New Mexico Gets Bain’d: Romney Took $2.5M in Tax Dollars and 1,000 Jobs From New Mexicans in 2000s

We got the business.
Business • Views: 61,777

Read it all here.

Mitt Romney’s Bain Capital duped New Mexico more than a decade ago when it set up a Silver City call center, promising more than 1,000 local jobs, only to have it close just two and half years later in a wave of outsourcing, laying off almost 800 middle-class workers and taking New Mexico taxpayers for more than $2.5 million in the process.

Before Bain Capital purchased a majority stake in the company in 1999, Stream International employed seven times more American workers, just over 3,000, than foreign. By the time Romney’s Bain sold its interest in the company in 2001, they had constricted Stream’s domestic investment while expanding operations in at least nine foreign countries.

Under Romney, Bain Capital took “free stuff” from our governments including free rent and free job training, all funded by New Mexico taxpayers. When the free training dried up, Bain packed up and left town taking at least $1.4 million in New Mexico taxpayer dollars and leaving behind a company and a community ideally set to be outsourced to no less than four foreign companies.

[…]

In Silver City, Bain had created almost a thousand American jobs just to siphon the profits from that work to build oversees facilities where their jobs would go to die.

Even before the company had hired its full contingent of new jobs, the company had positioned the Silver City facility to be outsourced to one of the many new foreign call centers Bain and Stream had built.

In October 2001, with oversees call centers profitable, Bain promptly took its money, including the millions provided by New Mexico taxpayers, and ran.

[…]

In New Mexico, $2.5 million is a lot of money, and 1,000 is a lot of jobs.

All Romney had to do was say, 'Yes, I've made my share of mistakes but thankfully, I've learned from them'.

That more than anything would have connected him with most Americans. We all know what it is like to fail, get up, and try again, acknowledging our mistakes.

Romney's weakest characteristic isn't his business acumen, it his hubris.

Obama could teach him a thing or two about that.

Bain is becoming the type for contemporary American "capitalism" - privatize the profits, socialize the costs.

Especially in Silver City. Where would all of the laid-off go to find new work?

It is not fair to blame Mitt Romney for the matter of this call center, as the deal to open the center was executed more than a year after he had ceased having an active role in managing Bain Capital.

But he modifies that with, "but it's still a terrific company." He's trying to have it both ways and it's rather transparent. He's the archetypical politician. Mitt was still legally in control of Bain (per the SEC filings) and profited mightily off of the company at the time, so spare me the "no active role" stuff.

Operation "Piss Off Mitt" Seems to be Working

"...If Coppins is right, Romney is under the peculiar impression that Obama's attacks on his business background are wildly ruthless and out of bounds. This is odd since Romney has been attacked for his business background repeatedly in the past. If it seems more intense this time, it's only because this kind of thing is always more intense in a presidential race.

Obama is unquestionably running a tough campaign, but if Romney is losing his cool over questions about his taxes and his stewardship of Bain Capital, he's just showing he's not ready for the big leagues."

Yes and no. Yes, it's unfair to lump what happened after he left.

OTOH, company course doesn't change overnight. For example, at the very least, the next few rounds of Microsoft software updates had some Bill Gates' input after he retired. There will be at least a couple more iDevices that Steve Jobs had some kind of input into. So there's might have some input from Romney in this transaction.

If Bain turned into this predatory company after such a short time Romney left, it doesn't speak well of his ability to choose personnel.

Maybe I'm misremembering here....but wasn't it Zimmerman who told the story about how he got out of the car and walked a ways away from it, looking for Trayvon after he lost sight of him? And how it was on his walk back to the car that Trayvon "attacked" him?

And now, he's saying that Martin was right there when he got out of the car.

Here's how you hit Romney on the horse prom deduction. If you look at the tax return you see that they wrote off the entire loss associated with "ROM Enterprises" totaling $77,731. Now, ostensibly, the reason horse prom is so important to Anne Romney is that she credits dressage with her near total recovery from MS symptoms.

However this goes a long way towards showing how wealth makes tax deductions available for her and Mitt that aren't available for most people. Most people with MS who want to write off their physical therapy expenses on their taxes must first take 7.5% of their adjusted gross income away from these expenses before they become tax deductible.

You can deduct any medical expenses that surpass 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income, according to Bankrate, the financial resource website. For example, you calculate that 7.5 percent of your adjusted gross income is $5,000 and your medical expenses, including therapy, are $7,000. Your deduction will then be $2,000. Look at the standard deduction and compare it to your entire itemized deduction total. It the standard deduction amount is higher, use it for your taxes; you will not have to worry about a therapy medical expense deduction.

If the Romney's had classified horse prom as a medical expense, (ignoring the fact that it doesn't qualify under the licensed professional requirement) they'd have had to exceed $1.6275 Million in costs before being able to deduct anything. However by making the activity a "business" expense they can write off the entire loss.

Where's that 72 percent from? This one:

Plug the words “Bain Capital” into an OpenSecrets.org search and you learn that while Bain people have lovingly contributed to their former CEO’s presidential campaign, almost 3/4 of their contributions to other candidates, 72% to be precise, have gone to Democrats. That’s a higher percentage to Dems than the AFL-CIO!

Or this one?

Between his campaign committee and a monster super PAC supporting his candidacy, Romney has benefited from about 72% percent of the near $33 million Wall Street has contributed through February.

Disgraceful is the billions pissed away to Detroit to bail out the auto unions and corrupt executives. Consequently, billions of dollars in capital was destroyed and will never return. The president can brag about "saving" the US auto industry, but he killed untold other businesses and jobs by directing those billions into a money pit.

On opensecrets, it was 72% to Dems as of a few days ago -- clearly, a lot of their employees there are upset and the donation shift is underway. I guess that is to be expected. Dude, the collapse of Detroit would have had a ripple affect on their parts suppliers and ancillary profit centers (transporters, insurers, dealerships, &c). About two million jobs in total.

The destruction of "capital" was created with the tranches and the generation of specious "financial instruments" sold and resold by financial institutions.

Remember when the Cons said that the bailout and stimulus would create huge inflation in 2008 and 2009? See any? US short, medium, and long term bonds are selling at their lowest levels in the past 70 years.

Say what you will about George W. Bush, but he has not forgotten those whom he sent to war:

George W. Bush on his bike ride honoring veterans: "This is a way for me to say that not only do I respect them, but I love them"

On Thursday, "Piers Morgan Tonight" shared a rare and exclusive behind the scenes visit with former president George W. Bush.

Having returned to his home state of Texas since leaving office, Bush generally avoids the glare of the spotlight and the public eye. But he remains passionate about honoring and supporting America's veterans, through an event bearing his signature initial:

"The W100 is a hundred kilometer mountain bike ride to honor our vets who have been wounded in combat, to thank their families, and to thank the groups that have helped them recover from serious injury," explained the 43rd U.S. president.

As part of the W100, the one-time commander in chief rode alongside 20 servicemen and women, each of whom had been wounded in the global war on terror.

Do you understand the concept of ripple effects in an economy? Detroit, like the banks, was simply too big to fail without pushing us into a full-blown depression. Millions of jobs across the country depend on Detroit: parts manufacturers, car dealers, mechanics, etc.

Bailouts suck, but much of the money has been repaid. More importantly, bailouts are far superior to the alternative, which is an economy that simply collapses.

The whole way. The Bush family has always been big believers in fitness and George W. Bush has always been physically active.

If you're attempting to rehabilitate Bush's image in the hope that his legacy will be a positive one, give it up--you're wasting your time.

The wars and economic collapse will insure that he's not ranked highly by presidential historians. You can't have a 25% approval rating for the last 3 years in office and magically become popular later on. And the neocon fantasy that Iraq will soon thrive and vindicate the Administration's war strategy becomes more laughable as each day passes.

I can still read his tweets if I go to his Twitter page—"The Iowa countryside is incredibly green," he observantly mused recently—but they don't show up in my feed. As far as transparency violations go, this is pretty small potatoes; it pales in comparison to deleting all of your official emails after seven days, which is the Perry administration's official policy.

Mitt Romney has been determined to resist releasing his tax returns at least since his bid for Massachusetts governor in 2002 and has been confident that he will never be forced to do so, several current and former Bain executives tell The Huffington Post. Murder accused collapses in dock

A terminally-ill man arrested for murder has collapsed in the dock of Adelaide Magistrates Court.

Antonio Spinotti, 57, of Marleston is jointly charged with murdering Brandt Stuart Kay, 43, whose body was found in a public toilet at Glenelg last December.

Spinotti's lawyer told the media his client had been a Crown witness.

Spinotti, who has hepatitis C and HIV, collapsed in the dock and an ambulance was called.

The man's lawyer, John Mattner, said his client needed to take up to 16 pills per day and had not been given his medication since he was arrested on Wednesday.

"Mr Spinotti is in a serious condition for medical reasons, he's tested positive for a number of issues such as hepatitis C and HIV and is currently on methadone," he said.

"He has not has his medication for some time.

"The authorities have a duty of care to look after people in custody. On this occasion, given the collapse, it's of serious concern."

Yeah, see, in most parts of the country, it's more uncommon NOT to answer the door with a gun. Especially if the person fails to identify him/herself. I don't know how the cops thought that would actually end well, and now a man is dead because they were stupid.

Everything is on rumor at the moment. No one seems to have seen him in the past few days, particularly since the attacks began in Damascus proper and especially after the bombing that took out his defense ministers yesterday.

There are rumors that he's out of Damascus and running things from one of his palaces in Latakia (Alawite majority town on the coast), and there are rumors that his presidential jet has taken off to points unknown.

None of the reports can be substantiated though he's clearly unsure of his personal safety so he's on the move and doesn't know who he can trust. So, there's a measure of safety in the silence/ambiguity.

373 kirkspencer  Thu, Jul 19, 2012 6:36:04am

The erroneous raids (that occur between 3 and 15% of the time, depending on who's reporting) are one of the reasons I dislike our "war on drugs".

The whole practice began because the police argued that following normal practice of knocking on doors and open warrants allowed the bad guys to dispose of all the evidence; flushing them down the toilet being the most common practice.

However, I've noticed a trend recently of getting no-knocks for things like suspected meth labs - things which not only will take significant time and effort to destroy but which leave a lot of ancillary evidence anyway. At the same time the family dog is almost always killed (whether the raid is valid or not the dog is a threat) and children are almost always forced to wait for a long period being treated as suspects or evidence. (example: Babies often forced to remain till they can be searched because somebody once shoved a balloon down a baby's throat.)

And far too many of these are exonerated in court.

No relief from the nation's drought; it's getting worse in most places - especially across the nation's Bread basket. That means higher food prices are inevitable; if crop failures are realized, it's going to mean higher prices for grains, meat, and other produce. Not good at all.

It didn't the one time it was caught. It could, as it sometimes kills adults.

But a typical standard now is that if there's a baby in the raided house it's treated as possible evidence. It's kept in the house till a qualified caretender LEO arrives and kept under observation till it has sufficient bowel movements to know it's 'empty'. (Note: ultrasound would be faster but it is more expensive and the police have to pay for the exam.)

I've never seen such tight security! It's typical for European synagogues to have Israeli security guards, but here, it started from several blocks away. Right after I snapped the photo above, a car drove down the street and the man inside asked me who I was and what I was doing. Then I had to speak to two more people and show my passport before being allowed in.

It's very sad to see what a situation had been created for the Jews, especially in countries which think of themselves as "progressive" and "tolerant." They do have good meatballs, though!

Brennan Center for Justice - voter ID laws disenfranchise minorities:

Eligible voters in 10 states including Texas do not have easy access to free IDs required by new restrictive voting laws and minorities would more likely to be disenfranchised in the process, according to a new study released Wednesday.

Republicans who support new voter ID laws dismissed as partisan the study by the Brennan Center for Justice, which has joined legal efforts to block the new regulations, as politically motivated.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott and other state Republican officials insist that new laws like the voter ID law requiring a photograph does not disenfranchise voters.

But the study found that eligible voters who would need the free identification cards required by the new laws were less likely to have access to a vehicle and live further away from offices where the IDs are issued.

“Unfortunately, these free IDs are not equally accessible to all voters,” the report said.

So he should have just let Detroit go bankrupt instead?

Detroit the city is essentially bankrupt already. But, I'm assuming you meant General Motors. Yes, it most definitely should have entered into a bankruptcy restructuring. Instead, we've just kicked the can down the road, threw away untold billions of dollars of wealth (no, they haven't even come close to paying it all back and they never will) -- and meanwhile, the economy as a whole continues to be worse off. The corrupt Detroit status quo benefited at the expense of the rest of the country -- and even that benefit will be fleeting.

This notion that we're better off because of the bailouts (be it the auto or bank bailouts) is depressingly partisan. Had Bush or McCain been responsible for the GM bailout, you'd see a large percentage of the Republican party defending it today.

You really should pay attention to facts instead of spouting GOP crack.

Don't you know that bankruptcy means restructuring, but while continuing to operate, and continuing to operate means having funds to operate?

There were no funds available from anyone at the time, except the government, because all the job creators didn't like the risk, and that includes the banks.

GM would have been sold off for pennies on the dollar and plants shipped to China or elsewhere, as some smaller ones were, and thousands of small component suppliers would have gone out of business.

GM went through a restructured bankruptcy, and I've made it quite clear that I didn't approve of the bailouts of GM or Chrysler since they were going to be restructured (not liquidated).

Politics intervened in the process in more ways than one but chief among them was that President Bush didn't want to be known for having GM go bankrupt on his watch so the bailout kicked the can into 2009; Obama gave a subsequent bailout that lasted several months more before an expedited restructuring could be done for both GM and Chrysler - and taxpayers ended up with significant shares of GM in the process. Those shares aren't likely to reach the strike price anytime soon, but unless the Treasury sells them below that price, it would be a paper loss only. GM and Chrysler have repaid the loans given to them thus far.

An expedited restructuring bankruptcy in 2008 would have been a political hit for Bush, but it could have saved several billion dollars or reduced the ownership share in the companies.

Other parts of TARP (the bailout) have netted a profit to taxpayers, particularly the bailout of the banks.

The homeowner bailouts have been less successful.

A daily accounting for TARP.

re: #390 MPH

Partisan politics is a blinding force. But I guess it is good for page views.

Partisan? OK, read this:

U.S. Throws Lifeline to Detroit
December 20, 2008

WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration said it would lend $17.4 billion to General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC, buying them a few weeks of financial relief but leaving the biggest decisions about the industry's future to President-elect Barack Obama.

Under the White House plan, the companies are required to extract enough financial concessions from workers, suppliers, dealers and other stakeholders to demonstrate their long-term viability by the end of March.

The deal's ambitious targets for the companies include replacing two-thirds of their debt with stock; using more stock instead of cash to fund retiree health-care obligations; eliminating much-criticized union "jobs banks" that pay laid-off auto workers; and establishing wage structures and workplace rules that are more competitive with foreign rivals.

But all those targets are nonbinding, and the agreement appeared to be much more porous than legislation that the administration and Democratic congressional leaders failed to pass earlier this month.

The loan package also requires the administration to drain what remains in the first half of the Treasury Department's $700 billion bailout fund, originally intended to aid the financial industry. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson said lawmakers should release the final $350 billion "to support financial-market stability," a request likely to set up another battle with Congress.

Investors cheered the auto rescue, with GM shares climbing almost 23%, or 83 cents, to $4.49 in 4 p.m. New York Stock Exchange trading. Ford Motor Co. -- which is in better financial health and isn't seeking immediate aid -- saw a more modest gain of about 4%, or 11 cents, to close at $2.95.

Continues.

No, I think if you listen to the video, you'll find it's quite probably she just said "all people need to know".

It's the same sentiment, slightly less contemptuous.

She also said this:

Ann Romney says the family gives 10 percent of its income to the Mormon church and he took no salary during his four years as Massachusetts governor. She says that should be enough to put aside people’s concerns about his finances.

That's paraphrasing, of course, so maybe the eeevil lieburls changed it up, but that's also amazingly condescending and naive. That he gives money to his church should allay people's concerns about his finances... why? And what does him not taking a salary have to do with anything?

It's actually even bigger than previously understood. Yesterday, I linked to stories alleging up to 40 percent of the financing for the California proposition to strip gay couples of their right to marry was coming from LDS Church members. Now, the numbers claimed by the opponents of Proposition 8 are even higher - more like a staggering 77 percent:

Yeah. And this plays interestingly with the debates that we're having on tax stuff. One of the things that Romney has often said he'd do is close tax loopholes. There's probably bigger issues with his taxes, but we can certainly already see that he's taking advantage of several what many would call loopholes.

It's not really hypocrisy, any more than Buffett not voluntarily paying a higher tax rate and agitating for a higher tax rate. But it would be funny to see Romney be used as an example of someone taking advantages of loopholes he wants to see closed.

Investigation into Bain Capital's initial investors. A real rogue's gallery. Who'da thunk that ROBERT MAXWELL of all people would be putting his ill-gotten gains into Romney's pockets:

David Lyons said that wealthy Europeans like his father often invested through offshore shell corporations. "It allowed some confidentiality," he said. "It allowed a lot of things."

Jack Lyons worked as an outside consultant for Bain & Co., but that ended when he and three others were charged in the Guinness Affair, a stock scandal that rocked Britain. Convicted of fraud in 1990, he was spared prison time due to his failing health, but was stripped of his knighthood.

Romney and his partners also won over the money manager for one of California's wealthiest families, the Crockers, whose family trust put in $4.8 million. Romney "was the most confident executive I've ever come across," said William Swanson, who at the time managed the family's investments.

Other early investors included Robert Maxwell, the British publishing baron, who invested $2 million. After his drowning death in 1991, investigators discovered Maxwell had stolen hundreds of millions of dollars from his company's pension funds.

Backgrounder on Ghezali. He was held in Gitmo from 2002 until 2004 when he was transferred to Sweden. Swedish authorities refused to press charges, and released him in 2004.

Ghezali was reportedly a Swedish citizen, with Algerian and Finnish origins. He had been held at the US’s Guantanamo Bay detainment camp on Cuba from 2002 to 2004, having previously studied at a Muslim religious school and mosque in Britain, and traveled to Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. He was released to Swedish custody in 2004, and the Swedish government did not press charges. He was also reportedly among 12 foreigners captured trying to cross into Afghanistan in 2009.

All this assumes that this is the guy involved in this particular attack.

If we're going to play the blame game, it would be on who? Bush Administration for releasing him in 2004? Swedish authorities who didn't press charges in 2004? Authorities (who?) who didn't keep him in custody in 2009?

Quickly I would think that the alleged bomber was radicalized well before his arrival at Gitmo. Which is not a justification of Gitmo itself. The same thing happens with regular violent criminals who are released from prison then go on to commit heinous crimes. It's always a gamble when we release any violent criminal or what happens to be genuine terrorists. There are similarities.

There are plenty of men who were released from Gitmo that have gone on to live normal lives. Some that have been released have also been innocent all along. There are also plenty of men in Gitmo who should remain behind the razor wire.

So the attack had nothing to do with Iran?
Looks like Netanyahu could have waited just a bit before his accusations.

And here we're talking about a New Mexico call center? Let's keep some perspective here, folks...

Not merely a Balance Fairy, but a Balance Fuckwad.

Notice how it seems as if credit is almost given to Romney, as it its a good thing a business got out of paying taxes and jobs were lost.

Jobs were lost. Auto bailouts, with all good and bad considered, saved jobs. Which means supporting tax base.

Backgrounder on Ghezali. He was held in Gitmo from 2002 until 2004 when he was transferred to Sweden. Swedish authorities refused to press charges, and released him in 2004.

All this assumes that this is the guy involved in this particular attack.

If we're going to play the blame game, it would be on who? Bush Administration for releasing him in 2004? Swedish authorities who didn't press charges in 2004? Authorities (who?) who didn't keep him in custody in 2009?

BTW, the Michigan driver's license provided an address of a casino in Baton Rouge Louisiana. That should have been a tipoff that it was a bogus license but we've yet to come by a passport.

wow.

Mitt Romney: "Let Detroit Go Bankrupt"

Romney taking credit for auto industry success

"I pushed the idea of a managed bankruptcy, and finally when that was done, and help was given, the companies got back on their feet," Romney said in an interview inside a Cleveland-area auto parts maker. "So, I'll take a lot of credit for the fact that this industry has come back."

Romney taking credit shows he knows the companies are successful.

So far, there's no identification of what group this guy may have been involved with/in. He could have been a lone wolf, or a member of an organized terror group. Israeli intel has been following threats to Israeli interests in Bulgaria among other places - coming from Hizbullah/Iran. Whether that link is sustained is an open question based on the information released thus far.

This seems to be the same guy that was warned about a few weeks ago. The original warning was regarding a plot to bomb a plane for the Olympics. Some of the speculation was that he was outed to scuttle his plan, looks like he found another target.
