Went to the Field Museum today and saw the Genghis Khan exhibit. Good stuff but a bit too much on the cultural history. Unlike other special exhibits, I must say I feel this one has a major flaw: It does not effective mention the Mongol propensity for destroying entire cities for even brief resistance. I realize that such a depiction might have rendered the exhibit unfit for children, but the brutality of the Mongols is an important part of how Genghis Khan is remembered and it is not adequately mentioned in the exhibit, IMO. It is still a good exhibit, though.

I'm back from playing golf at the University..I am so pissed off..I hit a wall.
This is how bad it is..This last week I read a Book by Ben Hogan from 1957 on the golf grip.. Yes, I'm desperate.. The book didn't work you know why?
A proper professional grip balances the power of your left hand which is weaker to the strength of your right hand. Seems logical and correct...
I can't find a good grip that works for me. I am a lefty that plays right handed. I have for years..It feels more comfortable yet I lose control on drivers and long Irons.. It pisses me off, But I keep my buddies laughing about it...
Today I yelled out the line from Tin Cup..

It's. Just. Golf.

It's supposed to be fun.

My wife never hits a ball farther than 50 yards. She never loses golf balls. She has fun. She goes home feeling good.

I hit 200+ yards. I lose 4 or 5 golf balls every 18 holes. I go home annoyed.

It actually feels a good bit cooler today compared to yesterday. Much of that, especially along the lakeshore, is due to the wind. Unlike the relatively still days earlier this week, the wind have been fairly brisk today and it helps reduce the perceived heat.

Your grip may not necessarily be the problem. That being said, one thing I found that managed to fix my grip and straighten out my long game was buying a training club. It's a golf club with hinges that will "break" if you do it wrong. I was able to determine that by modifying my grip slightly, I could swing smoothly without breaking the club, and the last time I was on the driving range, it brought my ridiculously wicked slice back under control.

That's everybody's weak spot, too much thinking about the swing. Golf is a game of instinct. You should be thinking of where you want to place the ball, not on micro-managing the path the club head takes.

So you're planning a redesign.

In that case, I have a suggestion. Why don't you summarize beforehand the major changes you are planning and we can have some input on them? That way you don't have to worry about going to the trouble of coding something we don't really want or think will be useful.

You also might get helpful suggestions for stuff that would be great but that you never thought of yourself.

The swing has to be internalized.

Of the four male siblings with the same mother and father, two of us internalized the swing and two didn't. The two who did broke 85 regularly. The two who didn't rarely broke 100.

Say what you will of the two of them, neither one would accept the idea that the 1st Amendment can be read to accept prohibitions on or discrimination against Islam. My idea was to contrast the firmly accepted understanding of the 1st Amendment by the legal community (including by conservatives who might argue with more liberal jurists about many other things), with the insane Geller/Fischer idea that Islam is not so protected.

A Breivik fan:

Norwegian Men’s Rights Activist blogger Eivind Berge arrested for death threats against police

Berge, as readers of this blog may well already know, is a fan of right-wing terrorist and mass murderer Anders Brevik. On his blog, he’s also argued (among other things) that “Rape is Equality.”

In recent months he’s apparently glorified the murder of police on his blog numerous times.

Well, it's not really at the point where I'm ready to do that yet, but there will be plenty of opportunities for people to give input and suggestions when it gets there.

The major priorities right now:

1. Responsive design, to make LGF work well across all types of browsers and mobile devices.

2. Front page redesign, to simplify the interface and make more of the content easily available.

This. Those two things alone are a massive amount of work. Those who've never had to build a complex website from the ground up have no idea what challenging, time consuming undertakings those two tasks can be when done correctly.

It is worth noting that unlike current times, when NATO/EU deployments see British troops doing far more of the fighting than French troops, the British Army did not do well during the Crimean War, its soldiers brave as ever but the victims of poor leaders more interested in spectacle than strategy and even poorer supply services. The French Army did a good bit better in the Crimean War and was responsible for the critical redoubt seizures during the final attack on Sevastopol. The Royal Navy, by contrast, did do sterling service in that war, but it had better leaders and a much better attitude than the British Army.

A progressive voice for tribal women silenced in targeted attack

Farida, belonging to the Afridi subtribe Kokikhel, was targeted on Wednesday morning at 6.30am when she left her house in Tehsil Jamrud Ghundi Kali for her office in Hayatabad.

“She was cornered by motorcyclists who shot her and she died on the way to Jamrud hospital,” said witness Abid Ali. Farida was 25.

Along with her sister Noor Zia, Farida was committed to social change and economic emancipation for women from the platform of a welfare organisation called the Society for Appraisal and Women Empowerment in Rural Areas (SAWERA). Both women were among the founding members of the NGO and had a Masters degree in Gender Studies.

So far so Drudge. But, to my delight, this is immediately followed by the Obama camp response:

(Obama press secretary Ben LaBolt emails: “Your GOP operative should have had the courtesy to stay sober before noon, and BuzzFeed should go back to labeling cat slideshows.”)

I hope this perfectly sensible and hilarious reply catches on and the Democrats eventually start responding to all this stupid shit with an animated gif of Joe Biden giving the jerk-off salute.

Mississippi’s voter identification law might prove literally impossible for some of its residents to adhere to. In the state, a measure written by State Senator Joey Fillingane (R) and approved by a ballot initiative requires voters to have photograph identification, which they can only obtain if they’ve got a birth certificate to present. But they can only get a birth certificate using photo ID. I favor Voter ID laws, but it must be possible for those entitled to vote to actually get the free IDs in question. If not, then the law will have to be scrapped.

"Possible" is not good enough. It must already be in hand. Since that is often not the case, voter ID laws amount to voter suppression. Simple as that.

Wonderful! Would it link to the standalone version of the comment, or in-context of the thread, like this? (one quibble I always had with the Ctrl-Y tweet method for comments; it would link to the original thread, not the comment, so might not have made sense to people who followed the link)

I don't agree. What is needed is for the person to have had adequate time and notice to get the ID. If someone is told 14 months before the election "You need to get an ID to vote in November 2012's election." and then repeatedly reminded to get the ID, then if they do not get it they have only themselves to blame. But they must be able to get the ID without undue hardship, and in the case of the Mississippi law that is not the case.

But what if you need picture id to get picture id? See GDFranks post above.

It's suppression. No reason for the fear. Except for lack of GOP votes.

Having to already have a photo ID in order to get a photo ID constitutes "undue hardship", in that it is impossible.

Does needing to drive 115 miles when one does not own a car constitute undue hardship? Should I blame my friend for not having ID, when she would dearly like to have it, but hasn't been able to make the trip? Why do you want to subject random people whose circumstances you don't know to any potential inability to vote, when voter fraud is not any kind of actual problem? Wouldn't it make more sense to focus on inefficient county clerk offices that make many more errors than individual voters do?

Clarification: should my friend blame herself?

Here's the deal. There's almost zero fraud at the voter end, therefore the photo ID policy is really a pedantic attempt to present a solution in search of a problem, argued in formalistic terms. The real, obvious reason for it is voter suppression. The fact that the people pushing for it also publicly lament letting 18 year olds and women vote should be a clue that the goal is to have a smaller electorate by targeting groups that traditionally vote for the pushers' opposition.
