WKOW in Wisconsin reports: Shooting Reported at an Oak Creek Temple.

OAK CREEK (WKOW) – Police scanner reports that several people have been shot at a temple in Oak Creek Sunday morning.

Police radio reports that several people have been shot at the Sikh Temple in Oak Creek located on the 7000 block of South Howell Avenue. Oak Creek is a suburb of Milwaukee.

According to Oak Creek Patch, the incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. and initial reports said there were four victims and an active shooter.

Oak Creek Patch reports that recent count of possible victims could be between eight and 20 people.

Authorities report the shooter may have left the area.  A witness told Oak Creek Patch that the shooter was a heavy-build white male with a bald head.  He was wearing a sleeveless T-shirt and last seen with two handguns.

I've seen a ton of semi-conflicting reports, some reporting lots of hostages being held, some saying there are four gunmen, others two, some one.

I hope the cops are able to bring this to a conclusion soon and no more die than already have.

Between the NRA and the "diversity is evil" assholes, what can we expect? They are out of control and innocents are paying the price. WTF? We can't even go a month now without someone acting out in blind, irrational rage at good people who have never done anything to them except exist?

The first police officer to respond was shot, but is expected to survive. That officer shot a suspect, who is visibly down and probably dead on the scene. They don't know if there are other shooters. They are searching the neighborhood and warning people to keep their doors locked.

You would have to come up with some bizarre and unlikely scenario in which a sport required or encouraged the participants to paint themselves all one color during the duration of play.

Again, really improbable.

If there's more than one shooter, it raises this to a whole new level. An individual maniac might do almost anything for almost any reason, 2 or more people together would require some degree of organization, mutually comprehensible motive, and common purpose.

Who are they and what do they think they are doing?

You think that's bad. A couple of years ago, my husband and I were over at a friend's house, a few weeks after their first child was born. I admired the baby, who was introduced to me by the father as 'my Pumpkin', and asked, knowing that they had considered several choices, "so, what did you finally name her?"

He looked panicked, and yelled over to his wife, "Jen, what did we name the baby?"

There's a hell of a lot of neo-nazi & militia types in North-Eastern Wisconsin. Three or four groups big enough to show up on the SPLC's maps & lord knows how many others.

46 PhillyPretzel  Sun, Aug 5, 2012 11:14:27am

The latest from The Wall Street Journal: OAK CREEK, Wis.—A Wisconsin man said he spoke to a priest at a Sikh temple outside Milwaukee and was told four people have been shot and women and children are still hiding in the building.

Authorities say there were called to the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin in the suburb of Oak Creek about 10:30 a.m. Sunday with reports of shots fired. They say they don't have details on how many people were shot or their conditions.

Sukhwindar Nagr, of Racine, said he called his brother-in-law's phone and a priest at the temple answered. Mr. Nagr said the priest told him that his brother-in-law had been shot, along with three priests.

Mr. Nagr says the priest also said women and children were hiding in closets at the temple.

A spokeswoman at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee said doctors there were treating two victims of the shootings on Sunday morning.

Carolyn Bellin, chief public relations officer at the hospital, said the two victims were males. One was in the surgical intensive care unit, and the other was in the operating room, she said. The hospital, which is about 13 miles from Oak Creek, is the Level 1 trauma center in the area and is equipped to treat additional victims, Ms. Bellin said. She said she was unaware whether more victims were en route.

True, but I think the pattern there is brawling and violence between adult faction members. Is there anything even slightly parallel to this?

This could be internal. This could have to do with some guy's wife leaving him. This could have to do with a disgruntled lawyer's client. It could be politically or religiously motivated terrorism from a number of sources.

I don't really care right now. First, we get everyone safe and out of the building, and the shooters under arrest.

I do know last year there was Sikh inter religous fighting in a New York temple with knives and swords over some sort of religous differences so maybe that is what is happening here but CNN is not saying the gunman or men are Sikhs.

Power Struggle Led to Melee at Sikh Center in Queens

By KIRK SEMPLE

Published: April 26, 2011

A bloody melee among worshipers at a Sikh temple in Queens over the weekend was only the most public and violent episode in a roiling power struggle marked by frequent confrontations, death threats and a lawsuit, members of New York’s Sikh community said on Tuesday.

As alarming as the fight was, however, it was not unusual. Armed violence has plagued other temples, known as gurdwaras, around the world in recent years. Suketu Mehta, a journalism professor at New York University and the author of “Maximum City: Bombay Lost and Found,” said violence had “become endemic to many Sikh gurdwaras.”

Aside from the normally offensive racist comments at CNN - which were made by the sorts of trolls one would expect and are as wretched as one would expect, there was this bit of FOX news fuelled nonsense that caught my eye:

Ryan
If there were 1000 mass shootings a day it still would not justify illegally taking guns away from law abiding citizens. I will never give up my guns, they exist to defend myself from left wing terrorists who I will shoot to kill if they are dumb enough to attack me.

I have never seen a more self serving comment.

Go right wing, your guns are more important than thousands of deaths every day!

And of course, there are a lot more rightwing terrorists. Religious extremists are not lefties. Neither are white militia types.

But facts like that are secondary. I am more and more starting to see evidence of that talk I heard from AAAS. This guys' ignorance isn't the issue. Facts would not penetrate him. What matters is that he thinks his guns are more important than thousands of innocents killed each day. It is always about themselves first.

Sikh violence against Sikh is nothing new (Air India Flight 192) but that violence has happened in the past is not much of an indicator for this tragedy given the current atmosphere in the US.

The same relative, speaking to WKOW, says his father is certain there were multiple shooters and they are "of caucasion descent." Wouldn't surprise me. As I noted above, we have lots of those nuts in the woods of Wisconsin. Got a "township" run by a bunch of them that every election sends their homemade ballots to Madison to be ignored by the state.

This will sound weird, but thanks for that info.

I'm working on a story with my vampire couple. They're doing a trip around the U.S. in an RV. Mobile protection from the sun.

They're going to end up in a place like this. Since he's French (from Lorraine actually when it was a separate country) and she's obviously attached to him the militia decide they're going to do a 'Most Dangerous Game' on the 'foreigner' and the 'traitor'.

Cop that engaged shooter was 20-year vet, in surgery right now. Shooter he engaged down & presumed deceased. One of the injured at hospital is the cop.

re: #64 SanFranciscoZionist

As someone pointed out above, there are a fair number of white Sikhs in the U.S., converts and children of converts, but the idea that a group of them are carrying this out together in Western clothes, and were recognized by no one strains realism.

My guess at this point would be outsiders, and with some sort of religious or political ax to grind.

Still no way to really tell.

The Sikh temple violence in New York was between a faction that was allowing conversions into it vs those that wanted to keep it ethnic Indian Sikhs only. Again, I am not saying this is the case in this incident but that could explain the 'non Sikh looking gunmen'. Then again I also remember after 9/11 Sikhs were targeted by idiots who thought they were 'turban headed Muslims'.

Okay, there are some loony American Muslims that you see wearing them sometimes, and there's also a cult where the guys wear turbans and fancy uniforms, but I can't remember what they're called...some strange mixture of Cristian & Judaism, IIRC. There's lots of weird stuff up here.

Just a couple days ago I was listening to an NPR story about Punjabis living in Kerman, CA (near Fresno.) It's an agricultural area with lots of Hispanics, who by and large are getting along fine with their new neighbors. They have started teaching Punjabi as an elective in one of the schools, and had a comment from a Hispanic girl who was taking Punjabi as her foreign language so she could talk to her friends in their native language, and then her parents wouldn't understand what they said. It made me smile-and it's one of the things I love about California. I love seeing the Hispanic workmen at the Italian owned grocery store getting their sushi for lunch. I love having an Afghan restaurant next door to a Chinese place.

The gunmen reportedly took control of two Egyptian armored vehicles using RPG missiles and explosives. One of the vehicles blew up near the Kerem Shalom border crossing, while the other one managed to infiltrate into Israel. The gunmen fired tank shells toward Israeli forces stationed at the border, but IAF aircraft managed to hit the armored vehicle.

The stocking cap with the knot at the top is Sikhs. The only Muslim you're likely to see with a turban is maybe an imam/sheikh (usually from overseas). Even then, it's rare.

Some of the Sephardi rabbis wear a sort of turban-like arrangement.

I think the association of Muslims and turbans in the Western mind is based on pictures of the Ottomans, even though Turks these days don't wear 'em much.

And I just heard the first news commentator say "They aren't even Muslim." As if this would make sense if Sikhs were Muslim.

One of the reasons the fear mongering bothers me so much is because of exactly things like this (if it does turn out to be bigotry)—the haters don't tend to be capable of distinguishing between various ethnicities/religions, so not only does it put Muslims at risk, it also puts Sikhs and even Orthodox Christians at risk.

I'm fairly certain they they could also easily mistake a olive-skinned Mizrahi or Sephardi Jews with a beards & kippahs for Muslims. Not ot mention the fact that increased xenophobia can stir up anti-Semitism as well.

I think you could add that they are somewhat isolated, fearful, and don't feel they get the respect they deserve. That last item might be compounded by the fear that they can't really compete on a level playing field.

cnn struggling to give a description of sikhism, but not really succeeding

from wikipedia:

Sikhism is a panentheistic religion founded during the 15th century in the Punjab region, by Guru Nanak Dev and continued to progress with ten successive Sikh gurus (the last teaching being the holy scripture Gurū Granth Sāhib Ji). It is the fifth-largest organized religion in the world, with over 30 million Sikhs and one of the most steadily growing. This system of religious philosophy and expression has been traditionally known as the Gurmat (literally 'wisdom of the Gurū'). Punjab of India is the only region in the world with a majority Sikh population.

Sikhs are expected to embody the qualities of a "Sant-Sipāhī"—a saint-soldier. One must have control over one's internal vices and be able to be constantly immersed in virtues clarified in the Guru Granth Sahib. A Sikh must also have the courage to defend the rights of all who are wrongfully oppressed or persecuted irrespective of religion, colour, caste or creed.

The principal beliefs of Sikhi are faith in Waheguru—represented by the phrase ik ōaṅkār, meaning one God, along with a praxis in which the Sikh is enjoined to engage in social reform through the pursuit of justice for all human beings. Sikhi advocates the pursuit of salvation in a social context through the congregational practice meditation on the name and message of God

In the days after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, at least four acts of violence against Sikhs occurred in the Milwaukee area, , said Swarnjit S.

"Domestic terrorist type incident"

Meaning that the FBI will handle the investigation. Good.

266 General Nimrod Bodfish  Sun, Aug 5, 2012 2:13:04pm

Sounds like two officers were "engaged" by the suspect; the suspect ambushed one officer and then shot at the other. The wounded officer is in surgery at the moment.

Being treated as a domestic terrorism incident.

Looks like the presser is over. From what I caught, 7 are confirmed killed and 3 injured. So far only 1 suspect has been confirmed but seem to leave open the possibility of other suspects. The known suspect did shoot at two police officers, injuring one that, as of the presser, is undergoing surgery, while the other police officer shot and apparently killed the suspect.

Next official press conference is set at 10AM tomorrow. They won't be officially releasing any other information between now and tomorrow.

I think most likely with the current lack of information on the shooter or motive it is probably the designation that they had to give it to give the FBI jurisdiction. In a town of 30000 or so, they probably just don't have the in house resources to handle something of this scale.

He shot a couple outside, reloaded as he walked inside (most likely those inside weren't aware of what transpired outside yet) emptied his gun then reloaded as he walked outside again where he was confronted and shot at the officers (and maybe a couple of more people)

Exactly.
Here in our (relatively) small town I know of at least two Sihks that are on the police force. What if it's the same in that town, and one of them was attending the service while carrying. Could have minimized the victim count

American Sikhs Run Billion-Dollar Security Firm

Next to the elaborate temple is a cluster of drab modular buildings that constitute the headquarters of Akal Security. The reach of this Sikh-founded and Sikh-managed company is huge.

In most cities across the country, for example, the guards who run the metal detectors at the doors of federal courthouses work for Akal Security.

In just the past three years, Akal and its subsidiary, Coastal International Security, earned more than $1 billion in federal contracts. In addition to screening people at federal courthouses, Akal also guards immigration detention centers, NASA facilities, federal buildings in Washington, D.C., and embassies under construction from Ecuador to Iraq.

Every traditional Sikh man is supposed to carry the dagger, although I think they're rarely sharpened. It's symbolic of the obligation to defend the innocent, IIRC.

There's other stuff, the turban means something, and the steel bangles...women wear those too. And something else.

322 Shiplord Kirel  Sun, Aug 5, 2012 2:46:44pm

Re "domestic terrorism" designation. It's likely they have an ID on ther perp by now and some information on his motives. They would withhold this for the usual reasons: notification of next of kin and to avoid alerting associates who might otherwise try to conceal evidence.

For instance, if you belong to one of the many white supremacist gangs in Wisconsin and you hear that one of your members carried out a mass shooting, the first thing you will do is try to get rid of anything incriminating, possibly including yourself if you have a good place to hide.

For airport travel they use a mock wooden "dagger" as a substitute. It's really just a stick. BTW, like the Mormons, they have special underwear too. It must always remain in contact with their body.

Police procedures for handling these incidents are getting pretty refined through frequent repetition.

327 SanFranciscoZionist  Sun, Aug 5, 2012 2:49:21pm

OK, this is what I recalled:

The Five Ks, or panj kakaar/kakke, are five articles of faith that all baptized Sikhs (also called Khalsa Sikhs) are typically obliged to wear at all times, as commanded by the tenth Sikh Guru, who so ordered on the day of Baisakhi Amrit Sanskar in 1699. The symbols are worn for identification and representation of the ideals of Sikhism, such as honesty, equality, fidelity, militarism, meditating on God, and never bowing to tyranny.[32]

The five symbols are:
Kesh (uncut hair, usually tied and wrapped in the Sikh Turban, Dastar)
Kanga (a wooden comb, usually worn under the Dastar)
Katchera (specially made cotton underwear as a reminder of the commitment to purity)
Kara (an iron bracelet, which is a symbol of eternity)
Kirpan (a curved sword, which comes in different sizes; for example in the UK Sikhs would wear a small sharp dagger, whereas in the Punjab Sikhs would wear the traditional curved sword, from one to three feet in length)

At last! I was able to register here at LGF after many years of reading and wishing to comment!

My English students and friends here in the Czech Republic and a few friends in Istanbul are asking me, "WTF is going on in America?".

The only explanation I can come up with is that from time to time, these sort of incidents crop up in a copycat sequence, owing largely to wall-to-wall media coverage of senseless tragedies such as this. One rather pathetic, alienated nutburger goes on a rampage, and the resulting non-stop news coverage seems to inspire other pathetic, alienated nutburgers to undertake similar endeavors.

My thoughts are with the Sikh community in Oak Creek, and my condolences for the unspeakable tragedy they now they find themselves confronted with.
