If the Tea Party does not come out to support Mitt in big numbers, he doesn't stand a chance. Some of them may decide to sit out 2012 and regroup for 2016 when they can nominate a real conservative.
In the last election in France, Sarkozy tried to warm up to the far right group Le Pen for their support, but when it came down to actually voting, Le Pen withdrew their support for Sarkozy because he was too much of a centrist and they left him swinging in the breeze.

Charles doesn't like Romney because he is a boring, out of touch rich guy with no morals or integrity that constantly changes his message depending on who he's speaking to and refuses to take responsibility for his actions or stand firm on his positions. Also, he was kind of a douche in school.
Joel Pollak doesn't like Romney because he isn't a raging wingnut theocrat (though he tries to play one on TV) and a "Washington outsider" who is uber concerned about Muslims, Agenda 21 and OMG SOCIALISM!

Tampa, from Wiki:
The word "Tampa" may mean "sticks of fire" in the language of the Calusa, a Native American tribe that once lived south of today’s Tampa Bay. This might be a reference to the many lightning strikes that the area receives during the summer months. Other historians claim the name means "the place to gather sticks".
Tampa meaning "the place to gather sticks" is certainly an appropriate meaning, because what better place to gather sticks than at a convention where a good percentage of the attendees will indeed have a stick up their ass.

I agree that it's a messed-up thought, but unfortunately racism is what drives many on the right wing these days. Beyond racism, there's the simple hatred of Barack Obama, for no particular reason that anyone can remember, except it's been blaring from Fox News 24 / 7. Millions of people are getting ready to vote for a rich guy, who pioneered hostile corporate takeovers and outsourcing, who introduced Obamacare at the state level, who was Governor of Massachusetts when it legalized same-sex marriage, who has been active his whole life in a religion that isn't exactly "mainstream" to many Republicans, and who isn't even well-liked. FOR NO PARTICULAR REASON, except they've been told that Obama = Satan.
As the saying goes, "be careful what you wish for". If Romney wins, many people will have quite a case of buyer's remorse.

The vacillating North Carolina legislature decided to bury their heads in the sand, hoping in 4 years to do something or other:
New law bans policies on sea-level change for 4 years
After a wide-ranging debate on the validity of climate-change science Tuesday, state lawmakers agreed to ban any state agencies from making policies on sea level change until 2016.
The House approved the bill in a 68-46 partisan vote. With the Senate’s approval Monday, it now moves to Gov. Bev Perdue.
The measure is a watered-down version of the original legislation to put strict limits on the state’s use of climate change data, which drew international attention and made the state a punch line on a late-night comedy show.

Repost about the Polonium/Arafat thing because I think this is important.
I am going to call for strong skepticism on this story.
The reason is that the poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko in 2006 was done with Polonium 210.
Polonium 210 has a half life of 184 days. I doubt very sincerely there would be enough of that left to get a good sample on by any laboratory eight years later.
Further, if enough of it was on his clothes and in his urine and sweat to be discovered eight years later, like the report claims, others around him would have gotten ill from contacting his clothing or shaking his hand. That did not happen.
The whole point of using Polonium to take people out is that it decays so rapidly and takes so little to kill someone that it is very hard to trace.
I am going to call bullshit.

Yeah... pretty much. IF he had more than a few micrograms on him he would have lit up Geiger counters like Christmas trees, and if he had less, there are a good 18 half decays between now and then. And a few micrograms divided by 262,000 is a very difficult to believe sufficient sample.

Lead-206 (the final decay product) isn't a very typical isotope, as far as I know. I have little doubt that, with a sufficiently high-grade lab, that such could be detected if Arafat had been so poisoned. Where the chain of plausibility breaks down, IMHO, is subjecting his remains to such careful labwork in the first place. Why bother? He's not the Higgs Boson ferchrissakes.

Not to mention that it is highly poisonous, the LD50 for Polonium is something like 1 microgram, and thus it only takes a tiny, tiny amount to do the job.

Gunfire blamed for more wildfires; target shooting limited
Here's news that may start a firestorm: Officials say gunfire has ignited some wildfires in the bone-dry West, and some states are limiting outdoor shooting to reduce fire risk.
Target shooting or other firearms have started at least 21 wildfires in Utah and nearly a dozen in Idaho, the Associated Press says. Gunfire has also been cited for causing wildfires in Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and Washington.
But as officials seek to limit outdoor shooting or ammunition, they are running up against a formidable force: the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.
Utah Gov. Gary Herbert, a Republican, is taking heat for authorizing restrictions on target shooting on state and county land after it was determined that gunfire started one blaze. Officials were deciding today how to impose the politically charged ban in some areas because of the fire risk, the Salt Lake Tribune says. A decision is expected soon.
"This does not abridge anybody's constitutional right to bear firearms," Herbert said. "But we're facing a serious fire season, and the state forester has the authority to limit [shooting] in unincorporated areas."

I agree. Right up there with "new info on the JFK assassination"
Yeah. Google arafat conspiracy and you can see it's constantly evolving.

I wish I could post her whole album. It's stunning. She's quite a photographer.

Not to mention that it is highly poisonous, the LD50 for Polonium is something like 1 microgram, and thus it only takes a tiny, tiny amount to do the job.
Exactly... 1/262,000 of a microgram is very trace.

Are you trying to tell us our orbit isn't round? And that the farther away we are from the sun the warmer we get?
We better get everybody to lean left so we can save our orbit.

A little adventure planned for tonight
Lightning photo/video chase. But the forecast says the fun starts at 11:00 pm. Got the truck rigged for internet and doing all the work from inside the truck. Out between Tucson and Nogales

And then there is the other issue that if Suha had the clothing all this time, polonium could have been introduced at any time after his death. This is a family that had billions of aid dollars in their own Swiss Bank accounts. They are not honest people to say the least.
My gut feeling is that it is a pure propaganda stunt with a high non-zero chance of the Arafat hangers on trying to make a desperate bid for relevance.

So if his clothing was "drenched" in polonium in 2004 what happened with others who came in contact with him? What about his wife? It was in his toothbrush? Something stinks with this latest conspiracy.

Worth a quick read.
The Palestinians, Arafat, and Al-Jazeera
Today the Arabic news channel Al-Jazeera broadcast a program about the death of the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. The program claimed that in- depth investigation reveals high levels of radioactive polonium were found in Arafat’s body after his death.
Arafat was a leader and a father for his people who fought hard for the rights of the Palestinians. Many would be interested to know “the truth” about his death.
But let’s put things in perspective...

Right. According to Al Jazeera this polonium was all over the place -- so to speak. I'd be interested in hearing directly from this lab and Francois Bochud.
119 | Mad Prophet Ludwig Tue, Jul 3, 2012 6:17:55pm |
Correction:
The half life of Polonium 210 is 138.4 days. Damn dyslexia!
That means there were 21 half decays and not 18 from then until now like I first calculated.
2 ^ 21 = 2,097,152 which is what you would have to divide by to get how much would be left.
The lethal and clandestine kill dosage is a few micrograms - and even if you have the patient right there, it is hard to detect with a few mics to work with.
1/2,000,000 of a microgram is getting down to countable numbers of atoms.
I call utter BS on this report.

re: #119 LudwigVanQuixote
And you could be right. A major consideration is whether there was anything like a "chain of custody," or if this evidence could have been tampered with before the Swiss lab processed it.

I'm having trouble understanding one key thing about the new Republican "it's a tax" strategy to take away people's health insurance and make Obama a one-term president. Exactly why am I supposed to care whether the mandate penalty for not having insurance is called a penalty or a tax?
Roberts didn't change anything about the mandate penalty by saying it was constitutional because of the taxing authority rather than the commerce clause.
The new GOP talking point is even sillier because the mandate penalty is a sum that no one even has to pay. All they have to do be to assume personal responsibility and have insurance when 2014 comes along, with subsidy help if the cost is a problem. Even more ridiculously, the ones trying to milk this "it's a tax" foolishness seem to be people who have insurance and have no fee to complain about.
Apparently there are some other taxes that have been in the law for a long time, but which the GOP has suddenly discovered now that they are whining about taxes instead of pretending it's all being charged to the deficit. I looked at the list on Fox, and despite the Fox spin they did not seem anything terrible.
