't know why the racism surprises me so much either. Just basic ignorance of that part of history, I guess.

And trying not to make biases based on one book.

It seems that the Wilson vision was so advanced, but non-inclusive --which was medieval. There is a dualism there I don't quite comprehend.

Probably one of my favorite biographies. I like McCullough's story of why he decided to write on Truman too. His father had hated Truman while president but then I guess it was after Watergate and the older McCullough said you know that Truman wasn't that bad. I have a special weakness for Truman I admit because he was really kind to some distant relatives who lost a son in WWII.

I think that it is heavily connected to Wilson's family background, upbringing, and the society of the late 1800s. A lot of stuff accumulates there that affects outlook and reactions due to how engrained it is.

re: #165 sattv4u2

Cool

TP doesn't waste any time. Right in the 1st sentence,,, BUSH'S FAULT!!!

1. Issa Has No Case: Issa’s uncovered no evidence showing Holder bears any blame for the botched operations begun under George W. Bush, even though the Justice Department turned over thousands of pages of documents concerning the operations. Instead of accepting this fact, Issa has requested many more documents containing confidential information regarding ongoing law enforcement investigations, and is now threatening to hold Holder in contempt if these documents are not turned over. Holder is entirely correct to withhold these documents, however, because Justice Department documents are not subject to congressional subpoena if they would reveal “strategies and procedures that could be used by individuals seeking to evade [DOJ's] law enforcement efforts.”

172 Varek Raith  Wed, Jun 20, 2012 7:23:49am

2. Reagan’s Justice Department Agreed With Holder: President Reagan’s Justice Department warned in the 1980s that the Constitution’s separation of powers prevents the kind of documents Issa is seeking from being revealed to Congress because of the risk that the legislature could “exert pressure or attempt to influence the prosecution of criminal cases.”

173 Varek Raith  Wed, Jun 20, 2012 7:23:56am

3. Law Enforcement Rejects Issa’s Witchhunt: Issa’s efforts to embarrass Holder are an unnecessary distraction that hinders the Department of Justice’s ability to do its real job. As an organization representing numerous senior law enforcement officials warned Issa, his efforts are “an impediment to the vigorous enforcement of violence and crime.”

174 Varek Raith  Wed, Jun 20, 2012 7:24:05am

4. Even Top Republicans Think Issa Goes Too Far: After Issa leaked his plans to pursue contempt charges to the media, the House Republican leadership pressured him to back off. Indeed, even House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) has indicated that Issa is overreaching.

175 erik_t  Wed, Jun 20, 2012 7:24:09am

re: #171 Varek Raith

You see, if we mention that Bush is mentioned, we can move directly into an attack on the source rather than an actual discussion of the argument.

176 Varek Raith  Wed, Jun 20, 2012 7:24:11am

5. Issa Is Fixated On A Conspiracy Theory: Perhaps the most bizarre aspect of this affair is what Issa once suggested his investigation will uncover. In an interview with Sean Hannity, Issa claimed that the Obama administration “made a crisis” when they continued the Bush-era gunrunning operations because they wanted to “us[e] this crisis to somehow take away or limit people’s Second Amendment rights.” This accusation originates from a former militiaman who supports violent resistance to imagined government attempts to seize his guns. And it amounts to an accusation that a series of botched gun stings that begun during the Bush Administration were actually part of a secret Obama plot to release guns to Mexican drug lords, so that those guns could then be used to kill federal agents, which would then cause a national uprising in support of gun control.

re: #165 sattv4u2

Not at all. It states that the program Issa wants information about was a program started under the Bush Administration. Problems with the program then continued into the Obama Administration (yet another continuation of more than a few domestic and foreign policy objectives/decisions showing that Obama wasn't as radical as the GOP continues to portray).

Then, the TP piece notes that the Obama Administration is taking the same position as prior administrations have taken on producing the evidence Issa is demanding, including the Reagan Administration. Executive privilege is a proper response to Issa's demands, and Issa's overreaching in search of a smoking gun to fulfill one of his pet conspiracy theories.

'Al-Qaeda gunman' releases two hostages in Toulouse bank siege

The man fired at least one shot in the CIC bank, which has been cordoned off, a police union source said.

The scene is close to the house in which Islamic extremist Mohamed Merah, who also said he was a member of al-Qaeda, was shot dead by police after a 32-hour siege in March.

The 23-year-old killed seven people in and around Toulouse after opening fire from a scooter at French paratroopers and outside a Jewish school.
French TV station BFM said the branch director and three others were originally taken hostage inside the bank in today's incident.

Two hostages have now been released, however.

According to reports the gunman has asked to negotiate with the same RAID police force that killed Merah, who authorities said had received training in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

I agree but they think the problem was that Bush was in fact not conservative enough. They think they lost Congress in 2006 because they strayed away from the Contract with America principles. It's delusional thinking and it's typical of modern conservatives who think only their ideology is the solution.

Conservatism like liberalism did in the 80's and 90's is going to have to adapt to a changing world. I hear so-cons talk about younger voters such as myself supporting gay marriage and just dismiss it as youthful idealism and naivete. Social conservatism as we know it is stuck in the past and rigid.

re: #236 Mattand

Any branch of government, or any bureaucracy, isn't going to willingly give up power it has garnered by whatever means (legislative actions, executive privilege, etc.) without a fight.

For the Executive branch, the presidency of G.W. Bush has meant a tremendous expansion of presidential power - perhaps the biggest expansion since the days of FDR. It also meant a significant expansion of governmental power and bureaucratic actions - think reorganization of homeland security into the DHS and establishment of the TSA - the biggest reorganization of defense since the National Security Act of 1947 (aka Defense Reorganization Act establishing the Dept of Defense and current defense establishment - JCS, Departments of Army, Navy, Air Force).

President Obama isn't going to give up powers accumulated in the Office by his predecessor(s). He's going on precedent, and he's got the Constitution to back him too.

It's one reason why Presidents should be loath to expand their powers too greatly - since overreach by one may lead to countervailing decisions by successors to overturn those same decisions by similar grounds.

240 GunstarGreen  Wed, Jun 20, 2012 8:33:29am

Given a sufficient size, a group of people will never come to an agreement on a topic that perfectly satisfies all parties involved. This is fairly common wisdom (for what that's worth), and has been for a very long time. The people that founded this nation understood that, which is why so much of the process of governing is based around compromise and methods by which to arrive at compromise, and why there are methods in place (presidential veto among them) to force a more stringent double-check that compromise has been reached by requiring a greater consensus.

That the modern GOP effectively requires, as part of its ideological vetting, a commitment to avoiding compromise at all costs is perhaps one of the most egregiously anti-"Intent of the Founders" positions one can hold.

Well, prior to about 2000 that made sense. That's because most incomes went up in line with inflation.

With the past decade of declining median income the disparity matters.

Russian ship carrying helicopters to Syria turns back

A Russian ship carrying attack helicopters to the Syrian government turned back toward home Tuesday after its London-based insurance carrier canceled coverage, following a warning from the British government that the delivery would violate European Union sanctions.

U.S. and British officials said the ship, which had reached the North Sea near Scotland, appeared to be returning to its home port on the Baltic Sea.

The Obama administration declined to claim credit for stopping the journey of the Russian-owned merchant vessel Alaed. But the insurance tactic was originated by the Treasury Department four months ago to prevent at least two shipments of Syrian oil from reaching the open market via Iran, a senior administration official said.

Israeli Strike Kills Man Accused in Earlier Attack

JERUSALEM — The Israeli military killed a Palestinian man it identified as a militant in Gaza on Wednesday and said he was involved in the planning and execution of an attack along Israel’s border with Egypt this week that killed an Israeli construction worker.

The military saidanother man who also played a central role in that attack on Monday was severely wounded in the airstrike.

The joint military-intelligence operation came as Israel and Gaza entered a third day of cross-border clashes, with Israel carrying out more airstrikes against militant squads and sites in Gaza and Palestinian groups firing barrages of rockets from Gaza into southern Israel.

The military said that the injured man, Mohammed Rashdan, a resident of Rafah in southern Gaza, was a member of the Tawhid and Jihad organization and that he had been involved in weapons transfers, firing rockets and mortar shells at Israel and smuggling terror operatives in and out of Gaza.

The man who was killed, Ghaleb Armilat, had assisted Mr. Rashdan in planning Monday’s attack, according to the military.

With a massive prison overhaul plan already underway – as well as the passage in March of Bill C-10, a suite of crime legislation that most observers agree will see more Canadians face prison time and keep those already locked up behind bars for longer – it seems the American industry's interest in its neighbour to the north could not come at a better time.

Al-Qaeda leader urges Egypt to cancel peace treaty with Israel

Al-Qaeda’s leader has urged Egypt to cancel its peace treaty with Israel and to establish Islamic rule, according to an audio message released Sunday.

He said the goal was to stop Israel from turning Jerusalem into a Jewish city.

...“The continued crimes of the Zionists reveal the truth that these crimes could not have reached this level without taking Egypt out of the battlefield by the peace treaty signed by (late president Anwar) Sadat, the traitor,” he said.

He said, “if we want to confront the Judaization of Jerusalem, there is no way other than applying the Shariah (Islamic) laws, exerting pressure on Israel and ending the treaty.”

Egypt and Israel signed their peace treaty in 1979.

Texas father who beat daughter’s molestor to death will not be charged

SHINER, Texas — A young Texas father who beat to death with his fists a man molesting his 5-year-old daughter will not be charged, authorities said Tuesday as they released a dramatic emergency call tape of the dad frantically pleading for help before the hired ranch helper died.

A Lavaca County grand jury Tuesday declined to indict the 23-year-old father in the death of Jesus Mora Flores, 47. Prosecutors said the grand jury reached same conclusion as police after reviewing the evidence: The father was authorized to use deadly force to protect his daughter.

Same as they've ever been. AQ has been opposed to Israel's existence, and seeing how AQ's longtime number 2 (and current head) Zawahiri is formerly of Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ), this hardly surprising as a bit of news.

Egyptian Islamic Jihad was behind the assassination of Anwar Sadat for signing the peace treaty with Israel. It's one of the reasons that the military cracked down against the Muslim Brotherhood and limited political participation in Egypt - to thwart the Islamists.

Zawahiri was thrown in prison for his involvement in the Sadat assassination but released after serving out his sentence (and later merged EIJ into AQ after meeting with OBL).

What's lost on Zawahiri and the other Islamists is that the peace deal has been a boon to Egypt. They got tourism dollars and the benefits of not having to bulk up a military, plus they got back the Sinai and its mineral resources. A warmer peace would have benefited Egyptians even more.

Now, the AQ, Islamists, and fellow travelers are hoping to thrust the region back into war because they don't want to see a Jewish state of Israel, let alone Israel's claims to Jerusalem or the territories.

Sex Toy Fools Entire Chinese Village

The report opens with Ye proclaiming the discovery of the mysterious object, the likes of which “not even an 80-year-old local man has seen.” Villagers crouch around the object, floating innocently in a water-filled bucket. “It has an eye and a nose, but we don’t know what it is,” says a man who was among the drillers who discovered the sex toy.

Describing the object’s qualities in explicit detail, Ye and the villager determine that it is a type of lingzhi, a shelf fungus of the Ganoderma lucidum species, which according to legend has the ability to give immortality. Asserting that the mushroom is rarely seen because it grows underground, she says, “When the Emperor Qin Shi Huang [the First emperor of China] was on the hunt for the secret to longevity, it is said he discovered this lingzhi was the answer.”

After the program aired, many viewers immediately recognized the object as a sex toy modeled after female genitalia, and online video of the report gained millions of views overnight. While the video received many comments lauding the station’s and villagers’ “purity,” the day after the program aired the Xi’an news station posted an apology on Sina Weibo, a Chinese blogging website.

In north Texas, store brands tend to run around $1 to $1.50 per 24 oz loaf. I think part of the reason for the lower prices is that we have two major bakeries in the Dallas area that supplies most of Texas, southern Oklahoma, and western Arkansas and Louisiana, and they are heavily competing with each other for who gets store-brand shelf space.
