New Obama Web Ad: ‘Steadfast’

Facts about Obama’s support for Israel
Politics • Views: 35,505

Of course, it’s a political move for President Obama to release this web ad on the day Mitt Romney visits Israel. But since the right wing is hyping their completely false “Obama hates Israel” meme like angry weasels, this is a welcome answer to these deranged claims — full of facts and details about Obama’s record, and testimonials from Israeli figures.

Obama signs U.S.-Israel security act on eve of Romney trip

…The act Obama signed Friday reaffirms “unwavering commitment to the security of the State of Israel as a Jewish state” and calls for providing Israel with “the military capabilities necessary to deter and defend itself against any threat or possible combination of threats.”

It also pledges a U.S. veto of “any one-sided anti-Israel resolutions at the United Nations Security Council” and outlines U.S. support for an expanded Israeli role in NATO, increased intelligence cooperation and increased training for Israel’s air force.

Current Breitbart headline:

Mayor Giuliani: Obama the least supportive President toward Israel we’ve ever had

Giuliani said Obama is the “least supportive” president toward Israel that the U.S. has ever had, “Republican or Democrat.” And he seized on Obama’s 2009 request that Israel return to 1967 borders to prove his point: “[It] would be ridiculous if they had to go back to those territorial lines. They’d be in…jeopardy with what’s going on in the Middle East right now.”

For some reason they keep leaving out the “mutually agreed” part.

Wingnuts don’t care about fact or details.

There are Higher Truths, you see. Facts are subordinate.

The Higher Truth is that Obama is a Secret Muslim out to subvert everything America stands for, which means that he hates Israel only slightly less than he hates America.

In that light, there is no need for any “facts” concerning his record.

Romney Camp Breaks Precedent, Bars Press From Israel Fundraiser

JERUSALEM — In a precedent-breaking move, the Romney campaign said today it will bar reporters from attending a high-dollar fundraiser in Israel Monday morning.

No reason was given by the campaign for the change in policy for this fundraiser, other than an aide telling reporters that it is “closed press,” but the presumptive Republican presidential nominee is looking to turn the page here in Israel on a foreign trip that has so far been marred by bad press.

Closing this fundraiser will provide one less opportunity for potential missteps.

Last line emphasized by me. Understatement IMO…

Thus this is not an issue of left vs. right that as some might hope to portray it - both sides are bashing Romneybot’s bad blundering boot-failure..

The right is harping on Obama/Israel not so much because there is substance (there isn’t any and they know it) but rather because they believe the Israel issue is culture issue.

A liberal president by their definition, cannot be a supporter of Israel- and they will hammer that home that false message as hard as they can.

In the end they end up with a lot of very sore thumbs.

Obama’s crime in their eyes, is wanting to shakeup the status quo. He went to Egypt, extended his hand to everyone in the region and got rebuffed precisely because he would sell Israel out or buy into the institutionalized and well entrenched hate.

His allegiance is clear- he is after all a moral man.

He may not walk on water in the political sense (I’m being generous here) but his ethic and morality are beyond question. He has proved he will take the heat for doing the right thing, whether it concerns Israel or national security.

The GOP has no clothes when it comes to criticizing Obama on Israel, national security and related matters.

The irony is Obama is the real moral hero here.

My sister’s gone full wingnut;

first she tells me that Romney’s going to save the economy the same way he saved companies while doing turnarounds at Bain. “Oh,” said I, “he’s going to divest underforming units and eliminate R&D? No more Mississippi or Alaska, no DARPA, no CDC. He’s going to pursue short-term surpluses at the expense of long-term security? No more Navy.”

Then she tells me he’s going to balance the budget, without making any changes to Medicare. I point her to his statements that he wants to lower the top marginal tax rate to 28%, eliminate capital gains tax altogether, and he’s signed on to the Ryan budget.

Then I point out that Romney is on record loudly proclaiming his support for positions on women’s reproductive rights and environmental policy that are exactly opposite to her declared positions.

She says never mind that, she’s still going to vote for him because he’s much better for Israel, Obama’s been crap on Israel. I ask “is there anything Israel wanted at the UN that the Obama administration failed to deliver? Were there any trade deals or weapons systems they wanted that they didn’t get? What exactly is the problem?” And she tells me he’s done nothing (nothing I tell you!! Nothing!!) about sanctions or anything else on Iran. That the only moves this country has made to block them was some Treasury Dept thing that Bush started in 2006. I point to the 5+1 negotiations, the UN resolutions he’s gotten Russia and China to sign on for, Stuxnet, surveillance drones, explosions at Iranian nuke plants and assassinations of Iranian scientists… she denies Obama could have anything to do with any of it.

Then she pointed me to a couple of full-metal-wingnut blogs — Israel Matzav and Elder of Ziyon — for more info on why Romney is Better For The Jews.

I despair.

As Romney heads to Israel, new poll shows Jewish Americans favor Obama

On the eve of Mitt Romney’s overseas visit to Israel, a new poll released Friday indicates Jewish Americans favor the president over Mitt Romney by a solid margin.

According to the Gallup survey, 68% of Jewish Americans back President Barack Obama, while 25% support the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

(Results for this Gallup poll are based on telephone interviews conducted July 9-12, 2012, with a random sample of 1,014 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. For results based on the total sample of national adults, one can say with 95% confidence that the maximum margin of sampling error is ±4 percentage points.)

Actually it is ‘registered voters’:

Among Jews, Obama’s current 64% to 29% advantage compares with a 74% to 23% advantage before the election in 2008. Thus, he is running 10 points lower among Jewish registered voters than in 2008, which is five points worse than his decline among all registered voters compared with 2008.

Roger Ebert has a new post up on the Olympic opening ceremony:

…”It was “the most leftie opening ceremony I have ever seen—more than Beijing, the capital of a communist state!” said the Conservative MP Aiden Burley, missing the point. The Beijing ceremony was an expression of pinpoint mass discipline, as countless well-drilled performers hit their cues like so many pixels on a computer screen. The London ceremony was an expression of good-hearted enthusiasm, not always lucid but always cheerful. It would have been unthinkable in Beijing.

[Link: blogs.suntimes.com…]

From the comments:

“It was a lovely, daft expression of all that’s best and oddest about Britain. How can it be ‘globalist forces’ when our current (Right wing, let’s not forget) Government is actively attacking the basis and structure of the NHS? Danny Boyle gave as much time and consideration to the growth of industry and capitalism in the UK as to the joys of children’s literature and technology? The NHS is a peculiarly British institution, cherished by most of us who never have to panic about medical cover being there as we’ve already paid for it, mutter and mumble though we will over waiting times and bossy nurses…

The Conservative MP has gotten a roasting off his own party for his jibes about multi-culturalism (it’s the World Olympics, you’d think he’d figure that there might be more than one culture there!) and London, and the UK generally is the one of the most diverse and vibrant societies on Earth, always has been.
Roger, your review was spot on— it was EXACTLY like the old radio ‘pictures’ come to life. Bonkers. But in a good way.”

Another “leak” from the Obama administration…

Netanyahu, Obama aide discussed possibility of Iran strike, U.S. official says

The U.S. national security adviser has shared with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the United States’ contingency plans for a possible attack on Iran.

According to a senior American official, National Security Advisor Tom Donilon briefed Netanyahu on the plans during Donilon’s visit to Israel two weeks ago. According to the official, who requested anonymity, Netanyahu hosted Donilon at a three-hour dinner. For part of the time, Israel’s national security adviser, Yaakov Amidror, was on hand.

Donilon sought to make clear that the United States is seriously preparing for the possibility that negotiations will reach a dead end and military action will become necessary. He said reports of such preparations were not just a way to assuage Israel’s concerns.

As Romney heads to Israel, new poll shows Jewish Americans favor Obama

Obama got 83% of the Jewish vote in 2008, so if those numbers are real, they do represent a loss. I suspect that actual voting numbers will be substantially higher for Obama however.

This doesn’t necessarily speak poorly of Romney, though, it’s just that Jews vote for Democrats, and so far, the ‘we like Israel so much better’ plot has not worked very well for the GOP.
