Romney Surrogate Sununu Dives Into the Xenophobic Gutter

Fear mongering goes into overdrive
Politics • Views: 31,875

When Republicans are backed into a corner, the usual response is to start fear mongering like crazy to take attention away from their own problems, and that’s exactly what former New Hampshire governor John Sununu did today, spewing xenophobia and far right hatred at Barack Obama: Romney Surrogate Sununu: ‘I Wish This President Would Learn How to Be an American’.

The Romney campaign ratcheted up its language on Tuesday in a conference call on which former New Hampshire governor and White House chief of staff John Sununu said he wished President Obama “would learn how to be an American.”
Sununu led a series of Romney surrogates in questioning the president’s commitment to economic freedom, dredging up the president’s ties to Tony Rezko; another speaker on the conference call said Obama’s policies were akin to “socialism.” …

“The president clearly demonstrated that he has absolutely no idea how the American economy functions. The men and women all over America who have worked hard to build these businesses, their businesses from the ground up is how our economy became the envy of the world — it is the American way,” Sununu said in his opening remarks of the conference call.

He added: “I wish this president would learn how to be an American.”

The first question to Sununu later in the call was about that comment, which exploded quickly on Twitter for its stark claim about Obama.

“What I thought I said, but I guess I didn’t say, is that the president has to learn the American formula for creating business,” he said. “If I didn’t give all that detail I apologize.”

Politics ain’t beanbag, this is true. Also true: John Sununu is a racist dog-whistling jackass.

I’m so sick of Romney and his surrogates thinking only they understand business. As for the “learn to be an American” remark, Sununu is a dirtbag for playing that game. I know it hurts that your candidate is a grade bullshit artist, Sununu but suggesting that the president of the United States needs to learn how to be an American is a grade A dogwhistle to the bigots who believe this president doesn’t love this country.

Obama signs 3 trade deals, biggest since NAFTA
Measures could be worth billions to American exporters

President Barack Obama signed off Friday on the first three — and possibly last — free trade agreements of his administration, deals with South Korea, Colombia, and Panama that could be worth billions to American exporters and create tens of thousands of jobs.

The three deals were years in the making, and the difficulty of bringing them to fruition make it unlikely there will be another bilateral trade agreement during Obama’s current term.

I will listen to what Ann has to say about the GOP and she summed it up well. Christie had the sense to keep out of the race this time around, he did not want to have hiimself sullied by association with the Clown Show, and Mitt just assumed he could walk in and pick up an election from a nation sick and tired of Obama.

In Switzerland, you tax returns are private documents, but the actual amount you pay in taxes each year is a matter of public record.

That has an odd effect: people have been known to actually pay more taxes than they need to in order to give the impression that they are wealthier than they actually are.

US,

Brazil sign trade, economic agreement as Obama visits
The U.S. and Brazil signed a trade and economic cooperation agreement to boost commerce between the Western Hemisphere’s largest economies as President Barack Obama arrived for his first visit to South America.

The accord creates a U.S.-Brazil commission to expand trade and remove non-tariff barriers, according to a statement today from U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk’s office. The commission will be led by Kirk’s office and by officials from two Brazilian ministries responsible for trade, industry and development.

Obama, appearing with Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff in Brasilia today, said the nation is becoming a global economic leader and the two governments have an “historic opportunity” to deepen cooperation. Obama said he is starting his first visit to South America in Brazil to highlight its economic ascendancy.

Increasing U.S. companies’ sales to Brazil would help meet Obama’s goal of doubling exports by 2015. U.S. sales to Brazil climbed to a record $35.4 billion last year as the Brazilian real’s two-year, 41 percent rally against the dollar made American goods more attractive.

Tim Pawlenty: Sununu Walked Back His Anti-Obama Comments

“Gov. Sununu made those comments earlier today,” Pawlenty said. “He then clarified and walked back those statements by saying he meant that President Obama really doesn’t have a familiarity with what it means to be in the American entrepreneurial and private enterprise system … and comments to that effect.”

He added that “I think he clarified it, and obviously, the governor has a knack for colorful language and can be very informative and entertaining. This one, he admitted perhaps he wasn’t as clear as he should have been and issued a clarification. I think that was appropriate under the circumstances.”

Sununu is a douchebag.

Allow me to clarify: He’s made mostly of water and smells slightly of vinegar, that is all I meant.

Colbert: Obama Trying To Make ‘Bain’ Synonymous With ‘A Source Of Harm Or Ruin’

Romney adviser Ed Gillespie tried to clear the whole thing up on Sunday, saying Romney retired from Bain capital “retroactively.” What a novel idea, Colbert thought. “So he wasn’t responsible for firing all of those people whose jobs were outsourced. - Gay Americans are an abomination.
- Poor people deserve to be poor.
- Union workers are socialist thugs.
- The unemployed are lazy parasites.
- Latinos are illegal until proven otherwise.
- Naturalized citizens with heavy accents are not true Americans.
- The Bible trumps the Constitution.
- America is a Christian nation.
- Secularism equals Satanism.
- Global warming is a hoax.
- Environmentalism is unpatriotic and an attack on the will of God.
- The U.S. auto industry should go bankrupt.
- Cutting taxes for the ultra-wealthy and subsidizing corporations is patriotic.
- Cutting taxes for the middle class and providing funding for Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and the Food Stamp program is unpatriotic.
- If you cannot afford to pay for your family’s health insurance coverage or preventative health care, then all of you are simply taking up oxygen and deserve to die anyway.
- All progressives are communists.
- Liberal Democrats hate America.
- Secession from the Union is the ultimate expression of patriotism.

Romney (and his advocates such as Mr. Sununu) judges a person’s qualifications to lead based on the depth of one’s wallet rather than the depth of one’s wisdom. He evaluates a person’s net worth based on the value of one’s portfolio rather than one’s value to their community.

And unlike many self-righteous conservatives, progressives do not believe that some political parties and regions of the nation are more “pro-America” than are others, and we do not wrap ourselves in the flag and indignantly proclaim that patriotism is an attribute exclusive to those who share our ideologies.

Jan Brewer on SB 1070: Jesus ‘Got Me Here’

According to Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, the aftermath of SB 1070 was hardest on… Jan Brewer. In an interview with David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network, Brewer defended her harsh and partly unconstitutional anti-immigration law SB 1070, and even cited Jesus. She told Brody that she felt politicians turned on her after she signed the discriminatory, racial profiling bill into law, noting that the aftermath was “tough” on her and she would sit on her patio and think “Jesus hold my hand, you got me here, now you’ve got to get me through all of this.”

From a Yahoo article:

“Asked to clarify his statement, Sununu walked it back, explaining he only meant that he wished Obama would adopt the “American formula” for creating businesses and introducing an environment where “entrepreneurs can thrive.”

Still Sununu was back on the attack seconds later. Asked about a new Obama ad that suggests Romney won’t release additional years of his tax returns because they might show he didn’t pay taxes, the former governor trashed the Obama camp as “stupid.”

“If (Romney) didn’t pay taxes, you don’t think the IRS would be knocking on his door? The IRS would have knocked at his door, and we would know all about it,” Sununu said. “The Obama campaign has once again demonstrated that they are clearly and unequivocally a bunch of liars.”

So is Mitt afraid he is losing the Birther vote? Is that why lots of his surrogates play the “Not American” card. It seems as though they don’t even realize they are in a general election campaign now, not a primary campaign. These are two distinct parts of campaigns. The rhetoric that works with primary voters doesn’t attract that small slice of the electorate who haven’t made up their mind yet. I am pretty sure, as a rule, this type of rhetoric doesn’t work on that group. Plus the Bain attacks are working, the Romney campaign appears unprepared to respond adequately to his time at Bain Capital and ReturnGate.
Most seasoned campaign folks know these calls of “unAmerican” don’t work on that particular group of voters, so Sununu’s ridiculous blathering makes me wonder if the internals are looking squishy among the hard-core voting conservative.
I hope the press and bloggers keep the pressure on Romney. He should be compelled to release a minimum of 12 years of tax returns.
