Depressions suck. Thankfully, there is a lot of music out there that can help temporarily.

Thank you for reminding me that I didn’t have a copy of Don’t Dream It’s Over. I’ve remedied the oversight. I remember seeing Crowded House perform it at the WOMAD festival in Chicago in 1993. A thunderstorm was just starting, and the wind was blowing everything around like crazy, and this song was playing. It’s a good memory.
Cap’n Magic, I will always have a soft spot for the movie version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer because it was the only thing that made me smile the entire summer I was 20, when I was in a serious depression of my own. Funny the things that get us through. Glad you’re doing better now.

How are ya dude? Sales good?
Got a sale today that I did not expect till next month. Boosted my commission bracket for a good-sized jump in my pay check.
But like 9 months ago, my success is marred: My sister is ill this evening and had to go to the emergency room. She should be OK, but I’m going to be worried till I know what’s wrong.

Children throwing tantrums:
According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, which tracks healthcare issues, 17 states have made no significant progress towards establishing an exchange or rejected the idea. Most of them voted for Republican candidates during the 2008 elections that brought Obama, a Democrat, to power.
Another 18 states are studying their options, leaving only 15 that have taken concrete steps to establish an exchange, Kaiser said.
Some health experts fear that many of the states holding off now will wait until the November elections in the hope Republicans will win control of the White House or Congress and repeal the law.
Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker announced on Thursday that he intended to do just that and other Republican governors, including Sam Brownback of Kansas, expressed similar views.

Beran is very much in the minority on NRO with that opinion, but that National Review posted it means that NR is still a place where disagreement can be occur without rage being spewed while remaining conservative. Many is the right-of-center site that should take a lesson from that, but few are the sites that will.

I managed to get one mostly trimmed the other day and he was protesting so loudly, I stopped. Tonite, hubby and I together tried to finish the other 3 and it was no use. I’ll have to take him to the groomer.
I just can’t do it.

Also, I’d like a clarification:
“The Governor was referring to his long held position that young illegal immigrants brought here as children who serve in the military should be able to obtain legal permanent residence and that we should staple a green card to the diploma of every eligible student visa holder who graduates from one of our universities with an advanced degree in math, science, or engineering,” Williams said. “He simply misspoke in this interview.”
By “advanced degrees” I assume he means Masters and Ph.D’s, correct? About 8% of the population has those and that’s before you start weeding out all the non-science, math and engineering degrees. These degrees are a real accomplishment, they aren’t handed out in boxes of Cracker Jack and are in serious demand by our job market yet he won’t even allow this route to be available to illegal aliens brought here as children, WTF? No, for them it’s military service or nothing.
Has it occurred to Mitt that there are plenty of well educated illegal aliens brought here as children who are contributing to our society but simply aren’t qualified for military service? So far I see him offering them no path, not even to residency.

I really think he flat out doesn’t want to understand the complexities of the situation. I myself am ineligible to serve in the military due to a heart condition. I would be one of the “fuck you, you’re gone” in Mitt’s eyes. He really is a piece of work when it comes to empathizing with the hopes and dreams of other people who aren’t just like himself.

You gotta love how Romney thinks military service should be the only solution to those people in that situation when he himself tucked tail and went to France after protesting in favor of the draft. He really has no shame. Sorry for getting so angry but man the guy’s arrogance and sheer boldface hypocrisy angers the hell out of me. Mitt isn’t even fit to carry his father’s jockstrap, so to speak; the man is a vacillating worm, saying anything to further his quest for the White House, even if that means throwing his own legacy as MA governor (MassCare) under the bus and attacking the ACA (which is basically MassCare writ large).

Feeling numismatically inclined tonight, I’ve been looking at some pictures of American coins. A few things I’ve noticed:
1) Lady Liberty has practically disappeared off of American coinage from the 40s on. Now all common coins have some dead guy on them.
2) Somewhere in the 20s or 30s, coinage shifted from being naturalistic to something heraldic. Dammit, I want this eagle back, not the sorta fascistic looking one that’s on the modern Quarter.
3) I’m sure some guy at the mint is worried about coins wearing down to illegibility, but I wish there were more high relief coins like Buffalo nickle. The indian looked better once he got good and worn down.
4) I’m not really feeling the new reverse on the Lincoln Cent. It’s.. kind of corny.

I remember reading somewhere recently that the decline in quality of numismatic sculpture had something to do with trying to get longer use out of the coins. I wouldn’t mind seeing the design of the Buffalo nickel brought back. This Indian head coin design would probably wear well, too: [Link: store.nwtmint.com…]

I don’t think coin sculpture and engraving is what it really used to be. Even on dollar bills, there’s a lot of detail (clouds, architecture, patterns) that has been excised from more modern pressings. It’s as if within a century the images of our currency have changed from Greek classicism to a model of Roman efficiency.
re: #132 freetoken
I had a discussion with someone when it came out. We both agreed it was missing some kind of class… I think what helped a lot of the old coins is that people back then were great at coming up with with cool, compelling fonts.

But, she doesn’t like her thighs/butt - pretty common complaint from women. 39 | June 29, 2012 8:13 pmI don’t much approve of throwing the Boers under the bus.
Apartheid was how the Boers ensured their survival. Israel, also, does what it needs to survive, using very similar methods. Otherwise it is “kill the farmer kill the Boer”.
The survival of the civilised peoples in both regions also turns out to ensure the prosperity of those they live amongst. Otherwise, Zimbabwe.
Yes, Israel is an apartheid state. That is *why* she is deserving of our support.

I’ve always done legwork. I love the squats. Probably done less than fifty bench presses in my life. I always thought that bench presses and curls were all for show. If you don’t have the legs, you can’t move crap. Since I wear jeans all the time, nobody knew I had any strength. I have these really skinny arms but I weigh 260 pounds. So when I played on the line in intramural football, everybody else would laugh, but I had leverage those bench pressers couldn’t dream of. Those guys were helpless. Anyway, the point (there was a point when I started, IIRC) was that a woman’s legs are key to her figure. So many women have these skinny legs that just rob their body of any curvature. Time out, Charlie Watts on Jimmy Fallon

Back to the important stuff: Women look good with all kinds of shapes, (the hottest woman in my bio class wasn’t necessarily the sleekest or curviest, but she had the most awesome smile) but as far as I’m concerned, from a purely aesthetic perspective, you can’t have the hips without the legs, and you can’t have curves without the hips, and the shoulders just don’t look right if the woman’s too skinny.

Yes, it truly is a mystery as to why Xhosas and Zulus don’t like Afrikaners very much. It could have something to do with the Afrikaners being in the habit of trying to take the land and cattle of those peoples and then forcing their men to work in white-owned mines. But that was just something that had to be done to allow for the growth of civilization and the natives are just being barbarians if they get mad about it.

I have run across a few of them in my time, and they just sort of assume that i belong to their race, purely on the basis of appearance. Which is foolish, as, according to some of them, I am precisely exactly what’s wrong with the West.
It;s just odd; if race were so important, you’d think they’d be better at detecting it.

Not every Afrikaner did such things, nor did their ancestors.
For that matter, nor did every single “white” approve of the regime in the bad old days of the RSA.
Like everything else that involves real human beings, and not mere political caricatures, the situation there was and is far more complicated.

Example - my great-uncle, a Jewish refugee from Poland, was a Communist.
Now, according to the National Party, he was a ‘coloured,” and, politically, and enemy of the State.
Now, comes ANC rule, and he’s sort of left in the lurch.
Where does he go?

That still doesn’t justify “necklacing”; nothing could justify such a horrible method of killing. The ANC’s cause was just, but they sometimes used vile means to in its pursuit.

I used to live down at the bottom of a winding gravel road on Oak Creek near Sedona, AZ (back before it was overrun by New Agers and land developers) and used to practice driving it without brakes.
Just in case the brakes failed, like Orr from “Catch-22” always crash landing to practice just in case he had to some day…

The Japanese patently refuse to let archaeologists dig in the tombs of their ancient emperors.
Ostensibly out of respect for the dead demi-gods interred there, and partially, it is said out of fear that research would clearly indicate that these guys originally came from Korea…

Knocking On Heavens Door
Andrew Durant was one of Australia’s Most Talented Songwriters and Member of 1970s Adelaide band Stars.
Sadly he died of cancer in May 1980 at age 25.
In a wonderful tribute, Australia’s Best Rock Musicians performed in a concert at Melbourne’s Palais Theatre August 19th 1980.
Andrews death was a terrible shock to the Australian Music Industry.
It generated huge support - raising lots of money for cancer research.
The event brought together Andy’s Stars band mates with guests Jimmy Barnes, Renee Geyer, Ian Moss, Don Walker, Richard Clapton, Broderick Smith and many more.
This still remains one of Australian Rock Music’s Finest Moments and Acclaimed as the most Moving and Spontaneous Australian Concert ever staged.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Here’s a map that shows just what the PPACA law (aka Affordable Care Act/Obamacare/HCR) would mean.
It highlights which states have the lowest and highest rates of insureds. For those states with low percentages of uninsureds, the law will have a minimal effect because you’re already covered (note that MA has one of the lowest rates; TX highest). Those states that have high rates of uninsureds will be able to significantly reduce that figure.

Mali Islamists destroy holy Timbuktu sites
Al Qaeda-linked Mali Islamists armed with Kalashnikovs and pick-axes began destroying prized mausoleums of saints in the UNESCO-listed northern city of Timbuktu on Saturday in front of shocked locals, witnesses said.
The Islamist Ansar Dine group backs strict sharia, Islamic law, and considers the shrines of the local Sufi version of Islam idolatrous. Sufi shrines have also been attacked by hard-line Salafists in Egypt and Libya in the past year.
…
“They have already completely destroyed the mausoleum of Sidi Mahmoud (Ben Amar) and two others. They said they would continue all day and destroy all 16,” local Malian journalist Yeya Tandina said by telephone of the 16 most prized resting grounds of local saints in the town.

WASHINGTON – A strong storm system across the eastern United States caused five fatalities and wiped out power to more than 2 million people.
There were four reported deaths in Virginia, including a 90-year-old woman asleep in bed when a tree slammed into her home, a police spokeswoman said Saturday. Another man was killed by a falling tree while watching the storm from his deck and a woman died after she, too, was hit by a falling tree after she got out of her car to observe a downed tree. Both those deaths occurred in Albermarle County, Va. A fallen tree also killed a man driving in Maryland.
In addition, a park police officer was injured by an uprooted tree in the northern Virginia county, and an 18-year-old man was struck by a power line, Jennings said. He was in stable condition after receiving CPR, she said.
Widespread power outages were reported from Indiana to New Jersey, with the bulk of the service interruptions concentrated on Washington, D.C., and the surrounding areas. Earlier Friday, the nation’s capital reached 104 degrees — topping a record of 101 set in 1934.
More than 20 elderly residents at an apartment home in Indianapolis were displaced when the facility lost power due to a downed tree. Most were bused to a Red Cross facility to spend the night, and others who depend on oxygen assistance were given other accommodations, the fire department said.

U.N. publishes report on Iran arms trade with Syria
(Reuters) - A U.N. Security Council committee has published a report on Iranian sanctions violations, including shipments of weapons to Syria in breach of a U.N. ban on weapons exports by the Islamic Republic.
The Security Council has imposed four rounds of sanctions on Iran for refusing to halt its nuclear enrichment program, which the United States, European Union and their allies suspect is at the heart of a weapons program. Iran rejects the allegation and refuses to halt what it says is a peaceful energy program.
The report appeared on the committee website on Thursday, diplomats told Reuters on Friday. The report, which Reuters reported on last month, said that Syria remains the top destination for Iranian arms shipments.
Iran, like Russia, is one of Syria’s few allies as it presses ahead with a 16-month-old assault on opposition forces determined to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Governor Christie signed off on NJ’s budget last night. I’ll let the first two paragraphs of the article speak for themselves:
TRENTON - Gov. Christie signed a $31.7 billion budget bill Friday for the coming fiscal year, but not before he cut $361 million in Democratic-backed initiatives, including measures that would have provided more money for legal services to the poor, aid for low-income students aiming for college, and a tax credit for low-wage earners.
The Republican governor instead diverted those funds to the state’s surplus, doubling it to $648 million. He wants Democrats to cut taxes and said he would fight them on the issue all summer.
So now we know how he’s going to pay for the income tax cut. On the backs of the poor, working poor, and students.

Compressed air…comes in little cans at pet food stores. Dogs hate it. I bought a can to stop the dogs from barking when they bark too much…just one hiss stops Fozzie in his tracks and he goes outside to wait for me to put the can down. Banjo, if he’s excited, will keep barking and look at me as if to say, “Stop spraying that, it’s annoying and I’m saying hi to mom!”

That is lucky. When I was a kid I had my dog come with me on a bike ride, and the next thing I knew, she was chasing motorcycles. Had to unteach that ASAP. Dogs and bikes can be a treacherous combo. I knew a guy in Portland who was killed when a friendly little ragmop dog ran out to play with him, went in front of him and caused him to crash, and he died of a head injury. Another friend suffered a dislocated shoulder when a big friendly dog tried to greet him as he rode down the street. And I’ve seen some people try to bring their dogs on a bike ride by holding a leash. One tug on the handlebar and that quickly comes to an end.
Some people have great canine biking companions, though.

Have you ever turned your bike around and chased them back? That actually worked for me with one dog who I swore sat there all day waiting for me to ride my bike past. Freaked him right out.
I’ve done that before with other dogs, but to no avail with these two. They back into their own territory until I turn around again. At least they’ve never bitten me.
The really bad dogs will often turn around if you pick up a rock, or even pretend to pick up a rock.

All true. We don’t go to far from the house, for much of what you cite above.
The Soulsucker did have a fascination with motorcycles when he was a pup. Seems to have outgrown it. Didn’t know it was a dog thing.

Chasing Prey seems to be basic dog instinct. The problem is they will chase anything —cars, bikes, leaves, tennis balls.

Not the same stuff I (supposedly) clean my computer with? Is it noisier than the cleaning-type compressed air?

Why Mitt didn’t get his retraction…
Romney vs. The Post on outsourcing
So Romney may not have done anything personally to ship U.S. jobs overseas before he left Bain in 1999, and the offshoring trend did accelerate after he left.
But Bain knowingly and far-sightedly made strategic investments, with Romney at the helm, in these pioneering outsourcing firms in the late 1990s, which grew into some of the largest outsourcing and offshoring companies in the world. And Romney and Bain shared in their profits while he was chief executive and after he left. Whether that’s good or bad depends on your politics.

Day before yesterday I was riding my bike home and the two annoying chihuahuas from across the street started harassing me. I whipped out my pepper spray, which never seems to hurt a dog, but always stops them and makes them walk away. Well, this time, they stopped, sniffed the pepper spray on the ground, and resumed barking and following me. They wanted more! Suddenly I realized; Chihuahuas, of course! Pepper spray is like catnip to them!
I need a new weapon.

I doubt a squirtgun with just water would work. You’d need to add something to it that they don’t like the smell of.
I used to spray my porch with a bleach/water solution after the neighborhood cats started spraying there to “claim” the nearby catnip patch. But I wouldn’t want to actually spray an animal directly with such a mix.
I presume you are trying to avoid escalating this with the neighbors by getting something like local Animal Control involved.

You presume correctly. And the dogs are more of an annoyance than a major concern. Other people walking their dogs have more of a problem than I do, and the incessant barking is worse than the bike chasing. The owners are some of the most dysfunctional people I know. No violence, but some incredible stupidity. I’m hoping somebody else calls animal control before I’m moved to do so.
Mainly I thought it was funny how they reacted to pepper spray.

We see lots of birds here in K.C. Lately this summer, there are bluebirds which have a glint that sparkles in their blue feathers. There are Blue Herons that have a rookery on one side of the highway and fly over the highway in the afternoon to fish at a nearby residential lake.

Sigh. We’ve come so far since the Pennywhistle modem and the Kansas City Standard, but the information age is both a blessing and a curse.
Website offers to delete its information about your arrest — if you pay about $200
As of Thursday afternoon, the website displayed mugshots and personal information for 1,373 people arrested from May 13 through June 10. Many had been caught allegedly driving under the influence, but others had missed court appearances for traffic infractions. Creed, who works alone, said he’s behind on uploading hundreds of additional mugshots.
Creed’s letters, sent to some of the arrestees, said that if they didn’t pay up they would risk having their neighborhood flooded with fliers — complete with mugshots — announcing their arrests. Letters started arriving in mailboxes Saturday.
“We will canvas the neighborhood of someone just released from jail with flyers on every residence, even if they have not gone to trial or been convicted of the crimes brought against them,” the letter said.
Bolding is mine. This will not end well.
