Shocka! #Breitbart.com Defends Hate Group Leader Pamela Geller

Haters supporting haters
Wingnuts • Views: 48,851

Would someone please let breitbart.com writer Laura Rubenfeld know that Pamela Geller has no “constitutional right” to demand that the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles give her a venue to spread hate speech?

Proving, once again, that those who scream loudest about constitutional rights are often those who know the least about them: Los Angeles Jewish Federation Enforces Shariah Law.

On the morning of June 24th, author, blogger, speaker, executive director, and co-founder with Robert Spencer of Stop the Islamization of America (SIOA), Pamela Geller was denied her First Amendment Constitutional right of freedom of speech by The Jewish Federation of Los Angeles – just hours before she was scheduled to speak at an event organized by the Zionist Organization of America – West (ZOA).

And by the way, an antisemitic white supremacist (or incredible facsimile thereof) is trolling the wingnuts in their comments. For some reason, this kind of person is attracted to articles about Pamela Geller.

Pam does have a Constitutional right to make her demands, just as the Jewish Federation of Los Angeles has the Constitutional right to tell Pam to fuck right off.

Rubenfeld forgot all about Geller's Constitutional right to rent her own stage and promote her own show.

To Pam Geller the Constitution means whatever she wants it to mean. She is its Noble Defender and must be able to bend it as needed if she is to defend it from the Ravening Wolves of Sharia.

In reality, of course, she is just a hateful person with an oversized ego.

You have the right to speak, but you do not have the right to force others to listen to you.*

*as usual, freedom of speech does not extend to children who are talking to their parents, who, yes, actually can make said child listen to them.

Pamela Geller was denied her First Amendment Constitutional right of freedom of speech by The Jewish Federation of Los Angeles

There is no "Constitutional Right" to be provided with a venue.

re: #6 jaunte

Rubenfeld forgot all about Geller's Constitutional right to rent her own stage and promote her own show.

And according to Breitbart, if Pam didn't allow me to get up on her stage and say whatever I wanted, she would be violating my Constitutional rights.

Not minor mistakes either.

I remember a great deal more about it, but I also remember that its premise turned out to be hooey. The Soviet Union could never have amassed as large a field army as the one the movie has it massing, nor could they have supplied such an army for a long campaign in a far-away land. They didn't have the money nor the logistical base. Nor could they have kept their reserve forces in the field for a full year, because calling those reserves up would have caused too much of the Soviet economy to shut down.

Like Blue Thunder, which I mentioned on the previous thread, Red Dawn is a fun movie, but should not be taken seriously.

The standard disclaimer about how "the views expressed do not necessarily reflect the views of so and so" only give the sponsor so much leeway.

They had to dump Shreiking Harpy if they wanted to maintain even a shred of dignity. Any endorsement of Pam's brand of wingnuttery forever relegates an organization into the lower class tier.

On the surface, I once bought a forest. The parasites claimed that the land belonged to God, and demanded that I establish a public park there. Why? So the rabble could stand slack-jawed under the canopy and pretend that it was paradise *earned*. When Congress moved to nationalize my forest, I burnt it to the ground. God did not plant the seeds of this Arcadia - I did.

Love Will Smith (MiB3 looks really interesting, but I just haven't had time to see it in the theater), but Shyamalan's put out some real bombs out the past few years. IMO, aside from The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and maybe Signs, it seems like the movies he's done since have stunk on ice.

I was in a packed theater a few years ago, and this trailer for a horror movie came on the screen. It was about a bunch of people stuck in an elevator, and apparently one of them is a demon, or an alien, or the devil, or something, and starts killing off the people one by one. Everyone in the audience was looking around thinking "Man, this really looks like shit."

Then near the end of the trailer, the words came on the screen and out of the mouth of the announcer: "From the mind of M. Night Shyamalan." The entire theater burst into laughter, harder than just about any comedy movie I've ever seen. That was one of the best movie experiences I've ever had.

One pundit see's no problem:

What Happened to Romney’s “Evangelical Problem”?

For six years, reporters and commentators have told the American public that evangelicals don’t want to vote for Mitt Romney because he is a Mormon. But now that Romney has become the presumptive Republican nominee, that narrative has evaporated, replaced by a new one: evangelicals will embrace Romney after all. Politics appear to trump theology. Evangelicals may not think Romney’s a Christian, but at least he’s not Obama.

This new media narrative rests on a widespread misunderstanding. Romney’s Mormonism was always a problem for evangelical voters. But it was not his biggest evangelical problem—certainly not in 2012, and possibly not even during the 2008 primaries. Although he stumbled seriously coming out of the gate, Romney effectively learned to manage evangelicals’ religious misgivings about his candidacy starting as early as his December 2007 speech, “Faith in America.” That speech marked an important turning point in Romney’s relationship with evangelical voters. Afterwards, Romney’s most pressing evangelical problem was not his religion. Instead, it was his struggle to convince evangelicals he was a reliable social conservative.

Keller launched a sister website in mid-May, [Link: www.votingforjesus.com,...] that encourages people to sign up and commit to write in the name of Jesus for President this November, and expects to see over 1 million signed up by the time of the election. In an exclusive interview with the Christian Post, he said, "A Christian is faced with a difficult dilemma this November. It is literally Satan flipping a two-headed coin with his head on both sides. How can a Christian in good conscience vote for President Obama, [...]"

Keller continues, "On the other hand, how can a Christian in good conscience vote for Mitt Romney, a 5th generation member and priest of the Satanic Mormon cult. His Presidency would give his cult the mainstream acceptance they have always wanted since being founded 200 years ago by a documented con-artist, racist, pedophile, polygamist, and murderer named Joseph Smith. Conservative estimates are that Romney's cult will add at least 1 million converts in the US alone. For a Christian, that means 1 million souls who will buy into a false Gospel and burn in hell for all eternity!"

Keller goes on, "The reason Romney won't discuss his 'faith' is because he knows if people really understood the beliefs those in his cult hold, they would never vote for him. His cult refuses to talk about their secret temple rituals saying they are holy, when in fact it is well known by ex-Mormons that in those rituals they are literally worshipping Satan! Whenever Romney is pressed on his beliefs, he lies like he did in his big 'Faith Speech' in 2008 that he is a Christian and believes in God and Jesus, when in fact the beliefs of his cult are 100% inconsistent with Biblical Christianity and the God and Jesus he believes in are NOT the God and Jesus of the Bible!"

As the time machine controls are still set to the 1950's, and since I believe more of the young people today need some perspective about the American political past, here are some original recordings about those golden 1950's for which so many of our fellow Americans pine.

First, President Truman interrupting a boxing match to discuss his Korean policy, followed by a reporter summarizing the reactions to Truman's run-in with MacArthur:

MacArthur, though he left his post obediently as ordered, fought back in the political arena. Here is his keynote address at the 1952 GOP convention, sounding downright war-mongering:

Note that MacArthur freely mixes in references to religion as being central to American life, and of the need for "victory" militarily. Also note how he paints (without naming) FDR and Truman and being "radicals" and "reactionaries" and warning of socialism, communism etc., implying that the Democrats were such.

Point is this: While it is true that the old South with its racism was a problem for the Democratic party (a problem with which Truman had to deal), even back in the 1950's the GOP was strongly influenced by the God-n-Guns crowd. It is not new to the the 2012 GOP. Yes, Nixon and then Reagan did bring in the racism of the Old South political structures, but the belief that America was a Christian nation waging war for God around the world against he evils of socialism is very much a GOP position for a long time.

re: #168 freetoken

I listened to MacArthur's remarks (almost 20 mins before the download crapped out) and overall, I'd agree with your sentiments for the most part.

Still, context is in order.

MacArthur was a true war here. Europe was still rebuilding and the war- on a much greater scale than 9/11- left an indelible mark on America and in many ways that has changed us forever.

It is also true the cold war was real and Soviet intentions were a source of great fear. John Kennedy was ready to go to war over Cuba.

Now it would be easy to go on and aon, but in fact, you are also right. MacArthur exploited that fear for self promotion and to retaliate against a political class he thought used him (never mind Truman was right to put this quasi megalomaniac out to pasture. The guy had a cult following. Truman understood military men with cult followings are a danger to teh republic).

He used all the right words and all the right phrases to present himself as a patriot, warrior and defender of the Republic (he was as much a hero to the Dems as he was to the GOP). What got lost in the message was his own self serving agenda.

Anyway, thanks for posting this. It's a good reminder of some of things that shaped us.

Sorbo I remember from the Andromeda show. In said series there are a few references to Ayn Rand, including showing the lead "Nietzschean" character reading one of her books (centuries in the future!)

Yeah, there was a whole culture of Nietzscheans who formed a culture based on Nietzsche's writing. They destroyed the Interstellar Commonwealth that had kept peace in the galaxy for millennia because "fuck you, that's why?"

I'm reading a book on Peter the Great. It covers a lot more than just Peter's history.

Last night I was reading about Louis XIV dying. His son, all his grandsons and all save one of his great grandsons had preceded him into the hereafter. Queen Anne of England had sixteen children and not one lived long enough to have kids. It's why the English had to import a German to rule them.

Florida Governor Rick Scott responds to worst tuberculosis outbreak in 20 years...by rushing closure of only clinic dedicated to TB treatment in the region, and suppresses the CDC report warning of the outbreak to legislators .

Worst TB outbreak in 20 years kept secret

JACKSONVILLE —

The CDC officer had a serious warning for Florida health officials in April: A tuberculosis outbreak in Jacksonville was one of the worst his group had investigated in 20 years. Linked to 13 deaths and 99 illnesses, including six children, it would require concerted action to stop.

That report had been penned on April 5, exactly nine days after Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed the bill that shrank the Department of Health and required the closure of the A.G. Holley State Hospital in Lantana, where tough tuberculosis cases have been treated for more than 60 years.

As health officials in Tallahassee turned their focus to restructuring, Dr. Robert Luo’s 25-page report describing Jacksonville’s outbreak — and the measures needed to contain it – went unseen by key decision makers around the state. At the health agency, an order went out that the TB hospital must be closed six months ahead of schedule.

Had they seen the letter, decision makers would have learned that 3,000 people in the past two years may have had close contact with contagious people at Jacksonville’s homeless shelters, an outpatient mental health clinic and area jails. Yet only 253 people had been found and evaluated for TB infection, meaning Florida’s outbreak was, and is, far from contained.

The public was not to learn anything until early June, even though the same strain was appearing in other parts of the state, including Miami.

My father-in-law knows just how to pull this one off. At the park where we go to watch fireworks, there is a side parking lot next to the baseball diamond that is always closed off, as they attempt to fill the park from back to front. He approaches the security officers with a long story about an annual family reunion and we always park next to the ball diamond, and invariably, the officer on duty allows us to pass. Rather amusing, but also very convenient. I joked to my wife that I have no idea what the family is going to do when he eventually passes on.

Oh, he's a fan of Glen Beck too - figures :

On July 22, 2011 the social democratic regime in Oslo was struck by violence so spectacular it took us all by surprise. The ruling class of a country has never, as far as I know, been so systematically and viciously assaulted by a single individual. The bombing of government offices was impressive enough, but the shooting spree which followed was mind-bogglingly effective, literally decimating the crème de la crème of aspiring young politicians for the ruling Labor Party. The ethics of shooting defenseless teenagers at summer camp can be questioned, to say the least, but it sure was a brilliant way to strike at the core of the Norwegian political elite. These are the next generation of political leaders, and what better way to terrorize the parents – the current top holders of political office – than going after their kids? As Glenn Beck has observed, the AUF youth at Utøya are reminiscent of Hitler-Jugend. Utøya is where leftist kids come to be indoctrinated every summer, steeping themselves in liberal propaganda and listening to inspirational speeches by current and former social democratic leaders such as Gro Harlem Brundtland. In retrospect, it was extremely thoughtless by the ruling class not to post a single armed guard at this event. Politics is serious business after all, and such a hotbed of recruitment concentrated on an island with no easy escape is an obvious target for political enemies, if you think about it. I guess they were still under the illusion that Norway is an idyllic place which somehow does not foster violent malcontents no matter how downtrodden we get.

Another one from Johnathan Krohn, Not much new but I did like this bit...I was a right-wing child star

Political divisiveness in America today is a childish thing anyway. The never-ending war between the left and the right seems to me like a couple of drunken college boys fighting over which one of their fraternities is cooler. Think about it: Once you join a side, you have to obey the house rules, go to all the parties, and defend your status as a member of the greatest club on campus. And this is what drove me away from conservatism to my admittedly center-left position of independent mindedness (if that’s a thing).

I was tired of being a part of the ideological warfare this country is so caught up in.

Syrian opposition group: Death toll tops 17,000

An opposition group that documents human rights violations in Syria says more than 17,000 people have been killed since the uprising against President Bashar Assad began in March 2011.

The violence has grown increasingly chaotic in recent months, and it is difficult to assign blame for much of the bloodshed as the country spirals toward civil war.

The government restricts journalists from moving freely, making it impossible to independently verify death tolls.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Monday that among the 17,129 deaths are 11,897 civilians, 4,348 soldiers and 884 military defectors.

Annan and Bashar al-Assad agree on 'new approach' to Syrian conflict

Kofi Annan, the United Nations special envoy to Syria, announced today that he and Bashar al-Assad reached an agreement on a new approach to ending the violence in Syria.

But support for a negotiated solution with the regime to the Syrian crisis seems to be waning, even among those world powers who steadfastly oppose outside intervention. This could leave Mr. Annan with only the regime and its supporters behind his diplomatic efforts, warned an editorial in the Lebanon-based Daily Star today.

Iran becomes UN's go-to for arms trade

Iran was elected to a top post on the UN Arms Trade Treaty conference, revealed UN Watch today in an exclusive report.

The Geneva-based human rights group is calling on UN chief Ban Ki-moon, who addressed the conference on the same day, to condemn the selection of the Tehran regime.

Although the U.N. conference website and summary fail to name the 15 members elected to the bureau on July 3rd, UN Watch has discovered that the countries elected to the five regional groups include Iran, Japan, and South Korea for the Asian group; Kenya, Egypt and Nigeria for Africa; Azerbaijan, Belarus, and Ukraine for Eastern Europe; Australia, Netherlands and Switzerland for the Western Europe & Others Group; and Mexico and two others for Latin America.

The United Nations Conference on the Arms Trade Treaty, which opened last week and runs until July 27, promises to deliver a new agreement to regulate the transfer of arms.

[Link: hosted.ap.org...]
Does that mean you get less money back when your bond matures?
I am so confused!

Yeah, looks like the investors are paying interest to the treasury...

In a sale Monday, the treasury sold three-month bonds at -0.005 percent, and six-month bonds at -0.006 percent. The treasury agency says it's the first time they have registered negative yields.

Maybe that means the Euro is going to deflate. Investors would bet that the treasury bond is going to lose less value that the Euro if the kept cash.

Even when the interest rates offered are positive, if they are too small to cover expected inflation they are in effect "negative" rates as far as real returns. The US short term rates are so low the buyers are essentially not making any real gains.

It's just a safe place to park money.

According to the Jerusalem Post a video has confirmed it.

Although Iran's selection has not yet been formally published according to UN Watch, video footage of the Conference clearly confirms IRNA's claims that Iran was selected for key roles.

The war on terror is not a war on Islam.

That's the thing though. For a large number of the religious right, it is. That's where things like the Louisiana voucher snafu come from. That's where "anti-Sharia" laws (which have actually been passed in several places) come from. That's where municipalities suddenly revoking permission to build mosques comes from.

This must be understood, if this nation is ever to have any hope of being salvaged: the War On Terror™ is, for many Americans, a holy war of Christianity vs. Islam. They refuse to recognize that "some terrorists happen to be muslim" does not mean that the entire billion-plus strong faith is evil. They see a fellow citizen who just so happens to adhere to the muslim faith and immediately equate them with The Terrorists™, solely because of that faith.

So I was reading a bit about the Iran-Contra affair, to refresh my memory of what happens when rogue states get into the arms trade business.

Anyway, it led me, indirectly, to the following little gem (via the SC decision to uphold the appeal against the conviction of the Reagan administration guy who'd apparently OK'd the arms trafficking).

The SC, in the same set of rulings, rejected a Bush administration appeal against a lower court ruling that the military needed to defend itself against a discrimination claim on the part of a servicewoman who was fired for being gay.

I particularly enjoyed the name on the brief. Just a further reminder that Republicans are no friends to the gay community:

In its Supreme Court appeal, Cheney v. Pruitt, No. 92-389, the Administration said the appeals court should have deferred to the military rather than "second-guess the judgment of military officials as to what categories of persons should be barred from military service in order to promote an effective and disciplined fighting force."

Anyway, that was my fun bit of internet randomness for the day!

Abbas to attend Tehran summit, following invitation by Ahmadinejad

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will visit Tehran in late August in order to attend a summit of the Non-Aligned Movement, Palestinian officials said on Sunday, after the Palestinian Authority head was invited by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Abbas was invited to the summit by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, on Ahmadinejad's behalf, during a meeting between the two in Jordan. The PA chairman accepted the invitation to the meet, which will take place August 30-31 in Tehran.

In an interview to Israel's Channel 2 broadcast on Saturday night, Abbas said that the Palestinians will resume attempts to get the United Nations to recognize a Palestinian state, if no peace talks with Israel are forthcoming.

Arms Trade Treaty

The Arms Trade Treaty is the name of a potential multilateral treaty that would regulate the international trade in conventional weapons. The treaty will be negotiated at a global conference under the auspices of the United Nations from 2 - 27 July 2012 in New York....

U.S. overturns former position

On 14 October 2009 the Obama administration announced in a statement released by Hillary Clinton and the State Department that it was overturning the position of former President George W. Bush's administration, which had opposed a proposed Arms Trade treaty on the grounds that national controls were better.[7] The shift in position by the U.S., the world's biggest arms exporter with a $55 billion-a-year trade in conventional firearms[8] (40 percent of the global total), led to the launching of formal negotiations at the United Nations in order to begin drafting the Arms Trade Treaty. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a statement the U.S. would support the negotiations on condition they are “under the rule of consensus decision-making needed to ensure that all countries can be held to standards that will actually improve the global situation.” Clinton said the consensus, in which every nation has an effective veto on agreements, was needed “to avoid loopholes in the treaty that can be directly exploited by those wishing to export arms irresponsibly.”[9]

282 Gus  Mon, Jul 9, 2012 9:29:40am

re: #281 Gus

Arms Trade Treaty

Opposition in the United States

Given the predominant position of the United States as a global arms exporter[10], any such treaty would have limited relevance without its participation. Ratification would require passage by a 2/3 majority of the U.S. Senate in addition to presidential approval, which is rendered unlikely by opposition from gun rights groups such as the National Rifle Association, who claim that the treaty is an attempt to circumvent the Second Amendment and similar guarantees in state constitutions in order to impose domestic gun regulations.[11] Advocates of the treaty claim that it only pertains to international arms trade, and would have no effect on current domestic laws[12][13]. These advocates point to the UN General Assembly resolution starting the process on the Arms Trade Treaty. The resolution explicitly states that it is “the exclusive right of States to regulate internal transfers of arms and national ownership, including through constitutional protections on private ownership.”

As of September 14, 2011, 58 US Senators (45 Republicans and 13 Democrats) have expressed their opposition to an ATT that would limit the Second Amendment rights of US citizens.[14] As this group comprises far more than 1/3 of the Senate, it is sufficient to block ratification of the treaty by the United States if the treaty addresses civilian ownership of firearms. However, the strength of the opposition remains unclear because the treaty will not likely address the Second Amendment issue.

A quick search of the Internet (on Feb 8, 2012) confirms that the treaty is highly controversial in the United States and has been fodder for political speeches, blogs, viral political e-mails and advertisements claiming or insinuating that the treaty provides a "legal way around the 2nd amendment," and a "complete ban on all weapons for U.S. citizens." Snopes.com, the "urban myth" tester, calls the viral e-mail "scarelore" and false.[15] The Huffington Post reports that "such a scenario remains virtually impossible."[16] The Los Angeles Times reports on October 23, 2011 that "only a narrow fringe purports that Americans could see their guns taken away by the U.N., which has no authority over constitutional rights."[17]

283 Gus  Mon, Jul 9, 2012 9:30:13am

So to recap...

Ratification [of the UN Arms Trade Treaty] would require passage by a 2/3 majority of the U.S. Senate in addition to presidential approval, which is rendered unlikely by opposition from gun rights groups such as the National Rifle Association, who claim that the treaty is an attempt to circumvent the Second Amendment and similar guarantees in state constitutions in order to impose domestic gun regulations.

I did not know that!!

I figure that's some kind of quip meant as a kind of disagreement, but in fact the NRA wants to preserve the right of any non-felon to buy as many weapons as they wish to, no matter where they end up the next day. This is a big deal in Arizona and New Mexico, where 'next day' could be deep in Mexico. That's why Fast & Furious resulted in so few prosecutions. The buyers weren't breaking any laws.

No worries. The UN is leaping into action and will string out the conflict as long as possible.
Annan and Bashar al-Assad agree on 'new approach' to Syrian conflict

Why blame the UN? The UN is bound by its charter not to interfere with the internal affairs of a sovereign nation. It had to be that way otherwise most nations would not have signed on, the UN would have been as pointless as the League of Nations, and we would probably have had WWIII about 25 years after the end of WWII.

The UN may not be quite what it was intended to be, and it has some major problems, but it succeeded at the main reason it was created: to prevent WWIII.

Why? Hillel Neuer has a point. But the larger picture is multifaceted. I already noted the treaty will not be ratified by the USA. There's no doubt it won't be ratified by Israel, Russia, China, Venezuela and probably in the end not even Iran itself -- unless it does so as a propaganda move (i.e. "see we're part of the arms treaty now leave us alone.")

I can't seem to find fault with that.

How many governments has the US replaced with their own leaders? How should that be viewed on the world stage?

The point is, there are no purely innocent countries out there and to maintain dialogue, as long as dialogue continues to reduce the number and severity of conflict, seats in the UN have to be assigned impartially.

Defense Firms Fear U.S. Budget Cuts

WASHINGTON—A specter is haunting Washington—the specter of sequestration.

That's the term budget wonks use to describe automatic federal spending cuts that are set to begin in January. For months, U.S. aerospace and defense firms have warned that across-the-board cuts put into law by last year's Budget Control Act would spell disaster for the industry. Now they are starting to talk openly about when they might have to hand out pink slips to their employees.

With more than $50 billion in new Pentagon cuts set to kick in in early January, industry officials say they must begin notifying employees of potential layoffs or plant closings this fall, consistent with state and federal laws. In an election year, however, it's unclear whether lawmakers can agree on a deal to reverse some of the cuts.

It's also unclear how extensive the job cuts would be. The National Association of Manufacturers said in a June 21 report that Pentagon spending cuts may lead to the loss of more than 1 million jobs, including 130,000 manufacturing jobs, by 2014.

...U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has described sequestration as the "meat ax" approach to reducing defense outlays. And he has urged Congress to halt the automatic cuts, saying they would compromise national security.

"The Defense Department is not a jobs program," Mr. Panetta told lawmakers in June. "It's a program to defend the nation. But clearly, that kind of sequestration cut across the board would have a serious impact, not only on men and women in uniform but on our personnel and the contractors who serve the defense establishment."

And if 1 million jobs do fall from this the first person to be blamed will be George Bush.

re: #318 Romantic Heretic

One could also point out that with the bipolar nature of the post WWII period - US v. USSR - the fear of a direct confrontation between the two and an escalation to nuclear war, was a greater motivator towards peace than the UN. Instead, both the US and USSR used the UN as a proxy to fight their propaganda war.

Better to fight with propaganda than with actual bullets.

However, that's not to say that some parts of the UN haven't done great work. The WHO being one. UNICEF as another.

The work of the UN peacekeeping forces is decidedly mixed, depending on the way the peacekeeping resolution was structured and whether the UN could use force to maintain the peace and/or disarm the forces targeted by the mission.

With the current mission in Syria, it's only a bunch of UN observers whose movements are greatly limited by the regime and its loyalists. They can't use force to stop the violence - they can only catalog the butchers' bill. And Annan isn't going to be successful in dealing with Assad because Assad has no problem using force to crush the rebellion.

And for another view:

Military panic attack Defense contractors raising unnecessary alarm over budget cuts

Since 1998, U.S. military spending has grown exponentially, reaching 20 percent of overall federal spending and more than half of discretionary spending levels not seen since the end of World War II. In particular, the portion of the budget used to purchase equipment from private industry has doubled over the last 14 years, growing from about $100 billion in 1998 to nearly $200 billion today.

Unsurprisingly, the defense industry has enjoyed remarkable prosperity during this time, with industry profits quadrupling between 2001 and 2010. But with a struggling economy and the conclusion of two wars, the United States can no longer afford to fund a massive defense buildup in the absence of an existential threat.

Every bipartisan group confronting the deficit problem – including the president’s Debt Commission (Simpson-Bowles), the Domenici-Rivlin Task Force, and the Gang of Six – has recommended reducing defense spending by about $1 trillion over the next decade. And the Budget Control Act (BCA), passed last summer, called for Congress to identify $1.2 trillion in cuts, revenue, or both to address this fiscal dilemma.

Continues.

Saudi man dies after chase by religious police

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia, July 9 (Reuters) - A Saudi man was killed and his wife and two children were injured when their car crashed off a bridge while being pursued by religious police in the conservative Islamic kingdom, a spokesman for the religious police said on Monday.

In Saudi Arabia, a monarchy that follows a strict version of Sunni Islam, the religious police patrol the streets to enforce gender segregation and ensure the public behave in accordance with their strict Islamic teachings.

Formally known as the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice (CPVPV), religious police officers arrest those who do not comply with their rules. In March the commission's head banned car pursuits which had led to several fatal accidents.

Family members told Saudi Arabia's al-Watan newspaper that the chase began when a CPVPV officer confronted Abdulrahman Ahmed al-Ghamdi, 35, and his family while he was returning home from an amusement park in the southern province of al-Baha. They said the loud volume of Ghamdi's car radio prompted the confrontation.

The car sped off, police in pursuit, and crashed over a bridge, killing Ghamdi. His nine year-old son is in a coma and his wife had her arm amputated as a result of the accident, al-Watan reported. His younger daughter, 4, was in stable condition in hospital.

Gut the defense department from what? Iraq War and GWOT levels? You propose we keep building battleships from WWII?

Russia, China, Iran, Venezuela, etc...are all building up their military while we are shrinking ours. What could possibly go wrong?

We're miles ahead of them even with cuts.

Oh come on,no one proposed gutting defense. We need skilled workers doing things besides building stuff for war, there are openings in every state for skilled tradespeople for everything from welding to electrical, plumbing, electronics, you name it. Employers here in GA are having trouble filling those jobs. I know because my son is going to end up filling one of those jobs once he gets into trade school.

The answer isn't to keep throwing resources into stuff we simply do not need.

We could cut ours in fucking half and STILL be outspending all of them. Why are our defense contractors charging us so fucking much for shit that doesn't work? Who keeps funneling more money towards shit that doesn't work?

397 HappyWarrior  Mon, Jul 9, 2012 10:50:33am

It's funny. Government spending on health care, education, etc is bad but spending like a drunk new 21 year old on defense is good policy. One can't in good faith complain about spending while ignoring and in some cases feeding the largest elephant in the room.I don't support dramatically cutting DoD but some cuts are needed. The generals themselves agree with that.

The defense department can afford to be gutted, or at least downsized. We spend a fuckton on defense and on weapons and on war, and a large part of that comes from bloated, obsolete projects that the Pentagon doesn't even want.

I think the problem is that there is a lot of *foreign aid* and other things hidden in the defense budget. Like the JROTC programs and ROTC programs --that includes the personnel, equipment and uniforms for the students.

Still, I agree, there is a lot that could go -future wars aren't going to need the equipment, they are going to need savvy computer users and multi-lingual soldiers.

We do need skilled workers but if the defense contractors have to keep downsizing because cuts there will be far fewer jobs available.

Yep. In fact he's partnered with our dept of labor to help with the website Go Build Georgia to explain why these are the jobs our kids could fill without huge piles of debt coming out of school. Since my son has a disability, the state has a program that will help prep him (help with getting a driver's license, getting his high school diploma, job interview skills, helping with trade school tuition, etc) and his voc rehab caseworker told us about the website. But yes, those "Dirty Jobs" are key to keeping the country from crumbling, and to get our kids into something if a 4 yr degree isn't for them.

Transgender Woman Attacked, Sentenced to Male Prison

A transgender woman was recently sentenced to a 41-month prison term in a men's prison for acting in what many are calling self-defense in response to a hate crime. Cece McDonald, a young, black, transgender woman was arrested in Minnesota last June for stabbing and killing a white man who was part of a group that physically attacked her while yelling racial and homophobic slurs.

McDonald accepted a plea deal and pled guilty to second-degree manslaughter last month and will be incarcerated in the Minnesota state prison as a male. The court's decision to do so has brought to light the physical and sexual violence that transgender people experience within the prison system.

It's still morning in my world. Help me out.

Transgender --has had surgery?--no?

Depends on the stage. Not all changes happen at one time.

Both my parents are first generation 4-year college graduates. Before them everyone was a skilled worker --very skilled. The kind of brains that when given the opportunity become engineers (my dad) and get their masters, & pass the series-7 (mom).

I would have been happier taking the technical degree route. But, of course, the american dream dictates that if given the opportunity, one goes for a Bachelors degree. I never finished.

My only concern is that many don't have basic understanding of business--and I think this holds people back. I think there would be many more small businesses if people even took a few classes at their local community college. Accounging 101 . . .even quickbooks.

Well, Lab puppies don't jump as much as Boxer Puppies.

True. At least relative to Oscar, boxer puppies don't blot out the sun when they stretch.
