Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Illinois) Says Double Amputee Veteran Not a ‘True Hero’

Ugly right wing rhetoric
Wingnuts • Views: 28,171

This is the moron whose ex-wife is suing him for more than $100,000 in unpaid child support, now attacking a veteran who lost both her legs in Iraq: Rep. Joe Walsh Blasts Double Amputee’s Military Service, Says She’s Not a ‘True Hero’.

Youtube Video

Though he never joined the military himself, Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) disparaged his Democratic opponent’s military service at a town hall on Sunday, saying that she’s not a “true hero.”

Walsh is running against Tammy Duckworth, a double amputee who lost both her legs in Iraq when insurgents hit her helicopter with an RPG in 2004.

The Tea Party freshman opened the Elk Grove town hall by arguing that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) was reluctant to discuss his own military service in 2008, which made him a “noble hero.” By contrast, “Now I’m running against a woman who, my God, that’s all she talks about,” Walsh said.

Just when you think you’ve seen the creepiest, most despicable Republican rhetoric ever, along comes someone like Joe Walsh.

Of course she's not a true hero.

She wasn't bitten by a radioactive insect and she doesn't wear spandex or have technologically advance superweapons.

Oh, what's that you say? Such people are entirely imaginary, and the only heroes we have are real people.

Tammy Duckworth

Following in the footsteps of her father whose long military career spanned service from World War II to the Vietnam War, as well as her father's ancestors who fought in every major American conflict since the Revolutionary War,[12] Duckworth joined the Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (Army ROTC) as a graduate student at George Washington University in 1990. She became a commissioned officer in the United States Army Reserve in 1992 and chose to fly helicopters because it was one of the few combat jobs open to women. As a member of the Army Reserve, she went to flight school and joined the Illinois Army National Guard in 1996.[17]

Duckworth lost the lower part of both legs from injuries sustained[18] on November 12, 2004, when the UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter she was co-piloting was hit by a rocket propelled grenade fired by Iraqi insurgents. The explosion "almost completely destroyed her right arm, breaking it in three places and tearing tissue from the back side of it."[19] This made her the first female double amputee from the Iraq war. [20] Duckworth received a Purple Heart on December 3 and was promoted to Major on December 21 at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where she was presented with an Air Medal and Army Commendation Medal.[18]

Joe Walsh

Before winning elected office, Walsh's raised funds for groups promoting school vouchers to allow children to receive public funds to attend private schools.[19] He also administered a private scholarship fund for low income high school students. In addition, he helped start fiscally conservative political organizations and served as a consultant for a political action committee aimed at electing more Republicans to state legislatures. Walsh is a native of the northwestern suburbs of Chicago, and holds a master's degree in public policy from the University of Chicago.[2]

A while back one of the Cable Channels (discovery?) did a special on the Veterans in Rehab at Walter Reed or Bethesda (morning memory sorry). I think it was a special on the advances in prosthetics and rehab since the last war.

Anyway, Tammy was interviewed. She is a hero and a great American. All the vets interviewed were. Tammy really stood out as a leader. I was not suprised at all when she entered politics. She would be a great representative regardless of the party she choose to work with.

While I don't agree with the way in which he is trying to portray her, I must admit that as a former Helo pilot, I know a lot of pilots who did some pretty incredibly brave things that nobody will ever know about other than the people they saved. I'm not a big fan of people talking about their deeds, but its more of a personal opinion I guess. We all thought of the work as a job we do. We just happen to get shot at while doing it. You'd be suprised how much you get used to it. It's all relative I guess.

It was a CSPAN Special at Walter Reed:

“Remaining a Soldier is her fall-back position,” her husband told a reporter while Duckworth talked and joked with her visitors. “She will try to fly Blackhawks with prostheses after a long recovery period. She will go before a medical review board in six months or a year. Their decision may depend on whether she can pass a physical fitness test.”

“It’s always a privilege to wear the uniform,” said Duckworth who has been assured she can return to her civilian job when she is able, her husband added. She is the manager of Rotary service clubs in the Asian-Pacific area for Rotary International.

Joe Walsh, you ignorant bastard!

This is a photo of a medal my grandfather got from a German Soldier in World War II. It is a priceless family treasure and although I was already in line to receive when my grandfather passed away, he was gracious enough to let me take possession of it while he was still alive.

My grandfather was SO proud of this medal and his military service in general that he was happy to talk to everyone and anyone about it. It defined him as a person. He was a lot of things throughout his life but he NEVER stopped being a sailor or a Patriot.

And he was nothing but kind and respectful to everyone around him, even those whose viewpoints he didn't particularly care for.

If that's not a true hero, I don't know what is.

Joe, you never served, you don't understand and you're a stupid asshole for acting so negatively towards your opponent. Bashing the military won't gain you much sympathy with the public...which is a good thing because the sooner you get kicked out of office, the better.

Depends on how he got it. I assume it was honorably and serves as a momento of the sacrifice he made for his country.

There are two ways he could have obtained it.

1. Looted from a dead or vanquished enemy.
2. Presented willingly to him by a surrendering enemy.

Even if #2, it's still a fricken' nazi medal! No way something like that sould be called a "priceless family heirloom." I'd just call it "Grandpa's wartime souvenir he got from some nazi."

The dad of my best friend growing up was a pilot who had been shot down behind enemy lines in WWII. He got back to safety after some no-doubt wild and heroic actions, bringing with him a German helmet he cut off a dead soldier's head. It hung from their back yard tree with geraniums planted in it.

Always had mixed feelings about that.

Ours was a wooden carving of a little drunk, disheveled dude leaning against a light post, circa about 1900 according to my cousin the antiques guy. The drunks head came off to reveal a bottle opener; the light post top came off to serve as a cork screw. That little dude lived on my dad's beloved bar to the day he died.

Joe Walsh’s disgust for our veterans’ sacrifices knows no bounds. First, he falsely and maliciously claims that Tammy Duckworth, a veteran who lost her legs in Iraq didn’t have much of a record of service. Now, he denigrates that same American hero for talking about how her experience shaped her worldview and strengthened her resolve to serve even more – a conversation that isn’t just legitimate to have, but crucial as America charts its course domestically and internationally. This is a new low for this deadbeat dad. Telling a veteran to shut up on the 4th of July is beyond the pale. We are past the point of calling on Joe Walsh to apologize. He should step aside and and stop embarrassing his district and America.

Ok as was told to me the story behind the medal is as follows:

My grandfather served in the Navy. At some point they had some German POWs aboard ship. At some point, one of them asked my grandfather if he could have some chocolate. My grandfather made a deal with the German that he could have some chocolate if he surrendered the medal. The German agreed and my grandfather, having little love for Germans, proceeded to bring the soldier some extremely bitter bakers chocolate in exchange for the medal.

The medal is special to me because there weren't that many awarded and they were awarded over 80 years ago. Therefore there aren't that many left around. I don't see it as glorifying Nazis, I just see it as a really cool and unique war relic.

Truth be told though, it probably holds strong significance to me not so much because of what it is, but because of the connection it has to my grandfather.

I consider it "priceless" not because I think it has a high monetary value, but because I know if it ever got lost or destroyed it would be irreplaceable.

my grandfather, having little love for Germans, proceeded to bring the soldier some extremely bitter bakers chocolate in exchange for the medal.

In German, semi-sweet chocolate is called "Halbbitter", (half bitter).

I at first thought this was a philosophical thing, but it was explained to me that it was just marketing: cocoa powder was more expensive than sugar, and they wanted to emphasize the fact that it contained more cocoa.

So the guy might have been happy over it...the bitterer, the better.

Celebrate the 4th with a Christian Nation Bible

The American Patriot’s Bible attracted some unflattering attention when it came out in 2009. Ethics Daily reported that some critics charged that it “promotes idolatry and glorifies nationalistic violence.” One of those critics was theologian and pastor Greg Boyd, author of The Myth of a Christian Nation, who called the Patriot's Bible "one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever witnessed coming from a Christian publishing house.” Boyd published an in-depth critique that ended this way:

In the Introduction Dr. Richard Lee promises that, "If you love America and the Scriptures, you will treasure this Bible." I truly love America and deeply love the Scriptures, but for just this reason, I was thoroughly appalled by this Bible.

Also, I bet both would pay their child support, or better yet, stay in the home and take care of the kids hands-on.

John Adams thought we'd celebrate the 2nd of July, because that's the day we declared Independence. The 4th is the day we adopted the Declaration. (It was actually not signed until August, when they were done making the pretty copy for everyone to put their best John Hancock on. Including John Hancock.)

They forgot, on the 2nd, so instead we started celebrating the 4th.

And John Adams would not have insulted a veteran.

Oh, he might have, but that's not what we're talking about. This is insulting the very concept of veteranhood.

Having served does not provide a veteran with some sort of blanket exemption from valid criticism, but this is the least valid criticism imaginable.

Bill O’Reilly Mocks Boehner For Being Vague On Health Care Fixes

“With all due respect to Speaker Boehner, did you see the clip? Did you see the clip?” O’Reilly said, mocking Boehner as though he was choking on his own words. “He can’t do that. He’s got to look into the camera and say this is what we’re going to do, this is why it helps you. He can’t be all ah — eh — ah — ahh.”

Republicans have yet to coalesce behind a replacement plan if they succeed at repealing the Affordable Care Act, which was upheld last Thursday by the Supreme Court.

“No. If the Republicans want to persuade the majority of people, malpractice [reform] isn’t going to do it, and increased insurance competition isn’t going to do it,” O’Reilly said. “They have to look them in the eye and say this is what we’re going to do, and this is how it’s going to help you in your health and in your wallet. They can’t be doing all this other stuff that people can’t connect with.

My father was a combat-wounded veteran of WWII. One of my earlier memories of him is of me rubbing his back with Ben-Gay. There was a little scar on his chest (where the bullet went in) and a BIG scar on his back (where the field medic dug the bullet out with a bayonet). In between was nothing but scar tissue and adhesions; he was left with one lung and permanent nerve damage. I grew up knowing that this is what war could do to a person. Spending my entire career working at a VA hospital in the Prosthetics service reinforced this knowledge.

I am very glad Mr. Walsh is nowhere I can get to him. Orange is not my color.

NYPD Posts ‘Wanted’ Flyer Targeting Couple That Legally Videotapes Stop-And-Frisks

The New York Police Department has put out a “police advisory” flyer warning cops and residents to look out for two “professional agitators,” a Harlem couple who film officers stopping and frisking young New Yorkers of color.

DNAinfo reports that Matthew Swaye, 35, and his partner Christina Gonzalez, 25, came across the poster, complete with mugshots and the official seal of the NYPD’s intelligence division, taped to a podium in the 30th precinct’s public hearing room while attending a precinct council meeting. The flyer listed the home address of the couple and warned:

Be aware that the subjects are known professional agitators that live at [home address]. Above subjects mo is that they video tape officers performing routine stops and post on youtube. Subjects purpose is to portray officers in a negative way and too deter officers from conducting there responsibilities. Above subjects also deter officers from being safe and tactical by causing unnecessary distractions. Do not feed into subjects propaganda.

Also of interest is that the lizard acting out the female role on bottom will produce bigger eggs than the one acting out the male role. Who gets to be on top or bottom is alternated from mating season to mating season, with those who acted out the male part one season, switching to act out the female part the next, and vice-verse.

Fascinating.

Right Wing Blogosphere Revolts Against Romney Over Mandate

In National Review, Michael Walsh writes a post entitled “Spineless Jellyfish Terrorize Great Nation!”

Nothing like getting Election 2012 off-message from the start, and running up the white flag before the fight has even begun. Shades of the McCain campaign — first, starring in the Steve Schmidt role is Mr. Etch-a-Sketch himself, the ineffable Eric Fehrnstrom.

Breitbart heir Joel Pollak threatens the campaign with an out-and-out revolt:

The Tea Party has been ready to rally to Romney’s side over the Obamacare decision, overlooking his past in order to use him as the vehicle for repealing Obamacare and toppling Obama. But if Romney won’t fight for conservative principles, the Tea Party is going to start looking elsewhere–fast. No one wants to live through the frustration of October 2008 all over again. No one wants to watch another conservative capitulate to Obama.

This ain’t Etch-A-Sketch, Mitt. Go hard or go home.

Scott Johnson nods:

What can we learn from this? I offer a multiple choice question

(a) Romney is not the ideal candidate to don the mantle of opposition to Obamacare.

(b) Romney’s political instincts are lacking on a key campaign issue.

(c) Romney’s campaign requires an overhaul.

(d) Romney isn’t much of a Power Line reader.

(e) All of the above.

San Francisco, actually. Twenty four years in harness. I used to joke, 'this is an unusual government job. Instead of making life difficult for people, we get to pay them back for having made life difficult for them in the past."
One of my favorite memories? Talking to a veteran who needed some device, who asked 'will I have to pay for this?' I told him, 'sir, you were in your country's service when you were injured. As far as we're concerned, you've ALREADY paid for this - and anything else you might need in the future.'

Giving disabled veterans the help they needed to maintain their lives and dignity - no wonder I stayed there so long.
