I am, admittedly, a huge trekkie, but there's something about watching that intro that makes me feel so good. It's a perfect example of the human drive to explore and grow our knowledge of the universe. It's not about war or politics or economics, it's about the simple desire to stretch our wings and see what's out there...
That is, in my opinion, the greatest human drive. To boldly go where no one has before...

Well, the CBO is nonpartisan in that in that it can't pass judgment on what it's given, only operate with it. Which is why politicians will keep feeding revisions of an idea until the CBO gives them the conclusion they're looking for, then run with it.

Anti-Capitalist Meet-Up: Mitt And His Fellow Vulture Capitalists See Venezuela As a Threat: It Is.
The likely Republican presidential candidate and quintessential vulture capitalist, Mitt Romney, chided President Obama for not being sufficiently fearful of Venezuela’s socialist president, Hugo Chávez Friás last week
...Venezuela also jailed its criminal banksters for speculating with their depositors money. Here, Mitt, you would likely be in jail for creating tax-evading investment vehicles in the Cayman Islands. No, socialist Venezuela, under President Chavez, is definitely not a vulture-capitalist friendly country. That is why it is now thriving.
...
Yes, Venezuela is a real danger to Mitt and his fellow vulture capitalists. It presents a replicable model of a society that cares about the needs and aspirations of its members, rather than stealing labor from its people to generate profits for a few already wealthy individuals, those 92,000 people, the 0.001 percent who, like Mitt, make their wealth by stealing it from the vast majority of the world’s population.

My thoughts: This data is based on 2007-2009. The core of our economic meltdown. It is hardly strange that those who had the greatest equity, meaning stocks and property would have seen a greater drop than wage earners with little equity, given that much of the income at the top is equity derived.
After tax income differential, over a two year period, is in any case little indication of real wealth disparity. Those middle class earners would have seen their overall wealth drop by 50% or more in the same period when taking home ownership into account.
Equity, as in stocks, has bounced back dramatically since 2009. Home value has not.
In any case any two year period, obviously selected for effect here, says nothing of value, but the last 20 years or so say plenty.

Yes, I understand what the article source is, but the data source is the CBO itself which, as I understood it, was meant to be non-partisan.
The years the CBO report addressed were 2007-2009. During that two-year period, the top 1% lost the biggest percentage of their overall wealth of any group. From this, Breitbart's rag concludes that the wealth gap has shrunk and will contiinue to...and that the rich are overtaxed. Of course the Breitbart story leaves out two very important points from the CBO story it quotes.
First, what's not mentioned is that this is typical during a huge financial market collapse. The top 1% have a disproportionately high amount of stock and other market positions, compared to everyone else. So they had huge paper losses when the markets plunged.
Second, the article points out that the wealthiest Americans still pay historically low tax rates. Breitbart leaves this part out as well.

Twitchy has a habit of saying 'the Left wants to X' then showing a tweet from some nutty miscreant saying X.
Then Killgore gets all nervous about it, paranoid like a first time pot user. However the wannabe liberal censors have no pull, no real influence and hope of having their policies instituted. Meanwhile Romney is actually campaigning on cracking down on pornography.
“Wong assured us that Romney is very concerned with this, and that if he’s elected these laws will be enforced,” Trueman told the website. ”They promised to vigorously enforce federal adult obscenity laws.”
Around the time Trueman says he received those assurances, Romney signed Morality in Media's anti-porn pledge along with Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, whom he was still battling for the GOP nomination. Since then, he hasn't mentioned the issue very often.
Romney seemed to say the right words for Trueman in 2007, when he was campaigning for president in Iowa the last time. "We got to clean up the water that our kids are swimming in," he said in a TV ad. "And by that I mean the pornography, the drug culture, the violence, the sex, the perversion that bombards them day in and day out. So I want to make sure we enforce our obscenity laws."
That's comparative context, something that gets ignored when one's only motive is to triangulate true neutral.

Good. It's just not a smart idea to have that statue around anymore. As long as it stands there, it will just elicit the same response from some students, faculty and most visitors to the campus: "Oh, there's that jackass football coach who protected his child rapist buddy and covered up his crimes for so many years." Not really the kind of thoughts you want to encourage on campus and as a representation of your school.

Painful, maybe but the right thing to do.
The message is that doing the right thing is more important than winning.

Was reading earlier that the NCAA's finally gotten off its ass and is gonna come down hard on Penn State tomorrow. Supposedly short of the "death penalty," but still being reported as "unprecedented."

In an interview with the Fox Business network last week, Paul — who is no longer actively campaigning for president but has not officially suspended his bid — said he had "not made a decision" whether he'll vote for Romney in November.
The suspense is killing me.

The whole thing is how this genius defensive coordinator suddenly retired. Because JoPa et al, found out he was a pedophile, and made him just go away.
They were culpable, and this whole pushback, is just.

What do you do with a used statue? Sell it on EBAY?

Apologies to the sculptor, but I hope they melt that fucking statue down and recycle it so that no one can claim a souvenir of the major clusterfuck that JoePa came to represent.
As for what the NCAA is going to do to Penn State, them giving the "death penalty" to the Penn State football program would be very satisfying, though it probably won't happen from what I've heard. I'd feel bad for the players, but if any of them have any sense, they wouldn't want to play for a program with so much negative baggage anyway and would be looking for a transfer out, IMO.

If the article Philly linked to is any indication, tomorrow's gonna be a painful day for Penn State:
Sources say the school will continue to field a team. However, it will deal with heavy scholarship losses over the next three-to-five years as well as a multiyear ban in postseason competition and multimillion dollar financial penalties.

Like 6 of my cousins went there. My uncle & aunt attend the same parish as JoPa. I have not discussed this with them. I think my one cousin played for Penn State under Sandusky. awful.

It's going to be bad, but unfortunately it has to be bad. If the NCAA doesn't take action or just gives the school a slap on the wrist, then the precedent it sets is that a school can cover up the most heinous, most disgusting shit if it might make the school look bad were it to become public.

I was talking with someone today about this, and they felt it was unfair that the punishment will have economic consequences for people who weren't directly involved. I was like, "Yeah, but Paterno looked the other way while kids got raped."
Not surprisingly, my argument was barely acknowledged.

It's awfully ironic...in JoePa's twisted logic, he covered up Sandusky's deeds to supposedly save the university pain and embarassment (not to mention, to salve his own ego, no doubt).
However, in the end, what JoePa did to cover for (and, some say, outright enable) Sandusky over the years has led to the utter destruction of his legacy and the reputations of himself, of the Penn State football program, and of the university itself, as well as all of Sandusky's victims that suffered since the bastard was caught in 1998 and shuffled out the door.

I really don't understand what was going through his mind all these years. Did he honestly believe that, if they kept a lid on it until Sandusky either stopped or was dead, nobody would ever come forward? Nobody would ever speak up and demand to know why Penn State sat by and did nothing? Was he really that egotistical to believe that his keeping quiet was ever going to do more than just delay the inevitable?

It had to be JoePa's ego that wouldn't allow him to notify outside agencies in the 1998 incident(s) and that caused staff to fear for their jobs if they reported other incidents (see the janitors that Freeh referenced). He thought he could maintain complete control of the situation and that'd be the end of that, but it wasn't, as we know now.
Another irony of the whole thing is that if Paterno and the Penn State higher-ups had followed what has been standard practice for many years for suspected child abuse, Sandusky would have been rotting in jail for more than a decade (and wouldn't have had more victims) and Paterno would have done the right thing and been remembered as a hero.
Instead, JoePa will be remembered as a craven, cowardly control freak who put his football program over the welfare of minor children who were being sexually victimized by his one-time heir apparent...and destroying his personal legacy and that of the program he built over decades.

It should have ended with Kirk in a hospital trying to recover from his penis turning green!!!
Image: 1526996_f260.jpg/
Star Trek Generations should have been about Kirk taking on the time traveling Borg - being assimilated by the Borg like Picard was (and we could see him bald) and then using his "I am Kirok!" iron will to make the Borg self destruct as a finale showing Picard how it's done.
