Update on Sikh Shootings: Gunman’s Tattoos Point to Domestic Terrorism

Information starting to come out
Crime • Views: 48,637

An unnamed federal official told the Los Angeles Times tonight that the shootings in Wisconsin are being treated as domestic terrorism because of the gunman’s tattoos and biographical details.

Tattoos on the body of the slain Sikh temple gunman and certain biographical details led the FBI to treat the attack at a Milwaukee-area temple as an act of domestic terrorism, officials said Sunday.

UPDATE at 8/5/12 5:50:13 pm

CNN has another detail about the tattoos (h/t: Khorramdin):

The attack occurred about 10:30 a.m. (11:30 a.m. ET), when temple members were reading scriptures and cooking food in preparation for the main Sunday service and community lunch, said Kanwardeep Singh Kaleka, a member of the congregation and the nephew of its president.

Kaleka was not at the temple at the time of the shooting, but helped police interview witnesses in the aftermath. He said members described the attacker as a bald, white man, dressed in a white T-shirt and black pants and with a 9/11 tattoo on one arm — which “implies to me that there’s some level of hate crime there.”

UPDATE at 8/5/12 6:08:29 pm

More information on the shooter’s motivations:

Officials told NBC News the suspect, who served in the U.S. Army, had many tattoos. The suspect had some kind of radical or white supremacist views but,as far as officials said they hadheard, he was not in any kind of radical organization. His previous run-ins with law enforcement involved in traffic offenses, they said.

It's a 9/11 Tattoo.

Kaleka was not at the temple at the time of the shooting, but helped police interview witnesses in the aftermath. He said members described the attacker as a bald, white man, dressed in a white T-shirt and black pants and with a 9/11 tattoo on one arm -- which "implies to me that there's some level of hate crime there."

Sometimes the use of the English language can allow for ambiguities:

Tattoos on the body of the slain Sikh temple gunman and certain biographical details ...

The problem with that phrase is that the first time I read this (and I've not been up on the news all day) is that I thought that the Sikh temple was producing, as in originating, gunmen. Ack.

I wrote on another thread that if this was not inter-Sikh violence it was probably some stupid racist guy targeting Sikhs because they look like Muslims - the turban thing - even though Muslims don't wear turbans as happened after 9-11.

If this turns out to be an "American white guy" racist who attacked the Sikhs thinking they were Muslims - that means the right wing is so stupid they can't even identify what they hate - and that is besides the point - the GOP right wing has to be brought to account for egging on their wingnut armed and dangerous, 2nd amendment solution base.

Also of note: Sending members to serve a hitch in the Army is a tactic sometimes seen with gangs of many races in the US. The idea being to have the military train the men so that they come back far more lethal and can use their skills to teach others and improve the marksman ship of the entire gang that way. The Army actively works to prevent this tactic, but is not always successful.

Note: This is one point that should not be linked to conservatism in any shape or form. Skinhead gangs use this sort of infiltration tactic, but some do Latino and African-American gangs. It's a crime thing, not a racial or political thing.

In the original Olympics the horses in the races were awarded the prize (the owners of the horses), even if the jockey fell off. It did not matter. With that said, I wish horse racing was an olympic event because it was an original greek event more so than the dressage or steeple events.

Except not really at all. The costs of competitive horse ownership massively dwarf all of these, and as a prerequisite demand the ownership of a truck and equestrian trailer. Evidenced by the fact that the Romney's claimed $77K in losses for one year based on fractional ownership of their dressage horse. It's not the kind of thing you get heavily involved in unless you're unbelievably wealthy or well connected. Comparatively golf, tennis, driving and computers require very little in the way of a financial investment.

Yes and no. By the time the French king took down the Templars they had lost what generated them their wealth, which was the loss of the Holy land to Saladin. Their wealth came from pilgrims depositing money with them. No more pilgrims and no more wealth.

The idea being to have the military train the men so that they come back far more lethal and can use their skills to teach others and improve the marksman ship of the entire gang that way.

re: #76 William Barnett-Lewis

I guess I'm just responding to Dark's hypothesis in this case. Seems so unlikely that this guy was in a gang, and not just a fucked up murderous bigot/racist.

Wait, I thought there was some differnt euphmism for white gangs. Supremicist Organizations or Para-Military???, because, well, you know, White people don't join gangs.

/gah

rent-a cops, neighborhood watch wannabes . . .

I think it's fair to say that a supremacist organization tends to envision wide-sweeping sociopolitical goals greater than itself; I tend to think of gangs as being pretty pragmatic us-versus-them live-till-tomorrow. It's not unreasonable to have different terminology for the two.

It has a ball, scores, referees, and rules of play.

It's international (which is more than you can say about American football), and has leagues.

Also, to drag forward an Olympic controversy, why does the Olympics give out one set of medals to Ice Skating? Could you imagine if we gave out one set of medals to gymnastics?

87 funky chicken  Sun, Aug 5, 2012 6:42:45pm

re: #46 goddamnedfrank

It's an intrinsically elitist activity, far worse than sailing which is it's closest Olympic competitor for cost of entry. Maybe it didn't used to be, like a century ago, but modern land, feed, transport, training, veterinarian and insurance costs put it way outside the average middle class lifestyle.

My daughter does show jumping, and it is really expensive, but it's also beautiful. It's certainly more appealing than rodeo, and the horses are treated better.

I really doubt the skinhead gangs are organized or disciplined enough to send folks through the military so they can use their talents 10 years down the road. It's much more likely this POS is just a POS who happened to have served in the US Army.

Yes, the horse does get a medal. My brother and I were discussing it the other night and he came up with this:

In Olympic Equestrian competition men and women athletes compete on the same course using the same rules. In Equestrian competitions, not only in the Olympics, rider and horse are considered a team. It will take years of effort and practice for the horse and rider as a team to be able to perform at a high level in the various required routines and tasks they will be asked to perform. When an Olympic medal is won, both the horse and rider are declared Olympic medal winners.”

I take Efexor XR as an antidepressant. Because it's an extended release tablet, it's supposed to last roughly 24 hours. When I take them it lasts about 21-22 hours so the last couple of hours before I take another pill, I'm suffering withdrawal symptoms, which in this case is falling asleep. This is nothing too problematic because I take them first thing in the morning so the last couple of hours before the alarm goes off, I'm sleeping well with some pretty strange and colourful dreams. Calling them weird-ass wouldn't be too far off.

This morning, being a day when there is no alarm meant the weird-ass dreams were a little longer than usual. I dreamt I was back in university taking psych classes which are usually held in smaller classrooms rather than in auditoriums. In this particular class, one of the students was Curious Lurker, which in itself isn't unusual, I frequently have people I know online somewhere in the dream. I probably spend too much time online.

The weird thing about this dream was CL was in what I can only call blue face. Her face was completely painted in a rich blue colour, similar to what you might expect a Pict to wear.

So, CL, do you have any crazy Scots in your heritage, or is my brain just mixing the online world with the painted faces of CFL fans?

Right, but as a person tackles they often lunge shoulder first into their opponent's midsection, exposing their back for a downward shot.

Many of these folks are just plain bonkers. They've been at it ever since 9/11. Roughly speaking the blogs didn't start right away but in any case that means they been engaging in some kind of derangement almost every day for close to 10 years.

Many started under Clinton, some probably go back to the Earl Warren court.

First I've heard of this conspiracy. Get your training from the Army? Really? Gang members think this deeply and want to leave their hoods and current income? Makes no sense, and I don't believe it.

It's not a new idea, bangers of various sorts have been trying it for decades -- recruiters were able to prevent most of them for a long time (that was the original point of examining tattoos and juvie records when people tried to sign up).

But by 3 or 4 years into the Iraq war, recruiting was going so badly they lowered standards and gave out a lot more "morals waivers" than they used to.

[Link: www.armytimes.com...]

Thankfully, the need for such waivers has gone way down. While the end of US military action in Iraq is a large part of that, another big reason is the recession. Reduced prospects for young people have made the military more attractive than it was seen as being in 2006-2007. Recruiters can once again obtain enough premium-quality recruits that they don't need to use "good quality but questionable" people anymore.

Canberra space station to track Mars landing

The Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex (CDSCC) will play a pivotal role in the landing of a rover on Mars today.

NASA's $US2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory, featuring a car-sized rover called Curiosity, is expected to land on Mars about 3:31pm AEST (5:31am GMT).

The mission is a first-of-its-kind attempt to drop a six-wheeled chemistry lab by rocket-powered sky crane on an alien planet.

The Canberra complex is the main tracking station for the landing.

"It will be the station providing prime contact with the Mars Science Laboratory mission as it makes its incredible seven minute entry, descent and landing on the surface of Mars, and all being well, will receive that successful touchdown signal at 3:31pm," said CDSCC spokesman Glen Nagle.

I posted the NPR article about him. Amazing story. He was in a band for years in San Fran. Noticed Orion in different positions going and coming from a gig, was enthralled. Went to college, in charge of this Mars event. Fucking amazing story, I want to marry him now. Please find the article in my previous comments. Makes this whole adventure so much more interesting.

Awesome. Nice.

Gene Kranz

Eugene Francis "Gene" Kranz (born August 17, 1933) is a retired NASA Flight Director and manager. Kranz served as a Flight Director, the successor to NASA founding Flight Director Chris Kraft, during the Gemini and Apollo programs, and is best known for his role in directing the successful Mission Control team efforts to save the crew of Apollo 13, which later became the subject story of a major motion picture of the same name. He is also noted for his trademark close-cut flattop hairstyle, and the wearing of dapper white "mission" vests (waistcoats), of different styles and materials made by his spouse...

Damn Maoists, just because the Birchers obsess about 'em, doesn't mean the few that are left aren't scum. This bunch isn't just Communist, they specifically draw inspiration form the horrifically murderous Mao tse-Tung.

For a good time, try reading the Maoist International Movement's publication "MiM Notes". They do, among other things, movie reviews.

For some reason, there is a very low level of class consciousness in Hollywood's output. The MiMers keep trying.

Dear NYPD,
Taking pics of you is not a crime.
Idiots.

It's not really the NYPD as an agency, its police in general. Cops don't want to be photographed when arresting someone who likely won't be seen as an obvious threat, since such pictures can cause them a great deal of non-official trouble (such as hatemail, hostile phone calls, and harassment when out on patrol). That not an excuse for unlawful actions, but it can serves to explain such actions. (Whether the police subjected this photographer to such actions is uncertain at this time, and as such is not a point addressed in this post).,

ABC News: Officials Believe 'White Supremacist' Behind 'Domestic Terrorism'

Though police have not given any details on the identity or motive of the shooter, or released the identities of the victims, sources have told ABC News the shootings are the work of a "white supremacist" or "skinhead."
This evening, the FBI and a bomb squad arrived at a home in Cudahy, Wis., near Oak Creek, and ABC News Milwaukee affiliate WISN reported the action appeared to be related to the temple shootings earlier in the day.

I was curious what was going on at Geller's place and apparently she was just in Stockholm w/ Spencer, hobnobbing with EDL bigwigs, going out for drinks, proudly posing for photos with them, participating in an anti-Muslim rally with that lot and working together to form some sort of joint, international, uber-bigot brigade. Geller was voted queen:

Stockholm was a wild success, far exceeding expectations on so many levels. After an extraordinary rally at Norra Bantorget in Stockholm, the heads of the leading worldwide counter-jihad organizations held a series of workshops and planning meetings. What has emerged from an intense forty-eight hour strategy session is the first activist leadership team uniting counter-jihadists in Europe, the U.S., and Australia: the President's Council of Stop Islamization of Nations (SION).

The initial members of the President's Council are SIOE's Anders Gravers; Tommy Robinson and Kevin Carroll of the EDL; Debbie Robinson of the Q Society of Australia, Robert Spencer and me. The members of the newly formed council unanimously voted to elect me Council President. I am honored. This is a momentous beginning to what I am confident will become a powerful force for defending freedom worldwide.

There was a story in the local paper that gave some clues about the residence being searched..
Cudahy neighborhood cordoned off

Ted Slater, a neighbor, said the property police were searching was the second floor of a two-story duplex. It's a two-story white duplex with red trim. Slater said police had been searching the other level and that police were seen on the upper-level balcony behind the building.

So I went to Google Maps and drove up and down the street and I think this is the house that best fits the description. No telling if thats the one or not but its cool how you can do that ..

LarryPTL

This is probably how God has protected the rest of the world from Islam, by allowing them to turn on each other to the point where they have all but ignored us. Even today Muslim-on-Muslim violence is at levels that would never be tolerated in the West.

Winston Churchill, in observing the Muslim culture a century ago, noted the utter apathy of their way of life. They do not strive to improve themselves like the western culture, based around Judeo-Christian principals, does. It is so sad to see so much human potential wasted on sating the most base of human emotions in the name of a religion. Especially a religion of war.

Here's a double-rim-shot of "conservative" stupidity:

Global Warming Debunked by Intelligent Design

Global warming has long been used to justify burdensome regulations that increase costs, increases unemployment, increases dependency on government, and reduces our individual freedom.

Now, a recent global warming propaganda "study" says that meteorological and climate events over the last few years are so statistically rare that they must be man-made global warming. Translation: Global warming has been debunked by science.

[...]

So, instead, the “godfather of global warming” has essentially said, “Nope, we can’t figure out the puzzle because it’s too complex. But statistically this is so unusual that it must be man-made global warming.”

Welcome to the world of Intelligent Design, Mr. Hansen.

Intelligent Design is a theory that competes with evolution. It states that many aspects of what we see in the species are too rare to be the result of anything other than a deliberate intelligent design. In other words, it wasn’t random mutations that evolved the species but a guiding hand implementing a purposeful intelligent design. While the theory doesn’t purport to define the “intelligence” that guided the changes to the species (could be God, could be aliens, as far as the theory is concerned), the implications are obvious.

Missed this yesterday... File under What Bigotry in America?

Murfreesboro in perfect storm of debate over Islam

[...]

Fueled by fears that Muslims are gaining influence while Christians are losing clout, activists have battled to block construction of the Murfreesboro mosque. They’ve argued over the minutia of county zoning laws and whether Islam is a religion.

Mosque opponents say they are fighting for the soul of America. With the mosque set to open this month, some residents have raised new concerns by protesting requests for accommodations for Muslim students to pray in local schools. Dozens of critics of Islam showed up at a recent Rutherford County school board meeting to voice their disapproval.

And they plan to oppose any attempts by local Muslims to influence life in Rutherford County.

“We are going to closely scrutinize everything they do,” said the Rev. Darrel Whaley, mosque opponent and pastor of Kingdom Ministries Worship Center in Mufreesboro.

[...]

Until the new Islamic Center was approved in 2010, “I didn’t know that there were any Muslims in this community,” said Pete Doughtie, owner of the Rutherford Reader, a local free newspaper.

His thoughts on Muslims are summed up in the headline of a recent column: “They have nothing positive to add to America.”

[...]

Doughtie also worries about a so-called “stealth jihad.”

He learned that term from a book by the same name by author Robert Spencer, who runs a blog called JihadWatch. The book claims that Muslims want to undermine America from within.

[...]

Amy Binder, an associate professor of sociology at the University of California at San Diego, said mosque critics seem similar to other conservative groups, like supporters of teaching creationism at school.

Interestingly enough, there are is probably a decent amount of heavy metals on Mars, however most of it is likely trapped in the core. Mars would more likely have a water standard than a gold standard. Sorry gold bugs, But to have a working economy you'd need enough people to sustain it.

I wonder what the critical mass would be? after all, what's the point of currency if you have a dozen people on the planet. Maybe the critical mass is an independent population?

Now I'm thinking of how we could partially terraform Mars, focus on the deep trenches, cover them and work on transforming that, toss in some solar mirrors to direct more sunlight and then work on getting enough oxygen cracked from water along with some method of enriching the soil with nutrients to get some crops growing. Hydroponics is cool and all, but come on, we all want forests and trees and crops on Mars. :D

Romneys, caught in housing bust, got tax cut in California

Mitt and Ann Romney were easily able to afford a $12 million La Jolla, Calif., home.

But that didn't insulate them from the winds buffeting the real estate market in the months following their purchase in 2008.

After paying cash for the Mediterranean-style house with 61 feet of beach frontage, they asked San Diego County for dramatic property tax relief.

Romney, the presumptive GOP nominee for president whose wealth is estimated at $250 million, has rejected calls from Democrats and Republicans to release his income tax returns prior to 2010. But San Diego County assessor records shed light on one sliver of the couple's personal taxes during that time: a months-long effort to reduce their annual property tax bill.

Initially, the Romneys asked that their 2009 assessment, $12.24 million, be reduced to $6.8 million, maintaining that their home had lost about 45 percent of its value in the first seven months they owned it.

Thirteen months later, after hiring an attorney to guide them, the Romneys filed an amended appeal, contending the home had suffered a less-dramatic fall of 27.3 percent, to $8.9 million.

They also filed an appeal for the 2010 tax year, claiming the house had dropped further, to $7.5 million, 38.7 percent less than the home's assessed value.

As a result, the Romneys have saved about $109,000 in property taxes over four years.

Egypt hunts Sinai terrorists; 'we'll strike Gaza if needed'

In a report published on Al-Ahram's online edition Monday morning, the security source is quoted as saying that Egyptian army helicopters, accompanied by ground forces, have launched a manhunt for the suspects in the deadly attack on an Egyptian police station in the northern Sinai Peninsula, near the border with Israel.

The forces have surrounded Rafah to prevent the suspects from escaping, the report said.
...
Egyptian analysts who were interviewed overnight demanded that Hamas security forces in Gaza cooperate with Egypt in the effort to apprehend the terrorists. "If we will be forced to strike Gaza, as Israel has, we will do it – if it is proven that those who committed the attack came from Gaza," one of the military analysts said.

He went from 200 followers to more than 8,000 10,000 during and after NASA's livestream of the landing, which was shown live on several cable news networks as well.

Gunman identified

The gunman who opened fire in a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., and killed six people has been identified as Wade Michael Page, an Army veteran who left the service with a less than honorable discharge.
Page, 40, served in the Army from April 1992 through October 1998. He was separated from the Army with a less than honorable discharge and had been demoted from sergeant to specialist during his service.
While in the Army Wade served as a sergeant, and later as a specialist based in Ft. Bliss in Texas and at Ft. Bragg in North Carolina. Wade's job was as a Hawk missile system repairman, and he then became a psychological operations specialist, defense official confirmed to ABC news.
Page was shot and killed in an exchange of gunfire with a police officer who sustained "eight or nine" gunshot wounds, authorities confirmed. Officials are treating it as a case of domestic terrorism.
The ex-soldier is believed to the gunman who opened fire on people at theSikh temple around 10:30 a.m. Sunday morning and killed six people.
Police have not given any details on the motive of the shooter, but Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms Special Agent Thomas Ahern said Page had tattoos that suggested he had ties to white supremacists.

re: #525 NJDhockeyfan

Something is always going on with Israel and the border regions. It's a low intensity conflict most of the time, and it usually involves Hamas or PIJ carrying out mortar or kassam attacks against Sderot or neighboring areas inside Israel. The reprisal raids are typically airstrikes against those launching the attacks, but it's a tit-for-tat.

The Egyptian terror attack was a different sort of raid - it was apparently intended to be part of a larger attack against Israel to kill and/or kidnap Israelis using vehicles and weapons captured. The threat is actually larger against Egypt at the moment than Israel, since Israeli forces are already on high alert against these kinds of attacks. The Egyptians have necessarily been focused on the political situation in Cairo and the security focus hasn't been as important. Until now, that is. Now that the Palestinian terror groups have focused on Egyptian forces, that has pushed the Egyptian government to take action.

Meanwhile, the situation along Israel's other borders has been relatively quiet. The Golan has been quiet, except for Israelis hoping to catch a glimpse of the fighting in the distance (it's 45 miles as the crow flies between the Golan and Damascus).

Second Fire In Five Weeks Burns Missouri Mosque

A second fire in less than five weeks occurred at a mosque in Joplin, Missouri early Monday morning. The cause of the latest inferno is still unknown, but Monday’s flames were much more devastating than those that occurred July 4, in an incident that authorities later determined was an act of arson.

Video shot by local television news station KSNF on Monday captured massive flames engulfing the building.

Firefighters were called to the scene at the Islamic Center of Joplin around 3:30 a.m., according to KSNF.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office told TPM a news conference has been planned for Monday afternoon, and that ATF and the FBI will be involved in the investigation.

“The building was completely destroyed; along with the security cameras,” Jasper County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sharon Rhine said in an email. “We don’t know at this time if it was arson.”

NORFOLK, Va. — Court records show that the mother of Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas filed for bankruptcy earlier this year in Virginia.

The filing was first reported by TMZ, a day after it was revealed that the parents of fellow U.S. Olympian Ryan Lochte were facing foreclosure in Florida.

Documents filed in January in the Eastern District of Virginia show Douglas' mother, Natalie Hawkins, filed for Chapter 13 bankruptcy, which allows people to reorganize their finances and pay down debt over several years.

The good thing is Gabby should be swimming in endorsements soon and her mom wont have to worry about money anymore.

Inside the DHS: Former Top Analyst Says Agency Bowed to Political Pressure

While at DHS, Johnson and his team wrote the April 7, 2009 report, "Right-wing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment." The report, which was intended for law enforcement only, was quickly leaked and caused a firestorm among some on the political right who accused DHS of painting all kinds of conservatives as potential Timothy McVeighs. In fact, it had merely pointed out that some domestic extremists focused on single issues like immigration and abortion and also noted that extremists were interested in recruiting military veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Its analysis of the causes of the surge of right-wing radicalism — the election of the nation's first black president and the economy, among other things — still seems completely accurate and is in line with similar findings by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

But DHS ultimately reacted to criticism from conservative columnists and groups like the American Legion by withdrawing the report. (Ironically, given the criticism of his report, Johnson describes himself as a registered Republican who "personifies conservativism.") In the months following the leak, Johnson says in the interview below, DHS gutted its domestic terrorism analysis unit.

1) Shooter is some white supremacist who was in a neo-nazi band called "End Apathy."
2) According to some 2011 article on The Blaze, The Nazi party supports OWS
3) Hence, it's all Obama's fault.

1. The Nazi Part may have some notions of support in OWS because the problems are caused by Jewish Bankers.

2. Beyond that, the NP has no support for anything else with regards to Obama.

3. The morons at the Blaze seem to forget the President is a black dude, and Nazis don't like black people.

4. Therefore, the morons at the Blaze and typical consumers of their propaganda have roughly equivalent critical thinking capacities as your typical racist scumbag, and usually some equivalent antipathy or hostility to some other group WRT politics or race.

October 24, 2008

Two white supremacists, Daniel Cowart and Paul Schlesselman, are arrested in Tennessee for allegedly plotting to assassinate Barack Obama and murder more than 100 black people. Officials say Schlesselman and Cowart, a probationary member of the racist skinhead group Supreme White Alliance, planned to kill 88 people, then behead another 14. (Both numbers are significant in white supremacist circles. H is the eighth letter of the alphabet, so double 8s stand for HH, or "Heil Hitler." The number 14 represents the "14 Words," a popular racist saying.) The pair are indicted on charges that include threatening a presidential candidate, possessing a sawed-off shotgun, taking firearms across state lines to commit crimes, planning to rob a licensed gun dealer, damaging religious property, and using a firearm during the commission of a crime.

This numeral represents the phrase "14 words," the number of words in an expression that has become the battle cry and rallying slogan for the white supremacist movement: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children." This expression was coined by white supremacist David Lane while in prison serving essentially a life sentence for his role in The Order, a 1980s white supremacist terrorist group that conducted armed robberies, bombings, and assassinations. Lane died in prison in 2007.

Number Symbols

Number symbols are very popular within the hate movement. They are shorthand for ideological concepts that focus on the "salvation" of the white race, Aryan purity, a kinship with Adolf Hitler, and identification with a group such as the Ku Klux Klan. These symbols also offer neo-Nazis, white supremacists and racist skinheads a quick and easy way of identifying with each other. They are often used in the salutations and closings of letters, E-mails, and comments on Internet news groups and chat rooms. They are also found in hate group literature and in hate graffiti.

Iranians 'confess' to nuclear scientist death plot

IRANIAN state television has showed several Iranians alleged to be part of a group of 13 who "confessed" to killing four Iranian nuclear scientists after being trained by Israeli intelligence.

It said the network received orders from "Washington and London."

The television report, available online, showed the suspects speaking of how they purportedly prepared to murder the scientists, and broadcast a re-enactment of assassins on a motorbike fixing a magnetic bomb to a victim's car, while dramatic music played in the background.

It also showed images of a number of prefabricated temporary buildings in an arid area and said the site was an Israeli military camp used for their training.

The 40-minute report, which was broadcast overnight, said the 13 comprised eight men and five women, all of whom were named.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's tour of Malawi had an inauspicious finale on Monday as she and her detail were targeted by a swarm of bees at the airport.

Clinton and her detail were headed to board her plane at Kamuzu International Airport in the capital, Lilongwe, when a swarm of bees descended on the farewell gathering. According to press reports, Malawi and American officials scampered for cover while Clinton ran onto the jet for cover.

“There was a slight panic as the bees winged across the airport. People could be seen running away to keep cover as the Secretary of State swiftly boarded her plane to avoid any stings,” a witness told the Nyasa Times.

Today on the 700 Club, Pat Robertson said that “Satanic” atheists were to blame for the shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin. Robertson claimed that “people who are atheists, they hate God, they hate the expression of God,” and are responsible for the massacre, which was committed by a white supremacist. “They’re angry with the world, angry with themselves, angry with society and they take it out on innocent people who are worshiping God,” Robertson continued. I wonder why he was demoted and given a less than honorable discharge (but he never deployed overseas). It is being treated as a domestic terrorism case.

One of the main questions is why he would target a Sikh temple. Was it because he lumped Sikhs together with Muslims or mistook Sikhs for Muslims (xenophobia/Islamophobia). His white supremacist ties can support either.

Or, he could be the old-fashioned kind of white supremacist who just cares that they're brown and foreign and dressed funny, and doesn't have a particular thing about Muslims. There must be a few of those left.

They seem to be angry about everything including the president.

...Protesters - who included Occupy Oakland activists - said the city was cracking down on vendors and performers who came into the neighborhood during the gallery crawl without permits. Until June, the galleries had closed down a block of 23rd Street, but the approach got too expensive and hectic.

...The vandalism happened a little more than a day after someone damaged two Oakland police cars near City Hall and attempted to break a window at a police station early Thursday.

A group calling itself the East Bay Uncontrollables said it was responsible for the attack and called it a reaction to a federal investigation into anarchist activity.

Lauren Smith, a 30-year-old activist, said the goal of Friday's demonstration was to "create a space where people could have their social gatherings without asking permission from the city and the police department."

She said she was not at the rally but watched it live online. She said she did not agree with vandalizing cars, but that the window-smashing at the campaign office was justified.

"People feel betrayed by Obama. ... I'm surprised it hasn't happened before now," she said. "Oakland is a place where people are really struggling. When the pressure is released just a little bit, you see people go after those things that they see as responsible for the conditions."

Egyptian Air Force deploys fighter jets to the Sinai

Egyptian Air Force deployed fighter jets in the Sinai Peninsula on Monday in the wake of the Kerem Shalom attack, for the first time since the Egypt-Israel peace treaty was signed in 1979, Egyptian news agencies reported.

Two fighter jets, armed with attack missiles, arrived in El Arish early Monday morning to assist in the effort to track down the fugitive terrorists responsible for the killing of 16 Egyptian soldiers on the border with Israel, a high-ranking security official in northern Sinai told the Egyptian news site Al Masrawi. The source added that more military aircraft were on their way.

He also said that within 48 hours, large military reinforcements would arrive in Sinai — a special measure coordinated with Israel in order to help track down the terrorists in Sinai’s rough terrain.

A lot of things come flying across the transom and I never know quite what to believe sometimes... as in this:

Drugs used on pregnant women to prevent lesbian, bisexual and intersex babies

Doctors in the US have been accused of experimenting on unborn female babies by using steroids to prevent ‘behavioural masculinisation’, in an attempt to prevent them being born lesbian or intersex.

As early as five weeks into their pregnancy, pregnant women are given the synthetic steroid dexamethasone, says the report published in the Journal of Bioethical Inquiry.

The Advocate reported that the drug targets ‘sex normalisation’ in the female foetus, to prevent it developing congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), a condition meaning it could be born with more male-typical genitals and brains.

[...]

I think they are referring to this publication:

Prenatal Dexamethasone for Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia
An Ethics Canary in the Modern Medical Mine

Following extensive examination of published and unpublished materials, we provide a history of the use of dexamethasone in pregnant women at risk of carrying a female fetus affected by congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). This intervention has been aimed at preventing development of ambiguous genitalia, the urogenital sinus, tomboyism, and lesbianism. We map out ethical problems in this history, including: misleading promotion to physicians and CAH-affected families; de facto experimentation without the necessary protections of approved research; troubling parallels to the history of prenatal use of diethylstilbestrol (DES); and the use of medicine and public monies to attempt prevention of benign behavioral sex variations. Critical attention is directed at recent investigations by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Office of Human Research Protections (OHRP); we argue that the weak and unsupported conclusions of these investigations indicate major gaps in the systems meant to protect subjects of high-risk medical research.

I'm not about to pay to read the paper... but it might be worth someone out there looking into this.

I still believe in "innocent until proven guilty" even if the guy is dead: just think about Lee Harvey Oswald...

A lot of things come flying across the transom and I never know quite what to believe sometimes... as in this:

Drugs used on pregnant women to prevent lesbian, bisexual and intersex babies

I think they are referring to this publication:

Prenatal Dexamethasone for Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia
An Ethics Canary in the Modern Medical Mine

I'm not about to pay to read the paper... but it might be worth someone out there looking into this.

I need to see a link to the published paper.

neh-ver mind

Because lobbing rockets into schools and residential neighborhoods, or suicide bombers in buses, are such pinpoint strikes against the Israeli military and leadership.

Thing is, Rafah closing absolutely sucks for ordinary people. I've heard people say they like going to Egypt, not even for the things you can get, but just to be able to drive around someplace that's not Gaza.

But Hamas acting as though they're the big champions of the people...

And the Lochte's facing foreclosure, while Romney's tax plan would most likely eliminate mortgage deductions which would be devastating to the middle class.

I see that the idiot-o-sphere (HotAir, FreeRepublic, TheBlaze, etc.) are not able to digest this story. To them, it's clearly the fault of Obama, or Chomsky, or "librul" education, or something like that.

The professional hate industry is something to behold, but then again, it's been around for a very long time.

I just saw the story when I logged into RoadRunner, and the crazy is real, real strong in the comments section. People screaming about deporting anybody from India, and others wildly declaring that "quoting the Southern Poverty Law Center is a HUGE RED FLAG!! THIS STINKS!!"

I needed a shower after just 5 minutes...and that was just a news aggregate site. I can't imagine what the crazy at Red State or Malkin must be like.

re: #628 SanFranciscoZionist

Given the number of Oaklanders you still see on a daily basis wearing Obama t-shirts...

Be careful out there. From East Bay:

FUCK THE PERMITS! KEEP IT IN THE STREETS! Shit went down last night in Oakland :) Report, photos & communique from the action...

Last night, hundreds of Oakland rebels gathered during the monthly first Friday event to take over Telegraph for a rowdy street party with the aim of keeping things uncontrollable, spontaneous, bad for local developers and capitalists, subversive and fun. In recent weeks, the city administration and local business district associations have been preparing plans for cracking down on the growing crowds at the Art Murmur first Friday events which have transformed over the past year from a yuppie gallery walk to an epic street party bringing together diverse crowds from across the city. Their plans for control and containment were smashed to pieces last night.

The street party successfully took over Telegraph and inspired hundreds of others to do the same for over two hours. Case after case of free beer was distributed to the crowd along with spray paint cans which left FTP and anti capitalist slogans across the neighborhood. Music blasted from a sound system as hundreds danced for hours. As night fell, the crowd of over 200 moved towards downtown and ripped down the fence surrounding the empty lot at 19th & Telegraph for a third time since last fall when Occupy first took over the lot before being evicted by OPD. Slightly farther down Telegraph, cheers rang out from the crowd as the large plate glass facade of Obama's Oakland headquarters were smashed to pieces while Obama campaigners ran for cover. The dancing street party continued on and continued to grow in size before dispersing a little while later. There were no arrests and the mood was rebellious and fun the entire time.

Below is the communique handed out during the action:

FUCK THE PERMITS
KEEP IT IN THE STREETS

...We refuse to surrender our space. We want to encourage the organic and rebellious elements of Art Murmur to flourish. We are here to exercise a vision of a liberated city full of free art, free music, free culture, free expression, and free streets.

We are spontaneous, insurgent, uncontrollable.
These are our streets, and we are here to take them.
FTP! FUCK THE PERMITS! FUCK THE POLICE!

A storm is coming...

Another reason I want to see space colonies: No creationists there. The habitats will also be free of Amway dealers, fire-walkers, psychics, and faith healers. How do I know this? These quacks go where the money is. Spaceflight requires a combination of guts and brains that would completely preclude any market for their services.

Fuck yeah to that.

re: #655 NJDhockeyfan

Organizing Oakland uprisings is a rich kid's sport. Like field hockey. Most of them were not permitted to drop out by their fascist parents.

(Whether they actually know how to write, of course, is another matter.)

I'm sure more excuses will be made for OO, but the fact is, attacking an Obama office, is not going to raise their already not-spectacular popularity with the people of the city. Obama is an icon for a lot of folks locally. As I said, it is very common to see Obama t-shirts--new ones, not ones people have been washing and wearing since the election--on everyone from geeky little boys to senior citizens.

I take the 57 bus route to and from work these days, cutting across a pretty big swatch of East and Central Oakland. People talk politics on the bus all the time, local stuff. I listen in. What's happening with the schools. Drug arrests. How the cops are handling things. Violence in the neighborhood. I don't hear Occupy mentioned. On the bus, in blue-collar neighborhoods in Oakland where people talk about their belief that the cops are recycling drugs back onto the street, and discuss meetings to keep local elementary schools open, Occupy doesn't come up.

In my part of the world, I'm simply not seeing much come from these people except self-congratulation and broken glass.
