Independence Day

America’s birthday
Lifestyle • Views: 46,511

Today we commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, and fire up the barbecue grills for picnics across the nation, as right wing bloggers try to outdo each other for the most jingoistic exhibition of holier-than-thou patriotism they can muster up.

Happy Independence Day to all LGF readers!

Time to go out and take a stroll along the Ben Franklin Parkway before it becomes too crowded.

And I'll have to ask the Brazilian coworkers and contractors tomorrow if they had fun watching the fireworks.

The parade was great. We had Smokey Bear and a US Senator! The Senator, a Democrat, was handing out candy. SOSHALIZZM! But so were all the Republicans. There was a seven year old wearing a Romney mask in the Republican entry, he was hysterical.

There was a six or seven year old girl singing Michael Jackson songs, she was good! The entry was her folks' DJ business. She wasn't lip synching either, you could tell when Papa distracted her and she started mumbling.

Off to the Ice Cream Social. It's overcast, and it rained most of the night, so there won't be so much sitting on the grass, but plenty of milling around 'til it starts raining again.

No, too satirical. Even though Parker and Stone love their country sincerely, its just not a good fit. But its a great bit of parody, and a warning line: If you're getting so amped up at America's police or military kicking the bad guys' asses that this song starts going through your head, you need to calm down.

Now there is a video game, “The Stressful Life of Salman Rushdie and Implementation of his Verdict,” announced in Tehran at Iran’s second annual International Computer Games Expo, which will allow gamers to carry out the Ayatollah’s death sentence against Mr. Rushdie
...
"We used to have only two weak [Iranian-made] games, but after the issue of computer games came on the agenda of the Council at the order of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution [Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei] we developed around 140 games with Islamic and Iranian contents which can compete with foreign products," Mokhber Dezfouli, secretary of the Supreme Council of Cultural Revolution, told the Fars News Agency.

Kinda funny, kinda creepy...
Bishop's July 4 call: God grants freedom, not government

The U.S Conference of Catholic Bishops launched a national push to assert that government (i.e. the Obama administration) should not decide who is religious enough to be exempt from government mandates.

They called the campaign a Fortnight For Freedom, with special Masses and rallies in most of the nation's 195 dioceses. Started on the feast day of martyrs who died for defying their king on religious principles, the Fortnight concluded today with Chaput's a call to spiritual arms.
...
His core message was that people don't belong to their government, they belong to God, and only when they live by God's plan are they truly free. Hence they are obligated, like the martyrs of the Church, to defy government acts that the Church calls unGodly.

Of course they have to remind us that god's will is not democratic and only voiced through the Vatican.

Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz, bishop of Lincoln, Neb., countered, telling NPR that core doctrines

... are not open to votes. These are what God has revealed, and the custody of that revelation is, of course, in the possession of the church.

So Americans Bishops are telling American "patriots" that they must obey and old Polish man, who was not democratically elected and lives in a European castle.

...

He is GERMAN. And yes, you MUST obey!

But their message is not far from that of the Dominionists: that (their interpretation of) God's Divine Law takes precedence over human laws.

Which was the very thing that the enlightened thinkers among our Founding Fathers were painfully aware of: we will all have our own version of God's Divine Laws, even if we agree on the scriptures to base it on.

That is why they set up our Constitution to allow people to come up with a viable compromise.

But moral and idological absolutions have no room for compromise.

Hometown 4th of July parade! Woot Woot!

Veterans, Firemen, cub scouts, more veterans, more cub scouts, candidates, advocacy groups (childhood diseases, mostly), high school marching band, Elmo, really loud mega churches, local companies, gymnasts, more cub scouts, guy in a cyclops bowling pin costume (why would a bowling pin only have one eye?), the Rose Festival Queen, the princesses from the local assisted living center, DAR in costume, classic cars, Down's Syndrome boy throwing candy from the back of a convertible, girl scouts, Mexicans on horses (in costume), 4-H girls on horses, way too many tractors (throwing frisbees), dance studios.

No Dairy Princesses this year. Lots and lots, and lots of candy. Kids bring backpacks to our parade.

However, since this is Portland, it was cold. Sunny, but I had to move out of the shade because I was shivering.

CNN's original title "The test results do not mean Yasser Arafat was poisoned, the scientist says" was changed to: Arafat's widow wants body exhumed after test for radioactivity

The results do not mean that Arafat suffered radiation poisoning, François Bochud told CNN.

Some details in Arafat's medical records are not consistent with polonium poisoning, he explained.

"We have evidence there is too much polonium, but we also have hints from the medical records that this may not be the case. The only way to resolve this anomaly would be by testing the body," said Bochud, director of the Institut de Radiophysique in Lausanne, Switzerland.
,,,
Bochud's research team tested Arafat's toothbrush, clothing and keffiyeh, the trademark black-and-white scarf he always wore, Bochud said.
...
A stain from body fluid included 180 megabecquerels of the substance per liter, while a typical sample would contain 5 megabecquerels, Bochud said. The fabric of his clothing itself, without body fluid, contained less than 10 megabecquerels, Bochud said. (A becquerel is a measurement of radioactive intensity by weight.)

Several tests involving biological samples -- such as urine, sweat or blood -- contained higher levels than other samples in the same bag, he said.
...
When asked whether some polonium-210 could have been applied to the items since Arafat's death, Bochud responded that "anything is possible."

Bochud also said the Institut de Radiophysique did not verify that the clothing was Arafat's. Another organization said the DNA on the items matched that of Arafat's daughter, Bochud said
...
Arafat's condition at the time he died was not entirely consistent with polonium poisoning, Bochud said.

"For example, the bone marrow stayed in good shape until (the) death of Arafat. In other cases of polonium poisoning there is a decaying of the bone marrow," the medical expert said. "Another point, he did not lose his hair as would be expected in the case of polonium (poisoning)."

I was just doing a post on that article. Looks like Al Jazeera did it again - left out some important details and made it sound a lot more conclusive than it was.

However, note that the director of the lab does say it would be possible to detect polonium, and they did detect elevated levels, so it's not settled. But it looks a lot less likely with the new info.

Fellow Citizens, I am not wanting in respect for the fathers of this republic. The signers of the Declaration of Independence were brave men. They were great men, too great enough to give frame to a great age. It does not often happen to a nation to raise, at one time, such a number of truly great men. The point from which I am compelled to view them is not, certainly, the most favorable; and yet I cannot contemplate their great deeds with less than admiration. They were statesmen, patriots and heroes, and for the good they did, and the principles they contended for, I will unite with you to honor their memory....

Bochud also said the Institut de Radiophysique did not verify that the clothing was Arafat's. Another organization said the DNA on the items matched that of Arafat's daughter, Bochud said.

Zahwa Arafat provided DNA, Suha Arafat told CNN. The long wait for test results, which lasted months, "was emotionally difficult," she said.
