Twitter Down Worldwide

An unusual outage
Technology • Views: 25,012

Usually when Twitter goes over capacity, you see a “fail whale” page with an error message, but today Twitter’s been completely offline for almost an hour, apparently across the whole world. Maybe an intern pushed the wrong button?

The Twitter Status blog has a terse message about it:

Users may be experiencing issues accessing Twitter. Our engineers are currently working to resolve the issue.

Good call!

Twitter goes down, productivity skyrockets

You've probably already noticed, but Twitter is down right now. In theory, this means that productivity should skyrocket around the world — as soon as we all stop frantically trying to refresh our Twitter feeds.

I was like this for a looooooong time. I only very recently (like, in the past two weeks) have started to find it enjoyable. As long as you don't subscribe to crap, it's a good way to keep track of current events. The trick is to subscribe to a lot of feeds, but not a lot of fluff. Post more relevant items, less crap about what you are eating for lunch...

FB blows...

It's the first step to Obama's long-plotted (ever since he was a boy in Kenya) repeal of the second amendment. You can tell because it is has nothing at all to do with guns and is thus designed to distract us and catch us completely unawares.

An then he's gonna steels all ur moneys and make u gay.

Interesting news from Slashdot (don't try the original source article at the moment as it is, indeed, slashdotted):

Gottesser writes with this excerpt from Bev Harris's Black Box Voting:

"I have found and posted the actual voter list software used widely throughout the USA (TN, WI, PA, CO, KS...) for Accenture voter registration and voter histories. I located the files on a magnetic backup tape of the hard drive of a county elections IT employee, part of a 120-gig set of discovery files. The Accenture voter registration / voter history software is highly problematic, and has been reported switching voter parties in Colorado, and losing voter histories in Tennessee. Although it is now widely known that Accenture voter list software gets it wrong, just WHY the program misreports voter information so often has never been explained. I am hoping that by releasing this software to the public, it may shed light on what's really going on with our voter registration systems. I also posted a Tennessee file with work orders and release notes which shows the Accenture software has a history of tripling votes in certain ('random') voter histories, going back to 2004. Except it is not random: Other files I discovered prove it is with primarily suburban Republican precincts that votes are somehow being recorded twice and sometimes three times for certain voters in the voter history report, and this didn't just happen in 2004; it also happened in the 2008 presidential primary and in May and August 2010, and according to election commission notes in Shelby County, also in the 2012 presidential primary. Computer buffs, have at it. Much source code exists within the structure because it is built on MS Access. I do not read source code, though I can see some structural problems with the software (for example, it allows political party ID to be set differently from one precinct to another)."

Republicans and their voter fraud projection syndrome!

Twitter was down? That would explain the disturbance in the Force that I felt. Millions of right wing voices snuffed out all at once, and suddenly reemerging, as though from #twittergulag amnesty.

Romney says he will ‘replace and supersede’ Obama’s immigration plan

Mitt Romney criticized President Barack Obama's immigration plan on Thursday, saying that as president, he would "put in place my own long-term solution that will replace and supersede the president's temporary measure." While that plan is still vague, it does not involve a path to legalization for any of the country's estimated 11 million illegal immigrants except for people who enlist in the military, according to a release from the campaign.

"Service guarantees citizenship! Would you like to know more?"

"As president, I won't settle for a stopgap measure," he said during his speech to the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Annual Conference in Orlando, Fla. "I will work with Republicans and Democrats to find a long-term solution. I will prioritize measures that strengthen legal immigration and make it easier. And I will address the problem of illegal immigration in a civil but resolute manner."

Pull the other one, it has bells on its.

Romney's claiming he'll do what Obama tried to do and was stopped from doing by Romney's party's monolithic opposition. Romney is either assuming (super)majorities in Congress, or that his congresses won't be as dickishly and ideologically partisan as Obama's. The latter would in fact be more likely. I don't think the Democrats have the stomach for the kind of destructive obstructionism the Republicans are willing to subject the country to.

George Zimmerman’s Own Words: ‘The Dispatcher Told Me Not To Follow The Suspect’

George Zimmerman heard the message loud and clear: Don’t follow Trayvon Martin.

In a statement he gave to police the same night he shot and killed the unarmed teen, Zimmerman wrote that he was returning to his vehicle after a police dispatcher told him over the phone to stop pursuing Martin.

“The dispatcher told me not to follow the suspect and that an officer was in route,” Zimmerman wrote in the statement, which was released to the public for the first time on Thursday morning. “As I headed back to my vehicle, the suspect emerged from the darkness and said ‘you got a problem?’”

Florida prosecutors who later charged Zimmerman with second-degree murder have a different take. In an affidavit filed in April, special prosecutor Angela Corey wrote that Zimmerman kept following Martin through the gated community despite being told to stop.

“Zimmerman disregarded the police dispatcher and continued to follow Martin who was trying to return to his home,” the affidavit said. “Zimmerman confronted Martin and a struggle ensued.”

This has been going on since AOL became popular. Most of the kids I see have their eyes glued to their iPhones either checking their messages, texting, or talking at 100 decibels about what shirt they're going to wear at the club that evening. But of course carrying a conversation soon became difficult after the popularity of television. I think focusing on Twitter is just part of a mis-directed popular sense of self with a large dose of denial.

The GOP doesn't really get the whole minority outreach thing, do they?

New York GOP Hired Anti-Zionist For Jewish Outreach

The New York Republican Party hired an ultra-religious Jewish consultant to boost its image in a state that contains the single biggest Jewish enclave outside of Israel. Unfortunately, that same person may not believe in Israel’s existence.

Yossi Gestetner, a Hasidic political strategist and prominent gadfly in New York media, stepped down Wednesday after being confronted by news station The Jewish Channel over his past work for groups opposed to the Jewish state. Gestetner resigned before the program aired, saying on Twitter he had become “a distraction” for the state party.

Some Hasidic Jews opposed Israel’s formation in 1948 on religious grounds, believing that only the coming of the messiah can end the world Jewish population’s millennia-long diaspora, and continue to treat the country as illegitimate. Last year, Gestetner took a contract with a group called True Torah Jews Against Zionism that declares in its materials that “the Zionist idealogy [sic] is totally contrary to traditional Jewish law and beliefs and the teachings of the Holy Torah.” In The Jewish Channel’s interview, Gestetner said he had no problem with Israel remaining safe, but refused to say whether he considered himself a Zionist.

Rove ‘Makes A Mockery’ Of Law: Super PAC Co-Founder To Attend Romney Strategy Session This Weekend

A Saturday panel on “media insight” will feature American Crossroads and Crossroads GPS co-founder Karl Rove. The Crossroads reportedly plan to spend a stunning $300 million to help Romney defeat President Barack Obama this November, but they are legally prohibited from coordinating this effort with Romney’s campaign.

Back in December, Romney decried the rise of Super PACs like Rove’s American Crossroads, saying they have been a “disaster” for the political system. He said at the time:

Super PACs have to be entirely separate from a campaign and a candidate. I’m not allowed to communicate with a super PAC in any way, shape or form… If we coordinate in any way whatsoever, we go to the big house.

Mary Boyle, vice president for communications at Common Cause, told ThinkProgress that having one of the leaders of an allied Super PAC at at campaign event with major donors “seems to make a mockery of the rule that bans coordination between a super PAC and a candidate.”

Alabama Public Television Apparently Heading Far Right

Last week, the two top executives of the network were summarily fired by the Alabama Educational Television Commission, APT’s governing body, after they resisted an effort by a new commissioner to air DVDs produced by a far-right theocrat who has been roundly condemned by historians. In the days that followed, three members of a foundation set up to raise money for APT also resigned.

The videos were produced by David Barton, an evangelical propagandist who claims falsely that America was founded as a Christian nation and has also become Glenn Beck’s unofficial — and completely untrained — “historian.” The DVDs were suggested by commissioner Rodney Herring, an Opelika-based chiropractor who was appointed to the panel last year and elected its secretary in January.

Pledge week was never the same again.

re: #88 Kragar

More on Gestetner's claims here - along with photos of the incident in question. Seems someone threw a rock at a school bus carrying kids from yeshiva. One of the kids was injured - Gestetner disputes the severity of the injuries sustained (he says they're more severe) and thinks that the crime should be treated as a hate crime. His claims about the incident differ sharply from news reports of same.

And who else will be there?

Karl Rove has been running millions of third party ads against Obama. Romney claims he has no control, knowledge or involvement with his group but he develops a panel with:

1. The Romney Campaign
2. The Founder of American Crossroad
3. Two Employees from the Weekly Standard
4. Three Employees from Fox News
5. One employee from CNN

Wheres Holder? Dicking around with congress.

As to social media, I hate Facebook and their many severe privacy issues, but Twitter is a must. You get breaking news long before traditional media. When Obama announced his Special Speech where he announced the bin Laden raid, I knew via Twitter what happened two hours before other media reported it.

Also, because there is a wide variety of users, each having their own interests, it's like Pages (which I love) on a multinational (and larger user population) scale. Twitter is addictive for this knowledge warrior.

And then two velociraptors came to the baby Jesus in the manger and they did bow to him. Later when Jesus was a man and entered Jerusalem on Palm Sunday he rode upon one of the Velociraptors as if it were a donkey while the other tore the roman soldiers who tried to block his path limb from limb and feasted upon their entrails.
