This article from CNN is all I could find:
The controversy took flight in mid-July after Cathy gave an interview to the Biblical Recorder, on online journal for Baptists in North Carolina. In the July 2 story - picked up by the Baptist Press on July 16 - Cathy affirmed that his company backs the traditional family unit.
“We are very much supportive of the family – the biblical definition of the family unit,” Cathy said. “We are a family-owned business, a family-led business, and we are married to our first wives. We give God thanks for that.”
“We know that it might not be popular with everyone, but thank the Lord we live in a country where we can share our values and operate on biblical principles,” he added.
The fast-food chicken restaurant chain has long been known to espouse Christian values, and does not operate on Sundays so that employees can be free to attend church if they choose.
Proponents of same-sex marriage spread Cathy’s comments, eventually creating a firestorm of criticism on social media, including assertions that his comments and position were bigoted and hateful.
Chick-fil-A said last week, as the controversy was heating up, that it its culture and service tradition “is to treat every person with honor, dignity and respect – regardless of their belief, race, creed, sexual orientation or gender.”
“We will continue this tradition in the over 1,600 restaurants run by independent owner/operators. Going forward, our intent is to leave the policy debate over same-sex marriage to the government and political arena," said a statement from Don Perry, the company's vice president of corporate public relations, just days before Perry died.
They should issue a press release stating that their Independent Franchisees operate according to the law. Hopefully, anyway.

Apparently criticizing Chick-fil-a is a direct attack on the Christian faith
The current vicious attack on Chick-fil-A is against much more than one family and their business. It is a blatant assault on faith, Judeo-Christian morality, and freedom itself. Believers must no longer stand down and remain silent. Now is the time to boldly stand together as soldiers of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus made it clear that He is sending His followers out as “sheep in the midst of wolves.” How true this is! He did not, however, say we are sent as sheep to the slaughter. We are commanded to suit up in the “whole armor of God” and become “more than conquerors” because “the Lord is our shepherd” and promises to care for us even in the presence of our enemies. We are not to give one inch of our lives or our land to the predatory tactics of the father of all lies and the enemy of truth and life.
13 | Gretchen G.Tiger Fri, Jul 27, 2012 3:46:22pm |
I think the think that bothers me about this is that the statement of the corporate exec is hurting the franchisees who may or may not feel the same way. If they were all corporate stores, that would be one thing. He could direct policy, but it really isn't right to negatively affect independent franchisees who have worked and sunk their own money into their stores.
This Cathy guy was very irresponsible in that. I wonder if any of the franchisees are going to make a class action stink about it if their sales go way down.
QSR (Quick Serve Restaurant) franchisees often are Mom & Pop operations and these people work their asses off for years to try to own a 2 or 3 stores before they are really able to hire a manager and relax a little.

The strongly atavistic religious reactionaries are frightened - and for a reason. Their worldview is collapsing as knowledge continues to be gathered around the world, which contradicts the necessary back-story that supports the prejudices of the likes of the AFA, Barton, et. al.
Not that commercial western media won't use this turmoil to make some dough. For example, this NYT originated article that is being reprinted across the country:
DNA, fossils at odds on human development
The writer, Nicholas Wade, is basing the CONTROVERSY! on a single statement by one paleoanthropologist, Richard Klein, who objects to positing a new species without archeological evidence (bones, tools, etc.)
In reality, there isn't really a controversy over the findings of the paper reported, but rather what it means in the bigger picture of detailing human evolution - Recent Out of Africa, or a Multi-Regional evolution. However, that is not covered in that wire story.
Anyway, the Biblical story has long been shown to be creative fiction, written by a small group of religions leaders in one Semitic group between the early Iron Age and late antiquity, to fill in a back story for a nationalistic movement. That then the current atavists glom onto these stories (and glom erroneously, btw) is not surprising given their own lusts for power.

Off topic, maybe, but further evidence of the deconstruction of civilization we're undergoing:
LSU announces cuts to hospital system; Lake Charles and Independence centers hit hardest
The Louisiana public hospital system will plug a $329 million shortfall through a combination of cuts to services for thousands of patients at some medical centers and a series of financial maneuvers aimed at funneling money into the system as a stop-gap.
While most of the proposal relies on shifting money that was being used for other purposes, such as physician recruitment, into funding direct medical care, none of the 10 hospitals in the Louisiana State University system will be spared from cuts. Those reductions amount to about $50 million and fall heaviest on the Lallie Kemp Regional Medical Center in Independence and the Walter O. Moss Regional Medical Center in Lake Charles.
Overall, LSU hospitals expect a reduction of about 79,000 outpatient visits and provide about 12,400 fewer days of in-hospital care. Many of those patients, particularly those who use the public hospitals for outpatient treatment, will be left without health care services, said Dr. Fred Cerise, the head of the hospital system.
[...]
Lalliie Kemp will see cuts of about $14 million, including reductions in cancer services, the loss of two physician positions, reductions to women's health services and staff reductions. William O. Moss will be cut by about $10.5 million, including reductions in clinical operations, the elimination of all but ten inpatient beds and reductions in staff.

From Mother Jones, no less, by Adam Serwer:
..."We think there's a constitutional problem with discriminating against someone based on the content of their speech," says John Knight, director of the LGBT rights project at the Illinois branch of the American Civil Liberties Union. And Illinois law does not demand that restaurants have anti-discrimination policies in place—"It's a good idea for restaurants to have those policies," Knight says, but the law doesn't require it.
....Chick-fil-A should not be prevented from opening business because of the views of its leaders, or his donations to anti-gay causes. But gays and lesbians in Illinois and Massachusetts have the right to be free from discrimination in employment based on who they are. They also have a right to protest, boycott, and make Chick-fil-A's customers aware that their purchases fund anti-gay activism. If Chick-fil-A discriminates in hiring or refuses to serve customers on the basis of sexual orientation, the local authorities can and should hold him accountable.
Food for thought.

A Working Assault Rifle Made With a 3-D Printer
An amateur gunsmith, operating under the handle of "HaveBlue" (incidentally, "Have Blue" is the codename that was used for the prototype stealth fighter that became the Lockheed F-117), announced recently in online forums that he had successfully printed a serviceable .22 caliber pistol.
Despite predictions of disaster, the pistol worked. It successfully fired 200 rounds in testing.
HaveBlue then decided to push the limits of what was possible and use his printer to make an AR-15 rifle. To do this, he downloaded plans for an AR-15 in the Solidworks file format from a site called CNCGunsmith.com. After some small modifications to the design, he fed about $30 of ABS plastic feedstock into his late-model Stratasys printer. The result was a functional AR-15 rifle. Early testing shows that it works, although it still has some minor feed and extraction problems to be worked out.
...
While there are still some details to sort out, it's pretty clear that making weapons at home using 3-D printers from commonly available materials is going to become much more commonplace in the near future. In fact, as 3-D printing technology matures, materials feedstock improves, and designs for weapons proliferate, we might soon see the day when nearly everyone will be able to print the weapons of their choice in the numbers they desire, all within the privacy of their own homes.
I have little doubt that the printer is capable of making an operational gun. A .22 out of abs plastic I can believe but an ar-15? I think that's pretty doubtful. It does raise some interesting problems for the concept of gun control as printer technology and materials advance.

The Palins are creeping up on the Kardashians in their campaign to become the First Family of reality TV with news Friday that Bristol Palin had been cast in ABC’s fall all-star edition of “Dancing with the Stars.”
“I don’t think it’s our business,” Bristol said of her family, when one TV critic asked about the Palin family reality-TV dynasty.

Bravo! Mother Jones really does surprise me sometimes. I'm being more careful about the news sources I read and skip over a lot of stuff from partisan sources. Mother Jones does have a long history of lefty activist journalism but what I really admire is they do offer some surprises. MSNBC and FOX are completely predictable so there's not much reason to pay attention to what they have to say. YOU EMPLOY RACISTS. If the leading light of conservatism doesn't like this charge, it should not hire racists. It should not publish racists.

Liberals call each other out for racism constantly. That you don't hear the discussion makes me call into question your perception of reality.
More to the point, you hire racists.
"I don’t think liberals appreciate how much conservatives laugh at this stuff."

Pope Benedict XVI Names Viciously Anti-Gay Priest As Archbishop Of San Francisco
In 2008, Cordileone and a select cadre of Catholic leaders decided that their best chance to end marriage equality was to pass an amendment to the state constitution. Cordileone found the first major donor and built a lasting fundraising network for the group. He brought in an organization to lead the petition. He activated a network of California’s Catholic churches, and helped craft the Prop 8 messaging campaign, even using focus groups. The campaign was successful in passing Prop 8, making Cordileone a primary reason Californians are currently denied marriage equality. After the amendment passed, Cordileone bragged to a Catholic radio show that gay Americans never saw him coming, and called gay marriage a Satanic plot by “the Evil One” to annihilate morality.
Cordileone has continued to be one of America’s most prominent anti-gay Catholic officials. In January 2011, Cordileone was named the chairman of the U.S. Bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee for the Defense of Marriage, a group dedicated to using religious influence to deny marriage equality. Cordileone is one of only 18 American bishops who have signed the Manhattan Declaration, a pledge to protect “the sanctity of life, traditional marriage, and religious liberty,” even if doing so means violating the law.

Somewhat oddly, our local NBC affiliate newscaster is talking about the opening ceremonies as though they will occur later and no one knows what they look like. Apparently they lack an internet connection at Channel 11?

I could see a .22. But a .223? Nope. Chamber pressure in the receiver/breech it self would cause the thing to explode.
Lower receiver is the only printed part but that's the key in the USA. You can get every other part over the counter. Most European countries regulate the barrels instead. He's test fired it with a .22 conversion but given how little stress the lower takes in firing, I'd use it with any well made upper.
Be fun to have the appropriate printer to do it. OTOH, if I could afford the printer, I'd be able to afford an AR15 anyway LOL!

I've met Cordileone very briefly, and heard him speak; he visited the school I used to teach at. He's kind of a trip. Let's leave it at that.

The funniest thing Romney does is bash Europe while he is in Europe. It's one thing to and I understand to have policy differences, it's one thing to be rude and the stereotypical ugly American. The two times I've been in Europe, I've always been humbled because I see how old European civilization is compared to ours. I remember this old cemetery in Prague's Jewish quarter that went back to the 13th century.
