Joe the Plumber Says Comment About 6M Jews Killed Between 1938 and 1945 in Germany Wasn’t About the Holocaust

Apparent campaign strategy: just keep on digging
Wingnuts • Views: 25,832

In Joe the Faux Plumber’s recent campaign ad, the narrator made the following idiotic statement:

“In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were exterminated. In 1939, Germany established gun control. From 1938 to 1945, 6 million Jews and 7 million others, unable to defend themselves, were exterminated.” Mr. Wurzelbacher, still holding the gun, ends the 40-second video by speaking directly in the camera, saying “I love America.”

Amazingly, Joe’s new PR strategy is to claim that his referencing 6 million Jews being murdered after Germany established gun control had nothing to do with the Holocaust. Here’s his mind-blowingly stupid new quote in the Toledo Blade:

“All I said was gun control was implemented, and then governments proceeded to violate human rights,” Mr. Wurzelbacher said. “Nowhere did I mention the Holocaust or was I even talking about it.”

Here’s the response from Steve Fought, campaign manager for Marcy Kaptur:

“Joe the Plumber needs to go back and watch his own stupid video,” Mr. Fought said. “He sounds like he is a stranger to personal responsibility, but he very clearly talked about what he called genocide in Armenia and the Holocaust.”

Watch the video and judge for yourself:

Not the Holocaust, but that other instance where 6 million Jews were murdered. Right. How can you have 6 million people murdered and it isn't a Holocaust?

And then he says, "I love America", as if there wasn't a holocaust of Native Americans when his type showed up.

It's a technical and geographical distinction. For Rafah there's the regular city and the refugee camp, they are separate entities. Gaza city is the same thing. There's the regular city and at least one (maybe 2-3) refugee camps.

Dick Cheney's daughter, Mary, marries longtime partner Heather Poe

Cheney and his wife, Lynne, confirmed the report that Mary Cheney, the youngest of their two daughters, had married Heather Poe.

“Mary and Heather have been in a committed relationship for many years, and we are delighted that they were able to take advantage of the opportunity to have that relationship recognized,” the Cheneys said in a statement. “Mary and Heather and their children are very important and much loved members of our family and we wish them every happiness.”

Still doesn't answer my question. A camp means a temporary place with temporary structures. The only way to call a town in Gaza a camp (without any temporary structures) is to acknowledge that the people are there temporarily until they move to Israel (not back to Israel).

I'm just surprised that the Jerusalem Post validates that political position.

If you are not a criminal or a crazy fucker you should have no worry (to borrow a saying from the Patriot Act supporters). I had to go look her up on Wikipedia. She describes herself as an atheist with the following:

"I am an atheist. I have been an atheist for fifteen years. ... I believe ... that Judeo-Christian values, religious tolerance, an objective press, the benevolence of Christianity, and civility and decency make for a better American democracy."

First impressions and what not, but she sounds like the atheist version of a Log Cabin Republican. I'm already not impressed. I don't expect it to get any better.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but claiming to be an atheist and placing that much emphasis on religion being crucial to American democracy stinks to high heaven for me.

You want to be a Christian, fine. Just fucking do it. Really sounds like she's "rejecting" religion for the shock value within the conservative community.

Well, I know quite a few Ayn Rand adherents who claim to reject the mysticism of religion but say that the ethics and values of conservative Christianity are still splendid. It's self-denying bullshit, but Rand's bizarre view of women as submissive to men helps to mesh the two things together-- much of conservative Christianity is about the adult male in the household being the lord and master.

These are not the most self-aware people we're talking about here.

Damn it, the NY Senate failed to pass the Freelancer Payment Protection Act. Actually, they failed to bring it to a vote.

This is a bill that I am quite sure would be voted into law if it were brought up, but the Republicans in control of the senate don't want to bring it forward. It is a change to the way that freelancer's can seek redress against non-payment; by putting it under the labor board, rather than in small claims court. It's a system that would be less costly in the end, would pay for itself in reclaimed taxes, etc. It's a good law and it should be passed and it really annoys me that next year I'm going to have to start the lobbying process all over again.

All the Republicans cared about this year was keeping their majority, and they have been not doing a ton.

As under the 1928 law, citizens were required to have a permit to carry a firearm and a separate permit to acquire a firearm. Furthermore, the law restricted ownership of firearms to "...persons whose trustworthiness is not in question and who can show a need for a (gun) permit." Under the new law:

Gun restriction laws applied only to handguns, not to long guns or ammunition. Writes Prof. Bernard Harcourt of the University of Chicago, "The 1938 revisions completely deregulated the acquisition and transfer of rifles and shotguns, as well as ammunition."[4]
The groups of people who were exempt from the acquisition permit requirement expanded. Holders of annual hunting permits, government workers, and NSDAP party members were no longer subject to gun ownership restrictions. Prior to the 1938 law, only officials of the central government, the states, and employees of the German Reichsbahn Railways were exempted.[5]
The age at which persons could own guns was lowered from 20 to 18.[5]
The firearms carry permit was valid for three years instead of one year.[5]
Jews were forbidden from the manufacturing or ownership of firearms and ammunition.[6]

Under both the 1928 and 1938 acts, gun manufacturers and dealers were required to maintain records with information about who purchased guns and the guns' serial numbers. These records were to be delivered to a police authority for inspection at the end of each year.

On November 11, 1938, the Minister of the Interior, Wilhelm Frick, passed Regulations Against Jews' Possession of Weapons. This regulation effectively deprived all Jews of the right to possess firearms or other weapons.[7]

so, except for further depriving jews of civil rights, the 1938 law actually significantly relaxed gun control

huh

perhaps mr wurtzlebacher imagines that the Secret Congress is contemplating gun control on racial lines a la nazi

I have all the classes through normal mode in Diablo 3 and almost finished with Nightmare using my Demon Hunter (Diablo herself is a PITA) so there.

I've not yet played all the way yet. The closest characters I have is a wizard and a monk.

Although the wizard got pwned by Izual the other day.

Does the witch doctor get more interesting farther on? I was hoping it would be as much fun as the necromancer in DII. I didn't find it that way though.

Still don't care for barbarians.

Iowa Radio Host Says Nuns Should Be “Pistol Whipped”; GOP Congressman Laughs

Today on the Iowa conservative radio show “Mickelson in the Morning,” host Jan Mickelson had on Rep. Tom Latham (R-IA) to talk about the Nuns on the Bus tour and the Ryan budget. Objecting to the tour, Mickelson asked Latham whether he had any power to pull over the bus and “pistol whip” the nuns:

MICKELSON: There’s a bus full of nuns headed towards Washington to lobby against the Ryan plan. Do you guys, do you have any power to pull the Nuns on the Bus over and pistol whip them?

LATHAM: It’s always fun to be on your show [Laughs]

I can't think of anyone reasonable still saying "Judeo-Christian". Most decent people acknowledge the "Judeo" as the beard it is for the "Christian" bit. Or that it only refers to a certain subset of socially conservative Jews.

"Judeo-Christian" in the United States is an empty set, given that (a) the number of Jewish people in the US who believe in this so-called heritage probably wouldn't fill even a small synagogue, and (b) there is the not-so-small matter of historical antisemitism in the US, that to some extent continues to this very day.

Yeah. One of the largest facts about Christianity right up until this century was that large portions of it were wildly antisemitic. Now large portions of it are just mildly antisemitic.

Protip: if you're worried about the government trying to concoct reasons to take away your guns, you may want to avoid suggesting that you'd like to crack an old lady over the head with your pistol.

I will not & do not defend Joe The Not plumber. I will admit that race based gun restriction is still gun control, just under a far more questionable rationale. I don't think guns would have saved the day for the German or occcupied Jewish population.

I do think a higher price for the pogroms could have been extracted from the Nazis and SS, and IMHO think that strong young Jews in many places could have resisted effectively ala the French Resistance. Or a more fearsome example is the militant forces of arab spring.

the thing is, by simply calling it "gun control" and not letting his audience in on the secret that in this case "gun control" consisted of denying any weapons at all to an entire group of people, wurtzlebacher conflated the nazi racist version with, say, requiring registration or banning semi automatic assault rifles

it's a form of the "false equivalence" fallacy - added on to post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy

The reasons most Jews didn't resist with violence is because most Jews were trying to weather the storm as Jews have before, with compliance, hiding out, etc. It was a political, cultural choice, it was not because Jews had been disarmed.

Sorry to be late to this party. Certainly "it was a political, cultural choice" is one theory, although it always sounded a bit racist to me.

I subscribe to the "it was a slow change that surprised people". Also known as the "How do you boil a frog" theory.

I present current France as an example of it happening again. French Jews can't seem to see the horrible fate that stands before them. The anti semitism that is growing, slowly growing will boil the ones that can't see it coming.

How so, Buck?

First of all, you can't actually do that to a frog. They can sense the water changing and will jump out. It's a myth.

Second of all, I think you're overestimating the power of people like Le Penn and the other anti-Jewish/anti-Muslim fanatics. First of all, they're concentrating on Muslims right now so they're using Jews as a proxy cover-- taking in only the most gullible, of course. But second, this is, I really think, the apex of their power. It's a troubling apex, but I don't think you'll see the racist right wing in France getting much bigger.

Well, when someone tries to explain an action of a race to "cultural" it approaches racism. This group reacted that way because that is their way. It is part of their culture, it is a choice they made.

I can't tell what the hell you're talking about. Race doesn't exist. Culture does.

Thank you for correcting me on something I never actually said. Even I didn't know I was talking about those groups.

Oh? Who were you talking about? I figured you were talking about the majority of anti-semites in France. Did you want to talk only about the French Muslim anti-semites for some reason, and not the French Christian ones?
